When I felt blah recently, HALT helped me realize I was hungry and tired, making me feel better instantly.

    947 How You Handle Life's Detours Determines Your Direction

    When life happens, it's how you handle life's detours determines your direction.

    Personal development and growth is never easy. Change is tough. But if you desire to live your dreams with passion daily, you're going to have detours.

    Even Jesus warned us of this. 

    "In this world you will have trouble..." ~ John 16:33

    When we lived in Houston, there were always unexpected, random road closures, detours. I would be forced to go out of my way to get to where I needed to be. And with traffic, that could add another 45 minutes to the travel time. UGH!!!

    When you wake-up in the morning hoping to coast through the day, only to hit a few detours.

    • unexpected traffic accident
    • call from school that your child is sick
    • broken appliance so you are the phone to get it scheduled for repair
    • long line at the grocery store
    • running late, like every day.

    How you handle life's detours determines your direction.

    Let's get to the heart of your typical response.

    1. VICTIM - Oh woes me! Everyone is out to get me. Why can't I catch a break?
    2. CONTROLLER - I will do this my way. Ego plays into it. It's all about #1 - YOU!
    3. GUARDIAN - You want to play it safe. No risk.

    What do you find in common with all three of these responses?

    It's about guarding, protecting you and where you feel comfortable. You want to protect your heart.

    You don't want to take the detour! That makes you uneasy, mad, angry, even depressed. So you huddle and hunker.

    But what's missed is the second part of John 16:33...

    "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." ~ John 16:33

    The K.I.S.S. ~ Choose safety or significance!

    1. How do you want to live your life?
      • With caution tape OR
      • With impact and influence
    2. What do you want your life to stand for, to mean?
      • Protective of you OR
      • Unconditional love, willing to reach beyond you and your competencies
    3. Where do you want to go, the direction you're headed?
      • Safety OR
      • Significance

    If you choose SAFETY, you live life based on experiences, what you can control, and within the confines of your comfort zone.

    If you choose SIGNIFICANCE, you impact and influence; living life with God holding you up!

    Once beer-swilling rugby players, my guests on this week’s episode are identical twins Stephen and David, who now make up The Happy Pear. They share their incredible journey into healthy vegan living and talk about their desire to start a health food revolution – with the goal of making healthy food and lifestyle mainstream. It all started with a small humble vegetable shop and they now own a chain of natural food shops and cafés in Ireland as well as having their own plant-based food range in the UK. But for The Happy Pear, the cafés were also about creating a community around them, something which they have achieved in a truly inspiring way. We talk about how fundamental community is to our happiness and health. Their story is captivating and their energy is almost tangible.
