    About this Episode

🎙️ Spartan Up Podcast Co-Host Johnny Waite offers a motivational tale of how positive psychology changed his life and a lesson of gratitude in which happiness comes from the simple things.

    🎧 DESCRIPTION

Spartan Race Canadian Operations Manager Johnny Waite recalls the time when his Life shifted. From a cozy and bountiful existence, Johnny’s life took an unexpected turn which led to business failure, divorce and sleeping in the back of a truck.

The Psychology graduate at McMaster University used this opportunity to reflect on the ways he could improve as a better human being. Engaging in new endeavours, Johnny Waite remembers crying while running a marathon. Tears weren’t motivated by sadness, though, but by the overwhelming emotional processing of his recent Life events. Johnny had just discovered the beneficial introspection forced by endurance sports.

In 2011, Johnny Waite tackled the most extreme race on the Planet: the Spartan/Peak Races Death Race. Preparing for the event, he focused on training “uncomfortability”: doing stuff that he hated, performing things that would make him want to quit, experimenting with extreme weather, etc. A few months later, the he was one of the 30 racers – out of 200 participants – who finished the event, despite ravaged shoulders and a broken foot.

Catching the eye of Spartan CEO Joe DeSena, Johnny Waite went from racer to Spartan International Quality Manager and traveled the world for 3 years. Grateful for any opportunity he could get within the organization, he later became a Race Director of Spartan’s races in Canada.

Reflecting on his past, Johnny Waite discovered that he was as happy – if not happier – sleeping in the back of his truck, than living in his former luxurious house. Life coach at Alter Ego Life Adventures, Johnny explains why happiness is a choice. According to him, to focus on what we don’t have keeps us from experiencing bliss: that is why gratitude will change your life.

Johnny states that people often feel in deficit by design. Abiding by our prominent culture of consumerism, we should realize what we do have much more than we actually essentially need. Will minimalism make me happy ? Johnny answers the question by suggesting that anything above being alive puts us in surplus.

💡 3 ways to achieve happiness and success

1️⃣ | Sensei says: Trajectory Over Velocity

Listening to Johnny, I understand that we should take the time to properly identify what we really want in Life, which will become our trajectory. From that point on, it’s hard work and patience. Instead of wanting things to happen immediately (velocity), we should focus on a worthwhile goal, which is the definition of the pursuit of happiness.

    2️⃣ | Sensei says: Gratitude

Following Johnny Waite’s words, I agree that we should appreciate more the true value of what we have. If there’s is something that we do want, we should put our efforts in producing it. Rather than being a consumer of things, we could be a producer and create something that has value for others. That is why gratitude is important and can create happiness in Life.

3️⃣ | Sensei says: It’s Not About You

Learning from Johnny’s wisdom, I found that we ought to step out of our egocentric vision of the World. Consequently, considering our place in relation to others and focusing on who we are as a human being are beneficial to our humility. As Life is ephemeral, it’s ultimately about what we do for the World. Giving to others is key to genuine happiness.

How To Get Into Creative Flow State w/Deftones | Ep. 022

How To Get Into Creative Flow State w/Deftones | Ep. 022

🎸 Chino and Sergio from Deftones give their advice to optimize your flow state activation, get your creative juices going and how to get into creative flow state.

Chino also reveals what happened when his grandma visited him at the recording studio while producing the "White Pony album"...

    🎧 DESCRIPTION

In this creative flow podcast, Chino Moreno (singer) and Sergio Vega (bassist) from Deftones explain how Chi Cheng's situation affected the hard rock band. The hardship of loosing a longtime friend and partner brought the other band members closer together and made them reflect on the value of Life.

Sergio Vega, who replaced Chi Cheng as the band's bassman, reflects on his positive influence and support towards his new band mates in grief. Chino discusses how the dramatic atmosphere surrounding the Deftones pushed the rock music band to rebuild its foundation and creative flow. Moreno tells about the musical inspiration hence generated, as band members lost themselves in their music while living their grief.

Finally, Deftones fans are reminded to support Chi Cheng's surviving family's efforts to raise awareness about wearing your seat belt by donating through https://buckleupforchi.com.

In the interview, Chino Moreno and Sergio Vega expose how the heavy rock band create their best rock songs. From the raw atmosphere of their first rock albums Adrenaline and Around the Fur, to the experimental feel of White Pony, Chino admits keeping himself from becoming creatively bored. Sergio adds that their methodology for writing music relies on simplicity and spontaneity.

In the podcast, Chino Moreno - co-founder of side projects Team Sleep, Crosses, and Palms - and Vega - from former post-hardcore band Quicksand - enumerate the musical influences behind his band's hard rock music. These influences include Sade, HR (Bad Brains), Mike Patton, plus... Michaël Jackson and Boy George (!?), and other bands Deftones played with on tour, like Dillinger Escape Plan.

The frontman of the Sacramento-based heavy rock music band discusses the special vocal FX heard in the Grammy-Award-winning single Elite (White Pony; 2000). The clever process created voices mimicking Transformers characters Megatron, Starscream and Soundwave.

Chino Moreno narrates how his grandmother reacted when she saw him in studio, recording - i.e. screaming - the very energetic chorus of the song.

How To Achieve Your Most Ambitious Goals w/Frankie Edgar | Ep. 021

How To Achieve Your Most Ambitious Goals w/Frankie Edgar | Ep. 021
👊 Inspired by UFC legend Frankie Edgar, learn how to achieve your most ambitious goals and crush your hardest challenges. In this podcast, former UFC Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar also discusses his memorable rivalry vs Gray Maynard.

    🎧 DESCRIPTION

In this podcast, Frankie Edgar, former UFC Lightweight champion, discusses Gray Maynard, his greatest rival in mixed martial arts. Recalling their rematch at UFC 125 - Resolution (2011), Edgar talks about surviving the very difficult first round of the MMA fight.

The New Jersey native admits the pause before round two helped him recuperate and adjust his strategy. Frankie "The Answer" Edgar reveals UFC fighters need cornermen to calm them down between rounds and keep their focus on the right objective.

Member of Team Ricardo Almeida, Frankie Edgar concedes he felt frustrated when training for his second rematch against Gray Maynard at UFC 136. Being unable to beat Maynard in two UFC fights (0-1-1), The Answer felts he owed himself, his family, trainers and fans a decisive victory.

Even after his win against B.J. Penn at UFC 112, Frankie Edgar sensed he still had to put Gray Maynard behind him. The former UFC champion confesses his obsession with his rival, while his MMA training became more complex from rematch to rematch.

In this interview, Frankie "The Answer" Edgar explains how he had developed an interest in Political Science prior to his career in MMA fighting. The top UFC featherweight contender imagines what his campaign slogan would be, were he be running for US President.

After graduating from Clarion University in Pennsylvania, Edgar put Politics aside to work with his father as a plumber and focus on becoming a MMA fighter. Frankie Edgar, one of the top MMA fighters in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, exposes - in the podcast - the challenges in learning a new MMA fighting style and philosophy.

A college freestyle wrestling All-American (2004), Edgar divulges how his boxing coach, Mark Henry, helped him get comfortable with stand-up fighting.
