Swifties Take Congress and How To Get Free Concert Tickets

    Podcast Summary

    • Monetizing underutilized assets with Airbnb and Taylor Swift's Ticketmaster debacleAirbnb can be a lucrative side hustle with minimal upfront costs. Meanwhile, the Taylor Swift Ticketmaster debacle highlights the need for government intervention in industries affecting consumers.

Monetizing underutilized assets, such as hosting a space on Airbnb, can be an easy and effective side hustle. Nicole Lappin, the host of the Money Rehab podcast, shared her personal experience of using Airbnb to generate income while she's away writing. She emphasized that it's an excellent option for those new to side hustles as it doesn't require significant upfront costs. Meanwhile, in the news, the Taylor Swift Ticketmaster debacle highlighted the need for government intervention in the entertainment industry. During a Senate hearing, senators quoted Taylor Swift lyrics, adding a unique twist to the proceedings. Despite the cringe factor, it was a fitting response to the chaos that ensued when Ticketmaster attempted to sell tickets for Swift's upcoming tour. Thousands of fans were left disappointed after hours of waiting in a virtual queue, only to be denied tickets due to bots and overwhelming demand. The incident underscores the importance of addressing issues in industries that can significantly impact consumers.

    • Buying Concert Tickets: A Frustrating ProcessPersistence and patience are key when buying concert tickets, but challenges like site crashes and sold-out inventory can make the process frustrating. Be aware of potential drawbacks like inflated prices from resellers.

Attending a highly anticipated concert can be a frustrating experience, especially when it comes to buying tickets. I learned this firsthand when I tried to purchase tickets for both Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen concerts. During the Bruce Springsteen presale, I was excited to secure tickets but was disappointed to find that most inventory had been sold out, leaving me with expensive, scattered seats. I encountered similar issues during the Taylor Swift presale, where the site crashed and I spent hours waiting in line. Despite the challenges, I was eventually able to secure reasonable seats for both concerts. The experience taught me the importance of being persistent and patient when buying concert tickets, as well as the potential drawbacks of ticket reselling and inflated prices. It's a reminder that attending a live concert is a special experience, but the process of securing tickets can be far from ideal.

    • Ticketmaster's dominance in ticket selling industryTicketmaster's monopoly in ticket sales and Live Nation's artist management and venue ownership threaten fair competition, potentially leading to higher prices and fewer choices for consumers.

The dominance of Ticketmaster in the ticket selling industry, which processes half a billion tickets annually and controls around 70% of major concert ticket sales in the US, raises concerns for consumers as it threatens the competitive market necessary for capitalism to function effectively. Ticketmaster's parent company, Live Nation, further reinforces this monopoly by managing popular artists and owning significant venues, creating a potential imbalance of power and reducing incentives for better products or lower prices. This high-profile case against Ticketmaster in court is an important step towards ensuring fair competition in the entertainment industry.

    • Live Nation's Control Over Ticketing PlatformsLive Nation's dominance over ticketing platforms like Ticketmaster leads to high fees for consumers, averaging 27% of the ticket cost. To save money, consider buying tickets in person, bidding on presale sites, or becoming a seat filler.

Live Nation's control over the concert industry extends beyond just the venues they own, giving them significant power over ticketing platforms like Ticketmaster. This dominance can lead to high fees for consumers, averaging 27% of the ticket cost, as quoted by Senator Amy Klobuchar. To avoid these fees, consider buying tickets in person at the box office, bidding on presale sites, or becoming a seat filler for events that don't require a full house. While Congress is considering potential solutions like breaking up Ticketmaster and Live Nation or capping ticket prices, these actions may not immediately solve the issue for those attending popular, in-demand events. In the meantime, these strategies can help consumers save money on tickets.

Former Disney Star Christy Carlson Romano and Brendan Rooney on Losing All the Disney Money, Healing Financial Trauma and Working With Your Spouse
You might think that Brendan Rooney, who had a "normal" middle-class childhood, enlisted in the Marines, and then went to Columbia University would have very little in common with Christy Carlson Romano, former Disney Channel child star who, in her words, made— and lost— millions of dollars. And yet, the married couple say their childhoods were not that different when it came to the hard financial lessons. Nicole sits down with Christy and Brendan, who run the podcast network Podco, and talk about what it's like being business partners with your romantic partner. Then, Christy talks about her financial journey after rocketing to superstardom so young, and how she made— and lost millions. We talk about when spending can turn into a form of self-harm, and her advice to anyone looking to build a healthier relationship with money.
