The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E6

The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E6

Welcome to The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Season 7 episode 6 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 8 Feb 2024.  As always, the show consisted of 3 hours of Rock and Metal and covered all sorts of artists from late 1960 through to albums released this week.  You should find something amongst this lot, see 'Artists featured' below (in order of appearance).

The Immortals track this week came from Blue Öyster Cult, a track called Shooting Shark off The Revolution By Night album.  Buck Dhara on guitar never disappoints.

The Diabolical Challenge this week looked at the letter ‘F’.  As with last week's 'E', this one was not easy either, not a lot of bands starting with ‘F’.  Foreigner got bumped for Fokofpolisiekar which may not make sense to international listeners.  All I can say is that if you read the book, The Story of Rock and Roll, things will be clearer.  Fokofpolisiekar were a legendary live band and a huge part of my life in the early ’00s.   We looked at the following albums and played a track off each:

    Free – Fire and Water

Five Finger Death Punch – American Capitalist

    Fokofpolisiekar – Lugsteurings

    Foo Fighters – Wasting Light

Artists featured:  The Jam, Motörhead, Night Ranger, the Temperance Movement, Phil Campbell, Roan Van As, Tom Petty, Iced Earth, hell Fire, Kiss, L.A. Guns, Massive Wagons, Circus of Power, Doomsday Outlaw, Halestorm, The Distillers, The Wildhearts, Iron maiden, Judas Priest, Nevada beach, Tokyo Blade, Tony Martin,  Roadkill Ghost Choir, Volbeat, W.A.S.P., Blue Öyster Cult, Free, Five Finger Death Punch, Fokofpolisiekar, Foo Fighters, Extreme, Deep Purple, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Avenged Sevenfold, ACDC

The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E2

Episode 2 of Season 7 aired live at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 11 Jan 2024.

The Immortals feature this week is from Rush, a track called By-tor and the Snow Dog off their second album Fly By Night.  This was the first album they made after Neal Peart joined the band after the resignation of John Rutsey.  The track consists of 8 parts and gave the world the first glimpse of the direction Rush were taking going forward.  There was a little technical glitch after Yngwie J. Malmsteen, it comes back after about 45 seconds so just jump it or wait it out, apologies for that.

The Diabolical Challenge checked out 4 bands found under ‘B’ in the record collection.  We took a listen to tracks off Mob Rules, Badlands, Nebraska, and Boston:

    Black Sabbath – Mob Rules

    Boston –

Badlands – Dancing on the Edge

Bruce Springsteen  - Reason to Believe

Artists Featured:  Hanoi Rocks, Joe Bonamassa, Krokus, Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons, Ozzy Osbourne, Danko Jones, Halford, Iron Maiden, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Drowning Pool, Alice In Chains, Beartooth, Coheed & Cambria, Ryan Adams, Simon & Garfunkel, Black Star Riders, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Savage, Demon, David Bowie, The Clash, Rush, Boston, Black Sabbath, Badlands, Bruse Springsteen, Metallica, Arch enemy, Kid Rock, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Circus of Power, Buck Cherry, The Cult, Joe Satriani

The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E1

The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E1

Welcome to the 7th season of The Story of Rock and Roll radio Show.  S7E1 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 4 Jan 2024.  We kicked off with David Bowie and It’s No Game (Part 1) which feels like the perfect song for where we find ourselves in 2024.

The Diabolical Challenge has had a make-over.  In Season 6 I presented 4 albums from a specific year and listeners got to vote on which one they would choose if they could only take one.  Well with 52 shows in 2023, we ran out of years.  The new Diabolical Challenge looks at things alphabetically.  We will do two cycles A – Z to get us through to the end of Season 7.  Starting at 'A" we had:

ACDC – Flick of the Switch

Avenged Sevenfold – City of Evil

Accept – Balls to the Wall and

    Audioslave – Audioslave

The Immortals track, a track over 7 minutes long that never gets airplay but is an amazing example of a band or artist at their best stays as is and we kicked off the year with Grand Funk Railroad and a track called ‘Inside Looking Out’ and that one was especially dedicated to Norman Roux.

Artists featured: David Bowie, Dee Snider, KK’s priest, Def Leppard, Iced Earth, Foghat, Hawkwind, Saxon, Scorpions, L,A. Guns, Skid Row, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Seether, Reef, Rammstein, Böhse Onkelz, Demon, Hellyeah, Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Girish & the Chronicles, Jelusick, Dio, Guns ‘n’ Roses. Grand Funk Railroad, Accept, Avenged Sevenfold, Audioslave, ACDC, Phil Campbell & the Bastard Sons, ZZ Top, Roan Ash, Warren Zevon, Fire Horses, My Chemical Romance, Bruce Springsteen.

10 South Indian films we can’t wait to watch this year!

10 South Indian films we can’t wait to watch this year!
From Indian 2 to Viduthalai Part 2, 2024 is packed with big ticket South Indian releases and we can’t wait to watch them all. There was a time when regional film industries used to be confined to their respective states. But the ‘pan-India’ phenomena in recent years has elevated regional movies, particularly from South Indian industries, to receive national recognition. In such a light, language has become inconsequential and after all, great content has a universal language. In recent years, this has been confirmed by the success of movies such as Pushpa, RRR, KGF and many others which have taken the nation by storm. So it’s hardly surprising that in 2024, these regional film industries will continue to realise unique stories distinguished by grandeur, authenticity, cultural depth, and larger than life appeal. In today’s episode of List Hai Toh Hit Hai, we’ve filtered the most anticipated South Indian films of 2024 that you just can’t wait to watch. So get ready to mark your calendar now.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E51

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E51

This is a special episode.  The Story of Rock and Roll turned Six.  On 12 Dec 2017, the first-ever TSORR aired from the Mix 93.8 FM Studios in Midrand Johannesburg.  Six years later to the day, S6E51 aired live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 12 Dec 2023.  The world has changed, and my life has changed so it is good to know that the music has not.  The episode was a celebration of the bands and the songs that make the show what it is.  Thank you all for your support, wherever you are and whoever you are I am deeply grateful for your support.  I will continue to make sure that the show delivers the music that you have come to know it for years to come.

We skipped the Diabolical Challenge this week due to the birthday bash.  There were just too many bands and songs to recognize.  I had 9 hours of music (123 songs) that somehow ended up in a 3 hour 34 song show.

We made up for it with the Immortals feature where we needed the time.  The number 2112 is sacred to the show so to celebrate the 6-year anniversary on the exact date the show started 12 December i.e. 21 12 we took a listen to the title track of Rush’s masterpiece ‘2112’

Artists featured:  Sixx A.M., John Paul Young, Van Halen, Cold Chisel, Deep Purple, James Reyne, Scorpions, KISS, Joe Bonamassa, Rory Gallagher, Judas Priest, Dokken, Iron Maiden, Joe Jackson, The Boomtown rats, Audioslave, Matthew Good Band, Buckcherry, Danko Jones, ACDC, Foo Fighters, The Stranglers, The Clash, Rush, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Megadeth, Mötley Crüe, Hinder, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Lyzyrd Kyngz, Mötorhead, The Uninvited.

The Psychology of the British Raj & The British Empire - Review of RRR - Indian Film

The Psychology of the British Raj & The British Empire - Review of RRR - Indian Film

Review of RRR - Indian Film - The Psychology of the British Raj & The British Empire's Cruelty

Today I wanted to offer some reflections about the Indian Telugu film, RRR, directed by Rajamouli, featuring Ram Charam and NT Rama Rao Jr.

I watched this film at the weekend and today wanted to offer some reflections about the psychology of the British Raj which we see played out in the film.

The story of the film starts with the British Governor played by Ray Stevenson and his wife who buy a young girl from a village they are visiting. The village presume they are being paid for the singing, not for the girl and try to get the child back.

The girl has a protector who tries to rescue the girl, a man called Bheem, played by NT Rama Rao Jr.

The story shows his battle to get the girl back from the British whlie battling a policeman played by Ram Charam.

I was drawn to writing a review because of how the trauma and cruelty of the British Empire is potrayed in the film and how I feel it links into the education of the British especially boarding school.

I quote from Nick Duffell author of Wounded Leaders.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E29

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E29

Episode 29 of Season 6 went out at 19h00 on 20 July 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio.  It was unusual in that we had two interviews this week as opposed to the usual one.  We chatted to Jacques van der Merwe about ‘Let It Fall’ the brand-new single released by When Angels Come.  Catch this at around 1:30. The second interview is with Chaos Doctrine main Man Dr. D and it was a very cool chat we had before introducing their brand new track for the first time on the radio.  It is called 'One of My Bad Days' and it gets released tomorrow morning (Friday 21 July).

This week’s Immortals track featured ‘Cabo Wabo’ a track off Van Halen’s OU812 album.  From there we went to the Diabolical Challenge and checked out 4 albums from 1995.  The albums were:  ACDC – Ballbreaker, White Zombie – Astro Creep 2000, Ozzy Osbourne – Ozzmosis, and Oasis – (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?.  The tracks were 'Ballbreaker', 'Super Charger Heaven', 'Old L.A.', and 'Some Might Say' respectively  The view was as good as Ozzy and ACDC are they were not peaking in’95 whereas White Zombie and Oasis definitely were.  Oasis for the win.

Artists featured:  Iron Maiden, Accept, BlackØwl, Cinderella, Badlands, Godsmack, Drowning Pool, Jethro Tull, Scorpions, Dio, Chickenfoot, Green Day, Joe Jackson, The Clash, Slash, Q5, Smith / Kotzen Joel Hoekstra’s 13, Clutch, When Angels Came, Warrant, The Wildhearts, Tesla, Mastodon, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen, ACDC, White Zombie, Ozzy Osbourne, Oasis, Skid Row, Overkill, Chaos Doctrine, Def Leppard, Marvelous 3.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E19

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E19

S6E19 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 7 pm on 11 May 2023.  The show kicked off with Herman Frank and we settled into a hour of uptempo, driving rock and roll from the likes of Quiet Riot, Seether, Buckcherry and Rival Sons.  These last two bands mentioned had new tracks released so we took a listen to get a feel for the forthcoming albums.  Later in the show we continued with the goal of bringing you new SA artist releases.  This week we had a short interview with Liaan Horten of The Color Blew and we took a listen to their brand new track ‘Love In Space which was released about 10 hours' later on Friday 12 May,

The Ultimate Challenge for this episode looked at 4 albums from 1978 and what a year it was.  Van Halen – Van Halen, Judas Priest -  Stained Class, ACDC – Power Age, and Rainbow – Long Live Rock and Roll.  It went to the wire between ACDC and Van Halen but in the end, sanity prevailed and Van Halen took its rightful place as the greatest album of 1978 and probably the decade.

This week's Immortals track was Metallica's ‘The Day That Never Comes’ off the Death Magnetic album.  For the rest of the show, we fitted in US Punk (Anti-Flag), UK Punk (The Clash), and SA Rock (Cutting Jade, Van Coke Kartel, and Future Radio).  Things are tough in South Africa right now, we are up to 10 to 12 hours a day without power, so we used Foo Fighters to give us a bit of a boost with 'Times Like These'.  Hope you enjoy the episode, cheers until next time.

Artists featured:  Herman Frank, Drowning Pool, Quiet Riot, KilliT, Cutting Jade, Shinedown, Seether, Reef, Buckcherry, Rival Sons, Satellite Party & Perry Farrell, Extreme, Bush, The Cult, Bad Company, Doomsday Outlaw, Anti-Flag, Future Radio, Foo Fighters, Van Coke Cartel, The Color Blew, The Clash, Stone Sour, Machine Head, Metallica, Rainbow, ACDC, Judas Priest, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, Texas Hippie Coalition, Girish & The Chronicles, Sepultura, Savage, David Bowie, Parkway Drive

    Action Movies (Load, Aim, Shoot!)
Scott, Reese, and Chris discuss their homework from the last episode where they assigned great action movies/TV shows. On this episode the ColdBros pontificate on "what an action movie really is". They dive deep into their assignments of watching The Raid Redemption, and The Raid 2, The Terminal List, and RRR. Reese absolutely hated one of these assignments.... And Chris actually liked them! (I know, right?) The Bros get sidetracked by Reese getting a little lost in IMDB with his ADHD. The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E18

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E18

S6E18 of The Story of Rock and Radio Show kicked off on Star Wars Day i.e. May the Fourth, live on Rebel Rock radio at 7:00 PM show started off with the old favorites Judas Priest of the 1986 album Turbo.

There were some great pairings on this episode;  we checked out Sons of Apollo back to back with Bristol band Sons of Liberty, and we put Rush and Mastodon together and heard  'Subdivisions’ and ‘The Beast’ respectively.  We also went to Germany and played Accept (winner of last week's Ultimate Challenge) and Rammstein who has been neglected on TSORR of late.

We looked at 1986 for the Ultimate Challenge.  The UC is a look at four albums from a particular year.  This week it was Van Halen - 5150, Metallica - Master of Puppets, Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet, and Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time.  On the Immortals we featured a track by Steve Winwood off the amazing album Arc of the Diver.  The track was 'Night Train', and as I recall Steve played all the instruments himself.

We had a big scoop this week where we got to play another track off the brand new (Released 5 May) Deadline album Vitriol Inc, we heard 'Codebreaker' and the other big news was we played Philistine's debut track called 'Blue Train'.  Philistine is Dean Smith and Marq Vas, both stalwarts of SA Metal through bands like Metalmorphosis and Ragnarok.  Theo Crous produced this masterpiece.

Artists featured:  Judas Priest, Glenn Hughes, Ted Nugent, UFO, Status Quo, Q5, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Nazareth, Jimi Hendrix, Rush, Mastodon, Sons of Apollo, Sons of Liberty, Accept Rammstein, Shinedown, Soundgarden, ACDC, Airbourne, Oasis, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, KISS, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Steve Winwood, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Philistine, Deadline, Overkill, Dave Hause

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E16

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E16

S6E16 went out live on Rebel Rock radio at 7 pm on 20 April 2023.  It was jam-packed with new stuff including Metallica, Overkill, Dave Hause, and Ian Hunter.  The highlight of the new releases was a track called ‘#Rebel’ from Extreme, Nuno Bettencourt is on fire on the tracks released so far. The album is to be called Six and there are 3 tracks out so far.  We also had a surprise release from the Foo Fighters.  The band is calling it a new beginning.  According to Rolling Stone; The album arrives “after a year of staggering losses, personal introspection, and bittersweet remembrances,” the album’s listing page notes. “A brutally honest and emotionally raw response to everything Foo Fighters have endured recently, But Here We Are is a testament to the healing powers of music, friendship, and family.”  Following on from the tragic death of Taylor Hawkins the Foos have regrouped and united through music.  No one is saying who drummed on the track, but it does sound like Dave to me. I still hope Rufus Taylor will get the gig.

The Ultimate Challenge was way more difficult than normal because 1976 was so strong.  We had 6 albums, Thin Lizzy – Jailbreak, Kiss - Destroyer, Judas Priest – Sad Wings of Destiny, Rainbow – Rising, Rush - 2112, and Boston – Boston.  What do you do when you are supposed to pick one out of four and you can't even pick four from six?  I played all 6 and broke my own rules.  The popular choice was Jailbreak, personally Sad Wings and Destroyer are very special to me.  The general view from the listeners was that 1976 was phenomenal and these 6 albums just prove it.

We had some TSORR oddities and called back the past with Madness and Adam and the Ants, both went down well.  The Immortals this week featured Creedance Clearwater Revival and their 7:39 Track ‘Keep on Chooglin’.  This track gets into your head, the Doctor says it normally takes a week to stop singing 'Keep On Chooglin' to yourself.

This was one of the most enjoyable shows in a long time, with good vibes on the airwaves and cool people to share it with, Ed’s dead baby, Ed’s dead, Long live Nuno.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E15

Season 6 Episode 15 aired live at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 13 April 2023.  The show kicked off with Ozzy Osbourne’s 'Miracle Man' and then blasted through some fast-paced hi-octane rock/metal.  There were some excellent new tracks on the show; Buckcherry with ‘Let’s Get Wild’ off the soon-to-be-released Volume 10, Greta Van Fleet with 'Meet The Master', and Ian Hunter with Stone Temple Pilots' Eric Kretz, and the De Leo Brothers, and a track called Pavlov’s Dog.

The Immortals track this week was ‘Cold Gin’ off KISS – Alive.  It is KISS at their best and shows just how important Peter Criss and Ace Frehley were to the sound of the band.  The 5 min interview with Jessy Switchblade of Deadline fame clocked in at about 8 min, Jessy is very easy to talk to and as always has plenty to say.

This week's Ultimate Challenge looked at 1985 and the four albums were:  ZZ Top – Afterburner, ACDC – Fly On The Wall, John Mellencamp – Scarecrow, and Megadeth – Killing Is My Business......And Business Is Good!  In between we heard from the likes of Doomsday Outlaw, Jetboy, Tesla, The Black Crowes, Iron Maiden, Saxon, and Judas Priest.

Artists featured:  Ozzy Osbourne, Disturbed, Godsmack, Saxon, Coverdale / Page, Buckcherry, Danko Jones, Airbourne, Drowning Pool, Halestorm, The Donnas, Doomsday Outlaw, Whisky Myers, Greta Van Fleet, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, The Black Crowes, Tesla, Audioslave, Alice In Chains, Ian Hunter, The Rolling Stones, Anthrax, Jetboy, KISS, Deadline, ACDC, ZZ Top, John Mellencamp, Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Bullet For My Valentine, Kid Rock, The Halo Effect, Parkway Drive.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E12

Episode 12 of Season 6 went out live at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 23 March 2023.  Guns ‘n’ Roses were first up with 14 Years, closely followed by Great White and a track off Hooked called ‘South Bay Cities’.  Megadeth’s ‘Victory’ off Youthanasia made it a bit heavier but them we mellowed out again with Free and a track called ‘Heartbreaker’.  We stayed mellow with Gov’t Car's 'Kings Highway' and then picked up the pace with Danko Jones and Van Halen.

We got heavy with Annihilator and spent some time discussing the guitarist Jeff Waters and marvelling at just how great and overlooked he is.  There was also new stuff from Rival Sons and Buck Cherry.  Both albums are to be released in April from what I have heard.

The Jackson Colt interview was really cool, I loved talking to him and the new track 'Strangers' boasts an amazing solo, which is worth focusing on.  SA Rock is alive and well, we continued with another track from Second Chapter the new release from Jack Hammer Band, then Wonderboom with the uber classic 'Never Ever Ever Ever'.  From there we went deep on the lyrics with Arapaho and Wicked Wonder.

This week's Immortals track was 'Machine Gun' recorded Live at the Filmore East.  According to Classic Rock, it is Joe Satriani’s favorite Hendrix track, who are we to argue with Joe.  The Ultimate Challenge between Queen - Night At the Opera, Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti, Kiss - Alive! and Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run ended up with Led Zeppelin getting a few more votes than the others.  The 20th century me would have taken Kiss but the 21st century me picked Born To Run.  The highlight of the show was taking a listen to the brand new Extreme track called 'Rise'.  A lot of people (Rick Beato, Phil X, Steve Lukather, James Daubeney:-)) are talking about Nuno Bettencourts' solo on this.  It is so good we played it twice.  The end of the show was nice and heavy playing out with The Agonist, Arch Enemy, Hell Yeah, and Malevolence.

Artists featured:  Guns ‘n’ Roses, Great White, Deep Purple, Megadeth, Edguy, Free, Gov’t Mule, Danko Jones, Van Halen, Annihlator, Buckcherry, Billy Idol, Greta Van Fleet, Rival Sons, Bernie Tormé, Girish and the Chronicles, Tesla, Opink Floyd, ACDC, Jackson Colt, Jack Hammer Band, Wonderboom, Arapaho, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, KISS, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, Extreme, Joe Bonamassa, The Agonist, Arch Enemy, Hell Yeah, Kid Rock, Malevolence

Vocal for Local: The Booming Dubbing Industry

Dubbing has come a long way since its introduction in Western cinema, but after many years, we witnessed India and cinema in particular generating a fortune from it, with movies like Bahubali and KGF making a fortune. However, this dramatic surge was highlighted in the pandemic, where everyone binged watched this type of entertainment. But what is driving this sector, how large is it in total, and why is it now traveling across India?

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E11

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E11

Season 6 Episode 11 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 16 March 2023.  Badlands with Jake E. Lee and the late Ray Gillan got us out the blocks with a track called ‘Devil’s Stomp’.  From there we had some more devils courtesy of Chickenfoot and a track called ‘Different Devil’ off Chickenfoot III.  It was pretty much full-bore rock and roll for the first hour with bands like Godsmack, Stone Sour, and Marilyn Manson.  In particular, Stone Sour with ‘Do Me a Favour’ and Godsmack off their brand new album Lighting Up The Sky and a track called “Red White and Blue made a good pairing.

By request from Ash a brand new listener we had Shinedown with Breaking Inside’ and then Rival Sons with ‘Burn Down Los Angeles’.  From there is went a bit off the rails and served as a reminder that TSORR is not for young children as demonstrated by, Buckcherry’s ‘Somebody F*****d With Me’, and Metallica’s cover of The Anti Nowhere League's infamous  'So What’.  Then we went back to TSORR roots with ‘Samurai’ off Assault Attack from The Michael Schenker Group and then a track from Scorpions which made it a Schenker family affair.  Pretty much the only time you can get the Schenker bros together is if you play their songs back-to-back.  Sad ☹.

For this week’s Ultimate Challenge, we looked at 1987:  the four albums featured were from Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Guns ‘n Roses, and Whitesnake.  We had a great 4-minute interview with Ryno Theron, vocalist and guitarist from Truth Decayed, and followed this by we playing their brand-new track ‘Death By Design’.  It was a hell of a busy show;  we played more SA music with a brand-new track from Jack Hammer Band who are flying the flag for our beloved Piet Botha, then Blue Scream featuring my good friend Roger Kaye on vocals along with Robin Gallagher and Tully McCully.  This week's Immortals was 13 min long, check it out, ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ off Powerslave sounded amazing.  Iron Maiden are something else.  I recall hearing Phil Wright play the whole track back in 1984 when the album was released.  We wrapped up with Jethro Tull’s Aqualung and Volbeat’s ‘Shotgun Blues’, especially for Ian and Hardus, and said cheers with Bloodstone by the mighty Judas Priest.

Artists featured:  Badlands, Chickenfoot, Cinderella, Type O Negative, Marilyn Manson, Stone Sour, Godsmack, L.A. Guns, Rival Sons, Shinedown, Buckcherry, Metallica, Ramones, Michael Schenker Group, Scorpions, Dio, Girish and the Chronicles, Dead City Ruins, Danny Worsnop, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Whitesnake, Truth Decayed, Frank Zappa, Blue Scream, Jack Hammer Band, Sheryl Crow, Iron Maiden, Jethro Tull, Volbeat, Judas Priest.
