There are various ways to build connections and find support within one's community. Doctor Laurie Santos introduces Neighbor to Neighbor, a California volunteers network that encourages people to help each other and prepare for emergencies. Meanwhile, Lil Duvall shares his podcast, Conversations with UNK, where he offers life advice and encouragement. In a different context, Alison Motermilk and Robert Lamb from How Stuff Works remind us not to underestimate the brilliance of Stephen Hawking and to appreciate him as a complex and interesting person beyond his theoretical physics work. While Hawking himself wasn't physically present for their interview, they shared some lesser-known facts about him. Overall, these examples show that connecting with others and learning new things can bring hope, growth, and a deeper understanding of the world around us.

    • Stephen Hawking: A Renowned Theoretical PhysicistBorn on Galileo's death day, Hawking researched black holes and a boundless universe, holding prestigious positions, but never received a Nobel Prize or recognition from the Pope

Stephen Hawking was a renowned theoretical physicist, best known for his research on black holes and the concept of a boundless universe. Born on the same day as Galileo's death in 1942, Hawking never received a Nobel Prize despite his fame and numerous awards. He was inducted into the Royal Society at a young age and held the prestigious Lucasian professor of mathematics position at Cambridge University, previously held by Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Babbage. Hawking and Roger Penrose received the Pius XI Gold Medal for science from the Pope. Despite his media fame through TV and film appearances, he never received recognition from the Pope during his lifetime, unlike Galileo. Hawking's work and impact on science continue to be significant, and his legacy continues to inspire generations.

    • Stephen Hawking's Science Adventures for KidsStephen Hawking, a renowned physicist, collaborated with his daughter to create children's books explaining complex cosmological concepts through adventure stories, showcasing his influence on pop culture.

Stephen Hawking was not only a brilliant physicist and a pop culture icon, but also an author who made science accessible to children. His collaboration with his daughter, Lucy Hawking, on the "George's Secret Key to the Universe" series aimed to explain real cosmological concepts in simpler terms through an adventure story. Hawking's appearances on shows like "The Simpsons" and "Futurama" showcased his sense of humor and his influence on popular culture. Despite his scientific achievements, he saw a need for more science education in children's literature and filled that gap with his own works.

    • From Ordinary Student to Renowned Physicist: Steve Hawking's JourneyPassion and determination can lead ordinary students to academic success, even if they don't excel early on. Steve Hawking's love for mathematics and the universe drove him to excel in scholarship exams and major in physics at Oxford.

STEVE HAWKING, despite not being an exceptional student in his early academic years, went on to become a renowned physicist and cosmologist. His love for mathematics and the big questions of the universe led him to major in physics at Oxford. Initially, he was more interested in mathematics than biology due to its precise and exact nature. Hawking's determination to attend the college of his choice drove him to excel in his scholarship exams, despite his initial reluctance to study physics. His story serves as an inspiration that academic success is not solely determined by early achievements, but by passion and determination. Additionally, Hawking's involvement in rowing during his first year at Oxford highlights his versatility and ability to excel in various areas.

    • A life defying expectations despite ALS diagnosisStephen Hawking, diagnosed with ALS at 22, defied expectations and lived an extraordinary life filled with accomplishments, love, and humor.

Stephen Hawking, despite being diagnosed with a degenerative disease like ALS at a young age, lived an extraordinary life filled with accomplishments and love. Before his diagnosis, Hawking was an active rower, but had to give it up due to the intense physical demands. He met his wife Jane at a New Year's party and was diagnosed with ALS at the age of 22, with a bleak prognosis. However, Hawking defied expectations and continued to live and thrive, even as the disease took away his ability to move. He became a renowned physicist, wrote books, and even made appearances on popular TV shows. His sense of humor and sharp wit remained a constant throughout his life. Despite the looming threat of ALS and the possibility of an early death, Hawkins and his wife Jane chose to focus on the present and make the most of their time together.

    • Stephen Hawking's Personal and Professional ComplexitiesStephen Hawking's life was filled with complexities, from his famed theories to his personal relationships and musical tastes.

Stephen Hawking, despite his famed intellect and long-lasting marriage to Jane Wilde, experienced various personal changes including a marriage to his nurse Elaine Mason and a newfound appreciation for Depeche Mode music. Hawking's theory of a Boundless Universe, which he is known for, can be understood through the analogy of a globe in two dimensions, where one can keep running and never leave the same spot, but in a four-dimensional universe, the concept expands to a contained entity with no boundaries. This theory, much like Hawking's personal life, is complex and intriguing, with endless possibilities. Additionally, Hawking's marriage to Jane Wilde, as detailed in her tell-all book "Music to Move the Stars," presented challenges and complexities that are not fully understood from the outside. Hawking's musical taste, which includes classical music like Wagner and contemporary bands like Depeche Mode, highlights his wide-ranging interests and ability to connect with various forms of art. Despite the complexities of his personal and professional life, Hawking's contributions to physics continue to inspire and challenge our understanding of the universe.

    • Hawking's Black Hole Information Paradox and Bet with PreskillHawking proposed a paradox about black holes' information loss, but Preskill disagreed, leading to a bet. Hawking later conceded, acknowledging that information can indeed escape from black holes.

Stephen Hawking, a renowned theoretical physicist, proposed a paradox regarding black holes. He believed that black holes radiate energy but also that information is lost within them. This created a paradox as information, according to quantum mechanics, cannot be lost. US theoretical physicist John Preskill disagreed and made a bet with Hawking that information can indeed escape from black holes. Hawking eventually conceded in 2004, and the bet was settled with an encyclopedia. Hawking also speculated about the existence of extraterrestrial life, suggesting it could be primitive or even non-DNA based, which could potentially bring new diseases to Earth. He also considered the possibility of advanced intelligent life, which might not be friendly and could pose a threat to humanity.

201: Living and Learning Center - Rachelle Vartanian

This week’s episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast features Rachelle Vartanian, founder of the Living and Learning Center – a nonprofit organization that works to enhance the lives of people with disabilities through therapeutic, social, work-based, and community engagement.

Rachelle graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in teaching for the emotionally impaired and right out of college, she worked at a center for adjudicated youth. Rachelle was so passionate about that work, that she ended up working in that field for over 10 years. At the same time, Rachelle went back to school and obtained a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology with a concentration in Personality and Development because she wanted to better understand why so many of her students chose to behave in self-destructive manners. It was during this same time that Rachelle began seeing signs of autism in her youngest son. When he was officially diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, she made the decision to go back to school to get a second Master’s Degree in Autism Spectrum Disorders and she simultaneously began teaching high school special education.

Rachelle had been looking for resources and social skills groups that would benefit her son and through her own experience and seeing the lack of support and resources – she decided to start her own local family group. Every Sunday, Rachelle facilitated a group of like-minded individuals that they called “Weamara” (the initials of the original social skills group members) and that went on for almost two years.

After those two years, Rachelle recognized there was a greater need and she had a vision for what she could do to be the change she wanted to see in the world. Rachelle  took a leap of faith and quit her job after being a special education teacher for 20 years, she sold her family home, drew money from her retirement, and downsized her life – and that’s what started the Living and Learning Center.

The Living and Learning Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, whose mission is to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families. Through therapeutic, social, work-based, and community engagement, the Living and Learning Center seeks to support, enrich, inspire, and embolden their participants and their families so they can achieve their goals and thrive. The Living and Learning Center’s vision is to become the nation’s model in supporting the highest quality of life for people with disabilities and their families.
