Stay Young Special – with Prof Andrew Steptoe

    enJanuary 02, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • The Importance of Finding Purpose in Life for Aging WellFinding a sense of purpose in life through work, relationships, hobbies, or any meaningful activity can significantly improve mental and emotional well-being, contributing to overall health and longevity.

Key takeaway from this podcast episode is the importance of finding purpose in life as a key factor in staying young, according to Professor Andrew Steptoe from University College London. The English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, which Professor Steptoe leads, is a population study that monitors people aged 50 and older in England, focusing not only on health but also on well-being, social relationships, and economics. Professor Steptoe emphasized the significance of linking these different areas to gain a more holistic view of aging. Regarding his personal health hack for staying young, he suggested that finding a sense of purpose in life is crucial. This could be through work, relationships, hobbies, or any activity that brings meaning and fulfillment. By focusing on purpose, individuals can improve their mental and emotional well-being, which can contribute to overall health and longevity.

    • Finding Meaning and Purpose in Life for Better AgingEngaging in worthwhile activities brings better social relationships, lower risk of physical health problems, less chronic pain, less disability, and less depression. Find activities that bring fulfillment and value, whether it's volunteering, caring for loved ones, mastering a skill, or pursuing a passion.

Maintaining a sense of meaning and purpose in life contributes significantly to well-being and healthy aging. This can come from various activities, both selfless and individual pursuits. Research from the English Longitudinal Study of Aging shows that people who feel they're doing worthwhile things have better social relationships, lower risk of physical health problems, less chronic pain, less disability, and less depression. The mechanism behind this link is not yet fully understood but may involve better social connections and reduced stress. Therefore, it's essential to find activities that bring a sense of fulfillment and value, whether it's volunteering, caring for loved ones, mastering a skill, or pursuing a passion. This not only enhances personal well-being but also benefits the wider community.

    • Maintaining Purpose and Social Connections for Healthy AgingHaving a sense of purpose and strong social relationships promote healthy aging by improving physical and mental health, slowing the epigenetic clock, and reducing stress activation.

Having a sense of purpose in life and maintaining strong social relationships are key factors for promoting healthy aging. The first tip emphasizes the importance of having a sense of purpose, which is linked to better physical and mental health, as well as a slower epigenetic clock, suggesting a longer and healthier life. The second tip highlights the significance of social relationships in promoting health and well-being, as social isolation and loneliness have been linked to various health issues and even earlier mortality. The underlying biological explanation is related to stress activation, which can lead to increased stress hormones, changes in blood pressure, and inflammation. It's crucial to have a support system beyond just one close relationship, as the loss of that relationship can have a profound impact on one's well-being.

    • Maintaining Social Relationships for Healthy AgingInvesting time and effort in relationships, even when not necessary, can lead to better health outcomes and reduce risk of chronic diseases, dementia, and frailty. Having a broader social network is important for overall well-being, especially for those experiencing loss or feeling lonely.

Maintaining social relationships is crucial for healthy aging. As people age, they may lose connections due to various reasons, leading to social isolation and loneliness. However, investing time and effort in relationships, even when it's not necessary at that moment, can be beneficial in the long run. The evidence from numerous observational studies shows that socially isolated individuals are at a higher risk of death, chronic diseases, dementia, and frailty. Men tend to have fewer but stronger relationships, while women have more diverse social networks. It's important to have a broader social network for better health outcomes. For those who are feeling lonely due to the loss of loved ones or children leaving home, there is hope. Engaging in new social activities, volunteering, and trying to adapt can help build new relationships and improve overall well-being. The importance of social connections for healthy aging is increasingly recognized by various organizations around the world.

    • Strong social connections and adequate sleep promote longer, healthier livesImproving sleep hygiene and nurturing relationships can reduce risk of age-related health issues and enhance overall well-being, with strong social connections linked to reduced risk of chronic diseases and better cognitive function, while inadequate sleep linked to cognitive decline and elevated inflammatory markers.

Maintaining a healthy social network and getting adequate sleep are crucial for promoting longer and healthier lives. Professor Andrew Steptoe's research indicates that individuals with strong social connections have a reduced risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease and inflammation, as well as better cognitive function. Furthermore, sleep plays a significant role in brain health as people age, with inadequate sleep linked to cognitive decline and elevated inflammatory markers. By focusing on improving sleep hygiene and nurturing relationships, individuals can potentially reduce their risk of age-related health issues and enhance their overall well-being.

    • Factors Affecting Aging: Sleep, Happiness, and Telomere LengthStrive for 6-8 hours of quality sleep, maintain happiness despite work and family pressures, and focus on good habits for healthy aging from your thirties onwards.

Telomere length, while not a perfect measure of biological aging, is linked to healthier aging in broader population terms. Aim for 6-8 hours of reasonable quality sleep per night, as inadequate sleep, which includes both duration and quality, can negatively impact health and contribute to inflammaging. Happiness levels tend to decline in one's twenties due to work demands and then again in late forties to early fifties when dealing with family responsibilities. The peak levels of happiness are argued to be in one's early seventies or late sixties, but this can vary greatly among individuals and social circumstances. Aging well is an integration of various factors, including outlook, lifestyle, social relationships, and health, which should be considered starting in one's thirties. Building good habits, such as looking after social relationships and getting good sleep, during this time can significantly impact healthy aging.

    • Embracing a positive mindset towards agingChallenge negative stereotypes, focus on long-term goals, and embrace a 'grow old disgracefully' attitude for a healthier, more fulfilling later life.

It's important to consider our long-term goals and purpose in life, even during periods when we may be heavily focused on our families or other immediate concerns. Additionally, challenging negative stereotypes about aging and embracing a mindset that feels and acts younger than our actual age can positively impact our well-being and overall health as we age. Society's views on aging can influence our own perceptions and experiences, so it's essential to be aware of this and strive to defy these stereotypes. Furthermore, advances in health and medicine mean that aging should be a healthier and more productive time than in the past, so embracing a "grow old disgracefully" mindset can lead to a more fulfilling and vibrant later life.

    • Defying Social Stereotypes and Embracing Active AgingEmbrace an active lifestyle to maintain vitality and well-being in older age, challenge societal expectations, and address mindset to promote continued self-care

Defying social stereotypes and embracing an active, healthy lifestyle in older age is crucial for maintaining a sense of vitality and well-being. The interviewee shares his personal experience of continuing to windsurf and staying physically active in his older years, contrasting it with his parents' generation. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining strength, flexibility, and cardio respiratory fitness, as well as challenging societal expectations of aging. The interviewee also acknowledges the influence of personal perception and the importance of engaging in cultural activities as ways to feel younger and more engaged with life. Additionally, he highlights the need to address the mindset of those who may give up on maintaining their health as they age, encouraging efforts to change this attitude and promote the importance of continued self-care and active living.

    • Engaging in cultural activities leads to healthier agingRegularly engaging in cultural activities like concerts, museums, or singing in a choir can lead to healthier aging and potentially longer life.

Engaging with cultural activities, such as attending concerts or visiting museums, can lead to healthier aging and potentially longer life. A study published in the British Medical Journal found that frequent engagement in these activities was associated with lower mortality rates, even after accounting for factors like age and pre-existing health conditions. This relationship may be due in part to the mental and physical stimulation these activities provide, but there may be additional benefits yet to be understood. It's important to note that active engagement, such as singing in a choir, appears to have stronger health benefits than passive engagement, like listening to music. So, the key message is to stay curious and actively engage with the world around you through cultural activities. This could involve exploring art galleries, going to concerts, or even just taking a walk on the beach with grandkids. The important thing is to stay engaged and interested in the world around you.

    • Staying engaged and connected in lifeEmbrace new experiences, challenge stereotypes, stay curious, and maintain strong relationships to improve physical and mental health as we age.

Staying young and growing older disgracefully involves staying connected and engaged in life. Professor Andrew Stepto emphasized the importance of remaining curious and involved in the arts, as well as maintaining strong relationships with family and friends. He also suggested finding a sense of purpose and continuing to cultivate new relationships in later years. These actions can have a significant impact on both physical and mental health. Additionally, Stepto encouraged listeners to challenge societal stereotypes of aging and embrace new experiences. Overall, Stepto's advice emphasizes the importance of staying active, engaged, and connected throughout all stages of life.

In our bustling modern lives, it can be all too easy to wolf down our meals on the go, and never take the time to enjoy them properly. In this episode, Michael Mosley finds out how simply slowing down the speed at which you eat can help you feel full for longer, snack less, and improve your digestion. Read a poem

    Read a poem

Reading poetry can reduce stress and help give you words to express the things you're feeling. And reading a poem out loud has been shown to be a surprisingly simple way to activate your relaxation response and bring about a sense of calm. It’s all to do with the way it slows and controls your breathing rate, which in turn stimulates your parasympathetic nervous system and can lead to many beneficial effects. Michael Mosley speaks to Dietrich von Bonin from the Swiss Association of Art Therapies, who says as little as 5 minutes of rhythmic poetry read aloud can be even more effective than slow-paced breathing at relaxing your body and mind. Our volunteer Colm dives into the world of Irish poetry and incorporates reading it aloud into his bedtime routine.

    1817 Consistency Comes By Discipline

You're on the edge of glory with the start to the New Year. Make your mark this first day of the decade. Consistency comes by discipline.

Are you one who is looking toward living a healthier lifestyle? Well, you are not alone. However, if you set yourself up for success, you will be one of few left living out your healthy lifestyle come February.

So many people have good ideas and goals about how they want to live their lives. It sounds great when you talk about it. People are all in with you. But then, reality sets in.

Real life happens and some things have to be put on hold. And unfortunately, it usually your own goals.

Yet this year is going to be a spectacular year. Not only is the year 2020 cool enough by title, if you like numbers, but you are going to set yourself up for greatness because of the work you will do now instead of regretting life later.

    Consistency comes by discipline.

Without discipline, it's hard to be consistent in your actions. And without consistency, you can become relaxed in how you pursue your goals. Your mental attitude needs to be on point in order to keep your head and body in the game. It takes two!

"Motivation gets you going, but discipline keeps you growing." ~ John Maxwell

You have got to be your biggest fan and toughest team player.

You've got to be willing to do the hard work when you don't want to. Those temptations are going to appear around every corner. You can't let them derail your confidence in keeping the discipline and maintaining consistency.

    Discipline creates freedom.

"Discipline is built by consistently performing small acts of courage." ~ Robin Sharma

It's time to step it up. Train for life --- be FABulous!

The K.I.S.S. ~ Train for life --- be FABulous!

You want something different or better than where you are right now. That could be anything. We're talking about health and wellness. But you can apply this to writing a book, how you run your business.

    1. Flex your mental muscle. You need to continue to strengthen your mental agility with your goals at hand. You are creating a cohesive plan to adhere to even when you don't feel like it. Your mental capability has to adhere to your lifestyle goals. Just because you've had a bad day doesn't give you permission to eat a half-gallon of ice cream. A bad day is no longer an excuse when you are training for life.
    2. Adapt your body to a schedule. It's about finding a rhythm to your day. Every day may be the same, or it could vary based on activities and commitments; your non-negotiables. In order to build a lifestyle, the more proficient you must become in building a schedule
    3. Build integrity with yourself. You have got to believe and trust yourself. It's easy to build integrity with others. But how many promises and dreams have you broken with yourself? Too many! So build integrity with yourself. Perform small acts of courage. For example, set an hourly goal, or a morning and afternoon goal. Build belief in yourself. "The first and greatest victory is to conquer self." ~ Plato

"One step at a time leads to miles of greatness!" ~ Kristianne Wargo

The New Year brings about an opportunity for a fresh start; a way to jumpstart the direction you will go.

"This is the day that the Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." (Psalm 118:24)

"Train for life. Love your journey!"

1649 I Hate My Alarm Clock!

1649 I Hate My Alarm Clock!

When your alarm goes off in the morning, how do you feel? "I hate my alarm clock!" That seems to be the most common response. Got sleep?

Feeling tired seems to be more of the norm with people sleeping 20% less than what we did 100 years ago.

Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact

Sleep deprivation seems to be a norm in today's busyness. Not enough time to take care of yourself let alone getting enough sleep. Let's just stay up and feel worse.

Three out of five people have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

Common sense would be to prioritize sleep, but it's not common practice.

So let's change that. With the school season rapidly approaching and Fall around the corner, sleep needs to be taken seriously.

Sleep is essential to our health.

    • Brain function,
    • Immune health,
    • Hormonal balance,
    • Physical health,
    • And so much more!

When you don't get enough sleep, you can't handle the daily demands of your waking life. Your well-being is sacrificed.

At some point, sleeping must become a priority in order to live, love, and impact. This means, working on your sleep-wake cycle, better known as your circadian rhythm, must be intentional.

It's time to reclaim your sleep and practice good sleep hygiene.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Practice good sleep hygiene!

Be intentional with your sleep hygiene. This is a variety of practices and patterns for sleeping well and waking well.

    1. Maintain a consistent sleep pattern. Go to bed the same time every night, even on the weekend.
    2. Avoid stimulants close to bedtime. This is caffeine and nicotine. Alcohol can even be a problem.
    3. Be cautious of the food you eat prior to bedtime. Some foods like fried foods, citrus fruits, rich foods, and fatty foods can trigger indigestion for some people.
    4. Create a sleeping environment that is cooling and relaxing. A dark room with the temperature in the low to mid 60 degrees.
    5. Be intentional with limiting your exposure to blue light. This is what signals your body to wake up. This causes great confusion. So put away your technology, and go back to old fashion reading and writing or even listening to the radio.
    6. When you wake in the morning, be sure to expose yourself to bright light, preferably the sun --- natural light.
    7. Exercise as it keeps your body fit and ready for sleep. Be careful if you exercise prior to sleeping, as it can affect each person differently.
    8. BONUS --- If you can, take a power nap, but no more than 20-30 minutes.

All of this is just the beginning. Sleeping doesn't have to be overwhelming, but it does need to be a priority.

Your body works hard for you all day long. So treat your body well, and get great sleep giving it the opportunity to restore, repair, and renew itself for what tomorrow brings.

"Got sleep? Make time and sleep your way to well-being!"

    2950 Spin It Your Way!

    2950 Spin It Your Way!

Do failures and successes really define you as a person? Or is it the act of how you overcome? Don't let the cards you are dealt determine your direction. Spin it your way!

So how are you today? Are you in recovery mode from your Super Bowl party?

Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. https://createyournow.mn.co

Oh, and did your team win?

Today, we will take a play out of the playbook and do a little Monday quarterbacking.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Spin it your way!

Now, you have many choices, rather you win or lose, fail or succeed.

But how you continue to move forward sets the tone for your journey!

You can choose to get stuck in your own patterns and habits, and make excuses for why you fell short and didn't make it to the finish line.

Or you can choose to do it differently without excuses, no matter the result.

    1. Play through the highs and lows. And in this, you are giving your best! You have to stay focused. You can't give up regardless of where you land. "When you take action, you make traction. Take A.I.M.!" ~ Kristianne Wargo
    2. Keep it fresh and be creative. You can play in the game of life however you want. You get to come up with innovative ideas. You get to play to your strengths, so you can tighten your weaknesses. Think outside the box. "Patterns only keep you anchored to what worked in the moment. A new moment requires new actions to anchor." ~ Kristianne Wargo
    3. Be teachable throughout life. You can't do what God designed you to do if you aren't willing to become who He created you to be. You have got to be teachable. You must be willing to learn more even when you're at your best.

Life isn't about proving who you are. What matters is whose you are. When you consider how to overcome your circumstances or challenges, you are leading your life well.

PRAYER: May your journey continue to be steps of greatness that lead you closer to God and what He has designed for your life.

"Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!"
