Offline: DeRay Mckesson on How Twitter Saved Black Lives

    enNovember 28, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • Social media platforms serve different purposes in our lives, like different places in the physical worldTwitter: open conversation and community, Instagram: constant prom with curated image pressure, Facebook: staying connected with family and old friends, Tumblr: no longer the same as a computer lab, nuances may change over time.

Social media platforms serve different purposes in our lives, much like different places in our physical world. Six years after the initial comparison, Twitter still feels like home, a place of open conversation and community. Instagram, on the other hand, has evolved into a constant prom experience, complete with video and the pressure to present a curated image. Facebook remains the digital equivalent of grandma's house, a place for staying connected with family and old friends. Unfortunately, Tumblr, once likened to a computer lab, no longer exists in the same form. Overall, these comparisons continue to apply, but the nuances of each platform's purpose and user experience may shift over time.
