    enMay 15, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Naveen Jain's Approach to Creating MoonshotsIdentify important problems by asking the right questions and focus on solutions that positively impact the lives of billions of people. Success comes from making a meaningful impact, not just making money.

Serial entrepreneur Naveen Jain shares his approach to creating moonshots to solve the world's biggest problems. He believes that asking the right questions is key to identifying important problems. Jain suggests that entrepreneurs should aim to solve problems that can positively impact the lives of billions of people. He believes that this is easier to do than small-scale solutions, as improving billions of people's lives drives loyalty and creates financially successful businesses. Jain's current moonshots aim to make illness optional, and he believes that chronic diseases are preventable and reversible. He encourages entrepreneurs to focus on creating solutions that make a meaningful impact on people's lives, rather than simply focusing on making money.

    • Using Food as Medicine to Combat Chronic Diseases and Making Healthy ChoicesUnderstanding how the human body works at a molecular level can help us make healthier lifestyle choices and combat chronic diseases. By asking different questions about gene expression, we can find unique solutions to improve our health.

Food can be used as medicine to combat chronic diseases and being healthy is a choice. Understanding the human body at a molecular level can help make being healthy and combating chronic diseases a less optional choice. In order to solve tomorrow's problems, we must think differently and ask different questions. Instead of just looking at DNA, we should also take into consideration gene expression. By asking slightly different questions, we can find solutions that no expert would have ever thought about. Being healthy is not just about genetics, but also about lifestyle choices and understanding nutrition.

    • Vio's revolutionary approach to microbiome testing and personalized health recommendationsVio analyzes the behavior and impact of organisms in the gut, providing detailed insights into a person's health and personalized diet recommendations to prevent and treat diseases.

Vio, a company founded by Naveen Jain, focuses on microbiome testing from a unique perspective by not just identifying the organisms in the gut, but also analyzing their behavior and impact on human gene expression. Their RNA testing technology is unique in the industry, providing detailed insights into a person's biological age, immune health, heart health, cognitive health, oral health, dental health, and gum health. Based on this information, Vio provides personalized diet recommendations and supplements, including vitamins, minerals, herbs, digestive enzymes, amino acids, probiotics, and prebiotics. Vio's focus on behavior rather than identity of the microbiome is groundbreaking, opening doors to new possibilities for disease prevention and treatment.

    • The Power of Positive Environment on HealthOur genes do not necessarily determine our destiny, and nurturing a positive environment can have a significant impact on our physical and mental health. Surrounding ourselves with positive influences can lead to a better quality of life.

Naveen Jain's company has analyzed over 500,000 people and changed their lives by promoting healthy living using a unique approach. He believes that genes are not one's destiny and that environment plays a huge role in gene expression. Nurturing one's environment positively affects one's overall physical and mental health. Jain emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with people who uplift and inspire, thus pushing one to become better. Changing one's environment and embracing a positive outlook can lead to improvements in health and overall quality of life.

    • The Importance of Constantly Growing and LearningEmphasize the significance of expanding intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth by learning from others through books, imagination, and surrounding ourselves with people who have bigger goals. Imagination can be an influential tool to overcome limitations and achieve greater success.

The key takeaway from the conversation between Jay Shetty and Naveen Jain is the importance of constantly growing intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually, and how we can learn from others through books, imagination, and surrounding ourselves with people who have even bigger goals. Both speakers shared their personal experiences of overcoming the limiting beliefs enforced by society and how imagination can be a powerful tool to break free from these bounds. It is crucial to realize that the sky is just a figment of our imagination, and we create our own boundaries. By consistently growing and learning, we can overcome these boundaries and achieve greater success.

    • Learning from Life and Choosing What's ValuableKeep an open mind and focus on curiosity and possibility to filter and choose valuable information. Instilling curiosity in children helps them develop a lifelong love of learning and focus on what truly matters in life.

The biggest inspiration and mentor for Naveen Jain has been his own life. He believes that life never stops teaching, and it's up to us to keep learning. Every experience can teach us something if we keep an open mind. In today's world, with an overwhelming amount of information and messaging, it's important to filter and choose what's truly valuable. Naveen suggests asking oneself, 'how does this improve someone else's life?' and focusing on curiosity and possibility, which allows us to dig deeper and learn more. As a parent, the biggest gift we can give our children is curiosity, which instills a lifelong love of learning and a focus on what truly matters in life.

    • How Naveen Jain's Children Are Making a Difference in Their Respective IndustriesEncouraging children to solve big problems can lead to meaningful contributions to society. Love should be unconditional, but approval should be earned through striving for excellence.

Naveen Jain shares how his children have made meaningful impacts in their respective industries by finding the biggest problems and solving them. His eldest son created a non-profit to connect young entrepreneurs with mentors and built a network of influential people. His daughter created a women's health company that removes gender bias in hiring and ensures clinical trials include women. His youngest son is solving the problem of home mortgages. The parenting lesson he shares is that love for children should be unconditional, but approval should not be given freely to encourage them to strive for excellence.

    • The True Measure of Success and the Importance of Nurturing CuriositySuccess is about improving the lives of others, not just accumulating wealth. Parents should guide by example and encourage curiosity in children. Purpose-driven companies and problem-solving are more important than just making money. Approach TV with an imaginative mindset.

The true measure of success is how many lives you improve, not how much money you have. Self-worth should come from what you create, not what you own. Parents should lead by example and show their children what to do, not just tell them. Nurturing curiosity and imagination is crucial, and the younger generation has the power to solve problems that previous generations failed at. Purpose-driven companies and solving real problems should be the focus rather than solely building billion-dollar companies. Watching TV can numb our imagination and curiosity, but it can also be a source of creativity if we approach it with a curious and imaginative mindset.

    • Naveen Jain's Advice for Finding Your True Purpose and Living GratefullyFind your true passion by quitting what you don't enjoy and discovering something you're truly obsessed with. Embrace the ups and downs of life, be mindful of your media consumption and show gratitude for life daily.

Naveen Jain advises people to find their true purpose while also being grateful for the life they are living. He suggests that individuals should quit doing things they don't enjoy and find something they are genuinely obsessed with in order to jump out of bed every morning with the drive to solve a problem. Passion is for hobbies, but true winners have an obsession with solving a problem. People should not seek a smooth life, but instead embrace the ups and downs as a sign of being alive. Lastly, Jain encourages individuals to be mindful of their media consumption and be grateful for their life by starting each meal with grace or prayer.

    • The Key to Managing Stress at Work and HomeLove is essential for managing stress, even in tasks you don't enjoy. Finding something to love or learn from in all jobs, even those outside of your purpose, can improve skills and ease the transition to your purpose.

Constant stress at work and home puts our bodies in a constant fight or flight mode, leading to health issues. Love is the key to staying in the parasympathetic mode. Finding what you love is necessary and different at different times. Even when doing tasks you don't enjoy, try to find something about them to love or learn from. All jobs, even those outside of our purpose, can teach us skills that are useful later. The ability to memorize and discipline oneself can come from any job. So find something to love in your job, and it will be easier to transition to your purpose.

    • Focusing on learning over earning for children's successEncourage children to pursue their interests and value learning over money. Expose them to various fields and invest in their education to build lifelong skills for success.

Parents should focus on teaching their children skills and encouraging them to learn, rather than pushing them to earn money through menial tasks. Exposing kids to different fields can help them discover their true interests and passions. It is important to instill the value of learning and to help children understand that money should not be the sole motivator. Encouraging them to pursue unpaid internships or courses can help them build skills that will last a lifetime. Naveen Jain's philosophy of investing in his children's education and exposing them to various fields has been successful in guiding them towards success.

    • The Benefits of Exposing Children to Diverse ExperiencesEncouraging children to explore diverse fields can help them discover their true passion, expand their interests and achieve great things. Parents and educators should support unconventional aspirations and promote practical applications of subjects.

Encouraging children to explore different fields can lead to discovering their true passion, as seen in the case of Naveen Jain's daughter. Exposing oneself to a variety of ideas and learning opportunities can lead to expanding one's interests beyond preconceived notions. The education system should aim to broaden students' horizons by emphasizing the practical applications of subjects and encouraging diverse experiences. It is important as parents and educators to support children in exploring their unconventional aspirations, as they may lead to great achievements and contributions to the world.

    • Why Discomfort, Trying New Things, and Broadening Perspectives are Key in Parenting and Life.Stepping outside our comfort zones, embracing diversity, prioritizing mental health, and setting boundaries for love and sacrifice promote growth, creativity, and healthier relationships with ourselves and others.

Discomfort is where growth comes from, and trying new things can lead to innovation and creativity. It is important to be exposed to ideas and people who are unlike us to broaden our perspectives. Parenting involves not only encouraging the improvement of others' lives but also prioritizing one's mental health and personal wellbeing. Unconditional love, like that between a parent and child, is powerful and can have a significant impact on one's life. However, there are boundaries to love, and sacrifice should not come at the cost of one's own wellbeing.

    • The Power of Unconditional Love and Encouraging Creativity in Children.Parents should provide a safe and loving environment for their children to explore their passions and interests, and encourage them to think outside the box and pursue their dreams no matter how audacious they may seem.

Unconditional love from a parent only seeks the well-being of their child, even in the face of harm caused by the child's mistakes. However, parents should not try to mold their children into mini versions of themselves but instead expose them to various experiences and ideas to help them create their own canvas. It is important to instill curiosity, imagination, and inspiration in children to help them pursue audacious ideas that may seem crazy to others. Learning should never stop, and setting ambitious goals to improve the world around us should always be the guiding force in our actions.

Do You Compare Yourself or Your Relationship to Others? 5 Surprising Ways to Stop Letting Comparison Steal Your Happiness

Do You Compare Yourself or Your Relationship to Others? 5 Surprising Ways to Stop Letting Comparison Steal Your Happiness

Do you compare your relationship to others?

How can you identify and manage your triggers for comparison?

Today, Jay introduces the concept of social comparison theory, explaining the differences between upward - where we compare ourselves to those we perceive as better off, can lead to feelings of inadequacy if done with envy rather than a mindset of learning, and downward comparisons which involves comparing ourselves to those worse off, which can provide a temporary boost in self-esteem but is ultimately unproductive and unkind.

He shares practical strategies for reducing comparison, such as being mindful of social media usage, identifying personal triggers, and investing in self-improvement. Jay also stresses the importance of understanding the deeper, often hidden aspects of people's lives and why we usually compare our internal struggles with others' external successes, leading to a distorted and unfair self-assessment.

    In the episode, you'll learn:

    How to identify your goals

    How to set mutual goals

How to be mindful of your triggers

    How to invest in self-improvement

By seeking deeper connections and understanding the full context of others' lives, we can develop more empathy and reduce the impulse to compare and shift our focus from external comparisons to internal growth and relational strength, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and authentic life.

How to Reprogram Your Genes Using Meditation with Dr Dawson Church, PhD

How to Reprogram Your Genes Using Meditation with Dr Dawson Church, PhD
    https://www.patreon.com/EarthandWater

Beginning –Quantifying the “woo-woo” with statistics that show the effects of things like energy medicine, meditation and mindfulness having a significant impact on the mind and body. These practices have been shown to decrease struggles with problems like pain, anxiety, depression, trauma and more. Studies on EFT that show off the chart results.

How these alternative practices have an effect on things that we previously thought we had no control over like gene expression. Better immunity, lower levels of inflammation in the body, 60% decrease in PTSD symptoms, neuroplasticity. The three most effective kinds of meditation is community, intensity and compassion. Meditations that draw you into positive emotions like gratitude, joy, love and compassion for others trigger gene expression quicker than other forms.

You don’t need any time to dedicate to your meditation practice. You can easily work it into the spaces between the tasks of your everyday life. Meditation is simply controlling your thoughts rather than having them run ramped. We can practice this anytime we think about it whether it’s in the shower, in the car, cooking dinner or when we lay down to sleep at night.

The goal of meditation is not to learn to be good at meditating. The goal of meditation is to learn how to be in a meditative state in your everyday life.

9:55 –Meditation is all just emotional regulation. Imagine where we would all be if we were taught as a child how to do that. Meditation creates more neural connections in the centers of the brain where we need them. Whatever we focus on is where these connections are made and strengthened.

We all know people who are always looking for the next thing to upset them. This constant focus on the negative increases the strength of the areas responsible for them. If we’re always activating these stressors, we’re doing damage to our bodies.

Higher levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) results in lowered immune systems, reduced muscle mass and bone density, poor memory and learning skills, reduced skin elasticity, you age faster and have a shorter life span, have an increased risk of cancer, heart disease and other health concerns and diseases. Uncontrolled emotions are literally killing us, deteriorating our cells and bodily functions and making it impossibly hard for our systems to repair and heal anything.

Stress management is the number one thing we should be focusing on. After we get our emotions and stress levels in check, there’s not a ton more we need to do to heal mental, emotional and physical concerns.

11:30 –Emotional regulation is the first step, the 2nd step is focused awareness. The prefrontal cortex is responsible for self obsession. Monks and nuns don’t have that focus. They’re focus lies on others and the divine. Their prefrontal cortex of the “me and mine” is very quiet.

We’re naturally inclined to be self centered and it takes “training” the mind in order to switch the focus from a “me” to a “we”. Being aware of this can help you recognize it in yourself and those around you which can begin to improve your relationships.

“Forgiveness” is a word that triggers most people. They don’t want to try and analyze the situation to look at things from the other person’s perspective. They want to throw walls of hate up and never think about it or look at it again. Most people aren’t trying to act with ill intent. Most people are trying their best with what they have available.

19:20 –Meditation helps us learn how to slow things down and pause so that we can respond rather than react. You don’t forgive others for them. You forgive them for yourself. Holding those who have done you wrong in heart centered compassion lowers your stress levels and therefore the damage the turmoil is doing to you. When we’re children, we have very little control over the happenings around us. When we become an adult, we have more power over the control. People who have a history of childhood trauma through abuse, neglect, or other, have higher rates of cancer, heart disease, obesity, all kinds of illnesses.

Reparenting the self means taking the stance of the adult and deciding to go within and do the work to heal the inner child. It means choosing to release the baggage you’ve been carrying around with you that not only makes you heavy, which holds you back and makes happiness hard to find but also effects every relationship you have in your life.

Relationships go far beyond the relationships you have with yourself and people. Our unhealed baggage effects our relationships with food, with money, with our career, literally everything in our lives. It takes up energy to carry it around and once we release it, we free up the energy channels to be able to work on these relationships in a healthy way.

26:20 –Delta and theta are the two primary brain waves we experience in the first 5 years of life. Delta is the brain wave of deep sleep. Theta is the dreaming state. They’re also the states of trance, super learning and altered states.Thoughts trigger genes. Every time you repeat a stressful story, your body reacts as though the situation is occurring again. They’ve put groups of meditators and even monks in cities and observed the crime rates in those cities drop. Meditation heals the individual and the world.Trauma is passed through our genetics to our children. So we have whole groups of people who struggle with the effects of trauma that they themselves didn’t even experience. Ancestral healing can help with some of these things. We can measure your energy field up to 15 feet away from your body.

40:10 –Are there tons of problems in the world? Yes. But overwhelming amounts of studies show that the world is improving and we’re currently living in a point of history that’s better for the majority of the people on the planet than it has ever been. Again, we’re not saying there aren’t tons of issues still and for sure there are a lot of people in the world who suffer everyday.

We’re hardwired to pay more attention to the negative because historically, it kept us alive to put our focus on the things we didn’t want. Mainstream media is a business and plays on this wiring to their favor. Therefore, they use all of the bad things in the world to keep us engaged and their numbers up. It’s not profitable for them to show us or tell us about all of the good and improvement the world is seeing.

This constant bombardment of the bad in the world makes it feel as though things are worsening. Which can really amp up our stress and anxiety levels and distract us even further from the building of our own peace and happiness. Both of which have to be intentionally built. You’re not just going to stumble across either. You have to choose to focus on the positive.

Dr. Oded Rechavi: Genes & the Inheritance of Memories Across Generations

Dr. Oded Rechavi: Genes & the Inheritance of Memories Across Generations
In this episode, my guest is Oded Rechavi, Ph.D., professor of neurobiology at Tel Aviv University and expert in how genes are inherited, how experiences shape genes and remarkably, how some memories of experiences can be passed via genes to offspring. We discuss his research challenging long-held tenets of genetic inheritance and the relevance of those findings to understanding key biological and psychological processes including metabolism, stress and trauma. He describes the history of the scientific exploration of the “heritability of acquired traits” and how epigenetics and RNA biology can account for some of the passage of certain experience-based memories. He discusses the importance of model organisms in scientific research and describes his work on how stressors and memories can be passed through small RNA molecules to multiple generations of offspring in ways that meaningfully affect their behavior. Nature vs. nurture is a commonly debated theme; Dr. Rechavi’s work represents a fundamental shift in our understanding of that debate, as well as genetic inheritance, brain function and evolution.
