    Podcast Summary

    • Finding strength in adversityThrough personal struggles, the women on this podcast showcase the importance of finding positivity and focusing on the good.

Despite the challenges and struggles that each of the three women face in their personal lives, they continue to persevere and bring positivity to the world around them. Whether it's dealing with marital issues, grieving the loss of a loved one, or feeling like they didn't fully process a health scare, they all manage to find the strength to carry on. The show's host, John Deloney, adds to the positive energy with his lighthearted banter and his appreciation for the listeners' kind words and poems. The unexpected appearance of Austin, who stepped in to help out, also brought joy and laughter to the situation. Overall, the episode serves as a reminder that even in the midst of hardships, it's important to find the bright spots and focus on the good.

    • Cherishing the good things and people in our livesFind joy in the midst of difficult experiences, celebrate the good, and honor the memory of loved ones

Even in the midst of difficult and painful experiences, it's important to find and celebrate the good things and the people who bring joy and positivity into our lives. This was evident in Paula's story about her late husband, David. Despite his battle with cancer, Paula shared how he remained optimistic and continued to share his knowledge and kindness with others. After his passing, she made sure to keep his memory alive by sharing stories about him with their son, K. The experience brought them closer together, and they found ways to include him in their journey. This story serves as a reminder to cherish the good things and people in our lives, and to find ways to honor and remember them, even in the face of adversity.

    • Supporting your child during spouse lossHonestly express grief, lean on support, model strength, and share stories to help your child cope with spouse loss.

During the grieving process after the loss of a spouse, it's essential to prioritize both taking care of practical matters and providing emotional support to your child. In the immediate aftermath, focus on being honest about your grief and allowing yourself to cry with your child, while also ensuring you have a support system to lean on. Over time, continue to model positive traits and tell stories of your late spouse to help shape your child's understanding of strength and character. Remember that your child will face challenges due to this loss, but they will also be blessed by your presence and the lessons you impart.

    • Embrace emotions during grieving processAllow yourself to feel emotions fully, surround yourself with supportive people and resources, and honor the unique experiences of both grieving parent and child.

During the grieving process, it's essential to allow oneself to feel the emotions fully, rather than trying to control or hide them. Having male role models in a child's life is also crucial for their development. Grief is not a sprint but a slow process, and it's essential to surround oneself with supportive people and resources, such as counselors and community, to help navigate this journey. Additionally, being financially stable can provide a sense of security during this challenging time. Remember, there's no right or wrong way to grieve, and it's important to honor the unique experiences of both the grieving parent and child. The legacy of the lost loved one can serve as a source of strength and inspiration throughout the healing process.

    • Feeling disconnected despite external signs of happinessIt's normal to have a range of emotions during challenging times and talking to someone can help when feeling stuck and unable to recharge.

It's normal to experience a range of emotions, even during challenging times, and it's okay if those emotions don't align with what others might expect. The speaker shared her observation that many people are feeling drained and disconnected, despite external signs of happiness and success. She emphasized the importance of talking to someone, such as a trusted friend or a therapist, when feeling stuck and unable to recharge. In the call, a listener shared his experience of feeling guilty for not feeling sad after his father had a heart attack. The speaker acknowledged that everyone's relationship with their parents is unique, and it's natural to have different emotions based on those relationships. She encouraged the listener to allow himself to feel whatever emotions come up, without judgment, and to consider reaching out for support if needed.

    • Understanding the Complexity of Emotions during Significant EventsEmotions towards significant events can be complex and unexpected, and it's okay to feel a range of emotions, including sadness, confusion, and even relief. People's reactions to tragedy don't always align with Hollywoodized expectations, and it's essential to be curious about our emotions instead of being judgmental.

Our emotional responses to significant events, such as a family member's health crisis, can be complex and unexpected. The speaker in this conversation experienced sadness, but it wasn't solely for her father's health issue. Instead, she realized her sadness was for her mother's distress. Additionally, she acknowledged that her feelings towards her father have always been complicated, and it's okay not to like or want to be around someone we love. The conversation also touched on how people's reactions to tragedy don't always align with Hollywoodized expectations, and it's essential to be curious about our emotions instead of being judgmental. The speaker shared that she's learned from her work in grief that people often go numb or freeze when faced with loss, and it's a normal response. Overall, the conversation emphasizes the importance of understanding and accepting the complexity of our emotions.

    • Dismissive attitudes towards loved ones' health crisesRecognize the importance of prioritizing loved ones' well-being over appearances. Anger can indicate care and love towards valued things. Expressing feelings to loved ones, even if difficult, is important for healing and growth.

It's important to take serious situations seriously and prioritize loved ones' well-being over appearances. The speaker shared an experience of her father's dismissive attitude towards her mother's health crisis, which left her feeling disgusted and angry. She emphasized that anger can indicate care and love towards the things we value. In the speaker's case, her father's cavalier attitude towards her mother's health and his own was a long-standing issue. The speaker acknowledged the difficulty of expressing her feelings to her father while he was still alive but encouraged the importance of doing so. She also acknowledged the potential for feelings of longing and regret after a loved one's passing. Ultimately, the speaker suggested letting go of the burden of carrying someone else's challenges and focusing on what can make a difference in one's own life.

    • Setting boundaries with difficult family membersIt's okay to express feelings and prioritize emotional health in challenging family situations, despite societal expectations to always be respectful to parents.

It's okay to set boundaries with difficult family members, even if it's hard. You're not broken, evil, or mean for not liking your dad, especially if he's abusive or disrespectful to others. It's important to be respectful and treat parents with dignity, but it's also okay to express your feelings and take care of your emotional health. The speaker shared a personal story about coming to terms with his relationship with his own father and encouraged listeners to do the same. He emphasized that everyone's experiences are unique, and it's important to find ways to cope and heal. The speaker also shared a poem by Bette Midler, "The Rose," which reflects on the idea that love is a seed that can grow despite adversity. Overall, the message is to be kind to yourself and prioritize your emotional well-being in challenging family situations.

Ep 10: Motherload of Grief Pt 1 of 2

Ep 10: Motherload of Grief Pt 1 of 2

Word To Your Mothers welcomes guest Maria to the podcast. Maria is a dear friend of host Sondra Doty. Maria helps others by sharing on grief associated with event-based traumas, as well as chronic traumas (special needs, chronic illness and more.)

An educator for more than a decade, Maria is a speaker, facilitator and mentor for women's grief recovery; she's led Biblical finances and discipleship groups, and she's a support group leader for mothers and educators. Maria has been involved one way or another in youth and children's ministry for many decades and has a background in business administration, marketing, theological studies, communications, small group development, and education. She loves to read, write, travel, and have candid conversations with sincere people. Mara has been married for nearly 30 years and is a parent to three teens and young adults.

This episode is the first in a two-part series. In part one of Motherload of Grief, Sondra Doty and Maria start to break down getting honest with our grief. Even the two of them sharing stories and giving life examples brought up many emotions throughout the episode.

There is a way in life to embrace grieving in the now, but many times in our parenting role grieving has to be put aside for the sake of life happenings and keeping our little humans alive. Life keeps happening and we have to pick ourselves up very quickly.

So how do you grieve with hope while caring for children, household, jobs, and your partner? Pushing past the process can be tempting; it's easy to want to get to "the end result" or road of success and healing right not. However, being honest is the first step to sustaining help.

Honesty requires bravery and comfort. Maria shares examples of how she and her family have been walking this out in their own lives. Honesty is necessary for ourselves and others, though we do need to be careful with our honesty-especially with our children.

It's critical to have a healthy perspective of what grief looks like in failure, pain and how to walk that out into wholeness with God. Fear is a huge roadblock to honesty, because of so many emotions that can come up. The unspoken things are the things that can do the most damage.

Action step before listening to part two: Ask yourself weather you've been honesty with the grief in your life. What is or has been the unspoken that needs to come out? Sit down and give yourself the time to ask this question and write down what's grieving you. Maybe it's not something in the present time, but something from the past that is holding you back. Remember, be brave with your honesty! Step into something that can bring healing to those areas.

When we come back we will talk deeper into getting the appropriate help and engaging a community within that.

Ep. 11 - Jessi's Story: Her Story of Being Adopted, Coping at the Age of 16 with the Sudden Loss of Her Mom, and Parenting a Nonverbal Autistic Son

Today, I'm chatting with Jessi Caldwell, my sister-in-law. Jessi wears many hats – she's a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, and a corporate learning executive.

At just 8 months old, Jessi's life took a profound turn as she found her forever home through adoption. At 16 the sudden loss of her mother reshaped the landscape of her world. But Jessi, being the resilient soul she is, pressed on.

In the chapters of her life that followed, Jessi tied the knot and welcomed three beautiful children into her life, including a nonverbal autistic son. Her story is a testament to the twists and turns life throws at us.

Join us as Jessi reflects on her self-identity through the lenses of being adopted, coping as a teenager with the loss of her mother, and the challenges of parenting a nonverbal autistic son.
