REUNIONS: Is there value in remembering our younger selves?

    enOctober 12, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • A chance to revisit the past and remember who we once wereReunions provide a unique opportunity to connect with old friends, remember shared experiences, and even redeem past mistakes.

Reunions serve as a powerful reminder of our past and a chance to reconnect with ourselves and others. The word "reunion" comes from the Latin "re," meaning "back" or "again," and the Old French "unir," meaning "to unite." This concept of going back and undoing the past to remember who we once were is a significant part of the reunion experience. Reunions can evoke a range of emotions, from joy and euphoria to regret and resentment. They offer an opportunity to reconnect with old friends, remember shared experiences, and even redeem past mistakes. For many, reunions can be a source of comfort and a reminder of the connections that have shaped our lives. Whether it's a college reunion or a gathering of longtime friends, reunions provide a chance to revisit the past and reaffirm the present. So, whether you're feeling nostalgic or eager to reconnect, remember that reunions offer a unique opportunity to remember who we once were and who we are today.

    • A look back at our formative yearsOur identities are shaped by experiences, even if they bring setbacks and disappointments, we can learn and adapt.

College and high school reunions serve as a time machine, transporting us back to our younger selves and the formative years of our lives. At 18, we enter college with idealistic expectations and a sense of naivete. We make choices based on our dreams and aspirations, but reality often hits hard. Some of us may have unrealistic expectations about our careers or academic pursuits, only to find out that the path to success requires hard work and determination. For instance, one person shared how they went to college with a fantasy of becoming an actor after experiencing a hippie-like theater education in high school. However, the reality of being in a competitive acting conservatory was a rude awakening. The key takeaway is that our identities are shaped by our experiences, and while we may encounter setbacks and disappointments, we can use them as learning opportunities to grow and adapt.

    • College experiences shape identity and psycheCollege experiences, marked by neurological developments, help form identity, enable skill learning, and shape us for the future, despite ambivalent feelings.

College experiences, particularly during late adolescence and early adulthood, serve as significant periods of social learning, bonding, and identity formation. These years are marked by neurological developments that enable us to learn new skills and navigate challenges, including failure, which become foundational to our psyche. The competitive nature of some college programs, like the conservatory mentioned, can be especially initiatory, pushing individuals out of their comfort zones and shaping them for the future. However, college experiences can also evoke ambivalent feelings, with some people cherishing the memories and others finding them too painful to revisit. Overall, these formative years leave a deep and lasting impact on our lives.

    • Exploring the bridge between past and present selvesReunions offer a chance to connect with peers, share experiences, and gain perspective on personal growth and self-discovery

Reunions serve as a bridge between our past selves and our present selves, allowing us to make sense of the redirections and changes in our lives. During the early reunions, there was a focus on reporting achievements and comparing notes, but the tone was more about connection and understanding how each other's paths had evolved. The feeling of inadequacy or envy was present, but it was overshadowed by the desire to forge meaning between our past and present selves. The reunions were a place to explore the tension between conforming to societal norms and expressing individuality, and to share creative pursuits and passions. As we move further in life, the focus shifts to making sense of our current lives and identities. Overall, reunions provide an opportunity to connect with peers, share experiences, and gain perspective on the journey of self-discovery and personal growth.

    • Reconnecting and growing with college alumniCollege reunions offer opportunities to connect, share experiences, and grow, despite the challenges of intense academic environments and rigorous selection processes.

College reunions serve as a platform for alumni to connect, share experiences, and offer support to each other, especially as they navigate the later stages of life. This shared journey is not without its challenges, as the intense academic environments and rigorous selection processes can leave lasting impacts. However, these experiences, while sometimes painful or regrettable, also provide opportunities for growth and transformation. The bond formed during these formative years can endure, creating a unique connection among those who have weathered the storms of their educational journeys together.

    • Reflecting on past college experiencesCollege reunions provide a platform to reconnect, reflect and heal from past emotional wounds, enabling self-discovery and growth.

College reunions offer an opportunity to reflect on past experiences, particularly those involving feelings of unfairness, resentment, and regret. These emotions can stem from a lack of support or guidance from faculty and advisors during college. Unlike high school reunions, where painful experiences often come from peer relationships, college reunions allow us to reconnect with the program and cohort group that tried to support each other through developmental wounds. The internalization of these experiences during college sets the stage for a deeper introspection and processing of emotions during reunions. The goal is to move towards self-discovery and understanding, leaving behind any lingering resentment or regret.

    • Reflecting on the deeper meaning of experiencesAs we age, it's important to grapple with grief and losses, stay emotionally open, and find wisdom and growth through introspection during reunions.

The measure of a life is not determined by external factors such as wealth or achievements, but rather by an internal journey towards finding one's inner center. This was a theme that resonated strongly during a recent reunion, where older alumni reflected on the deeper meaning of their experiences and the importance of staying emotionally open and curious about each other. Jung's concept of the heroic journey, as described in his dream of killing Siegfried, was a powerful metaphor for this transition towards reorienting away from an egoic and achievement-oriented identity. As we age, it's essential to grapple with the grief and losses of life and to hold on to a philosophy that can help us stay connected as a group. The reunions may have become more introspective and ponderous with age, but they also offer an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of our experiences and to find wisdom and growth in the process.

    • Healing from trauma involves reconnecting with our innocent, whole selvesTo heal from trauma, remember who we were before and embrace our past to grow wiser and stronger

Healing from trauma involves more than just telling the stories of our suffering. It's essential to remember who we were before the trauma occurred and reconnect with that innocent, whole part of ourselves. This process can take a long time, and we may encounter many challenges and wounds along the way. But by embracing our past and finding meaning in our experiences, we can eventually emerge wiser and stronger. The myth of Persephone illustrates this journey, as she transforms from a maiden into a queen after experiencing the dark and unpredictable underworld. Ultimately, the most profound reunions are the ones we have with ourselves, allowing us to reflect on our past and grow from our experiences.

    • Embrace past experiences to discover authentic self and abilitiesTransform hardships into meaningful creations, cherish initial passions, and embrace unique talents and constraints.

Our past experiences, no matter how challenging or seemingly disappointing, hold value and can lead us to discover our authentic selves and extraordinary abilities. Using the myth of Hephaestus as an analogy, we may feel cast out or unaccepted, but we have the power to transform our circumstances and create something meaningful from our ordinary lives. We all face hardships, whether we've achieved great success or not, and it's essential to remember and cherish the moments of joy and potential that initially sparked our passions. Embracing our unique talents and constraints, we can find harmony, graciousness, and even innovation in our everyday lives.

    • Finding comfort and acceptance at school reunionsSchool reunions offer opportunities for self-acceptance, deep connections, and personal growth through curiosity, grace, and goodwill. Dream School helps individuals understand and make meaning of their dreams for similar benefits.

Attending school reunions can be a test of self-acceptance and a source of deep intimacy and camaraderie. The speaker shares her experience of feeling understood and accepted by her classmates, who have all gone through similar experiences and growth. She emphasizes the importance of curiosity, grace, and goodwill in dealing with life's challenges and the value of forging deeper connections with others. The speaker also introduces Dream School, a program designed to help individuals understand and make meaning of their dreams, which can lead to personal growth and insight. The dream shared in the episode is about a man who feels judged and out of place at a college reunion but ultimately finds comfort in the tomato he's been carrying as a talisman. The dream may symbolize the speaker's message of finding comfort and acceptance within oneself and in relationships with others.

    • Navigating new opportunities with fear and guiltThe dream highlights the dreamer's fear and guilt in the face of new experiences and opportunities, and the need to confront these emotions to move forward.

The dream reflects the dreamer's feelings of isolation, fear, and guilt as he navigates a new phase in his life. The dream's imagery of tomatoes and initiation may symbolize desirable opportunities or experiences that he feels anxious and inadequate about, fearing judgment and repercussions for pursuing them. The dream's leader, with intense eye contact, represents a mythic figure who sees through the dreamer's facade, acknowledging his true self. The dream's lack of a clear resolution suggests the dreamer's ambivalence about embracing change and taking on new challenges. The dream's structure, with its repetition of tomatoes and fear of being caught, adds to its sense of initiation and the idea of taking a bite of something new and potentially transformative.

    • Unconscious desire for recognition and initiationDream reveals longing to break free from internal rules, embrace physicality, and fulfill fundamental needs.

The dream reveals the dreamer's unconscious desire for recognition and initiation into a more adventurous and masculine version of himself. The dreamer's avoidance of contact and fear of embarrassment are symbolized by his attempt to steal tomatoes from a ceremonial leader during a game of Twister. This act represents the dreamer's longing to break free from internal rules and embrace his physicality and sensory experiences. The tomatoes also symbolize energy and abundance, highlighting the dreamer's need to fulfill his fundamental needs and assert a sense of agency. The dream can be seen as a call to embrace new opportunities and challenges, and to tap into the instinctual and wild aspects of his personality.

    • Encountering Opportunities for GrowthEmbrace situations that make you uneasy as opportunities for growth and exploration, not something to be avoided.

Our unconscious mind often presents us with symbolic situations and desires, much like the dreamer's encounter with the tomatoes in the garden. These situations can be seen as opportunities for growth and exploration, even if they involve potential discomfort or embarrassment. The dreamer's hesitation to fully engage with the abundance of life, represented by the tomatoes, is a common experience. However, it's important to remember that these situations are not inherently dangerous and can lead to great rewards. By embracing our instincts and going after the "tomatoes" in our own lives, we can tap into a source of joy and fulfillment. So next time you encounter a situation that makes you feel uneasy or hesitant, consider it an opportunity to explore and grow, rather than something to be avoided.

Psychodermatology: How Skin Communicates Unconscious Conflicts

Psychodermatology: How Skin Communicates Unconscious Conflicts

How do skin conditions give voice to silent suffering in our souls?

Our skin serves as a canvas for our emotional and psychological states, manifesting internal conflicts through visible conditions. The symbolic meaning behind skin conditions can reveal deep-seated emotional issues.  Self-inflicted lesions highlight an individual's internal turmoil, serving as a cry for help. We all understand how blushing and sweating provide outer clues about our psychological landscape. Skin, a boundary between ego and the external world, exists as a threshold organ where experiences enter us and responses are displayed. Applying Jung’s symbolic attitude to our body can lead us to hidden meanings in our skin that may release us from suffering.

Prepare to discover what your skin can reveal about your unconscious conflicts; how a symbolic interpretation of specific symptoms can lead to a meaningful dialogue with the unconscious; which therapeutic approaches can effectively decipher the language of skin symptoms; whether addressing emotional well-being can improve chronic skin issues; why some of us are more vulnerable to somatic symptoms like skin reactions…and so much more.

IDENTITY CRISIS: When Our Story Falls Apart

IDENTITY CRISIS: When Our Story Falls Apart

How can understanding and reshaping our personal narratives help us navigate and overcome identity crises during major life transitions?

A Narrative Identity Crisis occurs when the evolving story we create to make sense of our lives—integrating past experiences, present realities, and future aspirations—becomes disrupted, leading to profound disorientation and psychological distress. This crisis can be triggered by significant life changes, traumatic events, or conflicting social and cultural pressures, causing our coherent self-narrative to fragment. Memory, meaning-making, and emotional regulation are all impacted as we struggle to reconcile our self-concept with new experiences. Addressing a Narrative Identity Crisis involves reflection, support, and often therapeutic intervention to rebuild a stable, adaptive narrative that restores our sense of meaning, direction, and psychological well-being.

Prepare to discover what a personal life story is and how it integrates past experiences, present realities, and future aspirations into a coherent sense of self; how individual narratives shape our psychological well-being, influence our emotions, and guide our understanding of life events; which cognitive and emotional processes contribute to constructing and maintaining a coherent self-narrative; whether disruptions in our self-concept can lead to identity crises and the potential for growth and transformation through these crises; why engaging with and reconstructing personal narratives is crucial for emotional regulation, resilience, and overall psychological health...and so much more.

Two Red Books: The Shared Imaginal Realms of Jung and Tolkien

How can the shared imaginal realms of Jung and Tolkien empower us to navigate our personal journeys and transform our understanding of self and community?

In exploring the uncanny shared imaginal realms of Jung and Tolkien, author Becca Tarnas uncovers a profound intersection of depth psychology and mythopoeic literature, revealed in their seminal Red Books. Amid the early 20th century's upheaval, both authors undertook personal and universal journeys into the psyche, employing active imagination to engage archetypes such as the shadow, anima, and hero. Their works, brimming with symbolic meaning and mirroring profound psychological truths, beckon us to contemplate transformation, individuation, and the potency of the feminine principle within. By crafting intricate narratives and psychological insights, Jung and Tolkien charted the inner landscapes of human experience, underscoring the universal struggles and spiritual depths that bind us all. Their exploration of nature, the environment, and the darker facets of the psyche showcase the transformative power of literal and metaphorical journeys, guiding us toward enlightenment and self-realization.

Prepare to discover what the psychological and creative processes behind the works of Jung and Tolkien reveal about the universal journey of self-discovery; how to access and interpret your own imaginal realms to deepen your understanding of the personal and collective unconscious; which aspects of Jung's and Tolkien's methodologies can be applied to enhance self-awareness and artistic expression; whether the challenges and insights presented in their works have parallels in contemporary psychological practices and personal development; why the exploration of imaginal realms is crucial for personal growth and the cultivation of a richer, more connected sense of community…and so much more.

Encounters with Light: Jung's near-death experiences

Encounters with Light: Jung's near-death experiences

How can near-death experiences challenge and expand our understanding of consciousness and its connection to the transcendent?

Carl Jung's near-death experience profoundly deepened his understanding of the psyche and its connection to the universal consciousness, reinforcing his belief in life beyond physical existence. During this transformative episode, he observed Earth from a distance, encountered mystical figures, and experienced a temple-like structure within a meteoric stone, enriching his theories on the collective unconscious and archetypal imagery. This experience left an indelible mark on his professional theories and personal philosophy, intensifying his exploration of human consciousness and the continuity of life after death.

Universally consistent across cultures, Near Death Experiences (NDEs) are marked by out-of-body sensations, encounters with entities or deceased relatives, and environments filled with light, highlighting a shared psychological process at the boundary between life and death. Research efforts have effectively verified these phenomena, especially those corroborated in clinical settings, which challenge traditional views on consciousness. The transformative impacts of NDEs are profound, often leading to a diminished fear of death, increased spirituality, and a broader sense of self that integrates with universal consciousness. Open discussions enrich our understanding of NDEs within various cultural and historical contexts and provoke deeper reflections on consciousness as potentially expansive and eternal, aligning with modern and ancient perspectives on the human experience.

Prepare to discover what profound transformations can occur as one hovers between life and death; how psyche might extend beyond the physical realm, suggesting our consciousness is capable of surviving bodily limits; which elements of near-death experiences (NDEs) resonate across different cultures; whether personal transformations following NDEs typically lead to significant life changes; why NDEs captivate scientific and spiritual communities, as they offer a glimpse into the potential expanses of human consciousness and provide a narrative that can bring solace and meaning…and so much more.
