How voters from different economic sectors see the 2024 election

    en-usApril 23, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • Impact of economy on individuals and businessesRegardless of political affiliations, individuals and businesses face common economic challenges that can significantly impact their lives and communities.

The economy's impact on individuals and businesses transcends political affiliations. I had the privilege of speaking with Bhavesh Patel, a hotel owner, and three other American indicators - a housing attorney, a small business owner, and a food distributor - over the past few years. Their stories revealed the ripple effects of economic changes, from the end of a pandemic moratorium on evictions to supply chain disruptions and food price increases. These conversations didn't focus on politics, but now, during election season, I reconnected with them to discuss their political views. Despite their diverse backgrounds and geographical locations, they all expressed concerns about the economy and its impact on their lives and communities. This highlights the importance of understanding the economic challenges faced by individuals and businesses, regardless of political leanings.

    • Americans' economic perspectives shape 2024 presidential raceEconomic conditions influence voters' decisions and career choices, making economic policies a crucial factor in the 2024 presidential race.

Americans' perspectives on the economy significantly influence their stance on the 2024 presidential race. This was highlighted in a conversation between Ari Shapiro and Brooke Neubauer, where they discussed how economic conditions impact voters. Bhavesh Patel, an example given, had to downsize his hotel business due to market challenges and changing regulations. His sons opted for careers in medicine instead, reflecting the current economic climate's impact on career choices. The economy remains a top voting issue, and candidates' economic policies will play a crucial role in shaping voters' decisions.

    • Concerns about wealth gap and living costs transcend political affiliationsBusiness owners and community leaders, regardless of political beliefs, agree on the need to address insufficient wages and rising living costs

Despite a decrease in unemployment rates, many individuals are still struggling due to insufficient wages and rising living costs. This issue, which was highlighted during the conversation with a business owner and a community leader, transcends political affiliations. The business owner, who identifies as a moderate Republican and has voted for both Trump and Biden, expressed concerns about the wealth gap and regulations. Meanwhile, the community leader, who runs a project providing food for thousands, emphasized the need for higher wages to cover basic living expenses. These conversations underscore the complexities of the current economic landscape and the ongoing challenges faced by individuals and communities.

    • Voters prioritize various factors beyond the economySome voters prioritize values and character, while others focus on economic stability and personal concerns, all shaping their decisions in the upcoming election

This election cycle, voters are considering various factors beyond the economy when making their decisions. For some, like Lisa Neubauer in Illinois, values and character are top priorities. Neubauer, a mother and social worker, expressed her strong opposition to a president who doesn't align with her values of kindness and inspiring change. Meanwhile, Lee Camp in Missouri, a housing attorney, is focused on the resumption of student loan payments and reproductive rights. Camp's personal financial situation and concerns for his family's future have influenced his vote. Lisa Winton in Georgia, on the other hand, identifies as a pocketbook voter, prioritizing economic issues. Overall, voters are weighing a range of concerns, from personal values and economic stability to social services and reproductive rights, when deciding who to support in the upcoming election.

    • Considering Employees, Families, and Vendors in Business DecisionsBusiness owners face financial pressures while also considering the well-being of their employees, families, and vendors. Inflation and political stances impact business decisions.

Owning a business brings additional responsibilities beyond personal financial considerations. The business owner in this discussion, who runs a manufacturing company in Atlanta, highlighted the importance of thinking about the well-being of employees, their families, and vendors. This perspective influences her fiscal policy leanings. The owner had a successful year in 2020, with a 20% increase in revenue, and was considering expanding her business by opening a second factory. However, a significant increase in lease costs due to inflation forced her to reconsider her plans. Politically, she identifies as fiscally conservative and socially liberal, and while she acknowledges the positive impact of certain tax policies, she's concerned about the Republican Party's stance on social issues. She remains undecided about which candidate to support in the upcoming election and is looking for a moderate option.

Biden tries to reassure voters after a shaky debate performance
The day after a debate in which he faltered many times, President Joe Biden hit the campaign trail to try and reassure supporters that he is still up for the job and capable of beating former President Donald Trump in November.

His performance in the CNN debate on Thursday led many Democrats to panic about his chances of winning reelection. Some commentators who have long supported Biden even called for him to step aside.

NPR's Scott Detrow speaks with NPR Senior White House Correspondent Tamara Keith and Congressional Correspondent Deirdre Walsh about what happens next and whether Biden can quell Democrats' fears.

Gun violence is getting worse. Is this the solution?

Gun violence is getting worse. Is this the solution?
The surgeon general's office has declared gun violence a national public health crisis.

It's the first time the body has ever issued a public health advisory about firearms, and for Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, it's a step in reframing the conversation about death by gunfire.

According to the CDC, more than 48,000 Americans were killed by gun violence in 2021, and over half of those deaths were by suicide.

Biden's executive actions on immigration send mixed signals

Biden's executive actions on immigration send mixed signals
In early June, President Joe Biden severely restricted asylum requests from migrants attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border without authorization.

Two weeks later, the President struck a more welcoming tone, saying he'd protect hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens.

Immigration has become a big issue, for both parties. Policy experts say Biden hopes that in a close election year, these executive actions will sway voters to his side.

But will that strategy pay off and how will it affect migrants?

NPR's Adrian Florido speaks with immigration correspondent Jasmine Garsd who is reporting from the San Diego border with Mexico.

The U.S. election results will reverberate around the world

The U.S. election results will reverberate around the world
Polls – and NPR's own reporting – tell a story of many Americans fatigued by the upcoming presidential race. They're not satisfied with the choice between two men who have both already held the office of President.

But American allies and partners are watching the race intently, including South Korea, Japan, Ukraine and Israel. The fates of those countries are closely tied to whether Donald Trump or Joe Biden ends up sitting in the White House next year.

The NPR correspondents who cover those countries, Anthony Kuhn in South Korea, Joanna Kakissis in Ukraine, and Daniel Estrin in Israel, discuss the stakes each of those countries have in the outcome of America's presidential election.

Federal student aid still up in the air for many

Federal student aid still up in the air for many
This year's college application process was supposed to get easier.

That's because last year, the U.S. Department of Education announced changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.

The problems with the FAFSA form began last fall.

And with August and September around the corner, some applicants continue to experience technical issues.

Before this year, students would already know how much aid they're getting. But in 2024, not knowing, which is the case for many, could mean they can't go to college.

And the nominee is...? Who will Trump Pick for V.P.?
We are just weeks away from one of the biggest political events of the election campaign season: the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Former President Donald Trump is, of course, the party's presumptive nominee, but he's yet to announce his running mate.

The list is long, but the candidates all have one thing in common — they're being considered because they could help Trump get elected in November.

NPR's Franco Ordoñez and Jeongyoon Han break down which candidates are rising to the top and why it matters.
