Lastly, the situation in Ukraine continues to unfold, with updates on the latest news and analysis from The Telegraph. Despite the ongoing challenges, Ukraine remains strong and determined.

    • Images of destroyed Humvees and Russian volunteer raise questions about authenticityConflicting reports and potential propaganda from both Ukraine and Russia create uncertainty at the border, with staged images and individuals with questionable pasts fueling the information war

The situation at the Ukraine-Russia border remains unclear with conflicting reports and potential propaganda from both sides. One image of allegedly destroyed Humvees has raised suspicion due to its staged appearance. Another image showed a Russian man, Alexander Shashkov, who was previously arrested for selling translated versions of the Christchurch shooter's manifesto, now appearing as a Russian volunteer. However, the authenticity of his presence in the conflict zone is questionable. The images of potentially staged Humvees may not matter much beyond the individual's past, as the propaganda of the deed can have a more immediate impact on public opinion. The incident is part of the ongoing shaping operations between Ukraine and Russia, with each side trying to gain the upper hand in the information war. The situation is embarrassing for Russia, but it is unlikely to deter future attempts at border incursions.

    • Tension at the Belarus-Ukraine border with reports of combat and potential for escalationRussian troops and alleged Ukrainian partisans are clashing at the Belarus-Ukraine border, with civilians urged to evacuate due to ongoing shelling. The situation is unclear, but the potential for escalation remains high.

The situation at the border between Belarus and Ukraine remains tense, with reports of Russian troops and alleged Ukrainian partisans engaging in combat. While the Ukrainian officials maintain that no Ukrainian soldiers were involved, locals and border guards interviewed by a journalist in the area expressed hope that the conflict could lead to an uprising against Russian President Vladimir Putin. The fog of war makes it difficult to determine the full truth, but the potential for escalation remains high. Meanwhile, civilians are being urged to evacuate areas near the border due to ongoing shelling.

    • Russian forces escalate artillery attacks in Ukraine to divert resourcesUkrainian officials believe Russian artillery attacks are a tactic to prevent counter offensives, while civilians support military actions against Russia, viewing it as a long-awaited response to their suffering.

There is an escalation of artillery and shelling activity from Russian forces into Ukraine, which appears to be a deliberate tactic to divert the attention and resources of Ukraine's armed forces. Ukrainian officials believe this is an attempt to prevent Ukraine from launching a counter offensive. Additionally, there have been reports of a US intelligence document suggesting that Ukraine had armed a group of Russian soldiers with NATO standard weapons, but the authenticity of this document is uncertain. The civilians in the area where the speaker is located are supportive of the military actions against Russia, viewing it as a long-awaited response to their suffering over the past 15 months. The Ukrainian officials and civilians see this conflict as a war between Ukraine and Russia, not NATO and Russia, and they are determined to defend their territory.

    • Unpaid volunteers guarding Ukraine's infrastructureOrdinary people, including a volunteer named Vitali and his unit of a computer programmer, local politician, and tractor driver, are unpaid yet crucial in protecting Ukraine's infrastructure from Russian attacks.

The war in Ukraine has put ordinary people in unprecedented situations, with some taking up crucial roles to protect their communities and infrastructure. A volunteer named Vitali, whose brother is fighting at the front lines, is one such individual. He and his unit, which includes a computer programmer, a local politician, and a tractor driver, are now part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They are unpaid and guard critical infrastructure, including electricity substations, as Russian attacks continue. Vitali shared his story of shooting down an Iranian drone over Kyiv, highlighting the bravery and importance of these unsung heroes. Despite the challenges and personal sacrifices, they remain dedicated to their duty.

    • Ukraine's Resilience: Volatile Situation and Determined FightingUkrainian volunteers guard air defense systems, resistance determined to keep fighting despite intense shelling. International community closely monitoring Ukraine's actions, US denies encouraging strikes inside Russia. Symbol of resilience: a son playing with a toy plane on a tower block.

The situation in Ukraine remains volatile, with ongoing fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces despite claims that the backline has fallen. Ukrainian volunteers are taking part in guarding air defense systems when operators are away, and the resistance is determined to keep fighting. The international community, particularly the West, is closely watching Ukraine's actions to maintain ethical superiority in the conflict, with the US denying any encouragement or enabling of strikes inside Russia. The symbol of resilience in Ukraine is a mural of a son playing with a toy plane on a housing estate tower block, which Ukrainian troops continue to defend despite constant shelling. The fighting is intense and back-and-forth, with both sides determined to hold their ground.

    • Ukraine conflict complications and China-Russia tensionsRussian factions' neo-Nazi beliefs fuel Russian propaganda, Ukraine coup comes with risks, China's envoy visits Russia amid Finland-NATO tensions, Ukrainian port halted, new Russian sanctions list

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine between Russian factions and Ukrainian forces has complicated implications, with some Russian factions reportedly holding neo-Nazi beliefs, potentially validating Russian propaganda narratives. This incident, while a coup for pro-Ukrainian elements, also comes with risks and could strain relations between various countries. In other news, China's special envoy is visiting Russia, adding to tensions between Russia and Finland, which recently joined NATO. The Ukrainian port of Pivdenny has halted operations, potentially impacting the safe Black Sea grain exports, and Russia has released a new sanctions list, including several enemies of former U.S. President Donald Trump. These developments underscore the complex and evolving geopolitical landscape.

    • Russian Sanctions on American Officials and Support for Trump's ClaimsRussia imposes sanctions on US officials for pursuing legal actions against Trump and expresses support for his claims to end Ukraine war. Ukrainian training shifts focus with war's fluidity; recent Russian incursion met with positive reaction in Kharkiv.

The Russian government has been imposing sanctions on American officials, including Georgia's Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and New York's Attorney General Letitia James, in response to their roles in pursuing legal actions against former President Trump and his businesses. Moscow has also expressed support for Trump's claims that he is capable of ending the ongoing war in Ukraine quickly if reelected. Meanwhile, in Ukraine, Daniel Ridley, founder of the country's largest training center for soldiers, medics, and drone pilots, shared that the focus of their training has been shifting with the fluidity of the war. The recent Russian incursion into Belgorod has been met with a positive reaction in Kharkiv region, where civilians have been under constant attack from Russian forces.

    • Ukraine's Drone Attack in Belgrade: A Positive Outcome for Civilians? The recent drone attack in Belgrade, involving Ukrainian forces, exposed Russia's vulnerabilities and highlighted the increasing importance of drone use in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

The recent operation in Belgrade, allegedly involving Ukrainian forces, has been seen as a positive outcome for civilians in Ukraine, despite mixed reactions from soldiers and the Russian military. This attack, which involved drones, vehicles, and a large infantry, exposed a significant gap in Russia's ability to prevent cross-border attacks. The use of drones in the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia has become increasingly common and important for both sides, with civilian drones now being widely used. The training for drone use has evolved to include both defensive and offensive strategies. The similarity between Russia's invasion of Ukraine from Belarus and the recent alleged attack from Ukrainian forces highlights the complexities and potential dangers of the ongoing conflict.

    • FPV drones revolutionize warfare in UkraineFPV drones, easy to manufacture, hard to intercept, and capable of carrying weapons, have transformed warfare in Ukraine, giving soldiers a first-person perspective for targeting vehicles, positions, and even people.

The use of FPV (First Person View) drones in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has significantly changed the tactics of warfare. These drones, which are easy to manufacture, difficult to intercept, and can be used to attach weapons, have given soldiers on the ground the ability to take out vehicles, positions, and even human beings from a first-person perspective. The Ukrainian army has seen great success with FPV drones, especially on their flanks, and their use is expected to continue and potentially dominate over DGI drones. The Ukrainian military has made strides in training soldiers to use FPV drones effectively, and there is a plan to open a FPV drone academy to continue this training. The effectiveness of FPV drones has increased as the Ukrainian army has become better equipped and better trained, with many soldiers having received training from foreign partners. However, the lack of combat experience for some of these units could be a challenge in the upcoming counter offensive. China, as the main producer of DGI drones, could impact their viability in the conflict in the coming months.

    • Ukraine's Capabilities and Western SupportDespite Russia's gains, Ukraine's improved readiness and western support make its military less expendable. Loss of Russian drones is significant but manageable as Ukraine receives more and learns to use terrain effectively.

The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia involves complex dynamics, with both sides experiencing victories and setbacks. While Russia has made significant gains in recent months, such as in the Battle of Bakhmut, it's crucial not to underestimate Ukraine's capabilities. The Ukrainian forces are now better prepared than ever, with increasing western support and resources. The loss of Russian drones, estimated at 10,000 a month, might seem high, but their value in the context of the war is not as significant as it once was. The Ukrainian military is receiving more drones, and expert training can help pilots use the terrain for cover, making their drone army less expendable. However, the outcome of the war remains uncertain, and the next Ukrainian counteroffensive may not replicate the same level of success as the last one. The key is to continue supporting Ukraine in its efforts to secure its sovereign state.

    • Investing in drone training and community support in UkraineDespite the significant loss of drones in Ukraine, their low cost and increased use due to training and community support make them valuable reconnaissance tools, with handheld drone guns used to counteract Russian electronic warfare efforts.

Investing in drone training and community support is crucial in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The use of drones has shifted from a primarily offensive role to a reconnaissance one due to better training and the loss of expensive drones. The figure of 10,000 drones lost per month is significant, but the drones are now considered disposable due to their relatively low cost compared to traditional munitions. Russian electronic warfare efforts are a concern, but the majority of small drones are being taken down by handheld drone guns, which are often used by volunteers rather than the military. The Ukrainian volunteer system and population support for the military have resulted in a higher number of drones in use, making the loss to EW relatively smaller compared to the overall number of drones in operation.

    • Ukrainian Forces Advance in Drone Technology, Russian Military Lags BehindUkrainian forces are using advanced drone technology, while Russian military is lagging behind. Ukrainian experts are building and hacking their own systems, and concerns about data being sent back to China limit the use of DJI drones. The next challenge is integrating drones with other military arms for effective combat identification and coordination.

While Ukrainian forces are developing and utilizing advanced drone technology, Russia is lagging behind. Ukrainian drone experts are often former IT professionals, and they're building and hacking their own systems. Russian military electronic warfare (EW) isn't a significant concern, as evidenced by continuous drone attacks on Russian infrastructure. Regarding Chinese drones like DJI, there are concerns about data being sent back to China, and Ukraine is trying to move away from these systems. However, DJI drones are easily accessible, cost-effective, and widely used due to their ease of use and affordability. The next challenge is integrating drone use with other military arms for effective combat identification and coordination. For instance, drones could call in artillery or mortars, or units could establish blocks around certain areas based on drone flights. However, it's unclear how well this level of training and integration is happening yet.

    • Miscommunication and Dangers in Military Drones OperationsEffective communication is vital for military drone operations, and lack of support for training and equipping soldiers at the lowest level can lead to dangerous situations.

Effective communication is crucial for integrating drones into military operations at a higher level, but it's a challenge that the military is working to address. Daniel shared a personal experience where miscommunication led to a dangerous situation, highlighting the importance of clear communication between different military units. Additionally, Daniel mentioned that there's a lack of support for training and equipping soldiers at the lowest level, despite the increasing supply of high-level weapons from the West. He emphasized that the soldiers on the ground are the most important part of the conflict, and providing them with adequate training and resources is essential for making a significant impact on the battlefield.

    • Impact of the ongoing conflict on Ukrainian civiliansThe conflict in Ukraine continues to impact civilians with regular shelling and foreign forces, making it difficult to discern truth from propaganda, but UK support is deeply appreciated.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues to impact civilians, with regular shelling and the presence of foreign forces leading to a sense of complacency and war weariness. The use of western weapons by both sides in the conflict can make it difficult to discern the truth behind allegations of staged attacks or propaganda. Despite this, the support of countries like the UK, represented by figures like Boris Johnson, remains deeply appreciated by the Ukrainian people. The importance of fact-checking information and maintaining a critical perspective cannot be overstated.

    • Russian research vessel attacked in Black Sea, UK Defense Secretary meets with Ukraine's defense ministerTensions escalate in Ukraine as strikes against Russian targets continue and a Russian research vessel is attacked in the Black Sea. UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace discusses potential assistance, including the possibility of a NATO-Ukraine Council, during a meeting with Ukraine's defense minister.

The situation in Ukraine remains complex and volatile, with various strikes against Russian targets continuing to escalate tensions. A Russian research vessel was recently attacked in the Black Sea, adding to the confusion and uncertainty. Meanwhile, UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace met with Ukraine's defense minister in Kyiv to discuss potential assistance, including the possibility of a NATO-Ukraine Council. The history of Belgorod, a city currently in the news due to military activity, serves as a reminder of the intricate and nuanced nature of the region's history and the ongoing geopolitical struggles. Soft War: The Ethics on Unarmed Conflict

Soft War: The Ethics on Unarmed Conflict
Soft war tactics, including cyber-warfare and economic sanctions, propaganda and non-violent resistance are of increasing importance but largely unexplored in just war theory. This talk illuminates this neglected aspect of international conflict. Just war theory focuses primarily on bodily harm, such as killing, maiming, and torture, while other harms are often largely overlooked. At the same time, contemporary international conflicts increasingly involve the use of unarmed tactics, employing 'softer' alternatives or supplements to kinetic power that have not been sufficiently addressed by the ethics of war or international law. Soft war tactics include cyber-warfare and economic sanctions, media warfare, and propaganda, as well as non-violent resistance as it plays out in civil disobedience, boycotts, and 'lawfare.' While the just war tradition has much to say about 'hard' war - bullets, bombs, and bayonets - it is virtually silent on the subject of 'soft' war. This talk illuminates this neglected aspect of international conflict. Michael L. Gross is Professor of Political Science and Head of the School of Political Science at the University of Haifa, Israel. He has published widely in medical ethics, military ethics military medical ethics and related questions of medicine and national security.
