    • John Dee's Occult Possessions: The Devil's Looking GlassJohn Dee, a scholar with a fascination for the supernatural, owned a small, circular obsidian mirror, known as the devil's looking glass, used for angelology and sorcery. Contrary to popular belief, it was not a dark, framed mirror but rather a tool for spiritual exploration.

John Dee, a prominent Elizabethan scholar, was not only a learned man but also a man of the supernatural. He was known for his extensive library, his pursuit of scientific knowledge, and his involvement in the occult. One of his most intriguing possessions was a circular, polished obsidian mirror, referred to as the devil's looking glass. Contrary to popular belief, this mirror was not an ominous, framed mirror of darkness but rather a small, circular object with a diameter of 18.4 centimeters. Dee used this mirror, along with crystal spheres, in his pursuit of angelology and sorcery. The mirror, possibly brought back from Sir Francis Drake's voyages, may have been used by Aztec priests in their worship of Tezcatlipoca, the god of the smoking mirror. However, Dee also possessed another mirror, bequeathed to him by Sir William Pickering, which he proudly displayed in his study for its unique properties, rather than using it in his occult practices.

    • Mirrors: More Complex Than They SeemMirrors can create unsettling reflections due to mathematical perspective and isolation, but building community connections can create stronger, more resilient environments.

Mirrors can be more complex and unsettling than they appear at first glance. While it may seem supernatural for a reflection to fight back, it's actually a result of mathematical perspective. A non-reversing mirror, which can be created by connecting two regular mirrors at their edges at a 90-degree angle, can create an inside-out reflection. Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges described this feeling of being watched by a mirror as unsettling, and even a typical mirror's reflection can make us feel alone or isolated. Neighbor to Neighbor, a California volunteer network, emphasizes the importance of building connections within our communities. By reaching out to our neighbors and working together, we can create stronger, more resilient communities. Across Generations, a podcast, brings together the voices of black women to unite and share their experiences. By understanding the complexities of mirrors and the importance of community, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the world around us.

    • Exploring diverse perspectives through intergenerational conversationsPodcasts like 'Minnie Questions' and 'The Daily Show Ears Edition' bring together guests from different generations to share unique insights and perspectives through engaging conversations, available on various platforms.

Intergenerational conversations can lead to unique perspectives and insights. Minnie Driver's podcast, "Minnie Questions," brings together guests from different generations to answer the same seven questions, resulting in diverse responses. In the third season of this podcast, listeners can look forward to interviews with Courtney Cox, Rob Delaney, Liz Fehr, and more. Additionally, Jon Stewart is back hosting The Daily Show, and his podcast, "The Daily Show Ears Edition," offers extended interviews and the latest news headlines. Both podcasts provide engaging content and are available on various platforms including the Iheartradio app and Apple Podcasts. Through these conversations, we can gain wisdom, laughter, and a deeper understanding of various viewpoints.
