    Podcast Summary

    • Building strong community connections and addressing student debtCommunity bonds are vital, especially during hardships, and addressing student debt's impact on individuals and society is crucial.

Building strong community connections and addressing the issue of student debt are crucial for individuals and society as a whole. Neighbor to Neighbor, a California volunteer's network, emphasizes the importance of community bonds and encourages people to help each other out, especially during challenging times. Meanwhile, the burden of student debt, which is now at an all-time high with nearly $2 trillion owed by over 50 million borrowers, affects people of all ages and can have long-lasting consequences. This issue not only affects younger generations but also older Americans, with 40% of seniors over 65 in default, and Washington collecting debts by garnishing their Social Security. It's essential to find ways to support each other and advocate for solutions to these pressing issues.

    • Student debt crisis affects older AmericansOlder Americans face financial hardship from student debt, impacting their lives and well-being, requiring solutions like loan cancellation, free education, or consequences for colleges

The student debt crisis is a significant issue affecting millions of older Americans, with many struggling to make payments that even just cover the interest. This debt can follow borrowers for their entire lives, causing financial hardship and embarrassment. Solutions to this crisis could include loan cancellation, free education, or consequences for colleges whose graduates can't repay their loans. Ultimately, America needs to find a way to alleviate the burden of student debt, especially as it can even impact individuals at the end of their lives. The emotional and financial toll of student debt can be devastating, and it's important to address this issue to ensure individuals can focus on their lives and well-being rather than being weighed down by debt.

    • The value of community and connectionDespite material losses, relationships and support networks provide a sense of security and belonging

Despite the disappointment and frustration over the distribution of Mister McCormick's estate going mostly to Brent, the collection agent for his student loans, it's important to remember the value of community and connection. While material possessions may not have been passed down to everyone involved, the opportunity to build meaningful relationships and support networks through initiatives like Neighbor to Neighbor can provide a sense of security and belonging. It's a reminder that while life may not always go as planned, the people around us can be a source of strength and hope.

    • Building a community is like growing an avocado in CaliforniaCalifornia's ideal conditions, farmer's care and sustainable practices result in great avocados and strong communities.

Building a connected community is much like growing a California avocado. Just as an avocado is shaped by ideal conditions and the care of local farmers, a community thrives when neighbors come together and support each other. The best avocados, like a strong community, are the result of responsible and sustainable practices. To experience the benefits, you just need to open yourself up to it. Visitcanebors.com is a great resource for learning how to build a more connected community, neighbor to neighbor. And just as California is known for producing the finest avocados, it's a place where this idea comes naturally. The avocados grown there are a testament to the idyllic conditions, rich soil, gentle rain, and friendly California sunshine. The farmers who grow these avocados are dedicated to their craft and committed to sustainable practices. So, whether you're interested in growing a better community or a better avocado, California is the place to be. And right now, you can learn more about both at californiaavocado.com.

There is hope for academia after all.

Looking for a link we mentioned? It's here: https://linktr.ee/philosophyforourtimes

We need a revolution. Universities are turning into corporations, students, academics and the culture at large is damaged as a result. Cambridge academics Michael Hrebeniak and Isabelle McNeill lay out their vision of how to revolutionise education by removing neo-liberal "outputs" culture and democratising the university once again.

Michael Hrebeniak is a polymath: an academic, author, film-maker, ex-jazz musician, and journalist. He is Director of Studies in English at Wolfson College and Lecturer in English at Magdalene College, Cambridge.

Isabelle McNeill is Philomathia Fellow in French at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge, where she teaches French literature and cinema.

Ep. 407 - Welfare For the Upper Class

Ep. 407 - Welfare For the Upper Class

Democrats want to wave the magic wand and "cancel" student loans. But if we have a magic wand to wave, why are we doing it for the sake of upper class people? Why not cancel car loans, or credit card loans, or mortgages, for the working class? Also, an "abortion storyteller," whatever that is, gives advice on how to talk to kids about abortion. It's as horrifying as you expect.
