Christine Quinn: mental health services in the shelter system

There are over 71,000 people in New York City’s shelter system, including more than 13,000 families with children, a number that continues to climb as more migrants arrive in the five boroughs. Many in the system are escaping trauma, and they would benefit from mental health treatment.

The former speaker of the New York City Council, Christine Quinn, joined Errol to discuss the nonprofit entitled WIN, which she heads. WIN, which stands for Women in Need, is the largest provider of shelter and supportive housing for families in NYC, and Quinn is currently spearheading a proposal to require the Department of Homeless Services to offer mental health services at the 30 largest shelter systems in the city by 2024.

Their conversation also went on to cover the status of the New York Democratic Party since the gubernatorial election, as well as Quinn’s recent bout with cancer, and the importance of cancer awareness and early detection.

He is a chemist by training, a graduate of M.I.T., a bestselling author, a world-class speaker, a pioneer in health education, and an internationally recognized leader in the field of optimal health maintenance.

Decades later, Raymond enjoys an extraordinary level of health and vitality.

Since his recovery, he has devoted himself to helping others to get well and stay well. To teach others how to achieve the level of health he has achieved, Raymond devised a health model (the Beyond Health Model) that cuts through the confusion, takes the mystery out of disease and makes health simple, enabling the average person to take charge of their health. This model is so simple it can be taught to a child, yet so powerful that many have used it to cure themselves of terminal illnesses.

He has written five breakthrough books, the international bestseller Never Be Sick Again, Never Be Fat Again, Never Fear Cancer Again, Never Feel Old Again, and his newest The Great American Health Hoax.

Raymond has addressed health conferences all over the U.S. and in Germany, Switzerland, Greece, Egypt, Canada, Fiji, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, and Mexico.

    LUNG CANCER AND ASBESTOS

    LUNG CANCER AND ASBESTOS
Each year, lung cancer takes more lives than breast, prostate and colon cancers combined. Despite this, lung cancer tends to be a frequently under-funded and misunderstood cancer that has developed a stigma for being the “smoking cancer.” However, lung cancer diagnoses are on the rise in nonsmokers, particularly in women. Last year alone, 25,000 women who had never smoked were diagnosed with lung cancer. (Women & Lung Cancer Study – PDF) Recent studies have pointed to environmental toxins, such as asbestos, as causes for certain types of lung cancer. One of the most prominent studies is the annual report by the President’s Cancer Panel, released last year, which focused on reducing environmental cancer risks and traditionally overlooked lung cancer causes, such as asbestos. (President’s Cancer Panel – Annual Report – PDF) Thanks to the work of the Lung Cancer Alliance, Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation and other non-profit organizations, lung cancer awareness is on the rise. Baron & Budd has contributed generously to these and other organizations and hopes to continue raising awareness of nonsmoker cancers. While mesothelioma is sometimes known as a form of lung cancer caused by asbestos, mesothelioma, when related to the lungs, is actually a cancer of the lining of the lung, while asbestos-related lung cancer occurs within the lung itself. Though these asbestos cancers appear to be virtually the same thing, they vary considerably when it comes to treatment and other medical issues. “I know that if I can’t change the mindset at the beginning, so that the person gets into the mindset of healing, then it doesn’t matter what you do. You can do everything to perfection. You cannot bypass your healing process. In other words, you can’t be a type A person and just want to insert the right salads and nutrients… into your life and still be rushing and not do any self-care and think that you’re going to heal.” 16:06
