    • The Rise of Online Gambling in the 1990s and Early 2000sOnline gambling emerged in the mid-1990s, quickly gaining popularity with over 200 casinos and $830 million in revenues. Despite legal disputes, it continued to grow with online sports betting and poker becoming major players.

The advent of online gambling in the mid-1990s, starting with Caribbean islands like Antigua and Barbuda, revolutionized the gambling industry with its ease of accessibility and ubiquity. This new form of gambling quickly gained popularity, with over 200 online casinos emerging by 1997, generating up to $830 million in revenues. However, the United States initially resisted online gambling due to legal issues, leading to a dispute between Antigua and the US at the World Trade Organization. The WTO sided with Antigua, granting them permission to distribute American intellectual property without royalties in retaliation. In the early 2000s, online sports betting and poker gained significant traction, with companies like Betfair, PokerSpot, Party Poker, and PokerStars leading the way. Despite its potential addictiveness and accessibility concerns, online gambling continues to be a major industry today.

    • Online gambling offers convenience and faster gameplay compared to traditional methodsChris Moneymaker's win at the World Series of Poker in 2003 showcases the convenience and faster gameplay of online gambling, allowing players to avoid travel and eliminate chit chat and decision making from others, while offering a wide variety of games like slots, poker, sports betting, and entertainment betting.

Online gambling offers convenience and faster gameplay compared to traditional in-person gambling. This was exemplified by Chris Moneymaker, who won the World Series of Poker in 2003 after qualifying online for just $40. Online gambling allows players to avoid travel and eliminates the need for chit chat and decision making from other players. However, some people prefer the social experience and atmosphere of in-person gambling. Online gambling platforms offer a wide variety of games, including slots, poker, sports betting, and even entertainment betting on events like elections and reality TV shows. Despite the similarities, the instant win or loss nature of online gambling and the ability to play multiple hands at once sets it apart from traditional gambling.

    • Manipulation in Entertainment and Progress in Web DevelopmentWhile some industries like reality TV have had scandals involving manipulation, others like sports and web development have faced their own challenges. Web development has become more accessible and affordable with user-friendly platforms and new features, making it easier than ever to create a website.

While some forms of entertainment like reality TV shows may be rigged, it's important to note that other industries such as sports and web development have had their own scandals and challenges. In the case of reality TV, insiders may be able to manipulate outcomes for profit, but in sports, historical instances of fixing have occurred, albeit less frequently. As for web development, it used to be a complex and technical process, but companies like Squarespace have made it simpler and more accessible with their user-friendly platforms and new features like partnerships with Getty Images, responsive designs, and commerce platforms. With Squarespace, creating a website is now easier than ever, and starting at just $8 a month, it's an affordable solution for individuals and businesses alike.

    • Hidden costs of online gambling for American playersOnline gambling comes with hidden costs like VIG percentages and transaction fees due to regulatory challenges for American players, potentially adding up significantly.

While online casinos may offer the convenience of playing for free and potentially better odds, they come with hidden costs such as VIG percentages and transaction fees. These costs exist due to the regulatory challenges for American players engaging in online gambling, which can lead to steep fees for the players. It's essential to be aware of these costs before getting hooked on the games. During the discussion, the speakers mentioned using Squarespace with the offer code STUFF to get a 10% discount on the first purchase. They also highlighted the difference between playing casino games for free online versus in a real casino, including the possibility of different odds and payouts. However, online casinos may require paying VIG percentages and transaction fees when withdrawing money, which can add up significantly. Historically, American players have faced challenges with online gambling due to regulatory issues, making it difficult for authorities to prosecute. This situation led to the infamous Black Friday incident in 2011, where the top three online poker sites were shut down by the feds. Overall, it's crucial to consider the hidden costs and potential risks before engaging in online gambling.

    • U.S. government's crackdown on online gamblingThe U.S. government's efforts to enforce laws against online gambling led to the shutdown of American companies and a shift towards regulation.

The U.S. government's efforts to enforce laws against online gambling led to the shutdown of American online gambling companies and the move of many to offshore locations. This was due to the passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006, which targeted payment processors, and the subsequent raid on online poker sites on "Black Friday" in 2011. The Obama administration later reversed course and issued a new opinion that online gambling was not illegal if it was allowed by the states, leading to a shift towards regulation rather than prohibition. This history highlights the complex and evolving nature of legal battles surrounding online gambling and the impact of government actions on the industry.

    • Regulation in online gambling: Ensuring legitimate experiencesOnline gambling regulation leads to paid winnings, contrasting unregulated sites' risks. Data safety is crucial, especially for children's social media use, and platforms like Zigazoo prioritize it. Squarespace's Fluid Engine offers website customization for individuals and businesses.

Regulation in online gambling can lead to a more legitimate and manageable experience for users. The discussion highlighted the example of online casinos operating out of countries with heavy regulations, such as Australia and the Netherlands. These sites are required to follow certain guidelines, ensuring that winnings are paid out to users. This contrasts with the potential risks and complications of using unregulated sites. Another takeaway from the conversation was the importance of data safety, particularly in children's social media use. Zigazoo, a social network for kids, was mentioned as an example of a platform prioritizing data safety. It features moderated videos, no comments or messaging, and requires parental consent for joining. Lastly, the mention of Squarespace and its Fluid Engine showcased the ease and flexibility of creating and customizing websites. This can be especially beneficial for individuals and businesses looking to sell merchandise or showcase their content online. Overall, the conversation touched on various aspects of online experiences, emphasizing the importance of regulation, data safety, and creativity.

    • Shifting Legal Landscape for Online Gambling in the USThe US legal landscape for online gambling is complex but trending towards expansion, with investors and financial institutions believing in the industry's growth potential.

While sports betting remains technically illegal at the federal level in the United States, the interpretation of the law has evolved to allow certain forms of gambling, such as daily fantasy sports, in some states. This shift is reflected in the increasing investment in daily fantasy sports platforms like Draft Kings and Fan Duel, which have attracted tens of millions of dollars in venture capital. The trend suggests that there is a strong belief among investors and financial institutions that either federal laws will be changed to allow online gambling or that state regulations will continue to expand, making online gambling a growing industry. However, the legal landscape remains complex and varies widely from state to state, with some allowing online lotteries, horse racing bets, and even online poker, while others do not. Despite this gray area, the momentum seems to be in favor of expanding online gambling opportunities.

    • Online gambling growth not as anticipatedOnline gambling only offers poker, closely monitored, brick-and-mortar casinos diversify to mitigate losses, yet both generate revenue

Online gambling, while still growing, has not reached the financial success that was initially anticipated. Companies like Hilarity in Nevada and New Jersey only offer online poker and are closely monitored by geolocation services to ensure players are within state borders. Brick-and-mortar casino owners, such as Sheldon Adelson and Steve Wynn, are concerned about the potential impact of online gambling on their businesses, but it seems that having a diverse range of attractions can help mitigate any potential losses. Despite this, casinos, both online and offline, continue to generate revenue for their respective industries.

    • Online Gambling: Abstract but Not Risk-FreeWhile online gambling appears less risky due to the intangible nature of money, it can still lead to addiction and potential fraud. Research site reputation and legitimacy before playing.

While online gambling may seem abstract and less risky due to the lack of physical money and chips, it can still present dangers such as addiction and potential cheating by unregulated sites. A study suggested that most online gamblers exhibit moderate behavior, but for those with gambling problems, the ease of access and lack of tangible money could exacerbate their issues. Additionally, the absence of government regulation in some areas leaves consumers vulnerable to fraudulent sites that may manipulate odds or even cheat players outright. It is crucial to exercise caution and research the reputation and legitimacy of any online gambling platform before engaging in any activities.

    • Understanding Online Gambling RisksProceed with caution in online gambling by starting small, testing platforms, and ensuring withdrawals. Be aware of legal issues and age requirements.

Online gambling involves risks, and it's essential to proceed with caution. Start with a small investment, test the platform, and ensure you can withdraw your money. Be aware of legal issues and age requirements. In 2011, the Department of Justice brokered a deal between online gambling outfits, but the legality of online gambling remains a gray area in the United States. Regulating Technologies

    Regulating Technologies
Roger Brownsword argues that the legal community should be concerned to contribute to debates about the implications and regulation of rapidly developing and converging technologies (eg ICTs, biotech / nanotech). Roger Brownsword argues that the emergence of a raft of rapidly developing technologies (ICTs, biotechnologies, nanotechnologies and neurotechnologies), together with the prospect of significant convergence between some or all of these technologies, should be of major concern to the legal community. One set of questions focuses on the regulatory environment in which these technologies first emerge before developing and moving on. What contribution can lawyers make to ensuring that the regulatory environment is fit for purpose? In particular, how well does law perform in controlling for the risks presented by these technologies; and how well does it perform in supporting the research, development, and distribution of these technologies? A second set of questions relates to the use by regulators of various kinds of technological fix, including fixing opportunities presented by developments in these emerging technologies. In addition to checking that technological fixes are legitimate and effective, what should the legal community make of the possibility that technology might displace law as an instrument of social control? In short, lawyers should be concerned to contribute to debates about getting the regulatory environment right for emerging technologies, but they should also be concerned about the implications of technology and design replacing law as a channelling mechanism. This lecture is part of a series organised in collaboration with the Society for Computers and Law (SCL) to provide a platform for leading international scholars to address emerging legal issues concerning the Internet: its use, governance and regulation.
