    • 8 functions of webbed feet in different environmentsWebbed feet of animals, like marine iguanas and dogs, serve multiple purposes beyond swimming. They aid in crossing sand for marine iguanas and act as natural snowshoes for dogs in snowy conditions, enhancing their adaptability to various environments

The webbed feet of animals, such as marine iguanas and dogs, may serve more functions than initially perceived. While marine iguanas' webbed feet don't seem to aid in swimming, they might provide subtle benefits in other environments, such as crossing sand. As for dogs, their ability to spread their toes and webbing in snow acts like natural snowshoes, allowing them to cover larger areas and sink less, providing an advantage in cold weather conditions. This observation was made by a listener named Lurch, who noticed the difference in his dog's footprints on pavement and in snow. This concept was further explored in a book on wolf behavior and ecology, where it was observed that wolves, being lighter-footed than their prey, can move more efficiently in deep snow, giving them an advantage during hunts.

    • Animal adaptations impact their efficiency in different environmentsWolves' webbed toes help them run on snow crusts, while deer's heavy hooves hinder them. Domestic dog breeds like Malamutes also benefit from similar traits. Marine iguanas' sand movement may relate to snow crust principle, but more research is needed.

The physical adaptations of animals, such as their foot structure, play a significant role in their ability to move efficiently in different environments. For instance, wolves have webbed toes that allow them to run on the top of snow crusts, while deer have heavy hooves that get stuck in the snow. This difference can impact predation attempts and survival in colder climates. Additionally, some domestic dog breeds, like the Malamute, have similar traits that enable them to move well in the snow due to their ancestral connection to wolves. An interesting observation was also made about marine iguanas, but further research is needed to determine if their movement on sand relates to the snow crust principle. Lastly, a heartwarming story was shared about a man named Lurch who formed a special bond with iguanas during a hurricane recovery mission in the Virgin Islands.

    • Building Community Connections in Uncertain TimesIn uncertain times, strengthening community bonds and utilizing practical solutions can bring hope, preparedness, and relief from inconveniences.

Even in uncertain times, building and strengthening community connections can bring about hope and preparedness. Neighbor to Neighbor, a California volunteer network, is an excellent example of this, encouraging individuals to form meaningful bonds with their neighbors and help each other out during times of need. Additionally, there are practical solutions to common inconveniences, such as Astepro's fast-acting, steroid-free allergy spray, providing relief from nasal allergy symptoms. Lastly, congratulations and shout-outs were shared during the episode, including Joe's family's new arrival and a memory of a Peruvian experience with raw eggs in Pisco Sours. Overall, the importance of community, fast-acting solutions, and celebrating life's moments were the key themes of this discussion.

    • Risk of Salmonella in Pisco Sour and the Invention of the DrinkThe Pisco Sour, a cocktail with raw egg white, has a low risk of salmonella contamination but using pasteurized egg whites is recommended for safety.

While raw eggs in cocktails like the Pisco Sour carry some risk of salmonella contamination, the likelihood of getting a contaminated egg is relatively low. The CDC once estimated that one out of every 20,000 eggs produced annually in the United States carried salmonella. However, it's important to note that this number may have changed in the last 22 years, and it's always better to err on the side of caution. Victor Morris, an American bartender, invented the Pisco Sour in Peru around the early 1900s using Peruvian pisco as the base liquor, fresh squeezed lemon juice, simple syrup, ice, egg white, and angostura bitters. Pisco is a high proof local unrefined brandy that makes up most of the drink after ice. Although the alcohol content might kill salmonella bacteria, it's not a reliable way to ensure safety. Instead, it's recommended to use pasteurized egg whites for cocktails. The Pisco Sour is not something you would enjoy over the rocks and has no other known uses. Despite being around before the cocktail's invention, pisco must have other uses. The discussion also touched upon the invention of the mirror and various psychological effects related to mirrors in the vault episodes.

    • Nostalgia and the Power of Childhood MemoriesNostalgia can influence our present-day preferences and desires, as childhood memories often hold significant emotional weight. The 'strange face in the mirror illusion' showcases the intriguing ways our perception of ourselves can change under certain conditions.

Our experiences and memories, especially those from our childhood, can significantly influence our present-day preferences and desires. Chuck shared his personal longing to like eggnog, which he associates with fond memories of an eggnog-flavored instant breakfast from his childhood. He also introduced the Pisco Sour as a delicious egg-based cocktail to help address the show's listeners' request for more egg-based drinks. Furthermore, Chuck mentioned an intriguing phenomenon called the "strange face in the mirror illusion," which occurs when people stare at their faces in dim lighting for extended periods, leading to strange visual hallucinations and dissociative experiences. This phenomenon, as studied by Giovanni B. Caputo and others, sheds light on the mysterious ways our perception of ourselves can change under certain conditions. Overall, the discussion highlights the power of nostalgia and the intriguing quirks of human perception.

    • The mirror illusion of seeing past lives or transformed faces is not new and has been reported for decades.18% of people reported seeing their own face transform or resemble a parent's in dim light, while the cause could be the belief or the illusion itself.

The practice of gazing into a mirror in dim light to allegedly see past lives or transformations of one's own face is not a new concept. This technique was reported in metaphysical beliefs at least 35 years ago. In a study conducted by Caputo, 18% of respondents reported seeing their own face transform to resemble that of a parent, while others reported seeing archetypal faces. The cause of these hallucinations could go either way – it could be that the illusion naturally causes people to hallucinate, or that the belief in seeing past lives primes people to report such experiences. The necessary ingredients for the illusion are not just a mirror, but dim light conditions, time, and a face. Caputo's 2013 study found similar effects by having people stare at each other's faces in low light. On a different note, Chuck recommends the movie "Big Trouble in Little China" for a Weird House Cinema examination. Despite being a favorite among the hosts, the movie's odd themes and characters may have puzzled marketers, and the main character, played by Kurt Russell, was actually the sidekick. Overall, these findings add to the intrigue surrounding the strange face in the mirror illusion and the belief in seeing past lives.

What Climate Issues Are You Most Concerned With?

Just the thought of climate issues makes me tense a little. I know I'm not the only one. What if we already have innovative solutions to our climate problems? Would you be interested in learning about some of the novel solutions? Well, we've got the perfect mix of science, agriculture and innovation with our inaugural podcast episode. First, let me begin by thanking you for listening to SAPCO2 podcast. I'd like to begin by stating this is not an attempt to solicit funding of any kind. Second, as we delve into the subject matter of climate change, I know there are various solutions currently competing for recognition. I think that's a good thing. From Elon Musk to Bill Gates, Entrepreneurs are using their ingenuity to tackle today's biggest challenges. So is our podcast pioneer.

Let me introduce our main guest on this podcast episode.

Wilson Hago started worrying about climate issues working for a company in California called Cool Planet Energy Systems located about an hour north of Los Angeles. This company amazingly was worried about the existential risks associated with continued consumption of gasoline products and its effect on planetary temperature. Being backed by venture capital, it collected investments exceeding $150M in its efforts. Wilson learned a lot working for the company and was employee number twenty-two - #22. An important lesson learned was the idea of carbon negativity, where carbon is extracted from the atmosphere via photosynthesis and converted to a long-term storage material.

The advantage of this process is that it gives Hago Energetics a chance at solving a major global problem with the free market, and help rebuild the soil in the process.

Fast forward to present day, Wilson is now running a company called Hago Energetics. At Hago Energetics, the idea of carbon negativity is being extended and applied to carbon dioxide emissions from power plants. The basic idea is to take these emissions and, using renewable energy such as solar panels, wind and biomass, and to convert these emissions to liquid fuels and carbon that will be stored in the soil in perpetuity. The advantage of this process is that it gives Hago Energetics a chance at solving a major global problem with the free market, and help rebuild the soil in the process.

The storage carbon is a soil amendment which can help plants grow faster. In conversations Wilson had with famers in California, while listening to their concerns, he stated to SAPCO2 podcast that

"I know that this product can help these farmers and pretty much all farmers in the world."

Hago Energetics' approach has been vetted by industry professionals. Indeed, the company placed as semi-finalists in the Carbon XPRIZE, a worldwide challenge aiming to find good uses to carbon dioxide. Hago Energetics is prototyping a machine that performs this conversion. In that regard, they are looking at tapping the public markets to help them build this machine. In future podcasts, we will describe the technological approach in more detail. We will also take a broader look at the problem of carbon dioxide conversion and utilization.

Be sure to like, share and subscribe to the SAPC02 podcast. Comment below, we'd like to know what you think. What Climate Issues Are You Most Concerned With?
