Hard Conversations With Kids Around Gender & Planning for Death

    enNovember 25, 2020

    Podcast Summary

    • Talking to Kids About Family Members' Gender TransitionsOpen and honest conversations about family members' gender transitions are crucial for creating a supportive environment. Involve kids in age-appropriate discussions and answer their questions to help them understand and accept the change.

Having open and honest conversations about complex family issues, such as gender transitions, is essential for creating a supportive and understanding environment for all members involved. Erin, from Lansing, Michigan, shared her concerns about talking to her 8-year-old son about her sister's gender transition and moving back home. John, the show host, clarified that a gender transition means someone is moving from one gender identity to another. Erin's sister has been taking hormones and plans to have gender reassignment surgery in the future. Additionally, she has mental health conditions that require help. Erin expressed her feelings of being unsure about how to support her sister while sheltering her son from the situation. John encouraged Erin to reconsider her approach and instead focus on open and honest communication with her son. By involving her son in age-appropriate conversations and answering his questions, Erin can help him understand and accept his aunt's transition. It's important to remember that open and honest communication fosters a more supportive and understanding family environment.

    • Supporting a loved one through a difficult transitionBe present, respect wishes, ensure proper care, and approach with compassion and understanding.

Providing love and support to a family member going through a difficult transition, such as gender identity or mental health issues, is crucial. This can include being present during their arrival home, offering a warm welcome, and creating a safe environment for open communication. It's essential to respect their wishes and acknowledge the challenges they have faced, even if personal beliefs or opinions differ. Additionally, ensuring they receive proper medical care is vital for their wellbeing. Remember, love should be the foundation for family relationships, and drawing firm boundaries should only be considered when safety is at risk. Overall, approaching these situations with compassion, understanding, and acceptance can lead to healing and growth for all involved.

    • Explaining gender transition to young childrenApproach conversations with love, respect, and open communication. Provide clear, honest, and age-appropriate answers. Maintain a consistent and loving household environment.

When dealing with family members undergoing gender transition and explaining it to young children, it's essential to approach the situation with love, respect, and open communication. Children, especially 8-year-olds, may not fully understand the complexities of the situation, but they can sense tension and discomfort. Therefore, maintaining a welcoming and loving environment is crucial. Be prepared for questions and provide clear, honest, and age-appropriate answers. Remember that children don't carry the same emotional baggage as adults and may not fully grasp the historical or political implications. It's also important to respect everyone's feelings and decisions while maintaining a consistent and loving household environment. Ultimately, approach these conversations as opportunities to teach children about love, acceptance, and understanding.

    • People's worth should not be overlookedSupport siblings with grace during gender transitions, recognize deeper emotions towards ex-spouses, and remember relationships are worth the effort.

People are worth it, even in complex and challenging situations. This was emphasized in the discussion about supporting a sibling through a gender transition and dealing with difficult emotions towards an ex-spouse. It's important to remember that people make decisions and live their lives in ways that we may not agree with, but their inherent worth should not be overlooked. In the context of supporting a sibling through a gender transition, it's crucial to approach the situation with grace and understanding, especially when involving young children. In the case of dealing with difficult emotions towards an ex-spouse, it's essential to recognize that the source of those emotions may be deeper than just snide comments and to find ways to protect your emotional well-being while maintaining respect for all parties involved. Ultimately, relationships can be hard and confusing, but they are worth the effort.

    • Dealing with jealousy in a blended familyPractice kindness, refuse to give emotions to others, and focus on the present love for your spouse to manage jealousy in a blended family.

Dealing with jealousy in a blended family can be a challenging experience. When you're in a new marriage where your spouse has a significant past relationship, it's natural to feel jealousy and resentment towards their ex. However, allowing these emotions to take root in your heart can poison your marriage. The key is to practice kindness, refuse to give your emotions to others, and be honest with yourself about the choices you've made. Remember, you chose to marry someone who has a past, and when you encounter their ex, choose to exude positivity and own the high ground. It's important to understand that these feelings will come, but with self-awareness and control, you can manage them and prevent them from negatively impacting your marriage. Ultimately, focusing on the present and the love you have for your spouse is the best way to move forward in a blended family.

    • Navigating complex family relationships during lossGive grace and understanding to all involved, avoid unnecessary strains, and seek help when needed.

Dealing with complex family relationships, especially during times of loss, can be challenging. In Ashley's case, bringing up her husband's ex-wife repeatedly could put unnecessary strain on their marriage. In Kyle's situation, the sudden death of their father and the ensuing estate issues created tension between him and his sisters. Time can heal wounds, but it's essential to give everyone involved grace and understanding. For Ashley, this means avoiding discussions about her husband's ex-wife. For Kyle, it means finding a way to reconcile with his sisters despite the legal complexities and past differences. Both situations highlight the importance of intentionally defaulting to kindness and patience in relationships. Additionally, in Kyle's case, dealing with the death of a parent and the subsequent estate issues at a young age can be overwhelming. It's crucial to seek help and support during these challenging times.

    • Family dynamics during estate handlingGrief affects everyone differently, communication and forgiveness are crucial, and understanding the deceased's reasons for decisions is important.

The passing of a loved one can lead to complex family dynamics, especially when it comes to handling their estate. In this case, the speaker's father made a will just before passing, choosing the youngest son as the executor. The sisters were frustrated with this decision and felt that the father would never have wanted the house sold. The speaker felt obligated to honor his father's wishes, leading to a fractured relationship with his sisters. It's important to remember that grief can affect everyone differently, and communication and forgiveness are crucial during this difficult time. The speaker was encouraged to forgive his sisters for their hurtful words and try to move forward, recognizing that everyone's reaction to the loss was valid. Additionally, it's important to understand that the deceased person likely had reasons for their decisions, even if they may not be clear to us.

    • Healing from the loss of a fatherTaking time for self-reflection, grieving, writing letters, seeking help, reaching out to family, and proper estate planning can aid in healing from the loss of a father and promote personal growth.

Dealing with the loss of a loved one, especially a father, can bring up complex emotions and unresolved issues. These feelings, if not addressed, can hinder personal growth and healing. It's essential to take time for self-reflection and grieving, writing letters to express feelings, and seeking help when needed. Additionally, reaching out to family members and extending an olive branch can help preserve relationships, even if they don't respond positively. Lastly, ensure proper estate planning to avoid complications. The process of healing is not easy, but taking the first step towards facing emotions and connecting with loved ones can lead to growth and closure.

    • Having difficult conversations and tackling important tasksApproach hard conversations with care, plan ahead, understand motives, and create a safe environment for productive dialogue. Don't put off important tasks like making a will, as they can help prevent unnecessary hardships for loved ones.

Having difficult conversations, whether it's about relationships or important life matters like making a will, requires careful planning, understanding of motives, and creating a safe environment. It's important to approach these conversations with the goal of finding common ground and moving forward, rather than causing harm or escalating conflicts. Additionally, taking care of important matters like making a will can help prevent unnecessary hardships for loved ones. Don't put off having hard conversations or important tasks, plan them out, understand your motives, and create a safe space for productive dialogue.

    • The power of unity, safety, and dialogueUnity, safety, and dialogue can heal relationships and bring people closer together. Cherish the relationships that bring you joy and ask for forgiveness to mend broken bonds.

The power of unity, safety, and dialogue can lead to healing and reconciliation. As expressed during a heartfelt call, it's essential to create a safe space for open dialogue and reach out to those we miss, even if it means asking for forgiveness and understanding. Stevie Wonder's iconic song "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" perfectly encapsulates this sentiment. The lyrics, "You are the sunshine of my life / That's why I'll always be around / You're the apple of my eye / Forever, you'll stay in my heart," remind us of the importance of cherishing the relationships that bring us joy and sunshine, no matter how long they've been a part of our lives. By focusing on unity, safety, and dialogue, we can mend broken bonds and find solace in the knowledge that the people we love will always be a source of sunshine and warmth in our hearts.

168 (Part 2) Actionable Steps For Helping Kids Navigate Through Difficult Emotions and Problem Solve

168 (Part 2) Actionable Steps For Helping Kids Navigate Through Difficult Emotions and Problem Solve

We've heard it said that behavior is the visible expression of invisible issues — it's the warning light on the dashboard.

Often, it's the warning light of our child's misbehavior that catches our attention, but what are the invisible issues going on under the surface?

    Usually, it's difficult emotions.

When kids experience something troubling, negative emotions will naturally arise and often they aren't even aware of what's going on inside.  Because kids lack emotional maturity, they tend to misbehave simply because they haven't yet learned how to manage the difficult emotions they're experiencing.

That means your kids and step-kids need your help!

If the kids living in your home tend to emotionally express themselves by getting angry, disrespectful, anxious, acting out, or withdrawing from the family (just to name a few), this episode is for you.

Learning to become 'Emotion Coaching Parents' has been a game changer for us and it's one of the best things we've done to equip our kids for adulthood.  Discover the difference you can make in your kids' lives by following along this week with our 4 part mini-series on raising an emotionally intelligent child.
