Moment 85 - How To Speak So EVERYONE Listens To You: Julian Treasure

    enNovember 25, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • Exploring the Power of Effective Communication through Technology and VoiceInvest in your voice as a powerful tool for professional success by practicing posture, breathing, and intonation.

Effective communication goes beyond just the words we say. During tonight's discussion, we explored the power of using technology, specifically Zoom with Galaxy AI on the new Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, to capture every detail. But we also delved into the importance of enhancing our vocal abilities. Many people overlook the significance of their voice in professional settings, especially when speaking to large audiences. However, having a strong and expressive voice can significantly improve our ability to inspire, lead, and build relationships. It's a shame that formal vocal training is often overlooked, especially considering how often we use our voices in the workplace. Actors and singers understand the importance of mastering their voices, and we can all benefit from adopting some of their techniques. Simple practices like working on our posture, breathing, and intonation can make a big difference. It's time to start paying more attention to our voices and investing in their development, just as we do with reading and writing. After all, our voices are a powerful tool for moving mountains in both our personal and professional lives.

    • Mastering the use of our voice for effective sellingDevelop conscious awareness of voice as a skill, practice good breathing techniques, and focus on effective communication to connect with others and achieve goals.

Selling is an essential skill in life, and the foundation of effective selling lies in mastering the use of our voice. The speaker emphasizes that we sell ourselves and our ideas every day, and developing a conscious awareness of our voice as a skill is crucial for success in various aspects of life. He suggests treating speaking and listening as skills that we need to cultivate, as they significantly impact our outcomes, happiness, and well-being. To speak effectively, the speaker recommends focusing on the vocal toolbox, which includes practicing good breathing techniques, such as resonant breathing, to support clear and powerful communication. By prioritizing the development of our voice as a skill, we can enhance our ability to connect with others, inspire confidence, and achieve our goals.

    • Practice deep breathing for effective communicationDeep breathing improves vocal performance, reduces nerves, and enhances health, making it a valuable habit for public speaking and overall wellness

Proper breathing is essential for effective communication, especially when speaking in public. By practicing deep, diaphragmatic breathing, we can improve our vocal performance and reduce nerves. Aristotle believed that excellence comes from habit, so making deep breathing a regular practice can lead to better habits and overall improvement. Our lungs are capable of more than we realize, and taking deep breaths not only benefits our voice but also our health. Actors and singers use deep breathing techniques to enhance their performances, and even free divers can hold their breath for impressive lengths of time. So, next time you're preparing to speak in public or simply want to improve your lung capacity, take a deep breath and make it a habit.

    • Maintaining lung health and effective communicationDeep breathing, expanding lung capacity, and varying intonation enhance lung health and presentation engagement.

Maintaining good lung health is crucial for overall well-being, as pulmonary embolisms, caused by blood clots reaching the lungs, can be life-threatening. Deep breathing exercises and expanding lung capacity through exercise are important for healthier lungs. Additionally, varying intonation and being sensitive to cultural differences in speaking can make presentations more engaging and effective for listeners. The ups and downs in tone, or intonation, add emotional resonance and prevent monotony. This was emphasized by the speaker's experience of a lackluster response to a talk given in Finland, where cultural norms call for less expressive speech.

    • Understanding and adjusting to audience's prosodyEffective communication goes beyond words. Adjusting to audience's intonation and rhythm can deepen connections. Finns prefer subdued delivery, but it's a skill that requires practice, comfort with silence, and personality.

Effective communication goes beyond just the words we speak. It's about understanding and adjusting to the prosody, or intonation and rhythm, of the audience we're speaking to. Finns, for example, are known for being quiet and reserved, so a more subdued delivery may be more effective than a loud and excited one. However, this isn't a skill that comes naturally to everyone. It requires practice, comfort with silence, and the ability to put personality into our words. Actors, for instance, have to learn to read scripts in interesting ways, and it's important for us to record ourselves and learn from our mistakes. By taking a masterful approach to our voice and communication, we can continually improve and connect more deeply with our audiences.

Moment 165: This Exercise Enhances Mood, Memory & Concentration: David Raichlen

Moment 165: This Exercise Enhances Mood, Memory & Concentration: David Raichlen
In this moment, leading professor of evolutionary biology, David Raichlen discusses how to boost the brain benefits that come from exercise. Most people know that exercise can improve cognitive function, but don’t realise that different sort of exercise, like cardio or strength training, can provide different types of neurological benefits. David says that whilst all exercise is beneficial to the brain, research shows that the best sort of physical activity is a combination of physical and cognitive challenges. This helps the brain function as it copies how humans evolved to find food and survive. So this could mean that the next time you go for a run, choose the great outdoors over the treadmill and try different routes you haven’t taken before. If it's not William and Jordan driving each other crazy, it's definitely driving EPB crazy as they spend half an hour talking about cars. But with three out of four dilemmas from 'anonymous' G&Divas, you know there's plenty to look forward to in the second half. If you have any complaints about the podcast, we'll be dealing with them in the same style as Airline's Jane Boulton, so you may want to keep them to yourself!

Bruno Mastroianni - La disputa felice. Dissentire senza litigare
