How Do I Get My Husband To Grow Up?

    enJanuary 18, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Consequences of enabling behaviorEstablish clear boundaries and expectations, encourage accountability and self-sufficiency in relationships.

Enabling behavior in a relationship can lead to unintended consequences, especially when one partner consistently fails to meet their responsibilities. In the case discussed, a husband's inability to hold down a job and provide for his family left his wife in a difficult position. The situation was further complicated by the husband's inconsistency and constantly changing plans. The speaker suggested that the husband's mother might be a contributing factor, but it was not explicitly stated. The key takeaway is that it's essential to establish clear boundaries and expectations in a relationship and encourage accountability and self-sufficiency. If you find yourself in a similar situation, consider seeking advice from trusted sources or professionals to help navigate the challenges.

    • Encouraging a Lazy Spouse is Not the AnswerFocus on self, define needs and desires, seek support, and take control of happiness and well-being. Enabling is not love, both partners must contribute in a marriage.

Enabling a spouse to live a lazy and unproductive lifestyle is not the solution to marital issues. Nina's husband sits at home during the week doing nothing, and Nina has tried to encourage him to start a hobby, find a job, or become a stay-at-home dad. However, none of these approaches have worked, and Nina feels trapped in a situation where she is shouldering most of the responsibilities. The expert suggests that Nina focus on herself and define what she wants in a partner and a life. She should write down her needs and desires, and consider seeking support from friends or a therapist. Ultimately, Nina cannot change her husband's behavior, but she can take control of her own happiness and well-being. It's essential to recognize that enabling is not the same as love, and a marriage requires both partners to contribute and be active participants.

    • Setting boundaries and prioritizing personal well-beingAsserting needs and values, even if difficult, and effective communication are key to maintaining a healthy relationship. Emotional and psychological commitment is just as important as physical intimacy in preventing infidelity.

Setting clear boundaries and prioritizing personal well-being are crucial in maintaining a healthy relationship. In the discussion, it became clear that the speaker's husband's continued involvement with his mother was detrimental to their marriage. The speaker's attempts to establish boundaries and communicate her needs were met with resistance, leading her to feel disrespected and undervalued. The speaker's experience highlights the importance of asserting one's needs and values, even if it means making difficult decisions. The electronic communication used to convey these messages was also identified as ineffective, emphasizing the importance of face-to-face conversations for addressing serious relationship issues. Ultimately, the speaker's situation underscores the idea that infidelity is not just about physical intimacy with another person, but also about emotional and psychological commitment to the relationship.

    • Focusing on personal needs and boundaries in relationships and homebuyingCommunicate clearly, prioritize self-worth, seek support, focus on controllables, and treat partners with respect in relationships and homebuying

Focusing on personal needs and boundaries is crucial in a marriage, especially when trying to improve a troubled relationship. It's essential to communicate clearly and make decisions based on self-worth. Additionally, seeking support from trusted individuals can help navigate difficult situations. For new homebuyers, focusing on what they can control, such as working with reliable mortgage providers like Churchill Mortgage, can alleviate stress during the home buying process. Lastly, in relationships, treating partners with dignity, respect, and kindness is essential for a healthy connection, especially when it comes to families relying on technology for daily needs.

    • Using Technology to Connect with Loved Ones in Challenging CircumstancesIn situations where nonverbal communication and limited resources make connecting with loved ones difficult, technology can be an essential tool for communication and education.

Technology plays a crucial role in connecting and communicating with loved ones, especially in challenging circumstances. The speaker grew up with a paralyzed sibling who used screens to explore the world, and swore her family would never rely on technology in the same way. However, when she became a mother to a premature daughter with severe autism, nonverbal communication, and other health issues, technology became an essential tool for connecting with her. Despite their desire for a screen-free life, the family is overwhelmed and exhausted trying to disconnect, as their daughter's meltdowns and lack of ability to connect without technology make it challenging to establish routines and boundaries. They live in a rural community with limited resources and rely on technology-based tools for therapy and education. The speaker recognizes the importance of technology in their situation but struggles to find a balance and would appreciate insights on how to limit screen time while still connecting with their daughter. Overall, technology has become an essential means of communication and connection in their family's unique circumstances.

    • Parenting a neurodivergent child: overwhelming challenges and acceptanceAcceptance and adaptation are key to finding peace in parenting a neurodivergent child. Emotional distance and powerlessness are common, but setting boundaries and finding balance with technology can ensure healthy development.

Despite having the means and intelligence to control many aspects of life, facing the uncontrollable realities of raising a child with unique needs can be overwhelming and unmooring. The speakers have tried to push through, but they've come to understand that life's challenges are inevitable and that acceptance and adaptation are key to finding peace. The metaphor of being unable to touch or reach out to help one's child, despite having the answers and resources to help others, highlights the emotional distance and powerlessness that comes with parenting a neurodivergent child. The speakers acknowledge the importance of technology and the role it plays in modern life, but emphasize the need for balance and setting boundaries to ensure healthy development for children. Ultimately, the path to wellness lies in accepting and owning the reality of the situation, rather than continuing to fight against it.

    • Screens as a tool for connectionScreens can foster connection, but it's crucial to balance virtual and in-person interactions to strengthen bonds

Screens can be a tool for connection instead of a barrier, but it's essential to find a balance. Grieving the loss of unplugged experiences is necessary, but focusing on the benefits and finding ways to incorporate technology into meaningful interactions can lead to growth and stronger bonds. Remember, the key is connection, and screens can be an avenue for that, not a replacement for it. Don't shy away from using technology to engage with your loved ones, but also make an effort to unplug and connect in person when possible. Embrace the technological advancements and celebrate the unique opportunities they present for connection.

    • Staying Connected During Challenging TimesDuring challenging times, prioritize family emotional well-being, check in with each other, and offer support to ensure everyone's needs are met. Transitions can be tough, but staying connected helps overcome the struggles.

Parents going through challenging times, such as a spouse's deployment and the loss of a friend or family member, need to prioritize their family's emotional well-being and stay connected. The speaker, who has recently experienced such a situation, emphasizes the importance of checking in with each other and ensuring everyone's needs are met. She also acknowledges the struggles that come with transitions and the impact they can have on a family, especially when a loved one returns from deployment with emotional challenges like PTSD. The speaker's friend offers words of encouragement and validation, reminding her that she and her husband are doing an incredible job and that their experiences are not their fault. Through this conversation, the importance of staying connected and supporting each other during difficult times emerges as a powerful takeaway.

    • Adapting to change and finding stabilityFocus on what we can control, practice bringing stability back daily, communicate needs, embrace change, and approach it with grace and resilience.

During times of chaos and transition, it's essential to understand that stability may not be immediately attainable. Our bodies crave consistency, but we must adapt to new circumstances. Instead of fighting against change and feeling frustrated, we can focus on what we can control and practice bringing stability back into our lives day by day. Communication with our loved ones about our needs and expectations is crucial. By acknowledging and embracing the unpredictability of life, we can learn to love the changes and even find joy in the differences. It's a skill that requires practice, but the rewards are worth it. Remember, change is a part of life, and we can choose to approach it with grace and resilience.

    • Supporting a grieving childBe present and consistent, encourage expression, and create a safe space for a grieving child to process their emotions.

During difficult times, especially when a child is grieving, it's essential to show up and support them. This can be done through various means such as writing letters, having conversations, or engaging in creative activities. It's less about having all the right things to say and more about being present and consistent. Encouraging a child to express their feelings through writing or talking can help them process their emotions and feel less isolated. Additionally, parents or caregivers can write their own letters or share their own emotions with their child to create a sense of connection and understanding. Remember, the goal is to let the child experience their grief and discomfort while providing a safe and supportive environment.

    • Staying focused on individual challengesApproach multiple hardships with courage and patience, seeking support when needed and practicing daily choices for reduced anxiety and stress.

When facing multiple challenges or hardships, it's important to remain intentional and focused on addressing each issue individually, rather than getting overwhelmed by the collective stress. Comparing the difficulties to "small fires" or "big fires," the speaker encourages taking a courageous and patient approach to tackling each problem, and seeking support from friends and loved ones when needed. Additionally, practicing daily choices to reduce anxiety and stress, as outlined in Jon Dalton's book "Building a Nonanxious Life," can help individuals better respond to life's challenges and build a more peaceful, nonanxious life. Remember, "No Scrubs" - don't let life's stressors define you, and don't be afraid to stand up to the challenges and tackle them head-on.

Our second caller’s person left to find herself in London. Fresh off the devastating breakup from someone she dated for a year, and has known since they’ve been children, she’s unsure whether to keep the friendship in the hope of rekindling one day, or cutting off communication. Our final callers have been in a 6 year long-distance situationship and can’t seem to fully commit or break it off. He is currently in a relationship, but they plan to see each other this weekend.
