    Podcast Summary

    • People achieving great things despite personal challengesJohnny Knoxville and Elna Baker share stories of pushing boundaries and defying expectations on 'Pretty Sure I Can Fly'

The new smartless media show, "Pretty Sure I Can Fly," features guests Johnny Knoxville and Elna Baker, who have defied expectations and naysayers throughout their careers. Knoxville, known for his daring stunts, and Baker, who left her Mormon religion at a young age, embody the show's theme of people achieving great things despite personal challenges. The hosts discussed their experiences of pushing boundaries, with Knoxville sharing stories of his extreme antics and Baker talking about leaving her religion and experiencing new experiences for the first time. The show promises to entertain and inspire audiences with tales of people who have done things that have never been done before.

    • Childhood experiences shaping individuals' perspectives and actionsRepressed upbringings and challenging childhood experiences can inspire individuals to take risks and achieve great things in their lives

Repressed upbringings and challenging childhood experiences can inspire individuals to take risks and achieve great things in their lives. The discussion touched upon various backgrounds, including Catholicism and Southern Baptist upbringings, and how the intensity of these experiences shaped the individuals' perspectives and actions later on. This theme was also seen in the examples of athletes and their primal wounds, as well as personal stories of individuals who had faced significant adversity. Ultimately, these experiences can serve as the driving force for individuals to overcome challenges and pursue their passions.

    • Brave Individuals with Fearless DeterminationDespite the risks, individuals with fearless determination often put themselves in dangerous situations, leading to incredible stories and sometimes self-destructive behavior.

The individuals featured in the show are incredibly brave and determined, often putting themselves in dangerous situations, whether it be through addiction or extreme sports. Some do so out of a desire for adrenaline and the thrill of the unknown, while others are driven by a desire to accomplish great things. This fearlessness, however, can also lead to self-destructive behavior and even injury. For example, Johnny, a guest on the show, suffered a traumatic brain injury while pursuing his passion for extreme sports. The common thread among these individuals is their unwavering determination and the fascinating stories that result from their actions. It's important to note that while their actions may be admirable, they also come with risks and consequences. Additionally, some stories, such as that of Ty Stokes, the Jamaican founding member of the Jamaican Bobsled team, are much more complex and interesting than the fictionalized versions portrayed in movies like "Cool Runnings."

    • Determination and last-minute decisions can lead to great successTaking risks and being determined to achieve goals, even when uncertain, can lead to great rewards.

Determination and a last-minute decision can lead to great success, even when the odds seem stacked against you. The story of Travis Pastrana's double backflip in bobsledding at the Olympics is a perfect example of this. The team didn't have adequate training time or resources, but Pastrana's passion and commitment to trying the trick led him to make a bold decision. He was on the fence about attempting the double backflip, as he was sitting in third place and had the opportunity to still receive a medal and financial gain by not attempting it. However, the potential reward of landing the trick and expanding his career in action sports ultimately outweighed the risk. With the help of a friend, Pastrana made the decision to go for it, and the rest is history. The moment he landed the trick live on TV was not only a triumph for him but also for the team and the world, as it left a lasting impression on many. This story serves as a reminder that sometimes taking a risk and being determined to achieve your goals, even when faced with uncertainty, can lead to great rewards.

    • Performing a dangerous stunt at Staples CenterDespite unconventional setup and challenging conditions, the speaker executed a dangerous stunt flawlessly, showcasing his determination and passion for his sport.

The speaker's experience of performing a dangerous stunt in front of a live audience at Staples Center was a surreal and unforgettable moment. Before going up, he and his team raised the ramp in an unconventional way, making it a high-risk situation. As he dropped in, everything seemed to slow down, and he couldn't check his landing due to the blinding lights and dark below. Despite the challenges, he executed the trick flawlessly and was greeted with a hug from a random fan in the crowd. The entire experience was a testament to his determination and passion for his sport.

    • A profound impact of a small, memorable momentExperiencing a small, seemingly insignificant moment can have a deep impact on us. Travis Pastrana's double back flip in a building search for the Holy Grail is an example of such a moment.

Experiencing a memorable and awe-inspiring moment, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant in the grand scheme of things, can have a profound impact on us. For Travis Pastrana, it was performing a double back flip in a building search for the Holy Grail, an event that left him and many others in tears. This moment, though perhaps not the biggest in his career, was one that resonated deeply and was felt by the world. The Tetris Company: Henk Rogers

    The Tetris Company: Henk Rogers

Tetris is one of the most popular video games of all time, and Henk Rogers helped make it happen. He first discovered the game at a convention in 1988, and immediately saw how elegant and addictive it was. As a software developer based in Japan, Henk set out to obtain selected publishing rights, but waded into a tangle of red tape that stretched from Japan to the U.S. to the Soviet Union. He eventually ventured behind the Iron Curtain to bluster his way into the obscure government office that managed Tetris. While in Moscow, Henk also met the game’s inventor, Alexey Pajitnov, and the two of them hit it off. After much legal wrangling across many time zones, Henk and Alexey won the worldwide rights to the game; and today, Tetris has sold over 500 million copies.
