How To Actually Be Good At Texting (With Anyone)

    en-usFebruary 06, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • The Complexity of Texting RulesBe mindful of tone and intent, communicate effectively and respectfully, and be open-minded and adaptable to improve texting experiences.

Texting has become a complex and confusing form of communication due to the lack of uniform rules. People are constantly creating and following different sets of rules based on various factors such as gender and relationships. However, these rules are not consistent, leading to confusion and miscommunication. Instead of focusing on these rules, it's essential to be mindful of the tone and intent of our messages and to communicate effectively and respectfully with others. Additionally, it's important to remember that everyone has unique communication styles and preferences, so being open-minded and adaptable can help improve our texting experiences. Ultimately, the key to successful texting is clear and considerate communication, regardless of the ever-changing rules and expectations.

    • Pause before responding to upsetting textsConsider the sender's intent before reacting to upsetting texts to prevent misunderstandings and respond thoughtfully.

Effective texting goes beyond just sending messages; it also involves being mindful of how we receive and interpret texts. When we receive a text that upsets us, our initial reaction may be to respond in kind. However, it's crucial to take a moment, reread the text, and consider the possibility that the sender may not have intended to upset us. Texting lacks the nonverbal cues and tone of face-to-face communication, making it easy to misinterpret messages. By taking a step back and critically evaluating the text, we can avoid misunderstandings and respond in a more thoughtful and productive way.

    • Understanding the importance of clear communication and patience in textingEffective texting requires clear communication, patience, and the ability to clarify misunderstandings. Use emojis for quick emotional expression and consider voice messages for longer responses.

Effective texting involves understanding the importance of clear communication and patience. The inventors of texting introduced emojis as a way to convey emotions and meanings quickly, bringing us full circle from hieroglyphics to modern texting. However, misunderstandings can still occur, and it's crucial to pause and think critically before responding. Clarification is key, especially when emotions run high. Additionally, texting is about convenience, and messages can be read and responded to at any time. Voice messages offer an alternative when typing out a text may be too time-consuming. Ultimately, the goal is to engage in meaningful conversations, where both parties understand and respond to each other's messages.

    • Understanding Ghosting in Texting RelationshipsGhosting in texting relationships can be subjective and unintentional. People's lives can be unpredictable, and they may be dealing with personal issues that prevent prompt responses. Practice empathy and understanding when dealing with communication issues.

The expectation of an instant response through texting is not always realistic, and being ghosted can be subjective based on individual expectations. While it's natural to feel upset when someone doesn't respond promptly or at all, it's important to remember that people's lives can be unpredictable, and they may be dealing with personal issues that prevent them from responding. It's crucial to consider the possibility that they may have communicated their absence unintentionally or not at all. The threshold for being ghosted can vary greatly depending on personal expectations, and it's essential to recognize that sometimes, people simply forget to respond or are unable to do so due to unforeseen circumstances. Ultimately, it's essential to practice empathy and understanding when dealing with communication issues in texting relationships.

    • Understanding the limitations of textingFocus on authentic expression and accepting unpredictable outcomes in texting to foster genuine connection

Effective texting involves understanding that we cannot control others' behavior and that our actions should not be solely focused on eliciting a specific response. Miscommunications, such as ghosting, can often be a result of our own interpretations and assumptions. Therefore, it's crucial to read texts carefully and consider possible reasons for lack of response. The rules we create to navigate texting can actually hinder healthy communication, as they may lead to resentment and passive-aggressive behavior when our desired response is not met. Instead, we should focus on expressing ourselves authentically and accepting that not every text exchange will result in the desired outcome. Ultimately, the goal should be to foster genuine connection and communication, rather than manipulating interactions for a particular response.

    • Understanding intentions behind texts is keyFocus on our own behavior, consider intentions, and improve communication skills through empathy and understanding in texting.

Effective communication in texting goes beyond following rules and understanding the other person's behavior is crucial. While it's natural to feel frustrated and resentful when dealing with misunderstandings or different communication styles in texting, it's essential to remember that we cannot control another person's actions. Instead, we should focus on our own behavior and consider the intentions behind our texts. Are we texting to elicit a particular response or because we genuinely enjoy the conversation? It's also important to recognize that nonverbal communication, such as tone and facial expressions, cannot be conveyed through text. Therefore, learning to read a text properly and understanding the context behind the words is more valuable than memorizing rules. By taking a step back and approaching texting with empathy and understanding, we can reduce resentment and improve our overall communication skills.

    • Understanding texting habits and prioritiesBe patient and considerate when texting, focusing on building relationships rather than controlling others' behavior or outcomes.

Texting is a convenient form of communication but it's important to remember that people have different texting habits and priorities. It's essential to be understanding if someone doesn't respond right away or if their response time changes. Being ghosted is a common fear, but it's crucial to consider the other person's perspective and circumstances before jumping to conclusions. Texting should be seen as a means of communication, not a game to be won or a puzzle to be solved. It's not about controlling someone else's behavior or achieving a particular outcome. Instead, focus on accommodating the other person while also representing yourself and what you want. The more we try to control others through texting, the more resentful we become, making it harder to read texts properly. Therefore, learning how to read texts effectively is more important than following texting rules. Ultimately, texting is about building relationships with other human beings, not about conforming to their wishes or trying to manipulate their responses.

#446 Why Better Conversations Will Improve Your Health, Essential Skills To Enhance Your Relationships & Why Men Struggle To Open Up with Nihal Arthanayke

#446 Why Better Conversations Will Improve Your Health, Essential Skills To Enhance Your Relationships & Why Men Struggle To Open Up with Nihal Arthanayke

Today we’re going meta, as they say. Because this is a conversation about…conversation. More than that, it’s a deep and meaningful exchange about why effective, authentic dialogue is so important to humankind – and yet seemingly in decline. And who better to exchange words with on this topic, than my fellow ‘professional conversationalist’, Nihal Arthanayake.

You may know Nihal as an acclaimed broadcaster and TV presenter. He presents a national daytime show on BBC Radio 5 Live, which has over 1.2 million regular listeners, and his unique style recently won him Interviewer of the Year at the BBC Radio and Music Awards. Nihal is a good friend, so I can testify to his ability to ‘give good chat’. But he’s also brilliant at having public conversations that are bold, thoughtful and honest. Guests from the world's biggest stars to leaders of inner-city gangs have lauded his ability to stimulate positive discussions without the need for confrontation.

In his wonderful book, Let’s Talk: How To Have Better Conversations, which has recently been released in paperback, Nihal explains that all the scientific evidence points towards us now sharing fewer conversations than we ever have done before. We may have hundreds of connections on social media, but fewer than ever in our daily lives. So, could learning the art of conversation be an antidote to loneliness?

In our conversation, we discuss the importance of empathy and active listening, with your heart and mind as well as your ears and eyes. Are you listening to understand, says Nihal, or simply to respond? We talk about vulnerability in conversation, why men in particular find that difficult, and why it feels so hard for male friends to exchange words like ‘I miss you’ or even ‘I love you’.

Nihal shares his personal experience and advice, such as how he’s approached conversations with friends who are going through tough times, or why he went to couples’ therapy with his wife on realising their interactions had become more transactional than conversational.

He also explains the evolution and psychology of dialogue, as well as the neuroscience of what’s happening in the brain during meaningful discourse. And he shares some powerful, high-profile case studies who’ve proved that it is possible to find common ground with anyone, even those who are your sworn enemies, by finding your common humanity.

I really think that the skills Nihal is encouraging us all to cultivate are essential if we are to live happy and contented lives, but also essential when it comes to our physical and mental wellbeing. This conversation was relaxed and light hearted but at the same time, powerful and provocative. As Nihal says, great conversation is the glue that binds us all together.
