    • Historians discuss Trump's distorted perspective on historical eventsHistorical accuracy and critical thinking are crucial in navigating misinformation and marketing tactics.

During an HBO podcast on Real Time with Bill Maher, historians John Legiam and Jane Ferguson discussed Donald Trump's distorted perspective on historical events, such as the Battle of Gettysburg. Trump's lack of understanding and trivialization of significant historical events raises concerns. Meanwhile, Jillian Michaels shared insights on identifying influencers pushing unhealthy products, emphasizing the importance of relying on common sense and knowledge gained from an early age. The discussion underscores the significance of accurate historical knowledge and critical thinking in navigating misinformation and marketing tactics.

    • Reporting the Gaza War: Challenges for JournalistsInternational media faces restrictions entering Gaza, Palestinian journalists risk their lives, and politics can be unpredictable.

Covering the war in Gaza presents significant challenges for journalists. International media faces restrictions on entering the region, making it difficult to report firsthand. Palestinian journalists, on the other hand, risk their lives while trying to document the emotional and volatile conflict. The situation is challenging for journalists both on and off the ground, with many having lost their lives in the process. A recent development in the news landscape was the sudden resignation of the Irish prime minister, Leo Varadkar, which caught many by surprise. While the reasons for his departure remain unclear, it served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of politics.

    • Irish PM's sudden resignation leaves country in uncertaintyFBI warns of Chinese hackers planning to attack US infrastructure, potentially causing chaos in finance and air traffic sectors, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing cybersecurity measures.

The sudden resignation of Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, who recently returned from the United States, has left the country in a state of uncertainty. With no clear reason given for his departure, speculation has run rampant about potential scandals or mismanagement of funds. Meanwhile, FBI Director Christopher Wray's warning of Chinese hackers planning to attack US infrastructure highlights the growing threat of cyber warfare. This potential attack could disrupt key infrastructure sectors, including finance and air traffic, causing widespread chaos. The question remains whether cyber attacks will be treated as seriously as physical attacks in terms of response and diplomatic action. Regardless, the impact could be significant and far-reaching. As we navigate this increasingly interconnected world, it's essential to stay informed and prioritize cybersecurity measures to mitigate potential risks.

    • Unconventional warfare and its impact on national securityThe use of unconventional warfare, including cyber attacks and germ warfare, poses significant risks and challenges to national security. Careful consideration is required before retaliating, especially when dealing with potential health crises.

The use of unconventional warfare, such as cyber attacks and germ warfare, poses significant risks and challenges to national security. The potential impact of these attacks on a country's homeland can be traumatic and horrifying, reaching into people's homes, hospitals, and government services. Retaliation in kind may not always be the best response, especially when dealing with potential health crises like COVID-19. The decision to retaliate should be made carefully and responsibly, considering the potential consequences and the party responsible. The speaker also mentioned that they do not believe COVID-19 was deliberately released but acknowledged the possibility. They also shared their skepticism towards the concept of cheat days for healthy eating.

    • Balanced Approach to Healthy EatingAim for 80% healthy foods, 20% less-optimal options. Mindful choices when eating out. No guilt for occasional indulgence. Avoid keeping less-optimal foods at home.

It's not necessary to completely eliminate less-than-optimal foods from your diet, but trying to label certain days as "cheat days" can create a negative psychological impact and make those foods more desirable. Instead, aim for a balanced approach where 80% of your calories come from healthy foods, and allow for 20% from less-optimal options. When eating out, understand that restaurants prioritize taste over health, so be mindful of your choices but don't feel guilty for indulging occasionally. It's essential to recognize that moderation and balance are key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, avoid keeping less-than-optimal foods at home as it can lead to overindulgence.

208 - Ultra-processed food unwrapped with Henry Dimbleby

208 - Ultra-processed food unwrapped with Henry Dimbleby

Henry Dimbleby, co-founder of Leon, food campaigner and writer, joins the podcast this week to talk about the dangers of a diet high in ultra-processed foods – that is, foods with a long list of ingredients such as preservatives and emulsifiers not typically found in home cooking.

While convenient, ultra-processed foods such as breakfast cereals and mass-produced breads do not fill us up, encourage us to eat more and contribute to weight gain, Henry says.

‘Food is by far the biggest thing making us sick,’ he says.

In this episode, Henry talks to Dr Louise about breaking the ultra-processed food cycle, ignoring calories and eating more food cooked from scratch. They also discuss his new book Ravenous, which looks at how to eat in a way that is better for you and the planet.

    Henry’s three tips:

    1. Exercise has huge benefits for your health, so find an enjoyable form. Don’t think about it as being for weight loss, but for other health benefits.
    2. Cook from scratch as much as you can and include lots of fibrous green veg and pulses in your dishes.
    3. Try and reduce ultra-processed, plastic-wrapped food packed with mystery ingredients in your diet. Getting rid of breakfast cereals is a good place to start.
