    • A meticulous creator's firsthand approach brings intricate characters and backstories to lifeThe creator's thorough process results in complex characters and unique quirks in a horror-based tabletop RPG set in 1950s Nebraska

The creator of this production is meticulous and dedicated to her craft. She insists on having firsthand experience before writing anything down. This thorough approach contributes to the intricacy of the characters and their backstories. For instance, Anthony Birch, played by Will, is a bully turned teacher, and Trudy Trout, portrayed by Beth May, is a perfect homemaker. These characters have unique quirks, such as Anthony's fear of saliva and Trudy's pancake-making prowess. The game they are playing, Call of Cthulhu, is a horror-based tabletop role-playing game with a unique dice system, where a lower roll indicates a higher chance of success. The year is 1950xx in the fictional town of Peachyville, Nebraska, where the intriguing stories unfold.

    • In Peachyville, appearances can be deceiving as ancient evils lie beneath the surfaceThrough teamwork, friendship, and determination, individuals can overcome personal struggles and prove themselves to their community

In the seemingly idyllic community of Peachyville, appearances can be deceiving. Beneath the surface of picket fences and green lawns, ancient evils lie dormant, ready to be awakened. For Francis Farnsworth, the pressure to win the bowling trophy and earn the respect of his peers, including the girl he has a crush on, reaches a climax during the final frame of the Bowlerama Bowling Bowl. With the support of his teammates, Francis attempts to make the crucial final roll, but the weight of his past failures looms heavy. Through a creative role-playing exercise, the team uses a ten-sided die and skill checks to inspire and motivate Francis, offering him a chance to overcome his insecurities and prove himself to the town. This unexpected turn of events highlights the power of community, friendship, and determination to overcome personal struggles.

    • Dice rolls determine success, motivation and inspiration in Call of CthulhuLow rolls can lead to failure and demotivation, while high rolls inspire and motivate. The game's unpredictability adds excitement to the story.

In the game of Call of Cthulhu, the roll of the dice can determine not only the success or failure of an action, but also the inspiration and motivation of the characters. In the discussion, we saw how Anthony's low roll in psychology led to a disastrous outcome, while a successful roll in persuasion resulted in a turning point. The character Britannica Blue Girl Detective, with her high roll in history, inspired Francis with a quote from John Stuart Mill, giving him the motivation to finally succeed in his task. The game also showcased the importance of having something to fight for, as Francis was inspired by his desire to prove himself to Carly. The session ended with an unexpected and impressive throw from Francis, resulting in a strike, despite his earlier failures. The game's mechanics of rolling dice for skills and actions added an element of unpredictability and excitement to the story.

    • Frasier suspects Buddy of cheating during a bowling competition, but Phoebe reveals a surprising connection between them.Frasier's suspicion leads to misunderstandings and lost 'sanity' points in a bowling game, highlighting the importance of trust and communication in relationships.

During a bowling competition, Kelsey Grammer's character, Frasier Crane, becomes increasingly suspicious of his rival, Buddy Betts, who is seen attempting to sabotage the game with a mysterious gadget. However, Phoebe, Frasier's colleague, reveals that Buddy is an old student of Frasier's and invokes teacher privilege to diffuse the situation. Despite Phoebe's words, Frasier remains suspicious and suspects that someone is lying to him. The game's rules include a secondary set of hit points called "sanity," which are lost when the character experiences traumatic events or encounters deceit. Phoebe loses sanity points after Frasier expresses his disappointment in her, and Frasier becomes increasingly paranoid, suspecting his husband and even his colleague, Matt, of lying to him. The game's owner, Milton Friedman, presents Frasier with a trophy as a reward for winning the competition. Overall, the scene highlights the themes of suspicion, deceit, and the complex dynamics of relationships.

    • An unexpected discovery and a contaminated handkerchief disrupt the group's victory celebrationDuring an unexpected event, the group discovered a contaminated item and had to prioritize health concerns over their victory celebration

The group found themselves in an unexpected situation when Francis passed out during a bowling match. Carly and Trudy tried to revive him, but in the process, they discovered that Tucker had been using Carly's handkerchief, which was now contaminated with bacteria. While dealing with this issue, they were also presented with a trophy, which turned out to be a heavy and cold "loving cup" rather than a block of cheese as they had assumed. As they held the cup, they experienced a strange reflection of themselves and felt a sense of power and intrigue. Despite the unexpected twists, they all found joy in their unexpected victory. However, the group's focus was disrupted when they realized the potential health risks of the contaminated handkerchief, leading them to prioritize tending to Francis's injury.

    • Avoiding violence against childrenAdults should set a good example by resolving conflicts peacefully and respectfully, especially around children.

Despite the challenges and conflicts that arise, it's important to remain composed and avoid resorting to violence, especially against children. In the discussed scenario, the group of adults, despite their frustrations and anger, were faced with a situation involving a group of children. Instead of resorting to physical violence, they could have handled the situation differently, such as communicating effectively or seeking help from authorities. The incident serves as a reminder that adults have a responsibility to set a good example for the younger generation and to resolve conflicts in a peaceful and respectful manner. Additionally, the scenario highlights the importance of not making assumptions based on stereotypes or appearances, as it can lead to misunderstandings and unnecessary conflicts.

    • Britannica saves Farnsworth's match by exposing a cheating schemeBritannica uncovered a cheating scheme at the bowling alley, saving Farnsworth's match. Kids demanded a trophy but received cigarettes instead, highlighting their addiction over rewards.

Britannica Blue, the detective, uncovered a cheating scheme at the bowling alley and saved the match for Farnsworth by removing an electromagnetic cable. The kids, led by Molly, demanded the trophy as compensation for their lost bet, but Britannica gave them cigarettes instead. The kids were more concerned about their nicotine fix than the trophy, and they left with the cigarettes. Britannica then offered rental cars as a new business idea. Meanwhile, at Kelsey Grammer's house, she was seen watching TV and boxing against a speed bag during martini hour. The scene showcased the daily routines of various characters in Peachyville as the sun set and the establishments closed for the night.

    • Milton's unexpected visit brings a threatening messageToni Collette's brother's son visits with a warning, creating unease and tension in her life while she focuses on boxing and new projects, living in an RV in the dealership lot.

Milton, Toni Collette's brother's oldest son, pays an unexpected visit to Toni with a pie and a threatening message from an unknown man. Milton, a peculiar young man, brings a sense of unease as he leaves a business card and warns Toni not to tell anyone about the encounter. Meanwhile, Toni is focused on her boxing training and developing a new project. The living quarters of Toni Collette are in the back parking lot of her used car dealership, where she resides in a rundown RV. In the scene, Toni's brother is seen outside, aiming a pistol at beer cans while intoxicated. Despite his poor aim and the gun jamming, he continues to take shots, creating a tense atmosphere.

    • Neighbors' Conflicting Views on Safety and RulesNeighbors Tyrus and Tony have opposing perspectives on safety and neighborhood rules, leading to tension and potential violence. Effective communication and understanding can help resolve conflicts.

Neighbors Tyrus Luo and Tony Klut have conflicting views on safety and neighborhood rules. Tyrus, the Chinese restaurant owner, feels threatened by Tony's gunshots and believes he needs to protect himself and his property. Meanwhile, Tony sees sending teenagers to the parking lot for discreet activities as a mutual agreement. The tension between them escalates, with each threatening the other with violence and past military records. On the other hand, at the Trout household, Trudy prepares a meal for her family, but they must wait for Tucker to come home. Tucker, an inventor, is late due to work in the basement. When he arrives, the family shares news of their achievements, but a sudden loud bang and footsteps from the basement hint at a potential conflict. Overall, the text highlights the complex dynamics of neighborly relationships and the importance of communication and understanding.

    • Friends band together to help and stay safe during a kidnapping situationTrudy and Kelsey seek assistance from their bowling club friends to help retrieve a kidnapped trophy, while considering safety measures and potential consequences.

The situation at hand seems to involve danger, kidnapping, and potential harm to Britannica Blue. Trudy and Tucker are trying to figure out how to help and stay safe, with Trudy reaching out to her friend Kelsey for assistance. Meanwhile, Trudy is unsure if her husband Tucker knows about the situation or not, and there are threats of consequences if they involve the authorities. The group appears to be in possession of a trophy that the kidnapper has demanded be brought to a specific location at midnight. Trudy and Kelsey are considering involving their bowling club friends to help retrieve the trophy, but there are concerns about using a gun and Trudy's husband's potential involvement. The dialogue also touches on the use of children's vitamins and Trudy's past experiences with gummy bears.

    • Sneaking out in the middle of the night brings unexpected challengesSneaking out can be complicated and chaotic, with unexpected obstacles like encounters with unknown presences, uncooperative parents, and clumsiness.

The situation escalates quickly for Francis and Kelsey as they both attempt to sneak out of their houses in the middle of the night. Francis, after an unnerving encounter with an unknown presence, grabs a baseball bat to defend himself. Meanwhile, Kelsey makes a hasty escape next door, unintentionally alerting her mother. As they both race towards the Farnsworth house, they must navigate unexpected obstacles, including uncooperative parents and their own clumsiness. Despite their best efforts, they manage to reunite and continue their plan, but not before encountering some unexpected challenges along the way. It's a reminder that even the simplest tasks can become complicated and chaotic when executed in secret.

    • The Unexpected and Unknown Lead to ChaosCommunication and teamwork are crucial in dealing with crises. The unexpected and unknown can lead to dangerous consequences, so staying alert and prepared is essential.

The unexpected and the unknown can lead to chaos and danger. This is exemplified in the story as the group investigates strange occurrences at a friend's house, leading to various powers being unleashed and unexpected consequences. The use of vivid language and imagery adds to the sense of unease and uncertainty. Another important point is the importance of communication and teamwork in dealing with crises. The characters' individual actions, both successful and unsuccessful, demonstrate the impact of cooperation and miscommunication. For instance, Toni Collette's character, Ford Edsall Villager, could have caused a tragic accident by not paying attention to his surroundings while driving. Overall, the story highlights the importance of being prepared for the unexpected and working together to overcome challenges.

    • Quick thinking and strength save the day, but an unexpected car issue causes chaosDuring chaotic situations, quick thinking, physical strength, and adaptability are crucial to protect those around us and navigate the unexpected.

During a chaotic scene, Trudy's quick thinking and strength saved the day, but an unexpected issue with the car's transmission led to a bizarre and unintended consequence. The car in question was an Edsel, an old model with a unique transmission system. When the driver, Ed, pressed the wrong button, the car careened out of control, causing a house crash. Despite the confusion and danger, Trudy managed to protect those around her and adapt to the unexpected situation. Another detail that emerged was the car's ability to climb stairs, which added to the surreal nature of the event. Ultimately, the scene showcased the importance of quick thinking, physical strength, and adaptability in the face of the unexpected.

    • Ford Edsel's TeleTouch Steering Wheel: A Dangerous InnovationThe Ford Edsel's TeleTouch steering wheel, with all controls on it, led to numerous accidents due to inadvertent gear shifting, causing damage and potential harm to occupants. American engineering during this era lacked reliability and safety compared to other countries.

The TeleTouch automatic steering wheel in Ford Edsel cars, introduced in the 1950s, was a disastrous innovation that led to numerous accidents due to its design flaw. By placing all the controls on the steering wheel, drivers could inadvertently shift gears while attempting to use other functions, leading to loss of control and crashes. This resulted in significant damage to the cars and potential harm to the occupants, who were not required to wear seat belts at the time. The discussion also highlighted the consequences of such an accident, including injury and even death, and the importance of being prepared for unexpected situations. The conversation also touched upon the idea that American engineering during this era was not as reliable or safe as it could have been, contrasted with the more robust and effective designs of other countries.

Why Students Need Computational Thinking Skills with Damiano Mastandrea and Tracey Sigers

Why Students Need Computational Thinking Skills with Damiano Mastandrea and Tracey Sigers

As part of our IT Specialist Academy training, we held a webinar addressing computational thinking. This one was so good, that we just had to share it here as well. We were lucky enough to feature two of our new CERTIFIED Ambassadors on this episode: Tracey Sigers and Damiano Mastandrea.

Tracey Sigers is the Department Chair of Information Technology at the National Center for Urban Solutions in Columbus, Ohio. Tracey holds an MBA with an emphasis in technology leadership, a bachelor’s degree in information technology, and an associate degree in technology. Tracey has twenty years of business background in computer systems management, college study skills, and Microsoft software experience. She’s eager to bring students into the twenty-first century using enthusiastic and dynamic teaching to help them become lifelong learners.

Damiano Mastrandrea is a Career and Technical Education Director at the Brooklyn STEAM Center. He manages the CTE portfolio of the school to ensure that they are highly relevant and rigorous. He also strategizes various career readiness approaches through workplace immersion programs supported by data-driven decisions. Damiano is a big believer in changing education as a system that works for everyone instead of the selected few and pursuing education to all corners. His passion for education has led him to earn three college degrees including a doctorate, as well last 26 industry certifications.  When he has a free moment, Damiano likes to write short stories, play games, and, if he's feeling daring, bake!

We sat down with Tracey and Damiano to learn more about computational thinking. According to ComputationalThinking.org, these skills are increasingly critical for individuals and organizations as the use of computation becomes more central to every activity and every innovation. In this episode, we took a deep dive into computational thinking. Our guests taught us more about what it is, why it’s valuable for students, and how you can teach this industry-demanded skillset in the classroom.
