Raising All the Boats

For months, the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and oppression around the world have been on the minds of most. Finally both back in the studio, Boston and Lyndon discuss their experiences with local actions of solidarity, the lack of overt Christian presence, and how that can be rectified. They also discuss antisemitism, extreme forms of protest in the US, and what Christians as individuals and a whole can be doing to support Palestinian people. 

Boston and Lyndon discuss their experiences with multifaith relationships; both at UVic, and in the wider community. How, in each space, there have been and continue to be opportunities for relationship and community building. They go on to talk about where the foundations are needed for this building, and how it can happen in the future.

Boston is away this week, so Lyndon dives deep into Lenten practices, the 40 days before Holy Week and Easter. What if we all had a bit more space for rest in our lives so that we could fully flourish as humans? Collectively as we dismantle systems of oppression, spiritual practices can ground us in love, so that we have time for creative pursuits as well.

Lyndon sits down to talk with Pam Rocker, with Affirming Care in Calgary. They talk about why conversion therapy is still a thing in Canada despite there being a federal ban and bylaws in some cities prohibiting the practice. They also look towards organizing and building coalitions for change.

Boston and Lyndon talk about raising all boats during times of great conflict and distress in the world. They reflect on strategies of building that ground us in relationships, love of neighbour, and open up possibilities for the future.

Jake McPhee is a counsellor who specializes in LGBTQ+ and addiction counselling. He has a practice called Walking Together Counselling in the Colwood area. Jake discusses over a decades experience working with those struggling with addiction, both in Ontario and here in Victoria. He also talks about how 2SLGBTQ+ people are often overrepresented among those struggling with homelessness and addiction. Jake's practice can be found on Facebook at "Walking Together Counselling"

Boston and Lyndon sit down with Izzy Adachi, an organizer with Greater Victoria Acting Together (GVAT), on the role of GVAT in the community and what she does in her capacity as organizer. Izzy also discusses her previous experiences with community organizing: most notably in 2020 when she was a leader in unionizing the first Starbucks in North America since the early 2000s.

Boston and Lyndon reflect on their experiences starting the podcast, both joys and harder lessons, and some of the guests they interviewed in the last year. They also talk about their hopes for 2024, both for the podcast and for the church-at-large.

In September, a group of pastors In Winnipeg quickly organized a pastoral care line for 2SLGBTQIA+ people after mass anti-Queer organizing across Canada. Though funded by the Anglican Diocese of Rupert's Land and the Lutheran Manitoba/Northwestern Ontario Synod, the volunteers for the care line came from the Lutheran, Anglican, United, and Mennonite denominations. The pastors on the front lines of organizing this care line join the podcast and talk about their experiences, the successes, and how other places can follow their example, among other topics.
