The Essence of Being An Entrepreneur | RIP Larry King

    enJanuary 24, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • From humble beginnings to digital media empireGary Vaynerchuk's success is rooted in his immigrant background, love for wine, and relentless hustle. He adapted to the internet and grew his family's business, leading to a multimillion-dollar digital media empire.

Gary Vaynerchuk's success story is rooted in his humble beginnings as an immigrant and his relentless hustle. Born in Belarus and raised in the United States, Gary grew up working hard to make ends meet, from running lemonade stands to eventually taking over his father's liquor store. He fell in love with wine collecting at a young age and had dreams of building a franchise of wine shops. When he discovered the internet in college, he saw an opportunity and launched one of the first e-commerce wine businesses in America. From there, he grew his family's business into a multimillion-dollar enterprise, laying the foundation for his digital media empire. Throughout his journey, Gary's ability to adapt and hustle has been instrumental in his success. He continues to inspire and share his insights through his popular YouTube show and books.

    • Traditional education may not cater to entrepreneurs' needsSuccessful entrepreneurs like Gary Vaynerchuk didn't thrive in school but leveraged self-awareness and marketing skills to build their businesses

Traditional education may not be the best fit for entrepreneurs. Gary Vaynerchuk, a successful entrepreneur and businessman, shares his story of growing up as a wine expert but struggling in school. He attributes his parents' recognition of his entrepreneurial spirit as a key factor in his success. Vaynerchuk argues that schools are built for workers and fail to teach skills relevant to entrepreneurship. He believes that entrepreneurs who have been successful in the educational system may not be as prepared for the challenges of the business world as those who have faced adversity. Vaynerchuk emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and creating an ecosystem where those closest to you feel comfortable telling you the truth about your strengths and weaknesses. His career began in the e-commerce world, and he leveraged various marketing channels like email marketing, banner advertising, Google AdWords, and YouTube to build his business. Despite his lack of formal education, Vaynerchuk's self-awareness and entrepreneurial spirit allowed him to succeed in the business world.

    • Understanding the unique context of each social media platformTreat social media seriously, recognize each platform's distinct context, and provide value to effectively engage audiences

Social media is a serious and transformative tool for businesses, and it's essential to understand the unique context of each platform to effectively provide value to your audience. Gary Vaynerchuk, CEO of VaynerMedia, which works with major brands like Toyota and Pepsi, emphasizes the importance of taking social media seriously as we witness a significant shift from traditional media to digital platforms. He suggests treating social media as the current state of the internet and recognizing that each platform - such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube - has its distinct context and requires tailored content. Additionally, providing value rather than constantly pushing sales messages is crucial for successful social media engagement.

    • The impact of technology on social media and societyTechnology's influence leads to content filtering, younger demographics' preference, and emotional fanaticism in sports.

Technology is constantly evolving and changing the way we consume information and connect with each other. Gary Vaynerchuk, a renowned marketing expert, discussed his previous book "Jab, Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook" which taught the formula of providing value through content to potentially sell products. However, with the advancement of technology, platforms like Twitter are losing their edge due to the overwhelming amount of information. Newer social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram are adapting by filtering content based on users' interests, making it more appealing to younger demographics. Even older generations are adopting more youthful behaviors, such as using emojis, due to the influence of technology. This "youthification" of society is also impacting the world of sports, making fanaticism and emotional connections even more important. Despite these changes, Vaynerchuk remains optimistic about his goal to buy the New York Jets, viewing the current state of technology as an opportunity rather than a threat.

    • From dreaming of a Jets jersey to owning the teamDetermination, cash flow, identifying strengths, and upholding one's word are crucial for success.

Ambition and determination, even in the face of adversity, can drive a person to pursue their dreams. The speaker's journey from not being able to afford a Jets jersey as a child to the current goal of owning the entire team is a testament to this. Another important takeaway is the practicality and importance of cash flow in starting a business, as well as identifying one's strengths and finding the white space in a sector to differentiate from competitors. Lastly, the value of one's word and the lessons learned from family were emphasized as influential experiences.

    • The impact of key experiences and relationshipsFocusing on significant experiences and relationships can lead to unexpected opportunities and career growth. Effectively allocating resources and staying adaptable to change are essential for success.

Key experiences and relationships in our lives, even those that may seem insignificant at first, can have a profound impact on our future. Gary Vaynerchuk shares his personal story of growing up without a father figure until the age of 14, and how one interaction with him later in life changed the course of his career from being a successful salesman to having "real potential." He also emphasizes the importance of focusing energy and resources effectively, and shares his belief that virtual reality and Africa are industries on the verge of explosive growth. Additionally, he expresses admiration for entrepreneurs like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg, and the transformative power of technology in business. Overall, Vaynerchuk's message encourages resilience, adaptability, and a forward-thinking perspective.

    • Leveraging the internet for youth entrepreneurship and long-term successThe internet provides opportunities for young entrepreneurs to start businesses and reach large scales, but success requires hustle, focus on long-term goals, and understanding that attention is the new asset. Maintain a solid print audience by building a digital presence and offering unique value.

The internet has played a significant role in enabling entrepreneurs to start businesses at a younger age and reach massive scales. Gary Vaynerchuk acknowledges this luck and emphasizes the importance of hustling and focusing on long-term goals, rather than immediate achievements like owning a sports team. He also highlights the importance of understanding that attention is the new asset and the internet owns it. Additionally, in the digital age, maintaining a solid print audience requires building a digital presence and offering unique value that digital media cannot provide. Lastly, to avoid spamming social media, simply avoid being spammy.

    • Think like a media company, provide valueEmulate media companies, offer value to build authentic connections, anticipate new apps as game changers

Providing value to people is key to building authentic connections, whether it's through social media, business interactions, or personal relationships. John Crabtree emphasizes the importance of thinking like a media company instead of a salesperson to avoid coming off as spammy. He also anticipates the emergence of new apps like Musical.ly and Anchor as game changers, created by young innovators who identify a need and fill it. AtsoulmanScofield, an accomplished interviewer, expresses his excitement about the present moment and his role in it, and applies his emotional intelligence as a CEO to raising his family, encouraging his children to pursue their passions while setting a standard for striving for excellence.

    • Leading Roles and Personal LivesDespite the challenges and negatives in their respective leadership roles, both individuals prioritize keeping their work stresses separate from their personal lives for a rewarding perspective.

Both individuals in the discussion have experienced the stresses and negatives that come with leading roles in their respective fields, and they prefer to keep those issues separate from their personal lives. The speaker, who is a CEO, views his role as solely dealing with negative issues, while his friend, who is a firefighter, also faces constant challenges in his profession. They both acknowledge that while their daily experiences may be negative on a micro level, the macro view of their roles is rewarding. This perspective influences their decision to keep their work-related stresses from affecting their personal relationships. The podcast hosts express their gratitude for positive reviews and encourage listeners to subscribe and leave feedback.

The Most Important Question In Business

The Most Important Question In Business

Here’s the problem most people run into when they create content online: They think they have to have something to say. So many of you aren’t putting out content online because you think you need to have the perfect message, or something “valuable” to share (based on your own arbitrary opinion). And what I’m telling you is, you will get more business if you put out literally anything. If you’re an auto dealer, you could put out a 5 min video every afternoon just recapping what happened in your day. If you’re a real estate agent, you could post updates on what your opinions are about the Super Bowl teams. Get on social media and tell your truth … it’s really that simple.

Last episode of 2019 - Back in January 2020 with Season 2! | BBB 088

It's my year end wrap up! This is a behind the scenes look at what I've learned across my first 88 episodes. We'll be taking a small break in December and then launching Season 2 in January!

Thanks to everyone that's been a part of the journey with me this year. Your support is hugely appreciated. Big shout out to all the amazing guests we've had this year. Together, we've made this show a top 100 marketing podcast.

It's been a huge year for me in terms of investing in personal growth and development. I've attended more events, taken more classes, invested in more coaching, and met more people than I have at any other point in my life. And I couldn't be happier with the results.

I've heard it say that it's not enough to want to be great. You actually have to do something great. And while I don't think I've done that yet, I know I've set myself up to start to serve others and have impact in their lives and businesses. I've developed the skills, the platform, and the community that I will need to create opportunities to be great. This was the year of finding my voice, building community, and finding clarity in my business.

Next year will be the year of nurturing what I've built to get better at coaching and helping people. And then it's all about scaling the business and sharing my message with as many people as possible. I'll be seeking out more speaking opportunities and PR to share my message and grow my community. And I'll continue to focus where I invest my time in terms of the next level of personal development and growth.

What a crazy year. It's been exciting and stressful, encouraging and crushing, rewarding and demanding, and I've had plenty of wins and losses. The biggest thing I'm working on is patience. I know how much work it's going to take to get to the next level of my business, but I'm determined to focus on what's in front of me and to just take the next step forward.

I appreciate everyone listening and following along on this journey.
