    enAugust 05, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Exploring Flexibility and Focus in Various FieldsLinkedIn is valuable for hiring, flexibility is crucial in insurance and adventure, and focus and determination lead to success in any field

LinkedIn is an effective platform for hiring professionals, especially those who aren't actively looking for new jobs. It's like finding your car keys in a fish tank to ignore LinkedIn for your hiring needs. Flexibility is another key theme in this podcast. Whether it's through yoga or insurance coverage, flexibility is important. In the world of insurance, UnitedHealthcare Insurance Plans offer flexible and budget-friendly coverage options for medical, vision, dental, and more. In the realm of adventure, the record for the fastest ascent of the world's 14 highest mountains has been broken, with Norwegian Kristin Haraldsen and Nepali Tengen Lama Sherpa completing their feat in just 92 days. Their achievement was a testament to focus, determination, and the use of modern equipment. In the realm of music, Felix Kliese, born without arms, wows audiences by playing the French horn with his feet. The happiness of his audience is what drives him to make music. In the end, whether it's through climbing mountains, making music, or hiring employees, flexibility and focus are essential ingredients for success.

    • Overcoming challenges and forming strong bondsNorwegian climber Kristin Harle broke records by persevering through grueling climbs, forming strong bonds with her team, and emphasizing environmental consciousness.

Enduring challenges and achieving great feats requires perseverance, preparation, and strong relationships. Norwegian climber Kristin Harle broke the record for climbing the highest peaks in Tibet, Nepal, and Pakistan in a single season. She and her team, including Sherpa Tengen Lama, faced long and grueling climbs, sometimes taking up to 40 hours to reach the summit. Harle's success came from her determination, preparation, and the bond she formed with her team. Another important takeaway is the need to address environmental issues, such as the production of plastic. Scientists like Eleftheria Rumeli and her colleagues are working on solutions, like using spirulina, a type of blue-green cyanobacteria, to create a new plastic that can decompose naturally. This innovative approach highlights the importance of finding sustainable alternatives to harmful materials. Harle's journey serves as an inspiration to push beyond limits and form strong bonds, while also emphasizing the need for environmental consciousness.

    • Exploring sustainable alternatives to plastic using biomass and plantsResearchers and entrepreneurs create sustainable alternatives to plastic using protein-rich biomass, starch from plants, and interdisciplinary collaboration. These innovations reduce plastic waste and ensure safe decomposition without leaving harmful microplastics or toxins.

Researchers and entrepreneurs are exploring various ways to create sustainable alternatives to plastic, using different types of biomass and plants. For instance, some are transforming protein-rich biomass into materials that can replace single-use plastics in food contact, while others are utilizing starches from plants like cassava to create fully biodegradable plastics. These innovations are crucial as plastic pollution continues to be a significant environmental issue. The importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and multiple approaches to finding solutions cannot be overstated. While individual contributions may not change the world on their own, the collective impact of these efforts will lead to a more sustainable future. For example, Aletheria Rumele's team is working on biodegradable plastics, while Chan Lau's company, Cassava Bags, has already created biodegradable bags from cassava starch. These solutions not only reduce plastic waste but also ensure that the materials decompose safely without leaving harmful microplastics or toxins behind.

Regardless of where he performs, the key is that people are enjoying the concert. His instrument, while not physically adapted, is accessible to anyone who can play the French horn. Learning to play the French horn from a young age, despite challenges, was a significant miracle for Coursil. He emphasizes the difficulty of becoming a musician, but encourages perseverance. Coursil also notes that classical music audiences are becoming more diverse, particularly in Asia where the majority are young adults. Overall, his message is one of passion, accessibility, and the joy of music for all.

Music, no matter where it's played or who plays it, has the power to communicate emotions and broaden our horizons. Felix Kliese, a musician, shared his experiences of performing in Asia versus Europe and how each audience brings a unique energy to the experience. For Felix, the joy of learning new pieces and the ability to express emotions through music outweighs any preference for a particular piece or composer. Meanwhile, a listener shared a personal story of finding happiness in the sound of her young daughter's laughter recorded years ago. This simple, everyday sound brings joy to her life, demonstrating how music and sound can evoke powerful emotions. Siobhan Brady, an Irish harpist, also showcased the transformative power of music through her record-breaking performance at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Despite the challenges of the ascent, she was able to bring beauty and clarity to the moment through her music. In essence, music transcends borders, ages, and challenges, providing a universal language for communication and emotion. Whether it's a young child's laughter or a concert at the top of a mountain, music has the power to touch our lives in profound ways.

    • Stories of determination and creativityFrom climbing mountains with a harp to sharing a lottery jackpot, determination and creativity lead to remarkable experiences and outcomes. Sharing talents and resources can also bring joy and success to others.

Despite facing challenges, she ultimately decided to share her knowledge with a local team, resulting in a successful and unforgettable ascent. Elsewhere, a group of garbage collectors in India pooled their resources to buy a lottery ticket and shared a massive jackpot. Meanwhile, a farmer in the US planted an 80-acre sunflower field as a surprise anniversary gift. Ivye Orito, a rising chess grandmaster, embodies these qualities and her father is proud not only of her achievements on the board but also the person she has become. Trevor Williams - Spookey &

the creation of British Soul Part 1

This week Carlton explores the Black British soul music scene, with one of the guys who was lived it and made it happen - Trevor Williams.

In addition to the music Trevor explains to Carlton how he ventured out to make a name for himself and his close school friends by breaking into the music scene of the mid 1970’s when Black British soul bands were a rarity. However in this show, as is normally the case with Carlton, he digs beneath the surface to find out why Trevor took this route.

What was home and school life like for the young Trevor?

What challenges did Britain’s Imperial children of colour undergo in what one called the empire’s motherland, Britain?

How did Trevor’s Jamaican parents cope with the hostilities of the time?

How did Trevor’s parents obtain housing and work?

How did Trevor’s entrepreneurial mother achieve her goals?

What did Trevor’s hard working father think of Trevor’s venture into the music industry. Was Trevor musically gifted?

What barriers were put in Spookey’s way as they created the band?

And were the band aware of how cutthroat the industry was that they were entering?

Consequently, we gain a feel of the trails and tribulations the band went through to climb the ladder to achieve some success in the music industry, as well as being one of the groups that lead the way for a home grown British version of that most American of musical genres Rhythm and Blues’ - Soul Music.

This episode solely covers part one of this truly interesting sit down with Spookey and Sweet Sensation’s star, Trevor Williams, don’t miss part two.
