Helmet, the iconic alternative metal band that emerged from New York City in the late 1980s, stands as a testament to the power of artistic innovation within the realm of heavy music. Founded by frontman and guitarist Page Hamilton, Helmet has left an indelible mark on the landscape of rock and metal with their unique blend of raw aggression, intricate songwriting, and thought-provoking lyrics.

The band's journey began in 1989 when they released their debut album, "Strap It On," on the independent label Amphetamine Reptile Records. This album, marked by its deceptively simple yet highly effective riffing, immediately caught the attention of fans and critics alike. Page Hamilton's fractured soloing style and distinct vocal delivery set Helmet apart from the burgeoning alternative music scene, where they stood as a harbinger of a new era in heavy music.

Helmet's breakthrough came with their second album, "Meantime," released in 1992 on Interscope Records. This album showcased Hamilton's songwriting prowess and cemented the band's status as a heavy-hitting force in the industry. Tracks like "Unsung" and "In the Meantime" became anthems for a generation, and the album itself achieved Gold certification, signifying its enduring impact.

What sets Helmet apart from many of their peers is their dedication to musical intricacy and innovation. Page Hamilton, a trained jazz guitarist with a background in avant-garde music, brought a level of sophistication to their heavy sound that was unparalleled. The band's use of drop-D tuning, unconventional time signatures, and dissonant chords created a sonic landscape that challenged the conventions of heavy music. Songs like "Wilma's Rainbow" and "Rollo" exemplify this complexity, offering listeners a glimpse into the band's commitment to pushing the boundaries of their genre.

After releasing two more albums, "Betty" in 1994 and "Aftertaste" in 1997, the original lineup of Helmet disbanded in 1998. However, Page Hamilton's artistic journey was far from over. He continued to explore various musical avenues, collaborating with artists like David Bowie, Caspar Brötzmann, and Wire, among others. This period of exploration allowed him to expand his sonic palette and further solidify his status as a musical innovator.

In 2004, Hamilton reformed Helmet with an all-new lineup, releasing several albums, including "Size Matters" (2004), "Monochrome" (2006), "Seeing Eye Dog" (2010), and "Dead To The World" (2016). These albums demonstrated that Helmet's spirit of innovation and uncompromising intensity remained intact, even with a new lineup.

In 2023, Helmet announced the release of their ninth studio album, "Left," set to be released on November 10th on earMUSIC. This announcement was accompanied by the "Look Left Tour," taking the band through various regions of North America. It marked their first tour since the pandemic, and fans eagerly anticipated hearing new material from this legendary band.

Helmet's journey through the realms of heavy music and artistic innovation has been nothing short of remarkable. Page Hamilton's unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging conventions has led to the creation of music that transcends genres and continues to captivate audiences. Helmet's legacy as pioneers of alternative metal is secure, and their enduring influence on heavy music is a testament to the enduring power of artistic innovation.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E35

S6E35 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 31 August 2023.  It was an auspicious occasion, my last day of work at a company I ran for the last 10 years.  As a result, there is a thinly veiled theme of moving on, changes, new beginnings, disappearances etc, etc.  This is demonstrated by the 3 opening tracks, ‘This is How I Disappear, ‘Let Me Out’ and ‘Gotta Get Away’.  Check out the Artists Featured below for the order of play.

This week’s Immortals Track featured Thin Lizzy off Live and Dangerous with ‘Still In Love With You.

Our summer season theme continues with The Offspring's 2000 album, Conspiracy of One. Released immediately after the smash hit Americana, The Offspring tried to replicate the success of songs like Pretty Fly for a White Guy and The Kids Aren't Alright. How well does it hold up 23 years later?

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E24

S6E24 went out live on air on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 15 June 2023.  It’s a public holiday in SA tomorrow so it was party time and a good crowd was tuned in.  The show kicked off with This Flight Tonight, Nazareth live at the BBC back in 1975.  Check the artists below to see the run of the show.

The Ultimate Challenge this week looked at 1982, the four albums were Judas Priest – Screaming For vengeance, Iron Maiden – Number of the Beast, Accept – Restless and Wild and, Scorpions – Blackout.

The Immortals, a track over 7 min long that sums up everything great about an Artist was ‘Crime in The City’ from Neil Young.  Check out the Neil Young Rock Review a couple of weeks back if you haven’t heard it.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E17

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E17

S6E17 or Season Six Episode Seventeen of The Story Rock and Roll Radio Show went out live at 7:00 PM on the 27th of April 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio. We kicked off with ACDC and a track off Back in Black called 'Shoot to Thrill'.  It was Freedom Day in South Africa so we celebrated our freedom from electricity, water, and roads without potholes.  We listened to stuff like Badlands 'Streets Cry Freedom' and Tesla ‘Freedom Slaves’ to stay in the moment.

The Immortals track this week, (that’s a track over 7 minutes long that is fully representative of what an artist is all about but generally is too long for radio airplay) featured Rory Gallagher performing his masterpiece ‘A Million Miles Away’.  This version was nine minutes long and came from his fantastic album Irish Tour ’74 40th Anniversary Edition.  Special shou out to bass guitarist Gerry McAvoy whose contribution is immense.  There were some awesome moments on this show, like the power pairings of Dirty Honey's  ‘Another Last Time’ with The Darkness' ‘Holding My Own’.  Here the synergy comes from the emotional slow bluesy guitars, it is just amazing.

There wasn’t a lot of new stuff so we continued with Metallica’s 72 Seasons as well as Ian Hunter’s Defiance pt 1.  There was a new Texas Hippie Coalition so planned to give that a run but ran out of time, next week, I promise.

On the local music, we had a short interview with flash rockers Marene and took in their brand new release ‘Partners In Crime’, it is a great track and we also took a listen to ‘Poison’ by Jackson Colt just to keep the SA music flowing.  Jackson Colt is such an awesome guitarist, it’s great how we have all these guitarists who were exposed to guitar-based music from bands like Kiss, Van Halen, and all the ’80s mega-bands by parents like me :-), we are certainly richer for it.

The Ultimate Challenge this week featured Tom Petty – Hypnotic Eye, Foo Fighters – Sonic Highways, Accept – Blind Rage, and Seether – Isolate and Medicate.  No clear winner here, I got votes for all of them, but then Accept just crept in by a last minute vote.  Top lyric goes to Seether for “Because you’re the one who needs the fucking intervention" line although in retrospect The Jam with 'Thick as Thieves' a song all about the ANC was right up there.

The end of this show was a mad rush to squeeze in UK Punk from The Stranglers, The Clash, and The Jam, also some Kid Rock, and for the first time ever on TSORR a track from Eminem.   We finished with something completely different and it went down very well, enjoy.

Artists featured:  ACDC, Badlands, Rough Cutt, Airbourne, La>a Guns, Adrenaline, Clutch, Dirty Honey, The Darkness, The Offspring, Danko Jones, Aerosmith, Rainbow, Rainbow, Five Finger Death Punch, System of a Down, Tesla, The Dead Daisies, Marene, Jackson Colt, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Metallica, Ian Hunter, Ace Frehley, Rory Gallagher, Seether, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Foo Fighters, Accept, The Clash, the Jam, The Stranglers, Kid Rock, Eminem, Monty Python

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E1

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E1

Welcome to 2023 and Season 6 of the Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Episode 1 got going on 5 Jan 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 with a track called 'Emaheeval' by Desperado.  Desperado was a post-Twisted Sister band comprising Dee Snider, Bernie Tormé, Clive Burr, and Marc Russell.  It's an excellent album that was shelved in a nasty bit of spite by Bob Krasnow and it’s a pity because if it had been released at the time it would have done well.  Dee has done OK though.  Next up Aerosmith with Walk This Way, what a riff!!  Joe Perry at his finest.  We continued with some Thundermother out of Stockholm, who are doing a great job of paying reparations for the music ABBA subjected the world to in the '70s, nice work ladies, and thank you 😊.

We had a bit of US Punk with The Offspring and Anti-Flag and then went back into the late ‘80s for some White Lion and Bulletboys with 'Kid With a 1000 Faces' and 'Badlands' respectively.   Australia's finest gave us a track called ‘This Means War’ which reminded me of Blue Suede Shoes for some reason, I am talking about ACDC of course.  From there we went bluesy with Rory Gallagher and South Africa’s very own Dan Patlansky who has done so well with his latest release Shelter of Bones.  Next, back to Australia for some Electric Mary and a track called ‘One in a Million’, then we went to France for Laura Cox with a song called 'Australian Rock', it's confusing I know, all this Aussie stuff.  Laura Cox is really putting out some good stuff, check her out.  Metallica and Hellyeah made things heavy again and then we took some time out to listen to an absolute ‘70s Rock Classic in the form of ‘Can’t You hear Me Knocking’ off Sticky Fingers.  This masterpiece from The Rolling Stones marks the start of the plan to play more ‘70’s over 7 min classics in Season 6.

We hit the last hour with some UK Punk, ‘Mary of the Fourth Form’ from The Boomtown Rats and ‘Duchess’ from the Stranglers.  We had Thunder off their latest release Dopamine and then a track from Sakis Tolis off the Among the Fires of Hell album, we stayed heavy with Soilwork and a track called ‘Harvest Spine’.  There was a lot from the ladies on this show, we heard a  band called Love Bites out of Japan, The Donnas, and something newish from Brody Dalle and her band The Distillers.  It comes from an album called Live In Lockdown.  We went out blazing with Obituary and the title track off the forthcoming ‘Dying of Everything’.

Artists featured:  Desperado, Aerosmith. Leslie West, Thunder Mother, The L.A. Maybe, The Offspring, Anti-Flag, Bulletboys, White Lion, ACDC, Jorn, Rory Gallagher, Dan Patlansky, Electric Mary, Laura Cox, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Hellyeah, Rammstein, Marilyn Manson, Dino Jelusic, Buckcherry, The Rolling Stones, The Boomtown Rats, The Stranglers, Thunder, The Dead Daisies, Sakis Tolis, Soilwork, Rush, Pride & Glory, Love Bites, Blue Scream, Man As Machine, The Distillers, The Donnas, Obituary, Eluveitie.

Ep. 110: Old In The 90's - What Were They Thinking?

Transmission 1991: Danger! Danger! The Dinosaurs are at severe risk of extinction unless they can quickly evolve into a down-tuned, depressed, dirgy, dirty, flannel-wearing anti-dinosaur! Living fossils that once rocked stadiums with shredding guitars, spandex, lipstick, and hair spray have purchased wah-wah pedals and must sing about something other than their love pumps! Listen with extreme caution, as they will surely collapse under the weight of their folly. You have been warned... Whatever…

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This time around we are bringing you the most lost of the lost. These are songs and albums by artists you know that the artists themselves have tried to lock away and bury! This is the continuation of our series that explores what happens to the dinosaurs when they attempt to follow trends…

    Songs this week include:

    1. Warrant - “Family Picnic” from Ultraphobic (1995)
    2. L.A. Guns - “Long Time Dead” from Vicious Circle (1993)

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E1

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E1

Welcome to Season 4 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Episode one kicked off live at 7 pm on 7 Jan 2021.  It was a great episode, a lot of regular listeners who had missed the show over the festive season were back and that always leads to some good energy.  We kicked off with Axel Rudi Pell and a track called ‘Gunfire’.  That was followed closely by Bad Company and a track called ‘Walk Through Fire’.  The point was made that this is the Brian Howe version of Bad Company and a surprising amount of people don’t know the post-Paul Rodgers material.

We spent a bit of time around 1990 – 1993 with L.A. Guns, Dangerous Toys, and Aerosmith and then took in some classic ACDC and Rammstein before checking out some Shinedown by request and some vintage Soundgarden.  Newish stuff was covered in the form of Burning Witches, 5 ladies out of Switzerland, and Voice of Extreme from their 2018 album Mach III.

Highlights for me were listening to Metallica’s ‘The Day That Never Comes’ and Megadeth with ‘This Was My Life’.  Megadeth are soon to feature on the Rock Review so watch out for that.  Local rock was ably taken care of by Jasper Dan, The Burning, and L.A. Cobra.  Cold Chisel and Airbourne were the Aussie representatives and for the rest, it was a pretty even mix of UK and USA bands.  I have rediscovered The Wild Life by Slaughter, which went down well as did the wonderful contrast between Testament and Dire Straits.  I am also really digging Thundermother.

Artists featured:  Axel Rudi Pell, Bad Company, Dangerous Toys, Brides of Destruction, L.A. Guns, Aerosmith, ACDC, Rammstein, Burning witches, Voices of Extreme, Shinedown, Soundgarden, The Offspring, The Sex Pistols, The Professionals, Thundermother, Airbourne, Cold Chisel, Accept, Bullet Boys, Armored Saint, Joe Satriani, Iron Maiden, Testament, Dire Straits, Jasper Dan, The Burning, L.A.
