The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E6

Welcome to The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Season 7 episode 6 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 8 Feb 2024.  As always, the show consisted of 3 hours of Rock and Metal and covered all sorts of artists from late 1960 through to albums released this week.  You should find something amongst this lot, see 'Artists featured' below (in order of appearance).

The Immortals track this week came from Blue Öyster Cult, a track called Shooting Shark off The Revolution By Night album.  Buck Dhara on guitar never disappoints.

The Diabolical Challenge this week looked at the letter ‘F’.  As with last week's 'E', this one was not easy either, not a lot of bands starting with ‘F’.  Foreigner got bumped for Fokofpolisiekar which may not make sense to international listeners.  All I can say is that if you read the book, The Story of Rock and Roll, things will be clearer.  Fokofpolisiekar were a legendary live band and a huge part of my life in the early ’00s.   We looked at the following albums and played a track off each:

    Free – Fire and Water

Five Finger Death Punch – American Capitalist

    Fokofpolisiekar – Lugsteurings

    Foo Fighters – Wasting Light

Artists featured:  The Jam, Motörhead, Night Ranger, the Temperance Movement, Phil Campbell, Roan Van As, Tom Petty, Iced Earth, hell Fire, Kiss, L.A. Guns, Massive Wagons, Circus of Power, Doomsday Outlaw, Halestorm, The Distillers, The Wildhearts, Iron maiden, Judas Priest, Nevada beach, Tokyo Blade, Tony Martin,  Roadkill Ghost Choir, Volbeat, W.A.S.P., Blue Öyster Cult, Free, Five Finger Death Punch, Fokofpolisiekar, Foo Fighters, Extreme, Deep Purple, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Avenged Sevenfold, ACDC

The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E3

S7E3 aired live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 18 Jan 2024.

It ended up being one of my favourite shows ever.  The end was gloriously spontaneous, and the people tuned in were just awesome.  Going round the world in 40 min at the end of the show was amazing, unplanned and a great way to say goodnight.

The Immortals track in the episode was Rainbow’s ‘Light in the Black’.  This comes off the Rising album, one of the greatest albums to come out of the ‘70s

This weeks Diabolical Challenge looked at four bands beginning with the letter ‘C’.  The four albums were Chickenfoot III, London Calling, Blast Tyrant, and Electric:

     The tracks played were.

    Chickenfoot – Alright, alright

The Cult – Love Removal Machine

    The Clash – London Calling

Clutch – The Mob Goes Wild

Episode 2 of Season 7 aired live at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 11 Jan 2024.

The Immortals feature this week is from Rush, a track called By-tor and the Snow Dog off their second album Fly By Night.  This was the first album they made after Neal Peart joined the band after the resignation of John Rutsey.  The track consists of 8 parts and gave the world the first glimpse of the direction Rush were taking going forward.  There was a little technical glitch after Yngwie J. Malmsteen, it comes back after about 45 seconds so just jump it or wait it out, apologies for that.

The Diabolical Challenge checked out 4 bands found under ‘B’ in the record collection.  We took a listen to tracks off Mob Rules, Badlands, Nebraska, and Boston:

    Black Sabbath – Mob Rules

    Boston –

Badlands – Dancing on the Edge

Bruce Springsteen  - Reason to Believe

Artists Featured:  Hanoi Rocks, Joe Bonamassa, Krokus, Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons, Ozzy Osbourne, Danko Jones, Halford, Iron Maiden, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Drowning Pool, Alice In Chains, Beartooth, Coheed & Cambria, Ryan Adams, Simon & Garfunkel, Black Star Riders, Yngwie J. The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E1

The Story of Rock and Roll: S7E1

Welcome to the 7th season of The Story of Rock and Roll radio Show.  S7E1 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 4 Jan 2024.  We kicked off with David Bowie and It’s No Game (Part 1) which feels like the perfect song for where we find ourselves in 2024.

The Diabolical Challenge has had a make-over.  In Season 6 I presented 4 albums from a specific year and listeners got to vote on which one they would choose if they could only take one.  Well with 52 shows in 2023, we ran out of years.  The new Diabolical Challenge looks at things alphabetically.  We will do two cycles A – Z to get us through to the end of Season 7.  Starting at 'A" we had:

ACDC – Flick of the Switch

Avenged Sevenfold – City of Evil

Accept – Balls to the Wall and

    Audioslave – Audioslave

The Immortals track, a track over 7 minutes long that never gets airplay but is an amazing example of a band or artist at their best stays as is and we kicked off the year with Grand Funk Railroad and a track called ‘Inside Looking Out’ and that one was especially dedicated to Norman Roux.

Artists featured: David Bowie, Dee Snider, KK’s priest, Def Leppard, Iced Earth, Foghat, Hawkwind, Saxon, Scorpions, L,A. Guns, Skid Row, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Seether, Reef, Rammstein, Böhse Onkelz, Demon, Hellyeah, Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Girish & the Chronicles, Jelusick, Dio, Guns ‘n’ Roses. Grand Funk Railroad, Accept, Avenged Sevenfold, Audioslave, ACDC, Phil Campbell & the Bastard Sons, ZZ Top, Roan Ash, Warren Zevon, Fire Horses, My Chemical Romance, Bruce Springsteen.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E51

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E51

This is a special episode.  The Story of Rock and Roll turned Six.  On 12 Dec 2017, the first-ever TSORR aired from the Mix 93.8 FM Studios in Midrand Johannesburg.  Six years later to the day, S6E51 aired live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 12 Dec 2023.  The world has changed, and my life has changed so it is good to know that the music has not.  The episode was a celebration of the bands and the songs that make the show what it is.  Thank you all for your support, wherever you are and whoever you are I am deeply grateful for your support.  I will continue to make sure that the show delivers the music that you have come to know it for years to come.

We skipped the Diabolical Challenge this week due to the birthday bash.  There were just too many bands and songs to recognize.  I had 9 hours of music (123 songs) that somehow ended up in a 3 hour 34 song show.

We made up for it with the Immortals feature where we needed the time.  The number 2112 is sacred to the show so to celebrate the 6-year anniversary on the exact date the show started 12 December i.e. 21 12 we took a listen to the title track of Rush’s masterpiece ‘2112’

Artists featured:  Sixx A.M., John Paul Young, Van Halen, Cold Chisel, Deep Purple, James Reyne, Scorpions, KISS, Joe Bonamassa, Rory Gallagher, Judas Priest, Dokken, Iron Maiden, Joe Jackson, The Boomtown rats, Audioslave, Matthew Good Band, Buckcherry, Danko Jones, ACDC, Foo Fighters, The Stranglers, The Clash, Rush, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Megadeth, Mötley Crüe, Hinder, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Lyzyrd Kyngz, Mötorhead, The Uninvited.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E50

S6E50 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 14 Dec 2023.  People are winding down now, it has been a long tough year for most, so thanks very much for the support for Season 6 of TSORR and I wish you all an awesome festive season.

The Immortals Track tonight was something different.  Last week we played a track by Roger Kaye.  Roger was a very good friend of mine; I met him at high school and he was one of the most talented musicians I have ever known.  He was a multi-instrumentalist and did some amazing stuff.  All this can be found in my book The Story of Rock and Roll so I won’t go into any detail, but I mentioned a track he did for his father.  It is Prelude in Dm Symphony no 40 in Gm (K550), 1st movement Molto Allegro.  Music written by Mozart and interpreted by Roger on electric guitar.  He worked it all out instrument by instrument and the results are amazing.  This is a home recording that took him a few months to do.

The Diabolical Challenge featured 4 albums from 1999:

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication

Blink 182 – Enema of the State

Live – The Distance to Here

    Buckcherry – Buckcherry

Artists featured: Boston, Ratt, Dio, Steel Panther, ZZ Top, The Screaming Jets, Rose Tattoo, The Dead Daisies, Kid Rock, Metallica, Taylor Road, ACDC, Cold Chisel, Led Zeppelin, Greta Van Fleet, Rush, Threshold, The Stranglers, The Clash, Pixies, Phil Campbell & the Bastard Sons, Motörhead, Scorpions, Accept, Roger Kaye, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, LIVE, Blink 182, Buckcherry, Jelusick, Skid Row, Halestorm, The Pretty Reckless, Piet Botha & Jack Hammer, The Burning, Temple of the Dog

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E49

S6E49 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio on 7 Dec 2023 at 19h00.  Fourth last show of 2023, this year has flown.  We kicked off at the start of the alphabet and checked out Alter Bridge off the Fortress.  It was a great way to start, a nice build-up to 3 hours of rock and metal.

This week's Immortal slot went to the Mightly Judas Priest with ‘Blood Red Skies’ off Ram It Down

The Diabolical Challenge took in the year 1970.  Back in those days there were only about 20 releases to choose from but man, the quality of those twenty !  Here they are:

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E45

S6E45 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 8 Nov 2023.  Check out artists featured below to get a flavour of what we played.  The South African music was covered with two brand new tracks from Vaughn Prangley and Jackson Colt.

There is a bit of confusion at 43:56 where I thought the mic was off but it wasn't and then turned it off and did the bit again because I didn't know what we had captured.  The joys of live radio.

This week's Immortals track was Johnny Was by Stiff Little Fingers and for the Diabolical Challenge we looked at 1968.

The Beatles – The White Album

    Jimi Hendrix – Electric Ladyland

    Jeff Beck - Truth

Artists featured:  Slash, Seether, Herman Frank, Thundermother, The Pretty Reckless, Great White, Sons of Liberty, Judas Priest, Burn the Priest, The Sweet, The Temperance Movement, W.A.S.P., Whiskey Myers, Texas Hippie Coalition, The Gaslight Anthem, Tin Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, Union, The Dead Daisies, Volbeat, Dirty Honey, Alice Cooper, Hell Fire, Metallica, Tremonti, Stiff Little Fingers, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Triumph, Rush, Vaughn Prangley, Jackson Colt, Airbourne, Tom Petty, Kid Rock

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E44

S6E44 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 2 November 2023.  It was nice to be broadcasting live again after a week away.  It was one of those shows where we just ran out of time. Highlights included new tracks by Green Day and Blink 182.  We also looked at John Corabi’s work and I discussed his awesome Biography ‘Horseshoes and Hand Grenades.

This episode's Diabolical Challenge looked at 4 albums from 1996:

    Marilyn Manson – Antichrist Superstar

In Flames – The Jesters Race

Soundgarden – Down on the Upside

Zakk Wylde – Book of Shadows

This week The Immortal's track was off A Night at the Opera by Queen.  It's a track that got overshadowed by 'Bohemian Rapsody' and it totally show cases what Queen were all about.  I am of course talking about 'The Prophets Song'.

Artists featured:  Hell Yeah, Led Zeppelin, Greta Van Fleet, Walking Papers, Danko Jones, Dirty Honey, Trouble, Loverboy, Triumph, Type O Negative, James Reyne, Jimmy Barnes, Bryan Adams, Joe Jackson, Green Day, Blink 182, Mötley Crüe, The Dead Daisies, Warrant, Chickenfoot, Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher, Joe Walsh, Tesla, Queen, Marilyn Manson, Sound Garden, In Flames, Zakk Wylde, Kid Rock, Alice Cooper, Windowpane, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Jasper Dan

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E43

Episode 43 went out pre-recorded as I was in the Maldives.  The show aired at 19h00 on 26 October 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio.  There is a great interview with Cindy Louise and super talented South African lady working out of The Netherlands.  We got a scoop by playing her brand new track Innocence which was released on Friday morning 27 Oct

The Immortals for this episode was Iron Maiden's 'Blood Brothers'

The Diabolical Challenge looked at 4 albums from 2016:

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E42

S6E42 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 19 October 2023.  It was a tough one, those of you who listen regularly to TSORR will have heard me mention Athol Curtis on many occasions.  Athol has been a fan of TSORR since it started on Mix FM on 21 12 2017.  We were musical brothers and I considered him the TSORR Musical Director due to his many suggested tracks for the shows.  Athol sadly passed away Tuesday night 17 Oct.  His family and friends are devastated at the loss of this amazing human being.  Athol was born to rock, he was a uniquely charismatic individual, full of life and energy and always supporting and helping everyone around him.  He was a party animal with a heart of gold.  He was the 'effervescent antidepressant'.

This entire show was dedicated to Athol.  I wasn't sure how it would go, and I tried to keep it upbeat and focused on the good times and the power of the music rather than the sadness.  I will miss him forever and I hope I have done him justice in these 3 hours.  All of these tracks were favourites of ours and in most cases, I have vivid memories of discussing them with him over the last 6 years.  Rest in Peace my brother I will miss you

Foo Fighters, Judas Priest, KISS, L.A. Rats. Audioslave, Type O Negative, Shinedown, Skid Row, Buckcherry, Danko Jones, Ozzy Osbourne, Motörhead, Billy Idol, Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones, ACDC, Def Leppard, Rammstein, Böhse Onklez, The Stranglers, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, The Clash, The Pretty Reckless, Halestorm, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Scorpios, Quiet Riot, Cinderella, Mötley Crüe, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Hinder, Kid Rock, The Distillers, The Cult, Tom Petty

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E40

Epidose 40 of Season 6 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 5 October 2023.  It has been six long years since we lost Tom Petty, hard to believe, such a tragedy.  Epidose was a typo but it is quite cool so I will keep it instead of Episode, hopefully not getting Alzheimer's, I have only been retired for a month, seems a bit quick.  The show kicked off with Airbourne and a track called Raise the Flag.  And that is what we did,  raised the flag for rock and roll for 180 minutes.   Check out the artists featured list below to see who we played, it’s sequential if you are looking for something in particular.

The Immortals this week was taken care of by Jethro Tull and a live version of Aqualung off Bursting Out – Live

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E38

Episode 38 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio on 21 September 2023 at 19h00 sharp.  It was as one of our Engineering Managers used to say “All stations dogs” which means.... well we never knew what it meant.  The show built up nicely from a fairly gentle U2 opener to the sheer power of Orbit Culture and Philistine at the end of the show.  Check out the Artists featured to see what we had in between.

The Immortals track this week was War Pigs, the Black Sabbath classic, there was no argument about its choice.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E37

Episode 37 of Season 6 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 14 September 2023.  Once again, the airwaves were cooking thanks to The Rock Doctor’s Rock Power Hour Turbo edition that precedes The Story of Rock and Roll radio Show.  We kicked off with Kiss, basically the band most responsible for TSORR as it was the band that melted my brain 12-year-old brain and changed everything.  That story is in the book The Story of Rock and Roll which you can find on Amazon as a Kindle edition.

We had a good selection as always, pretty much something for everyone with a build-up to the heavy stuff at the end.  Check the artists featured to see who got a look in.

The Immortals slot was ably filled by Pink Floyd.  We took a listen to Sorrow off the delicate Sound Of Thunder album.  For this week's Diabolical Challenge we looked at 2006 and the four albums were:

Iron Maiden – A Matter of Life & Death

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E35

S6E35 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 31 August 2023.  It was an auspicious occasion, my last day of work at a company I ran for the last 10 years.  As a result, there is a thinly veiled theme of moving on, changes, new beginnings, disappearances etc, etc.  This is demonstrated by the 3 opening tracks, ‘This is How I Disappear, ‘Let Me Out’ and ‘Gotta Get Away’.  Check out the Artists Featured below for the order of play.

This week’s Immortals Track featured Thin Lizzy off Live and Dangerous with ‘Still In Love With You.

The Diabolical Challenge we went back to 1969 and checked out:

The Who – Tommy (Pinball Wizard)

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bayou Country (Born on the Bayou)

Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin II (Heartbreaker)

The Rolling Stones – Let It Bleed (Gimme Shelter)

Artists featured: My Chemical Romance, The Knack, The Offspring, Foo Fighters, Tesla, W.A.S.P., Chickenfoot, Iron Maiden, Buckcherry, Paul Stanley, Ramones, The Clash, The Jam, Vandenberg, Nita Strauss & David Draiman, Adrenaline Mob, The Angels, Jet, Rory Gallagher, Butchering The Beatles, Volbeat, Steve Stevens, Theory of a Deadman, Thin Lizzy, the Who, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Marvelous 3, David Bowie, Johnathan Martin, John Mellencamp, In Flames, Leonard Cohen.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E32

Episode 32 of Season 6 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 10 August 2023.  We kicked off with Amanda Palmer, you heard right, something different for a change.  From there it was all Quiet Riot, ACDC, and the usual stuff, and by that, you can have a look at the Artists Featured List below.

This week in The Immortals slot, tracks over seven minutes long that really showcase what a band can do but seldom gets airplay.  This week we gave Guns ‘n’ Roses the slot.  They have so many that qualify, e.g. November Rain and Estranged but we took a listen to Civil War.

The Diabolical Challenge focused on 2010.  There were good efforts from Scorpions, Black Label Society, Godsmack, Parkway Drive, and Slash but we had a choice of:

Airbourne – No Guts, No Glory

    Accept – Time Machine

Iron Maiden – The Final Frontier

    Avenged Sevenfold – Nightmare.

We said a sad farewell to Rodriguez who passed away this week at 81.  Rodriguez is a legend to many of us who grew up in the ‘70s and ‘80s.  A singer-songwriter the likes of which come around a few times a generation.  I let him have the final word.

Artists featured:  Amanda Palmer, Quiet Riot, ACDC, Rammstein, Seether, Texas Hippie Coalition, Michael Monroe, Buckcherry, Five Finger Death Punch, Nita Strauss and Anders Friden, Thunder, Ratt, the Cult, Thundermother, The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, UK Subs, Gov’t Mule, Robbie Robertson, Ayron Jones, Greta Van Fleet, Bewitcher, Godsmack, Device, Firehouse, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Airbourne, Accept, Iron maiden, Avenged Sevenfold, Marvelous 3, Linkin park, Scorpions, Black Label Society, Rodriguez, Piet Botha, Rodriguez (RIP)

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E30

S6E30 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio 7 pm sharp on 27 July 2023.  There was plenty to celebrate, it’s been a long week and the cast members of TSORR Central were all partying up a storm at TSORR musical Director Ahol’s place.  I was not able to join them sadly because I had to do the soundtrack for their party.

We kicked off with Cinderella Night Songs seeing as that is what we were listening to.  It was one of the most fun shows yet mainly due to the wonderful participation from people of the TSORR Central Whatsapp group.  If you want to join find TSORR on Facebook or Twitter or let me know on thestoryofrockandroll1@gmail.com

The Immortals feature this week featured a band called The Outlaws and all nearly 10 minutes of Green Grass and High Tides.  It is a great bit of music, guitar lovers, and Southern Rock dudes this one’s for you.

Episode 28 of Season 6 went out live at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 13 July 2023.  Following on from The Rock Doctor’s Rock Power Play Turbo show it was necessary to keep the pace.  It has been freezing in Johannesburg this week with Temperatures getting down below zero and we actually had snow which happens about once every 20 years.  It made sense to kick off with The Boomtown Rats ‘Wind Chill Factor Minus Zero’.

The big news this week was an interview with the multitalented SA Rock legend Mark Haze.  Mark had some kind words to say about the old days when I met him at the very, very start of his musical career.  Our 5 minute interview went on a bit longer and would have gone even longer if we didn’t call time in the interest of the music.  We were incredibly privileged to hear Gareth Haze’s new track ‘Home’.  Mark is busy working with Gareth on his debut album, really looking forward to hearing it in a few months' time.

The Immortals section of the show featured Dire Straits and the opening track of their third album Making Movies.  The track is of course ‘Tunnel of Love’, it is an amazing preview of how Mark Knopfler was developing as a songwriter and showed the path to their mega-selling Love Over Gold album.

This week's Ultimate Challenge was a problem.  We looked at 1983 and started with 6 albums.  I managed to whittle it down during the week by leaving out Ozzy Osbourne’s Bark At The Moon and Mötley Crüe’s Shout At The Devil.  This left us with Def Leppard – Pyromania, Iron Maiden – Piece of Mind, Dio – Holy Diver, and Metallica – Kill ‘Em All.  So very hard, Pyromania sold the most by far, Holy Diver is one of the most beloved debut albums of all time, and Kill ‘Em All changed the face of metal forever.  It also marks the point where the Ultimate Challenge ended.  Not the concept but the name, it is now known as The Diabolical Challenge.

Artists featured:  The Boomtown Rats, Skid Row, Ratt, U.D.O., Buckcherry, Extreme, Mammoth WVH, Joel Hoekstra, Disturbed, Shinedown, James Reyne, Cold Chisel, Rory Gallagher, Billy F. Gibbons, The Black Cat Bones, Ignite, Seether, Godsmack, Gareth Haze with Mark Haze, 12th Avenue, Megadeth, Dire Straits, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Dio, Metallica, Butch Walker, David Bowie, The Clash, Tom Petty, Wolfmother, Badlands, winery Dogs, Greta Van Fleet

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E27

S6E27 went out live at 7 pm on Thursday 76 July 1023 on Rebel Rock Radio.  It was a pleasure to pick up from where the Rock Doctor left off.  It is a great pleasure to welcome Mario to Rebel Rock Radio and he set a perfect platform for the show.

This week’s Ultimate Challenge was from the year 1974, the albums were Queen – Queen II, David Bowie – Diamond Dogs, UFO – Phenomenon, and The Rolling Stones – It’s Only Rock and Roll

We had new tracks from Mammoth WVH and Therapy?  Wolfgang Van Halen apparently used Eddies original Frankenstrat and one of the Marshalls he used on Van Halen 1.  So happy Wolfie has taken hold of the flame.

The Immortals this week paid tribute to all our friends in the USA and we wished them an awesome Independence Day earlier this week.  To celebrate we played Bruce Springsteen’s 4th of July, Ashbury Park (Sandy) off Live '75 - '85, one of the best live albums ever made imho.

We also had a short interview with Truth Decayed’s front man Ryno Theron and played 'Vicious Circles' off their brand new EP Faded Visions II

It was a great little show and we had some fun, thanks to those who tuned in a contributed with requests and comments.
