    About this Episode

Fun and games with this episode, it went out live on 25 March 2021 at 19h00.  Straight out the blocks, there were problems with the station stream, I had no music playing as I prepared to patch into the schedule.  This led to a lot of unnecessary fault finding on my side.  Once the show started it came through but, on my intro, the microphone that was fine before the show suddenly didn't work.  Fortunately, I realised that the iRig has a battery and that sorted out the problem.  We kicked off with Leslie West and 'Nothing's Changed' off his wonderful Unusual Suspects album.    Next up Ace Frehley with Cold Gin and Black Sabbath with Snowblind,  tales of the excesses of old school rockstars ;-).

There is a lot of new stuff out so we caught up with some of it, more of Alice Cooper's latest Detroit Stories, Walking Papers'  The Light Below, and a track off the brand new Smith / Kotzen album which gets released about 8 hours after this show.  The highlight for me was the new Myles Kennedy track, album to be released in May, the pre-release single 'Ides of March' is amazing, guitar work all over it, I think Myles is going to deliver an amazing album here.

The show had a number of couplings two tracks about crying, two tracks by guys called Tom, two tracks called Hold On, the usual things we do.  I enjoyed the Punk part of the show, good to hear the Jam with Going Underground and a first time for Gary Numan.  As usual, we ran out of time.

Artists featured:  Leslie West, Ace Frehley, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Motörhead, Michael Monroe, Chickenfoot, Jimmy Barnes, Alice Cooper, Texas Hippie Coalition, Audioslave, Seether, The Jam, Gary Numan, Sex Pistols, Warrior Soul, Machine Head, Guns 'n'  Roses, Halestorm, Danko Jones, Live, 12th Avenue, The Color Blew, Myles Kennedy, Smith / Kotzen, Judas Priest. Walking Papers, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Tom Keifer, Kid Rock, Zakk Wylde, Dan Patlansky, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Badlands, Avenged Sevenfold.

Season 7 Episode 9 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 29 Feb 2024.  We had a full house in TSORR Central and the show was an absolute pleasure to do.   It was a good mix of classics, brand new tracks, heavy, not so heavy, something for everyone.

For this week’s Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases what an artist is all about, we gave the multi-talented Steven Wilson the slot.  Wilson is well known for his work as a solo artist as well as with Porcupine Tree released Hand. Cannot.  Erase in 2015.  We listened to a track called 'Happy Returns / Ascendant Here On'.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E8

S7E8 went out live on Rebel Rock radio at 19h00 on 22 Feb 2024.  It was touch and go with a fiber failure an hour before the show, big well done to the guys at Vodacom Fibre for sorting it out in time.  We started with a bit of ACDC and ‘Overdose’ off the Let There Be Rock album and just kept on building from there.

This week's Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases what an artist is all about was the original version of Am I Evil by Diamond Head.  You may only know the Metallica version and they have indeed made it famous, but it all started here.  I went into the story in a bit of detail because it is one of the best examples of a win–win ever.  Everyone involved scored because of this track and it really is iconic.

The Diabolical challenge this week looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘G’.  The idea is that we have 4 albums, and you can only pick one.  This week we had:

The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E7

Welcome to S7E7 of The Story of Rock and Roll radio Show.  This one went out on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 15 Feb 2024.  I was in Clarens with master guitarist Dan Patlansky and a whole lot of guitar maniacs so the show deals with that a bit, but for the main, it is straight down-the-line Rock and Metal, as you would expect.

This week's Immortals feature – a track over 7 min that showcases what an artist is all about features the man himself, Mr Dan Patlansky with a track recorded back in 2006 on an album called Real. The track is called Bad Weather Blues and showcases just what a great player he is.  Next week I hope to play you a short interview Dan and I are planning regarding his new album Movin’ On.

The Diabolical challenge this week looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘G’.  The idea is that we have 4 albums and you can only pick one.  This week we had:

Guns ‘n’ Roses – Use Your Illusion II

Artists featured:  Saxon, Volbeat, Thunder, Burn the Priest, Five Finger Death Punch, KK’s Priest, Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, The Angels, Cold Chisel, Rose Tattoo, Mother Love Bone, Junk Yard, Warrant, Suicide Bombers, Joel Hoekstra’s 13, Motörhead, Buckcherry, ACDC, Machine Head, Burning Rain, The Winery Dogs, Green Day, Blink 182, Stone Temple Pilots, Faith No More, Dan Patlansky, Grand Funk Railroad, Golden Earring, Great White, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Cadillac Sun, 12th Avenue, Seether, Rammstein, The Pretty Reckless, Arch enemy, Powder Finger.

Welcome to The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Season 7 episode 6 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 8 Feb 2024.  As always, the show consisted of 3 hours of Rock and Metal and covered all sorts of artists from late 1960 through to albums released this week.  You should find something amongst this lot, see 'Artists featured' below (in order of appearance).

The Immortals track this week came from Blue Öyster Cult, a track called Shooting Shark off The Revolution By Night album.  Buck Dhara on guitar never disappoints.

The Diabolical Challenge this week looked at the letter ‘F’.  As with last week's 'E', this one was not easy either, not a lot of bands starting with ‘F’.  Foreigner got bumped for Fokofpolisiekar which may not make sense to international listeners.  All I can say is that if you read the book, The Story of Rock and Roll, things will be clearer.  Fokofpolisiekar were a legendary live band and a huge part of my life in the early ’00s.   We looked at the following albums and played a track off each:

    Free – Fire and Water

Five Finger Death Punch – American Capitalist

    Fokofpolisiekar – Lugsteurings

    Foo Fighters – Wasting Light

Artists featured:  The Jam, Motörhead, Night Ranger, the Temperance Movement, Phil Campbell, Roan Van As, Tom Petty, Iced Earth, hell Fire, Kiss, L.A. Guns, Massive Wagons, Circus of Power, Doomsday Outlaw, Halestorm, The Distillers, The Wildhearts, Iron maiden, Judas Priest, Nevada beach, Tokyo Blade, Tony Martin,  Roadkill Ghost Choir, Volbeat, W.A.S.P., Blue Öyster Cult, Free, Five Finger Death Punch, Fokofpolisiekar, Foo Fighters, Extreme, Deep Purple, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Avenged Sevenfold, ACDC

Welcome to The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Season 7 episode 5 aired live at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 1 Feb 2024.  As always, the show consisted of 3 hours of Rock and Metal and covered all sorts of artists from late 1960 through to albums released this week.  You should find something amongst this lot, see artists featured below (in order of appearance).

The Immortals track this week came from W.A.S.P., a track called ‘The Tool’ off First Blood…..Last Cuts.

The Diabolical Challenge this week looked at the letter ‘E’.  This is one of the skinnier letters of the alphabet and not as easy to find artists as it is with ‘M’ and ‘A’ and ‘S’.  We looked at:

Elton John – Madman Across the Water

    The Eagles -Hotel California

    Exodus – Bonded By Blood

    Extreme – Pornograffitti

Hotel California took it in the end, tough challenge.

Artists featured:  Thin Lizzy, The Pretty Reckless, Those Damn Crows, Poison, twisted Sister, Adrenaline Mob, ZZ Top, Dan Patlansky, BlackØwl, Massive Wagons, Green day, Foo Fighters, Saxon, Judas Priest, Alice Cooper, Journey, Five Finger Death Punch, Texas Hippie Coalition, Frank Marino, Gary Moore, The Jam, Stiff Little Fingers, The Stranglers, Stone Temple Pilots, System of a Down, Queen,, W.A.S.P., Elton John, The Eagles, Extreme, Exodus, UFO, Union, Cindy-Louise, Kenny Hughes, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Rammstein, The Haunted.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E4

Welcome to Episode 4 of Season 7.  S7E4 went out live at 19h00 on 25 Jan 2024 on Rebel Rock Radio.  Amazing to think that the first month of 2024 is done, where does the time go?  We started gently with some Iron Maiden and the show progressed from there.  We had new releases from Green Day, Saxon, Judas Priest, and Ryan Adams.  The year is starting off well.

The Immortals slot, a track over 7 min long, went to Deep Purple’s ‘Knocking at Your Back Door' off their 1984 Perfect Strangers album.  This album was the reunion of the celebrated Mk II line-up and did very well for them.

The Diabolical Challenge this week was 4 bands starting with the Letter ‘D’:

Dio – The Last in Line

The Darkness – Permission to Land

David Bowie – Scary Monsters and Super Creeps

     Bowie was unstoppable here.

S7E3 aired live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 18 Jan 2024.

It ended up being one of my favourite shows ever.  The end was gloriously spontaneous, and the people tuned in were just awesome.  Going round the world in 40 min at the end of the show was amazing, unplanned and a great way to say goodnight.

The Immortals track in the episode was Rainbow’s ‘Light in the Black’.  This comes off the Rising album, one of the greatest albums to come out of the ‘70s

This weeks Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘C’.  The four albums were Chickenfoot III, London Calling, Blast Tyrant, and Electric:

     The tracks played were.

    Chickenfoot – Alright, alright

The Cult – Love Removal Machine

    The Clash – London Calling

Episode 2 of Season 7 aired live at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 11 Jan 2024.

The Immortals feature this week is from Rush, a track called By-tor and the Snow Dog off their second album Fly By Night.  This was the first album they made after Neal Peart joined the band after the resignation of John Rutsey.  The track consists of 8 parts and gave the world the first glimpse of the direction Rush were taking going forward.  There was a little technical glitch after Yngwie J. Malmsteen, it comes back after about 45 seconds so just jump it or wait it out, apologies for that.

The Diabolical Challenge checked out 4 bands found under ‘B’ in the record collection.  We took a listen to tracks off Mob Rules, Badlands, Nebraska, and Boston:

    Black Sabbath – Mob Rules

    Boston –

Badlands – Dancing on the Edge

Bruce Springsteen  - Reason to Believe

Artists Featured:  Hanoi Rocks, Joe Bonamassa, Krokus, Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons, Ozzy Osbourne, Danko Jones, Halford, Iron Maiden, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Drowning Pool, Alice In Chains, Beartooth, Coheed & Cambria, Ryan Adams, Simon & Garfunkel, Black Star Riders, Yngwie J. The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E1

Welcome to the 7th season of The Story of Rock and Roll radio Show.  S7E1 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 4 Jan 2024.  We kicked off with David Bowie and It’s No Game (Part 1) which feels like the perfect song for where we find ourselves in 2024.

The Diabolical Challenge has had a make-over.  In Season 6 I presented 4 albums from a specific year and listeners got to vote on which one they would choose if they could only take one.  Well with 52 shows in 2023, we ran out of years.  The new Diabolical Challenge looks at things alphabetically.  We will do two cycles A – Z to get us through to the end of Season 7.  Starting at 'A" we had:

ACDC – Flick of the Switch

Avenged Sevenfold – City of Evil

Accept – Balls to the Wall and

    Audioslave – Audioslave

The Immortals track, a track over 7 minutes long that never gets airplay but is an amazing example of a band or artist at their best stays as is and we kicked off the year with Grand Funk Railroad and a track called ‘Inside Looking Out’ and that one was especially dedicated to Norman Roux.

Artists featured: David Bowie, Dee Snider, KK’s priest, Def Leppard, Iced Earth, Foghat, Hawkwind, Saxon, Scorpions, L,A. Guns, Skid Row, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Seether, Reef, Rammstein, Böhse Onkelz, Demon, Hellyeah, Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Girish & the Chronicles, Jelusick, Dio, Guns ‘n’ Roses. Grand Funk Railroad, Accept, Avenged Sevenfold, Audioslave, ACDC, Phil Campbell & the Bastard Sons, ZZ Top, Roan Ash, Warren Zevon, Fire Horses, My Chemical Romance, Bruce Springsteen.
