The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E46

S6E46 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 16 Nov 2023.  We kicked off with Megadeth and that strange coincidence whereby both Metallica and Megadeth independent of each other used the children’s rhythm “Now I lay me down to sleep”.  Check out 'Artists featured' to see who was played and whereabouts in the show.  It was a pretty chaotic show, just like the old days, with lots of technical problems and lots of laughs.

The Immortals track was a toss-up between Judas Priest and Joe Bonamassa

The Diabolical Challenge this week looked at 4 albums from 2008:

The Gaslight Anthem – The ’59 Sound

Volbeat – Guitar Gangsters and Cadillac Blood

    Metallica – Death Magnetic

Guns ‘n’ Roses – Chinese Democracy

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E35

S6E35 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 31 August 2023.  It was an auspicious occasion, my last day of work at a company I ran for the last 10 years.  As a result, there is a thinly veiled theme of moving on, changes, new beginnings, disappearances etc, etc.  This is demonstrated by the 3 opening tracks, ‘This is How I Disappear, ‘Let Me Out’ and ‘Gotta Get Away’.  Check out the Artists Featured below for the order of play.

This week’s Immortals Track featured Thin Lizzy off Live and Dangerous with ‘Still In Love With You.

1980 - June: “The Blues Brothers Original Soundtrack”

1980 - June: “The Blues Brothers Original Soundtrack”

The Blues Brothers Original Soundtrack is a powerhouse collection of rhythm and blues that captures the essence of the iconic film.  It features a blend of classic blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll performed by legendary artists including Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Cab Calloway.

The Blues Brothers originated as a musical comedy act created by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi on the sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live” in the late 1970's.  Inspired by their shared love for blues and R&B music, Aykroyd and Belushi created fictional characters, Jake and Elwood Blues, as their alter egos.  The act gained popularity, leading to the release of their self-titled debut album in 1978 and eventually to the creation of the Blues Brothers motion picture in 1980.

In the film, parolee Jake Blues is joined by his blood brother Elwood Blues on a “mission from God” to save the Catholic orphanage in which they were raised by reuniting their band and raising the $5000.00 for the property tax bill.  Their quest brings them to a number of characters played by iconic artists including Cab Calloway and James Brown.  The resulting soundtrack stands as a testament to the enduring power of blues music and left an indelible mark on both the film and music industry.

John Lynch dons his suit and dark sunglasses to bring us this feature.

    Minnie the Moocher
Cab Calloway originally presented Minnie the Moocher back in 1931, and reprises the song for this film.  Calloway was a regular performer at the Cotton Club in Harlem, and a popular vocalist of the swing era.  Calloway plays Curtis in the film, a father figure and mentor to the Blues Brothers, and performs this song as a warm-up to the concert.

    Jailhouse Rock
As the movie ends with Jake and Elwood back in prison after successfully paying off the tax bill for the orphanage.  The band plays Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock" for the inmates as the credits roll.  Jake Blues (Belushi) takes lead on this upbeat number.

    Think
Aretha Franklin covers her own song as Mrs. Murphy, trying to persuade her husband Matt Murphy to not join the band.  Franklin had a lot of difficulty lip synching the song and would have preferred to just sing it live.  The Blues Brothers join her on this cover.

    Gimme Some Lovin'
The Blues Brothers cover this piece originally performed by the Spencer Davis Group and made famous by Steve Winwood.  While the song was a top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, in the film it gets a decidedly cooler reception in the honky tonk bar in which it is performed.

    ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:

Lookin' for Love by Johnny Lee (from the motion picture “Urban Cowboy”)
With the decline of disco, crossover country & western hits became popular.  John Travolta starred in this movie which capitalized on the popularity of country music.

    STAFF PICKS:

Train in Vain (Stand By Me) by the Clash
Bruce brings us the third single from the Clash's third album, “London Calling.”  This was a double album, and a post-punk turn by the group.  The song was originally intended to be a giveaway flexi single, but was put on the album at the last minute when that deal fell through.  Mick Jones wrote and sings lead on this song, inspired by his tumultuous relationship with Stiltz guitarist Viv Albertine.

Free Me Big by Roger Daltrey
Wayne features the front man for the Who in a solo effort written by Argent guitarist Russ Ballard.  The song is on Daltrey's 1980 solo album “McVicar” It also appears on the soundtrack for the movie "McVicar" in which Daltrey plays John McVicar, an inmate in prison for a number of bank robberies.  The other members of the Who play on this song as uncredited musicians.

We Live for Love by Pat Benatar
Rob's staff pick is performed by Benatar, but it is often confused for a Blondie song.  It is a single from Benatar's debut album, “In the Heat of the Night,” and was written by Neil Giraldo, Benatar's then-guitarist and now-husband (and still guitarist).  It was the leading track from side two.

Ride Like the Wind by Christopher Cross
Lynch's staff pick went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, held out of the number 1 slot by Blondie's “Call Me.”  It is Cross's debut single from his Grammy winning 1979 self-titled album.  Cross dedicated the song to Lowell George, formerly of the band Little Feat, who had died in 1979.  Michael McDonald is easy to identify on backing vocals.

    NOVELTY TRACK:

    Turning Japanese by the Vapors
Songwriter and Vapors lead singer David Fenton says this is all the cliches about angst and youth and turning into something you didn't expect to.  This new wave song went to number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Musical Odyssey of Ted Carroll - Thin Lizzy, Rock On Record Store and Chiswick Records

Join me for an incredible conversation with the legendary Ted Carroll as we journey through his 60 plus-year music career. From his start in the early 50s, listening to jazz and discovering Rock and Roll, to managing the band Skid Row, which included the talented Gary Moore, Ted's experiences in the music industry are nothing short of fascinating. Listen in as we reflect on the success of the bands he's worked with, and learn how he began booking gigs for English and Irish bands in the summer of 1968.

Ted shares the story of Thin Lizzy's early days and the impact that Slade's tour had on their development – We hear how Lizzy's hit 'The Rocker' included the lyric "Rock on Stall," which was inspired by Ted's own record store. We also discuss the decision that led to Gary Moore's departure from the band and how Ted eventually made the choice to launch Chiswick  Records. Ted's keen eye for talent is evident in the bands he's discovered and helped, including Motorhead and Sniff 'n' the Tears.

Finally, Ted opens up about his passion for music and how it led him to open his new Rock On Records in Stamford, using it as a platform to make people aware of great music. We also discuss his charitable work, selling memorabilia from bands like the Sex Pistols and the Clash to raise money for charity. Ted's story is an inspiring example of combining his hobbies and mission to make a difference in the world. Don't miss this captivating episode with the one and only Ted Carroll!

Jesse Rector - Racing in the Street

Jesse Rector - Racing in the Street

This week's guest is the unofficial moral compass of eastern seaboard, at least in mind. Jesse Rector is a fighter.  He breaks down systemic barriers. He stands for what is right and is unapologetic about being a loud voice for equity.

Jesse is Jersey born and raised, where it's hard not to be influenced by The Boss himself. At an early age, punk rock "wrapped its arms around him" and he never looked back. I've been looking forward to this conversation for years. Enjoy!

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E49

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E49

Episode 49 of Season 5 aired on 8 December 2022 at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio.  It began with the very track that started me on this 40-plus-year journey down Rock and Roll Road i.e. ‘Detroit Rock City’, the opening track from Kiss’s Destroyer.  That album changed my life, and may have changed yours too.  If you get yourself a copy of The Story of Rock and Roll you may find some parallels.  From Kiss, we went to The Clash and the title track of the London Calling album.   Next, we got a deluge of guitar from Jake E. Lee and Ivan Ivankovic.  Ivan on a track called 'World in Fear' and Jake with Badlands back in 1984.  Randy Rhoads would have turned 66 this week so we wished him happy birthday in heaven and then checked out his more than able replacement Zakk Wylde in his band Black Label Society and a track called Lovin’ Woman' off the Unblackened album.

We checked out The Raven Age and a track called 'The Death March' and that fitted well with yet another track of the latest Queensrÿche album Digital Noise Alliance.  We had some Lynyrd Skynyrd with ‘Call me The Breeze’ and then another bit of classic rock in the form of 'Call On Me' from Bad Company.  Now if you are listening internationally then I am sorry I bang on about the state of South Africa as much as I do, it is a tragedy we are living through, a government that has betrayed the electorate and stolen all the money by looting and collapsing all the State-owned enterprises.  We are on the cusp of a complete blackout with load shedding around 8 hours a day.  It was therefore politically correct to bitch about it and play The Damned’s ‘Wait For The Blackout, followed by Sex Pistols and 'EMI'.  If you substitute ANC for EMI you get the picture.  From there it was time for some upliftment and that came in the form of Van Halen with 'Dreams', The Gaslight anthem with 'Stay Lucky', and Sixx A.M. with ‘High On The Music’.  We will get through this and the music helps.

The downhill run included some grungy stuff from Audioslave, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains.  It was post-Layne Staley Alice in Chains I might add, William Duvall is doing a great job in AIC.  Next up, classics from ACDC and Black Sabbath, and then some Halestorm with a cover of Sophie B. Hawkins’s 'Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover'.  We took a listen to a lot of brilliant stuff that is new to me, St Aurora out of Finland, Girish and the Chronicles out of India, and Risingfall out of Japan.  Thanks to the wifi situation with a lot of the cell towers in the country rendered useless because the batteries have been stolen, I lost a lot of listeners, apologies to all who were frustrated with the signal dropping.  The end of the show turned into a beautiful Metal Festival featuring, Sword, Motörhead, Pantera, Bewitcher, and Arch Enemy.  We ended off with Claymorean, a metal band out of Lazarevac, a small mining town in Serbia. Claymorean are one of the best bands I have discovered this year.  I hope you enjoyed the episode, comments are welcome, watch out for the monthly newsletter and let me know if you want to be on the mailing list.  Thestoryofrockandroll1@gmail.com
