    Podcast Summary

    • Midterm Elections and Student LoansMidterms in 2022 are crucial, focusing on issues like abortion, climate, and freedoms. Student loans' repayment pause ends in Feb 2022, Biden yet to fulfill $10k debt cancellation promise. Reasons: Biden's enthusiasm, focus on Build Back Better bill. Potential compromise: Suspend payments for most, except MBAs.

The midterm elections in 2022 are of great importance, with issues such as abortion, climate, and basic freedoms on the ballot. Volunteering and getting involved in these elections is encouraged through the "midterm madness" program at votesaveamerica.com/midterms. Regarding student loans, the pause on repayments, which was put in place due to the pandemic, is set to end in February 2022. Additionally, President Biden has not yet fulfilled his campaign promise to cancel up to $10,000 in student debt for every borrower. The reasons behind these decisions may include Biden's perceived lack of enthusiasm for the proposal and the desire to focus on passing the Build Back Better bill first. The politics of this issue lie in the tension between the need for emergency measures and the strong economy. A possible compromise could be continuing the suspension of payments for all but those with MBA debt.

    • Student loan payment pause and child tax credit expire this monthThe Biden administration's decision not to extend the student loan payment pause and child tax credit could leave some people in financial hardship, and negotiations with individual senators could be lengthy and challenging.

There is a strong argument for extending the student loan payment pause for another couple of months, as there doesn't seem to be a legal reason preventing it. However, the administration's decision not to extend it could leave some people in a difficult financial situation, as both the student loan pause and expanded child tax credit are set to expire this month. The fear is that waiting for the Build Back Better bill to pass could lead to a situation similar to the eviction moratorium extension, where relief was short-lived and ultimately ineffective. Additionally, going up against a large Kyrsten Sinema might be challenging, but taking on 100 tiny Joe Manchins could also be exhausting due to the number of individual negotiations required. Overall, it's essential to keep pushing for answers from the Biden administration regarding their decision not to extend the student loan payment pause.

    • Impact of personal choices and commitmentsSenators' dedication to fitness can lead to missed votes, and coffee orders reveal personal preferences, with some considering a French vanilla Dunkin' Donuts as a treat. The 'Succession' finale aligned with expectations, and personal stories were shared, showcasing the group's diverse interests and experiences.

Commitment and personal choices can have significant implications, whether it's in politics or coffee orders. Senators like Kyrsten Sinema's dedication to fitness can lead to missed votes, while Starbucks orders reveal personal preferences, with some even considering a French vanilla Dunkin' Donuts as a treat. The discussion also touched on the entertainment industry, with thoughts on the "Succession" finale aligning with expectations. Additionally, the group shared personal stories, such as Dan's late coffee-drinking start and Jfries's experiences as a Starbucks barista. Overall, the conversation showcased the group's diverse interests and shared experiences.

    • Appreciation for 'Succession' and Jeremy Strong's performanceViewers admire the authenticity and dedication of Jeremy Strong's character, enjoying the show's compelling storylines and luxurious settings, while remaining indifferent to industry power struggles.

The discussion revolved around the appreciation for the exquisiteness of the show "Succession" and the admiration for Jeremy Strong's performance. The viewers were convinced of the authenticity of Strong's character and his dedication to his craft, despite the cynical attitude of some towards the industry. They also expressed their excitement about the potential directions the show could take in future seasons, and their indifference towards the power struggle over the dying right-wing cable company. The conversation also touched upon the enjoyment of watching the characters argue and interact in various luxurious settings. Ultimately, the group's shared love for the show and its characters shone through, with a reminder that the essence of the show lies in creating compelling television, rather than focusing on the behind-the-scenes drama.

    • Discussing Preferred TV Shows and Holiday WishesPeople enjoy diverse TV content, from high-quality shows to less challenging ones, and have different holiday gift preferences

Despite the abundance of high-quality television content, some people still find pleasure in watching less challenging shows, like "Emily in Paris," even if they admit it's not their cup of tea. Another topic discussed was holiday wishes, with some preferring practical gifts like laptop bags or Kindles, while others reminisced about favorite holiday movies and memories. During the conversation, Rachel Maddow and the "Sex and the City" reboot were mentioned as contrasting examples of television quality. Overall, the group shared their thoughts on various topics with a mix of humor and sincerity.

    • Meeting former presidents leaves lasting impressionEncounters with prominent figures, no matter how small, can create unforgettable moments and leave a profound impact on people's lives.

Even the smallest acts of kindness and decency from prominent figures can have a profound impact on people's lives. The speaker shared a heartwarming story about bringing his mother to the White House and meeting former presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama. These encounters, which included personal conversations and photo opportunities, left a lasting impression on his mother and created unforgettable moments for both of them. The speaker also highlighted the importance of simple pleasures, such as favorite dishes and cocktails, during the holiday season. While anticipating the release of a new video game, Elden Ring, the group reminisced about various pop culture references and shared amusing anecdotes. Overall, the conversation underscored the power of connection, whether it be through personal interactions or shared experiences.

    • Discussing George R.R. Martin's collaboration with Hidetaka Miyazaki and book recommendationsAn avid fan shares excitement for Martin and Miyazaki's collaboration, recommends crime novels and lighter fiction, and discusses the potential of AI as the next generation of technology.

The speaker is an avid fan of Soulsborne games and is excited about the upcoming collaboration between George R.R. Martin and Hidetaka Miyazaki, despite Martin's reputation for procrastination on his book series. The speaker also shared book recommendations, expressing a preference for crime novels and lighter fiction to get back into reading. The conversation touched upon the concept of artificial intelligence and the idea that it represents the next generation of computing technology. The speaker expressed a fondness for Haruki Murakami's "Clara in the Sun" and recommended it as a light, enjoyable read. Overall, the conversation revolved around shared interests in gaming, literature, and technology.

    • Recognizing and critiquing bad takes in politicsAcknowledging and poking fun at misguided perspectives in politics can help maintain a healthy perspective and keep us grounded in reality.

Despite the importance of serious issues, it's essential to recognize and critique the "bad takes" in politics. These misguided perspectives can shape public discourse and influence decision-making. During a podcast episode, the hosts discussed some of the worst takes of the year, including Dan Pfeiffer's stance on Asia and the idea that giving Joe Manchin what he wants is the best approach. They also poked fun at overly optimistic headlines and the belief that Trump's absence from Twitter is a detriment. In essence, acknowledging and poking fun at bad takes can help maintain a healthy perspective and keep us grounded in reality.

    • Perception vs Reality: The Changing Landscape of Political LeadershipPolitical leaders' perception and reality can differ significantly, and staying informed and open to new information is crucial for understanding the complexities of political dynamics.

The perception of political leaders and their actions can change rapidly, especially during times of crisis. In the case of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, he was criticized heavily for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic but, as of September 2021, Florida had the 11th worst per capita death rate among the 50 states. Despite this, DeSantis continues to lead Republican nomination polls. Similarly, predictions about President Trump's influence over the Republican party have shifted significantly. In early 2021, it was believed that the events of the Capitol riot would lead to Trump's removal from the party, but this did not come to pass. These examples illustrate the importance of staying informed and open to new information, as well as the complexity of political dynamics.

    • The Democratic Party's lack of popularity is the real issueDespite efforts to address Republican tactics, the underlying cause of these issues is the Democratic Party's lack of popularity. Misinformation spread by public figures can have serious consequences, while media skittishness in reporting on COVID-19 can hinder public understanding.

While issues like gerrymandering and vote suppression are important, the Democratic Party's bigger problem is that Republicans are currently more popular than Democrats. The focus on Republican tactics to undermine democracy should not overshadow the need to address the underlying cause of these tactics: the lack of popularity for the Democratic Party. Another issue discussed was the misinformation spread by public figures, such as Aaron Rodgers and his claims about being "immunized." This misinformation can have serious consequences, including the spread of COVID-19 and the delay of vaccinations. In the realm of COVID-19 coverage, there was criticism of the media for focusing on the minority voices opposing boosters, despite the clear evidence supporting their effectiveness. This skittishness in reporting, driven by the traumatic experience of covering the initial pandemic response, was criticized as detrimental to the public's understanding of the situation. On a more optimistic note, some think pieces argue that we will never return to the "normal" pre-pandemic world. Instead, we must learn to adapt and find new ways to live and work in a post-pandemic world. Overall, the conversation highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of political and public health issues, as well as the need for accurate and clear reporting on these matters.

    • Finding a path forward with the pandemicConfidence in returning to normalcy through regular boosters, treatments, and understanding the ongoing pandemic.

Despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, there is a path forward towards living with the virus and returning to normalcy. Dr. Vivek Murthy expressed confidence that we will find ways to participate in life, see family and friends, and work. It's important for everyone to get comfortable with this path and understand that regular boosters and treatments like Pfizer's pill can help. The conversation also touched on the political aspect of the pandemic, with the Democratic Party being seen as emphasizing caution. The discussion also covered personal experiences, including getting vaccinated with Pfizer and Moderna, and expressed skepticism towards other vaccines like Sputnik. The overall message is that while the pandemic is not over yet, there is hope and progress being made.

#7 We Can All Do Better

#7 We Can All Do Better

I was planning on releasing an episode from another amazing guest but given recent events, I think it’s an important time to stop and reflect about a new era that we have well and truly entered. This is an episode about tolerance and finding common ground to overcome some of the biggest problems the world is facing. These thoughts have been weighing heavy on my mind for a few years now, but over the past few months I’ve been putting it altogether. Challenging my beliefs and assumptions. Although many of us are genuinely concerned with the direction the world is heading in, I believe that we can all do more. We can all do better. I was honestly a bit nervous about releasing this episode, because I don’t want to sound like I’m coming to the defence, or attacking any certain type of person. I am not discrediting real experiences or feelings from people either. I also don’t want to come across as preachy. My aim is to open up dialogue and challenge you to think further about your role, whatever your opinion is, and how you can do better. The purpose of this podcast is not only about doing good and hearing about different ways to do good. But it’s also about challenging misconceptions and challenging beliefs, ideas and assumptions. It’s open having open discussion and critique in a supportive community that cares about a sustainable future for every being. The fact that I even feel the need to preface this episode with that little disclaimer means that I am anxious about the response that it’s going to get, even though the whole point is to open dialogue. How ironic is that! Despite my anxiety, I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas, so long as they’re constructive.
