How To Get Into Creative Flow State w/Deftones | Ep. 022

How To Get Into Creative Flow State w/Deftones | Ep. 022

🎸 Chino and Sergio from Deftones give their advice to optimize your flow state activation, get your creative juices going and how to get into creative flow state.

Chino also reveals what happened when his grandma visited him at the recording studio while producing the "White Pony album"...

    🎧 DESCRIPTION

In this creative flow podcast, Chino Moreno (singer) and Sergio Vega (bassist) from Deftones explain how Chi Cheng's situation affected the hard rock band. The hardship of loosing a longtime friend and partner brought the other band members closer together and made them reflect on the value of Life.

Sergio Vega, who replaced Chi Cheng as the band's bassman, reflects on his positive influence and support towards his new band mates in grief. Chino discusses how the dramatic atmosphere surrounding the Deftones pushed the rock music band to rebuild its foundation and creative flow. Moreno tells about the musical inspiration hence generated, as band members lost themselves in their music while living their grief.

Finally, Deftones fans are reminded to support Chi Cheng's surviving family's efforts to raise awareness about wearing your seat belt by donating through https://buckleupforchi.com.

In the interview, Chino Moreno and Sergio Vega expose how the heavy rock band create their best rock songs. From the raw atmosphere of their first rock albums Adrenaline and Around the Fur, to the experimental feel of White Pony, Chino admits keeping himself from becoming creatively bored. Sergio adds that their methodology for writing music relies on simplicity and spontaneity.

In the podcast, Chino Moreno - co-founder of side projects Team Sleep, Crosses, and Palms - and Vega - from former post-hardcore band Quicksand - enumerate the musical influences behind his band's hard rock music. These influences include Sade, HR (Bad Brains), Mike Patton, plus... Michaël Jackson and Boy George (!?), and other bands Deftones played with on tour, like Dillinger Escape Plan.

The frontman of the Sacramento-based heavy rock music band discusses the special vocal FX heard in the Grammy-Award-winning single Elite (White Pony; 2000). The clever process created voices mimicking Transformers characters Megatron, Starscream and Soundwave.

Chino Moreno narrates how his grandmother reacted when she saw him in studio, recording - i.e. screaming - the very energetic chorus of the song.

How To Achieve Your Most Ambitious Goals w/Frankie Edgar | Ep. 021

How To Achieve Your Most Ambitious Goals w/Frankie Edgar | Ep. 021
👊 Inspired by UFC legend Frankie Edgar, learn how to achieve your most ambitious goals and crush your hardest challenges. In this podcast, former UFC Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar also discusses his memorable rivalry vs Gray Maynard.

    🎧 DESCRIPTION

In this podcast, Frankie Edgar, former UFC Lightweight champion, discusses Gray Maynard, his greatest rival in mixed martial arts. Recalling their rematch at UFC 125 - Resolution (2011), Edgar talks about surviving the very difficult first round of the MMA fight.

The New Jersey native admits the pause before round two helped him recuperate and adjust his strategy. Frankie "The Answer" Edgar reveals UFC fighters need cornermen to calm them down between rounds and keep their focus on the right objective.

Member of Team Ricardo Almeida, Frankie Edgar concedes he felt frustrated when training for his second rematch against Gray Maynard at UFC 136. Being unable to beat Maynard in two UFC fights (0-1-1), The Answer felts he owed himself, his family, trainers and fans a decisive victory.

Even after his win against B.J. Penn at UFC 112, Frankie Edgar sensed he still had to put Gray Maynard behind him. The former UFC champion confesses his obsession with his rival, while his MMA training became more complex from rematch to rematch.

In this interview, Frankie "The Answer" Edgar explains how he had developed an interest in Political Science prior to his career in MMA fighting. The top UFC featherweight contender imagines what his campaign slogan would be, were he be running for US President.

After graduating from Clarion University in Pennsylvania, Edgar put Politics aside to work with his father as a plumber and focus on becoming a MMA fighter. Frankie Edgar, one of the top MMA fighters in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, exposes - in the podcast - the challenges in learning a new MMA fighting style and philosophy.

A college freestyle wrestling All-American (2004), Edgar divulges how his boxing coach, Mark Henry, helped him get comfortable with stand-up fighting.

The Important Qualities Of A Leader w/John Cena | Ep. 012

The Important Qualities Of A Leader w/John Cena | Ep. 012
👋 Inspired by my John Cena interview, I examine the important qualities of a leader the WWE legend embodies and how they we can inspire us to become better leaders.

Also, the Doctor of Thuganomics freestyle raps and talks about his first WWE main event at Backlash 2003 vs Brock Lesnar.

    🎧  DESCRIPTION

WWE Superstar John Cena remembers his very first Pay-Per-View main event at Blacklash 2003. Emanating from Worcester, Mass, the card featured the Doctor of Thuganomics versus the Beast Incarnate himself, former UFC champion Brock Lesnar. Not bad for John Cena who, 12 months prior, was on the brinks of getting released by the WWE.

Performing in front of a local crowd, the West Newbury, Mass native recalls being very nervous before his match. In fact, the event was the very first PPV his parents attended. Despite the lukewarm reception of some of the matches by the crowd, John Cena still thinks the overall PPV delivered.

John Cena, who appeared on the Barbell Shrugged podcast, is known worldwide for his strong sense of ethics, promoting the values of hustle, loyalty and respect. As the Springfield College graduate proved throughout his illustrious career, hard work is the main key to success.

The Suicide Squad co-star actually started training at age 12, as a response to the bullying he was suffering from at school. Rapidly nourishing a passion for fitness and bodybuilding, John Cena eventually moved to the West Coast where he worked tirelessly at Gold Gym’s. The former 13-time WWE champion is adamant about the daily hustle and dedication needed for anyone to become successful.

As John Cena said during an appearance on the Howard Stern Show, he doesn’t mind “making an a$$” of himself. The SummerSlam 2021 main eventer lead by example many times when he diverged from the superhuman persona pro-wrestlers usually portray to embrace more comedic or entertaining storytelling.

Putting the Doctor of Thuganomics to the test, I challenged John Cena to a humorous quiz that you really gotta hear. First, I gave John a few rhyming non-sensical words to freestyle rap on… and the man totally owned it. I also tested his knowledge of old wrestling tag teams of the 80s, like High Energy and the Midnight Express. Yeah, we went “deep cuts”.

3 Key Attributes Of Authentic Leadership

    #1 | Sensei says: Hustle

If there is one thing that John Cena’s peers agree on, it’s that he is a total workhorse. From granting a record-breaking number of wishes for the Make-A-Wish foundation, to representing WWE all around the world, to starring in Hollywood blockbusters (more recently, The Suicide Squad): John Cena exemplifies what hustling is.

For him, to hustle means giving yourself opportunities to fail, hence multiplying your chances at learning and improving. And that’s what an authentic leader does.

    #2 | Sensei says: Loyalty

To be loyal is a value that was engrained in John Cena at an early age. Unfortunately a fleeting quality nowadays, John represents what devotion to a cause, to an organisation or to people is. Per example, when WWE expanded its developmental territory to Florida, he offered rookies free access to his private Hard Nock’s Gym in Tampa. For him, it was essential that prospective WWE wrestlers discover the benefits of strength and conditioning, for their body is their primary work tool.

    #3 | Sensei says: Respect

For John Cena, respect is a way to stay humble. In fact, he makes it a personal goal to show proper respect to everyone, regardless of their opinions or values. I would add that your dictionary has the the most proper definition of what respect is, i.e. the “feeling of consideration towards someone, which leads to treat them with special consideration; manifestations of these regards”. Word Life.

Cultivate An Entrepreneurial Mindset w/Jesse Bruce | Ep. 011

🏋️‍♂️ One Academy Lead Coach Jesse Bruce reveals how to succeed in Business and in Life and offers his inspirational story of personal growth and entrepreneurial mindset, from addiction to Spartan Race champion.

    📚 RECOMMENDED READINGS

    • "Spartan Fit: Transform Your Mind. Transform Your Body." by Joe DeSena and John Durant : https://amzn.to/3lq1rcq

    🎧  DESCRIPTION

One Academy Lead Coach Jesse Bruce tells his troublesome youth which saw him grow as a negative influence in his Waterloo, Ontario neighbourhood. Through drugs, alcool use and mischief, Jesse was generating pessimism around him.

Ever a positive thinker, the Spartan Race champion considers his bad experiences the powerful driving force behind the strong desire he now has towards building a positive environment for other people to evolve in.

Personally sick of being a “loser” (Jesse’s own words), the now University of Guelph-Humber Kinesiology alumnus decided to attend night classes to finish high school. From having no job and no driver’s license, Jesse hustled and worked his way into college

The relentless efforts of the 35-time OCR gold medallist paid off as he got accepted to the University. Jesse Bruce’s life changed when he joined the varsity cross-country team: that’s when he discovered what belonging to a positive community meant.

Adding Business School to his academic resume, the 2017 Spartan Pro Team Member started his first business, driving a trailer from park to park in Toronto to coach bootcamp workouts. Bringing the experience indoors, Jesse Bruce created the Alpha OCR Training Center. Unfortunately, the first foray into the boutique gym industry failed.

Learning from his mistakes, Jesse surrounded himself with competent friends and partners who could contribute to the success of his new project: the One Academy training center, located in the Leslieville area in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Benefiting from a tight-knitted community who followed him through his projects, Jesse Bruce’s OA members quickly formed a strong Army, supporting each other.

3 Tips On How To Become Successful In Life and in Business

#1 | Sensei says: Feed On The Fear Of Failure

Listening Jesse, I got that the fear of failing at his attempt to get his life back together is actually what gave him the motivation to perform. Considering fear is a strong emotion, when exploited properly, it can become a potent ally and a powerful stimulator. Fear can help us push harder and longer in order to survive. It is also a theme I discussed with the “Fear Guru” Patrick Sweeney: watch or listen to the conversation now.

#2 | Sensei says: Surround Yourself With The Right People

Inspired by Jesse Bruce’s business experiences, I learned that – in order to be really successful – you can’t do everything on your own. Whether it be in Life or in Business, we should build on our passions and surround ourselves with people who complement them and support us. Success truly is a team effort.

#3 | Sensei says: Be Ready To Hustle

Corroborating Jesse’s claim, I strongly agree that being an entrepreneur commands dedication. Whatever project or dream you have, be ready to absolutely commit to it and realize you’re gonna have to make sacrifices. Social life, leisure time are just a few elements that will be heavily impacted if you truly want to be successful in your endeavours. Entrepreneurship is a non-stop lifestyle.

🚴‍♂️ "The Fear Guru" Patrick Sweeney reveals strategies to overcome all types of fear, whether it'd be fear of failure, fear of starting a business, fear of flying or simply being afraid of asking out that person you like.

    📚 RECOMMENDED READINGS

"Fear Is Fuel: The Surprising Power to Help You Find Purpose, Passion, and Performance" by Patrick Sweeney: https://amzn.to/3lFfScH

    🎧  DESCRIPTION

Successful tech entrepreneur Patrick Sweeney remembers his difficult childhood: bullied and abused, Patrick grew a fearful kid. He vividly recalls a plane crash at Logan Airport (Boston, USA) that traumatized him. From that unfortunate moment on, Patrick developed fear of almost everything and tried to bury his shame through performance in sports and business.

Reaching adulthood, as none of these means worked, the motivational speaker nicknamed “The Fear Guru” admits relying heavily on alcool and voluntarily burying himself in overwork to cope with his relentless anxiety.

However, the Wall Street Journal best-selling author's reality changed drastically when he got admitted to the John Hopkins Hospital emergency department, experiencing a strange pain in his left arm. After a series of tests, the University of New Hampshire graduate was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia… and was asked by his doctor if his affairs were in order.

At that moment, Patrick promised himself that – if he were to win his battle with cancer – he’d face all of his fears, at last. And win, he fortunately did.

Honouring his promise, cancer survivor Patrick Sweeney used fear as fuel and devoted himself to fatherhood and living a courageous life. The man who became the first cyclist to bike Mt. Elbrus, the highest mountain in Europe, flipped a switch and pro-actively confronted his greatest fears.

Determined to help others overcoming their fears, Patrick consulted with tens of neuroscientists and CEOs, figuring out what fear really was and how to efficiently cope with it. He later shared his findings in his book “Fear Is Fuel”, so that we may learn what fear can teach us.

More importantly, The Fear Guru’s wish is that we don’t have to go through a near-death experience before changing our lives, optimize our personal growth and develop better mental health awareness.

💡 3 STRATEGIES TO OVERCOME YOUR FEARS

1️⃣ | Sensei says: Scare Yourself

Everyday Listening to the Fear Guru, I agree that we do need more fear in our comfortable lives. Physically, when we get scared, our amygdala (or “lizard brain”) triggers our Fight or Flight survival response. Ensues a cocktail of physical and emotional reactions that might be detrimental to us. Exposing ourselves to fear regularly would allow our system to become accustomed to the responses and normalize how fear affects the brain.

2️⃣ | Sensei says: Detach Yourself

Inspired by cancer survivor Patrick Sweeney’s words, I learned that it is wise to train oneself to emotionally retract from a stressful situation. To carefully observe and analyse grants us a rational perspective from which we can make a proper decision.

3️⃣ | Sensei says: Decide On Opportunity

Listening to fellow Red Sox fan Patrick Sweeney ( Pah ! Pah Paaaaah !), I get that we either make decisions based on fear or opportunity. While fear-based decisions only produce regret, shame and failure, choices triggered by opportunity bring happiness, growth and fulfilment. In other words, to turn fear into fuel.

Overcome Performance Anxiety w/Dominick Cruz | Ep. 009

Overcome Performance Anxiety w/Dominick Cruz | Ep. 009

👊 UFC legend Dominick Cruz reveals how he deals with the pressure and external stressors related to performing in the Octagon.

The former 2-time bantamweight champion tells the story of his MMA debut and reminisces about his fabled rivalry with the California Kid, Urijah Faber.

    🎧 DESCRIPTION

Dominick Cruz discusses his legendary rivalry vs Urijah Faber, circa 2011. Arguably the best MMA fighter in his division at the time, the California Kid rivalled Cruz from the now defunct World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) promotion through the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

The Dominator recalls not dwelling on his defeat in the inaugural fight with Faber at WEC 26 (2007). The San Diego native chose to focus instead on technical improvements that would eventually earn him the victory in their rematch at UFC 132 in 2011. In fact, the Dominick Cruz vs Urijah Faber rematch earned both fighters Fight of the Night bonuses.

Dominick Cruz tells the story of what led him to make his mixed martial arts debut in the Rage in the Cage organization, back in 2005 (RITC 67). The former WEC bantamweight champion reveals that a wrestling student of his got him to try a MMA class. After that day, Cruz never looked back.

Head coach of Team Cruz on The Ultimate Fighter 15, Dominick Cruz is adamant about his constant technical progression. As the future UFC Hall-of-Famer indicates, every one of his fights, regardless of the outcome, is an occasion to analyze himself, learn and improve.

Last competitor to fight 2-division champion and Olympic Gold Medallist Henry Cejudo before his retirement at UFC 249, Dominick Cruz exposes his stress-coping philosophy in regards to MMA fighting. The Dominator reveals he does not consider the frustration ensuing from a loss a source of extra motivation.

The USA Today‘s 2010 Fighter of the Year award recipient confesses he never lets himself feel any added pressure, whether it’d be in regards to defending a title or main eventing a major UFC fight card.

💡 3 WAYS TO AVOID PERFORMANCE ANXIETY

1️⃣ | Sensei says: Focus On The Gain

Listening to UFC legend Dominick Cruz, I got that when approaching a performance, whether it’d be in Sports, Academia or Arts, we should avoid thinking about the risks or what’s to be lost in a negative aftermath. Instead, always focus on the probable positive outcome.

2️⃣ | Sensei says: Stress Is A Choice

Inspired by my exchange with Dominick, I realize that letting external stressors or other types of exterior pressure affect us is ultimately our choice. As corroborated by neuroscientist Dr. Don Vaughn in episode 2 of my podcast, that is the way champions think: making an absolute abstraction of any external factors that could mentally deviate them from an optimal performance.

3️⃣ | Sensei says: Preparation Generates Confidence

Learning from Dominic Cruz’s experience, I second that being on the path towards constant improvement is the only way to achieve peak performance. As a corollary, I would add that to prepare properly and to train relentlessly before performing, no matter the performance’s nature, generates the self-confidence needed to avoid anxiety.

Happiness Is In The Simple Things w/Johnny Waite | Ep. 008

Happiness Is In The Simple Things w/Johnny Waite | Ep. 008

🎙️ Spartan Up Podcast Co-Host Johnny Waite offers a motivational tale of how positive psychology changed his life and a lesson of gratitude in which happiness comes from the simple things.

    🎧 DESCRIPTION

Spartan Race Canadian Operations Manager Johnny Waite recalls the time when his Life shifted. From a cozy and bountiful existence, Johnny’s life took an unexpected turn which led to business failure, divorce and sleeping in the back of a truck.

The Psychology graduate at McMaster University used this opportunity to reflect on the ways he could improve as a better human being. Engaging in new endeavours, Johnny Waite remembers crying while running a marathon. Tears weren’t motivated by sadness, though, but by the overwhelming emotional processing of his recent Life events. Johnny had just discovered the beneficial introspection forced by endurance sports.

In 2011, Johnny Waite tackled the most extreme race on the Planet: the Spartan/Peak Races Death Race. Preparing for the event, he focused on training “uncomfortability”: doing stuff that he hated, performing things that would make him want to quit, experimenting with extreme weather, etc. A few months later, the he was one of the 30 racers – out of 200 participants – who finished the event, despite ravaged shoulders and a broken foot.

Catching the eye of Spartan CEO Joe DeSena, Johnny Waite went from racer to Spartan International Quality Manager and traveled the world for 3 years. Grateful for any opportunity he could get within the organization, he later became a Race Director of Spartan’s races in Canada.

Reflecting on his past, Johnny Waite discovered that he was as happy – if not happier – sleeping in the back of his truck, than living in his former luxurious house. Life coach at Alter Ego Life Adventures, Johnny explains why happiness is a choice. According to him, to focus on what we don’t have keeps us from experiencing bliss: that is why gratitude will change your life.

Johnny states that people often feel in deficit by design. Abiding by our prominent culture of consumerism, we should realize what we do have much more than we actually essentially need. Will minimalism make me happy ? Johnny answers the question by suggesting that anything above being alive puts us in surplus.

💡 3 ways to achieve happiness and success

1️⃣ | Sensei says: Trajectory Over Velocity

Listening to Johnny, I understand that we should take the time to properly identify what we really want in Life, which will become our trajectory. From that point on, it’s hard work and patience. Instead of wanting things to happen immediately (velocity), we should focus on a worthwhile goal, which is the definition of the pursuit of happiness.

    2️⃣ | Sensei says: Gratitude

Following Johnny Waite’s words, I agree that we should appreciate more the true value of what we have. If there’s is something that we do want, we should put our efforts in producing it. Rather than being a consumer of things, we could be a producer and create something that has value for others. That is why gratitude is important and can create happiness in Life.

3️⃣ | Sensei says: It’s Not About You

Learning from Johnny’s wisdom, I found that we ought to step out of our egocentric vision of the World. Consequently, considering our place in relation to others and focusing on who we are as a human being are beneficial to our humility. As Life is ephemeral, it’s ultimately about what we do for the World. Giving to others is key to genuine happiness.

📣 What's YOUR definition of happiness ? How did you - or intend to - find inner peace ? Please, share to other Seïtos ! ⬇️

Getting On The Podium w/Kathy Karpati | Ep. 007

Getting On The Podium w/Kathy Karpati | Ep. 007

🏃‍♀️ OCR elite competitor Kathy Karpati shares her fitness expertise and offers you workout optimization tips to get you on the first step of the podium.

Coach at Cor.Fit in Calgary (Canada), Kathy tells her inspiring story leading to the Spartan Trifecta World Championships in Sparta.

💥 When visiting the Canadian Rockies, train at Cor.Fit: https://corfit.ca/

    🎧 DESCRIPTION

Spartan Race elite Kathy Karpati reminisces about her transition from varsity soccer player to obstacle course racing competitor. While in college, Kathy met her current partner Sean who shared a similar interest in fitness and introduced her to the sport of obstacle course racing (OCR).

Co-owner of the Cor.Fit training center in Calgary, Alberta (Canada), Kathy Karpati recalls her first OCR event. The significant adrenaline rush that initial mud race produced and the stimulating athletic challenge it represented got Kathy instantly hooked to obstacles racing. She immediately sensed that immersing herself in this newly discovered sport would satisfy her need for competition.

Rapidly climbing the rankings in OCR, Kathy Karpati competed in the Spartan Trifecta World Championships in Sparta (2018), which consisted of consecutively running a Spartan Sprint (5-7 kms), a Spartan Super (10-12 kms) and a Spartan Beast (25 kms) in the same weekend. After a 4th place in the Sprint and a 5th spot in the Super, Kathy crushed the last 10 kms of the Beast to earn the second step on the podium in her age group category.

Relentless competitor, Kathy Karpati states that all the sacrifices invested and the preparation races performed prior to her weekend in Sparta were worth the commitment, despite the little sponsorship she got. For a OCR racer vying for the #1 spot, satisfaction of one’s competitive need should be the sole motivation.

X-Warrior Challenge competitor Kathy Karpati advises that knowing when to slow down and rest is key for a competitor, no matter how hard it sometimes might be. For example, she recalls participating in a 200-km charity bike ride the weekend before competing in an important Spartan Race in West Virginia, which resulted in underperforming. As a full-time fitness coach, Kathy acknowledges the fundamental importance of recovery in a training routine.

💡 3 tips to optimize your workout routine

1️⃣ | Sensei says: Be Adaptable.

Listening to Kathy, I get that we should leave space for spontaneity in our training regime. Keeping our workouts fresh and diversified – with a little touch of randomness – allows our body and mind to become more responsive.

    2️⃣ | Sensei says: Nutrition.

A key element in any active lifestyle is how well you feed your body. As Kathy Karpati says, we should always eat as clean and healthy as possible, but without sacrificing what we love. As she so wisely puts it, there is always room for ice cream (especially chocolate mint).

3️⃣ | Sensei says: Focus On Your Goal

However rough and crooked the path to your goal might become, Cor.Fit coach Kathy Karpati reminds us to never lose sight of our main objective. She also suggests that appointing punctual markers – or sub-objectives – to our trajectory nourishes our motivation towards achievement.

    🎧 DESCRIPTION

Former UFC fighter and book aficionado, Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman reveals that inner doubt has always been the source of motivation behind his many initiatives. Whether through wrestling, MMA or academics, the former UFC fighter and Division 1 wrestler constantly sought after opportunities that could produce a better version of himself.

Host of the The Spaniard Show podcast, Brenneman confesses having an inner dialogue influencing him to constantly compete against himself. As an active MMA fighter, he was motivated by the world-class competitors he practiced with daily. Now retired from cage fighting, The Spaniard thought about an intuitive way to stay in touch with the inspirational elite. As a result, he started reading books written by world-class authors from a variety of fields.

Author of Driven, autobiography telling his transition from teaching to MMA, Charlie Brenneman recalls developing a passion for reading at a very young age. In fact, the Pros vs Joes reality series champion (season 1) remembers being the target of bullying in school. He reveals getting picked on just for being dedicated to his academic and athletic performances.

Proudly, the former AMA Fight Club athlete now devotes himself to empower people and help them pursue their goals despite adversity. Veteran mixed martial artist, The Spaniard states that any endeavour should be undertaken with perfectionism in mind. Just like a good martial artist vying for daily improvement, one should tackle any entreprise with the intention to practice, learn and grow.

Consequently, Brenneman states that the progress made through one’s initiatives correlates with the improvement of one’s resilience. Inspired by the Progress Principle in the book The Happiness Hypothesis (Jonathan Haidt), Charlie Brenneman proposes that being happy is to appreciate the process in any undertaking. In fact, he indicates that the pursuit of a goal is a prime source of personal happiness.

💡 3 key benefits of lifelong learning

    1️⃣ | Sensei says: Perspective.

Listening to Charlie, I understand that reading books from successful personalities in a particular field of interest, improves my perspective on said subject. Additionally, the knowledge stemming from reading can be applied to the resolution of personal situations, as well.

    2️⃣ | Sensei says: Empathy.

Motivated by The Spaniard’s inspirational discourse, I recognize that seeking erudition from authors of different backgrounds improves one’s empathy. Indeed, the more we know about people, the broader our comprehension of society and the better we become at understanding others.

    3️⃣ | Sensei says: How-To

A wealth of technical knowledge and know-how is found in literature. I agree with Charlie Brenneman that, whatever one’s interest in doing is, relevant readings contribute to one’s success. Consequently, the former UFC fighter wrote a business-oriented book titled Becoming the World’s Toughest Lifelong Learner to help entrepreneurs realize their objectives.

How To Develop Physical Intelligence w/Mike Salemi | Ep. 005

How To Develop Physical Intelligence w/Mike Salemi | Ep. 005

🏋️‍♂️ Kettlebell Master Mike Salemi suggests the best training modalities to optimize your quality of movement, gain physical intelligence and achieve better performance, such as in obstacle course racing (OCR).

Coach Salemi also reveals how the active exploration of movement can stimulate your self-discovery process.

💪 Wanna know more about Mike ? Check out his website: https://www.mikesalemi.io/

    🎧 DESCRIPTION

Performance specialist Mike Salemi discusses how the underlying theme in his personal and professional development became the exploration of movement. Coach Salemi, whose kettlebell workouts have been featured on Muscle & Fitness, states that such exploration allowed a simultaneous discovery of himself.

What motivated the 2017 WAKSC Kettlebell Sport World Champion to practice niched sports – such as gymnastics, powerlifting, kettlebell or olympic weightlifting – was their stimulating communities. It’s the stimulating people in each activity which made these disciplines engaging, personally enhancing and functionally formative.

On the constant lookout for new challenges, Mike Salemi remembers the steep adaptation he had to go through when he progressed from strength-based weightlifting to kettlebells. The latter modality, he found out, required more endurance and mobility.

Kettlebell Master of Sport Mike Salemi is adamant about mastering qualitative movement. For that reason, he enjoys working with technique-savvy athletes such as martial artists, who understand the process and the investment required to master movement. It took, in fact, 8 years for Coach Salemi to obtain his KB Master of Sport rank.

Persevering through setbacks, Mike Salemi – whose expertise was featured on Wellness Force – learned the value of constant skills refinement. He also quickly understood the fondamental importance of technique in physical performance. Coach Salemi’s observations resulted in the creation of his own “Master of the Kettlebell” training program, which focuses on movement mastery.

According to coach Mike Salemi, playfulness is key in a lasting active lifestyle. In fact, qualitative movement allows us to rekindle with the pleasure of active play, the same we experienced in childhood. Consequently, he professes that building a good, technically-sound base is the element from which physical accomplishments arise.

💡 3 best training modalities to achieve (crush) your goals.

1️⃣ | Sensei says: Kettlebell (of course)

Passionately, Mike Salemi suggests that kettlebells form a simplistic, approachable training modality which enables a focus on strength development. The core stabilisation and shoulder work solicited by a good KB workout enhances ballistic movement. Per example, OCR racers use those skills to perform such obstacles as flipping a heavy fire or carrying an Atlas ball in a Spartan Race.

2️⃣ | Sensei says: Bulgarian Bag

Listening to Coach Salemi, I learn that the U-Shaped Bulgarian Bag is an excellent tool to build grip strength. Grip is an essential skill in obstacle sports like OCR (obstacle course racing) and Ninja Warrior types of events. Workouts with the Bulgarian Bag can be surprisingly intense without, without the need to be heavy. The Bag is also optimal for the development of power in all planes of movement.

    3️⃣ | Sensei says: Bands

Rubber bands are the ultimate portable modality according to Mike Salemi. Fanny pack or not (I might insist on the “not”), bands can easily be carried around and are highly versatile. This simple and affordable modality facilitates performing good, creative and satisfying workouts on the go. Bands are also highly relevant in improving joint stability and mobility.

What are your favorite training modalities and why ? Let me know in the comments ! ⬇️

Artistic Integrity And Cultural Loyalty w/Rammstein | Ep. 004

Artistic Integrity And Cultural Loyalty w/Rammstein | Ep. 004

🤘 In this Rammstein interview, bassist Oliver Riedel offers an inspiring message of cultural loyalty and artistic integrity, and tells the origins of the band's authentic stage performances.

👨‍🎤 Wanna know more about Rammstein ? Check out their website: https://www.rammstein.de/en/

    🎧 DESCRIPTION

Right from the group's inception, stage performance and theatrics were important elements of its expression. In fact, their stage act was an essential factor in Rammstein's international success, contributing in crossing over to the American market.

While forging their artistic identity, Rammstein found inspiration listening to bands like Ministry and Laibach. Riedel adds that their German heritage, especially History and political events, influenced the band's agressive style. He also debunks the rumour the band Kiss had any effect on their use of costumes, make-up or special effects on stage. Oliver Riedel would rather cite AC/DC as a meaningful musical influence to him.

Nominated for Best Metal Performance at the Grammy Awards for their songs "Du Hast" (1999) and "Mein Teil" (2006), Rammstein takes great pride in their native tongue. Consequently, Oliver Riedel affirms that the phonetics and guttural aspect of the German language fit perfectly with the band's style of music.

In fact, Rammstein once declared that they found French to be the language most appropriate to express Love, whereas German was the one most aligned with feelings related to Hate. Exposing his artistic perspective on language, Riedel finds that, when expressing oneself musically, one should do so in one's native tongue, as each language possesses its unique musical characteristics.

Controversy is amongst the factors that kept the German "Tanz Metal" (Dance Metal) band away from performing in America for about 10 years. However, bassist Oliver Riedel indicates that much of that pause is explained by overdue time-off needed by the members of Rammstein and the production of the Rosenrot album (2005). Also, considering their European origin, the band's latest touring efforts had been focusing on that particular market. Their 2010 live performance in front of 100,000 fans at the Quebec City Summer Festival (Canada) marked their long-awaited return to the American continent.

💡3 suggestions to optimize your personal (or artistic) expression.

1️⃣ | Sensei says: Dare to be different

Throughout the years, the multi-platinum metal band has proven that staying true to one's artistic style, regardless of criticism or commercial pressure, breeds durable success in the long term. Despite public censorship or national boycotts, Rammstein did not compromise on their content and never stopped challenging social taboos. Those are a few of the reasons why they obtained so much respect from their fanbase.

2️⃣ | Sensei says: Culture inspires.

Winner of a multitude of awards from a diversity of international authorities in the music industry, such as renowned publications Metal Hammer and Kerrang!, Rammstein proves by its authenticity that cultural roots can be powerful sources of inspiration. History, Politics, Geography and Language can be elements bringing a vernacular aspect to one's expression, regardless of the artistic medium.

Listening to Oliver Riedel, I learned that dedicated artists value the communicational efficiency of their art form. As German musicians, Rammstein recognized that using their native tongue would limit the lyrical comprehension of their songs. Therefore, their exploitation of a multiplicity of channels - i.e. staging, costumes, make-up and performance acting - to support their music's meaning optimizes its communicational potential, both on stage and in videos.

3️⃣ | Sensei says: Anger is creation.

Correlating what I've discussed with Rammstein's Ollie, I support the proven principle that all strong emotions are powerful vectors of creation when exploited intuitively. Per example, popular Top 40 music is saturated with content reprising the themes of love and pleasure. Anger, sadness and frustration can also be very potent sources of inspiration and are oftentimes the basis from which stems works of the rock/metal music genre and sub genres.

What did you learn through my convo with Oliver from Rammstein ? Share in the comments !
