Ep. 199: Arcane Sounds From The Big SCREAM 2

Happy Friday the 13th! Join us as we head over to Video Shop to pick out a frightastic flick! That’s right, we are going to rent some tapes and we’re prepared for blood n’ gore n’ frights! Did you ever hear about rock bands selling their souls to the devil, and if you listen to their music or play their albums backward you will turn into a demonic zombie??? The 70s, 80s, and 90s were full of films about horrific demons and metal n’ punk bands either having their songs featured in the movie or were themselves featured as the subject of the film. Grab your Reeses Pieces, large Coke, a severed limb, and hum along.

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week Robert gets a glimpse into another collection of lost and forgotten songs from the silver screen SCREAM! Our hope is that we turn you on to something new… and that you make it to the end of the movie!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Dee Snider – “Inconclusion” from Dee Snider’s Strangeland (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)(1998)
    2. Dangerous Toys – “Demon Bell (The Ballad Of Horace Pinker” from Shocker - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1989)
    3. Lion – “Love Is A Lie” from Friday The 13th – The Final Chapter – Songs From The Original Motion Picture (1984)
    4. Sorcery – “I’m Back” from Rocktober Blood (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1984)
    5. Anvil – “Straight Between The Eyes” from Sleepaway Camp II – Unhappy Campers – Songs From The Original Motion Picture (1988)
    6. Paul Sabu – “Street Angel (Mark Of The Devil)” from Hard Rock Zombies (1985)

Ep. 175: Grave Mistake: TORA TORA Shoulda Been Huge with Anthony Corder!!!

Ep. 175: Grave Mistake: TORA TORA Shoulda Been Huge with Anthony Corder!!!

This week we present another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. However, this is a first for us as we actually have the artist on to walk us through their journey thus far! We got to sit down and chat with Anthony Corder the lead singer for the amazingly awesome Tora Tora! We think this band Shoulda Been Huge and ruled the 90s!!!

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. As many folks who know this band did; Kevin picked up their debut, “Surprise Attack” back in 1989 and fell in love with their bluesy hard rockin’ swagger. We know that everyone is not familiar with their other albums due to the changing climate of the early 1990’s. Hopefully, we can turn you on further to this amazing band. Have a listen and find out for yourself! Thanks so much to Anthony for sharing his time and stories with us.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Tora Tora – “Dancing With A Gypsy” from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1989)
    2. Tora Tora – “Riverside Drive” from Surprise Attack (1989)
    3. Tora Tora – “Dead Man’s Hand” from Wild America (1992)
    4. Tora Tora – “Time And The Tide” from Revolution Day (1994)
    5. Tora Tora - “Revolution Day” from Revolution Day (1994)
    6. Tora Tora – “Rose Of Jericho” from Bastards Of Beale (2019)
    7. Tora Tora – “Little Girl Blue” from Little Girl Blue - single (2021)

Have Mic Will Travel With Jason McMaster Of Dangerous Toys

Jason joins me on this episode of Talkin' Rock to tell me about singing for Accept and Armored Saint, all in the space of a month or so. He talks about the crazy route it took to hop on stage with Accept, which may have led to his getting called up to front A.S.. We also talk about his podcast, his current touring situation and more.

Jason is a really good guy and was more than happy to Talk Rock with me!

Remember Pogo Ball? (with Julie Klausner)

Remember Pogo Ball? (with Julie Klausner)

This week we are excited to welcome writer, actress and comedian Julie Klausner to the podcast, who you may know from her popular Hulu series "Difficult People," her podcast DOUBLE THREAT with Tom Scharpling and/or her brand new podcast ASK JULIE! on the Forever Dog Plus Network. We discuss with Julie the many similarities between the films "Singles" and "Reality Bites" (including highlights from both soundtracks), dissect "Empire Records" and "So I Married an Axe Murderer" (GWAR discussion included) and reminisce about the time Vanessa introduced Jonah to Eddie Vedder and he said Vanessa was cool. We also revisit one of the most dangerous toys of the nineties aka the Pogo Ball, and explore their unorthodox commercial campaign which for some reason featured a giant monster hand trying to destroy the universe? Then we round things out with our viral segment "Legit Moan or Unnecessary Groan?" where we scan the Plain Dealer from a decade ago to find out what Clevelanders were complaining about, from smoking in casinos to extreme couponers. Unlike a Pogo Ball commute this podcast moves fast, so don't forget to don protective gear before listening.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E25

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E25

Another fun episode of TSORR, this one went out on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 23 June 2022.  It was episode 25 so we are nearly halfway through Season 5 already.  Kicking off with Dee Snider and ‘Mask’, and then Lita Ford with ‘The Mask’ we symbolically said cheers to wearing masks in SA at last.  Or until the next pandemic in 2060 but I don’t think flu will be around by then anyway, or me for that matter.  Moving on.  We checked out Autograph with a very fresh sounding 2017 live version of ‘Turn Up The Radio’ and then got down to business with some Megadeth, Saxon, and Guns 'n' Roses.  The new Megadeth called The Sick, The Dying and the Dead is on pre-release but we took in a track off United Abominations called 'Washington is Next.  The G 'n' Roses track came off Chinese Democracy, just for a change.

To rebalance for a Guns 'n' Roses without Slash we played a track off his It's 5 'o Clock Somewhere album.   There was a call for some metal so I played Asking Alexandria which was met with Oom-ish howls which a stated with Metallica's 'The Thing That Should Not Be'.  More howls, so we got back to old-school metal in the form of ACDC and Rainbow.  The world has changed a lot.   Other than that we paid tribute to Clarens Clemons who died 11 years ago this week.  'Born to Run' did the honours there.  We heard the obligatory Tom Petty track and some Marilyn Manson with 'New Model No 15' off Mechanical Animals.  Rammstein hit us with 'Haifisch' which means shark in English and then we celebrated a historic victory in which the forces of good triumphed over the forces of evil at the CCMA, Slayer with 'Richard Hung Himself' marked that spot.

No SA music in this episode!!!  can't believe it, it just got too busy.  Next week I promise.  Other than that there were two good releases this week Machine Head with a track called 'Unhallowed' and In Flames with 'State of Slow Decay', heavy metal is alive and kicking ass.  We went out quietly with Judas Priest's beautiful ballad titled 'Never Forget' which reminds us that they will keep going until they no longer can and that they will never forget the support from the fans, it's a bitter-sweet reminder of the fragility of it all.  Tomm Waits closed the gate with 'Gun Street Girl' off raindogs.

Artists featured:  Dee Snider, Lita Ford, Kris Barras Band, Autograph, Bad Company, Megadeth, Praying Mantis, Rhino Bucket, Saxon, Dangerous Toys, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Asking alexander, Metallica, ACDC, Rainbow, Slash’s Snake Pit, Soil, Slayer, System of a Down, Soundgarden, Bush, The Jam, The Damned,  Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Windowpane, Skid Row, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Cold Chisel, Uriah Heep, Motörhead, Machine Head, In Flames, Judas Priest, Tom Waits

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E23

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E23

Episode 23 of season 5 aired on 9 June at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio. First up we had 1000 Homo DJs.  Basically, that is Al Jorgenson of Ministry fame with a few buddies, people like Jello Biafra.  From there we had a 'Poisoned heart' by Black Star Riders.  Classic rock from Def Leppard, Krokus, Journey, and Whitesnake off the Love Hunter album moved us along nicely.  Korn took us into the 2000s and we stayed there with 21st-century bands The Temperance Movement and a solo album by ex-Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell.

Jaques called in to ask if there were any drums so we took a listen to Doro Pesch and Warlock with a track called 'Hellbound'.  We celebrated the Queen's platinum (70th) Jubilee with 'God Save the Queen', the track that cemented the Sex Pistol's reputation as foul-mouthed yobs.  Staying in 1977 we checked out The Clash with 'Hate and War' and UK Punk heavyweights The Stranglers with a track off 1978's Black and White called 5 Minutes.

The highlight for me was playing a song that is very special to me by a South African band called Count Ash.  Featuring guitar god Joe da Silva, Count Ash were resident at the Roxy Rhythm Bar in Melville in the early '90s.  I spent many Friday nights there in the company of fellow Sleaze Patrollers Marq Vas, Dave Lee Owen, and Stu Hollendrake.  Thanks to Vas who has the largest collection of SA music in the world (check out Mark Vas's South African Music Collectibles) I managed to get an MP3 copy of the track 'Holding On' which I rediscovered on my Phil Wright Tapes last week.  It was amazing to hear it again.  It made sense to keep those memorable days flowing with another track by The Diamond Dogs, they have been getting a lot of airplay lately thanks to Rebel Rock's Tinus Nel, who gave me some recordings that he helped fund many years ago.  I sort of lost control of the show for a while but we did chat briefly about Rodriguez, and Johnny Depp and we got to hear 'The Economic Theory of Jesus' by The Uninvited for the first time ever on TSORR.

Artists featured:  1000 Homo DJs, Black Star Riders, Def Leppard, Dangerous Toys, Whitesnake, Krokus, Journey, Metallica, Korn, Thunder, The Temperance Movement, Thin Lizzy, Phil Campbell, Warlock, W.A.S.P., Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, the Clash, Butchering The Beatles, Hollywood Vampires, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Rodriguez, Kid Rock, Children of Bodom, System of a Down, Sabaton, Stone Sour, Vixen, The Rolling Stones, Count Ash, The Diamond Dogs, The Uninvited, Johnathan Martin, Buckcherry, Skid Row, Slash’s Snakepit, Sixx AM, The Distillers, Ozzy Osbourne.

Ep. 110: Old In The 90's - What Were They Thinking?

Ep. 110: Old In The 90's - What Were They Thinking?

Transmission 1991: Danger! Danger! The Dinosaurs are at severe risk of extinction unless they can quickly evolve into a down-tuned, depressed, dirgy, dirty, flannel-wearing anti-dinosaur! Living fossils that once rocked stadiums with shredding guitars, spandex, lipstick, and hair spray have purchased wah-wah pedals and must sing about something other than their love pumps! Listen with extreme caution, as they will surely collapse under the weight of their folly. You have been warned... Whatever…

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This time around we are bringing you the most lost of the lost. These are songs and albums by artists you know that the artists themselves have tried to lock away and bury! This is the continuation of our series that explores what happens to the dinosaurs when they attempt to follow trends…

    Songs this week include:

    1. Warrant - “Family Picnic” from Ultraphobic (1995)
    2. L.A. Guns - “Long Time Dead” from Vicious Circle (1993)
    3. 2wo - “Stutter Kiss” from Voyeurs (1997)
    4. Dangerous Toys - “Cure The Lane” from The R*tist 4*merly Known as Dangerous Toys (1995)
    5. The Cult - “Coming Down (Drug Tongue)” from The Cult (1994)
    6. Dokken - “Puppets On A String” from Shadowlife (1997)

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E21

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E21

Episode 21 of Season 4 kicked off on Rebel Rock Radio at 7 pm on 27 May 2021.  We started with Yngwie Malmsteen and Jeff Scott Soto's wonderful cover of 'Magical Mystery Tour' off Butchering the Beatles.  It's probably one of the best ways you can possibly start a radio show.  From there it was Five Finger Death Punch, and then a detour down 'Copperhead Road' with Steve Earle and some Dire Straits before we unwittingly ended up in a sort of Aliens theme for a few songs courtesy of Journey, Blink 182, and The Misfits.  The back-to-back Iron Maiden and Judas Priest with 'Blood Red Skies' bought us back to earth.

The Doors with 'Riders on the Storm' really went down well, it's such an incredible song, or as one listener put it "for my soul".  SA bands included Mark Haze, Wonderboom, Arapaho, The Color Blew, and near the end, what I consider to be the best metal band in the country, Sunken State with a new track called ' Separation Has Begun'.  Mark my words this band is going to be huge as far as metal bands can be huge in today's world.

Highlights for me were listening to The Mayfield Four with 'Summergirl' and around 4 min in where Myles Kennedy just takes his vocals to a new level, absolutely incredible.  Whitesnake with 'Still of the Night' sounded amazing and Arch Enemy with Alissa White-Gluz on vocals and Michael Amott on guitar rounded out the highlights with 'You Will Know My Name' off War Eternal.

Artists featured:  Yngwie Malmsteen, Dangerous Toys, UFO, Slash, Five Finger Death Punch, Steve Earle, Dire Straits, Anthrax, Journey, Blink 182, Ramones, The Misfits, Whitesnake, Skid Row, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rammstein, Metallica, Shinedown, Mark Haze, Wonderboom, Arapaho, The Doors, LA Rats, Arch Enemy, Megadeth, W.A.S.P., Thin Lizzy, Sinner, The Mayfield Four, The Pretty Reckless, Temple of the Dog, Biters, Van Halen, Sunken State, Venom, The Color Blew

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E1

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E1

Welcome to Season 4 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Episode one kicked off live at 7 pm on 7 Jan 2021.  It was a great episode, a lot of regular listeners who had missed the show over the festive season were back and that always leads to some good energy.  We kicked off with Axel Rudi Pell and a track called ‘Gunfire’.  That was followed closely by Bad Company and a track called ‘Walk Through Fire’.  The point was made that this is the Brian Howe version of Bad Company and a surprising amount of people don’t know the post-Paul Rodgers material.

We spent a bit of time around 1990 – 1993 with L.A. Guns, Dangerous Toys, and Aerosmith and then took in some classic ACDC and Rammstein before checking out some Shinedown by request and some vintage Soundgarden.  Newish stuff was covered in the form of Burning Witches, 5 ladies out of Switzerland, and Voice of Extreme from their 2018 album Mach III.

Highlights for me were listening to Metallica’s ‘The Day That Never Comes’ and Megadeth with ‘This Was My Life’.  Megadeth are soon to feature on the Rock Review so watch out for that.  Local rock was ably taken care of by Jasper Dan, The Burning, and L.A. Cobra.  Cold Chisel and Airbourne were the Aussie representatives and for the rest, it was a pretty even mix of UK and USA bands.  I have rediscovered The Wild Life by Slaughter, which went down well as did the wonderful contrast between Testament and Dire Straits.  I am also really digging Thundermother.

Artists featured:  Axel Rudi Pell, Bad Company, Dangerous Toys, Brides of Destruction, L.A. Guns, Aerosmith, ACDC, Rammstein, Burning witches, Voices of Extreme, Shinedown, Soundgarden, The Offspring, The Sex Pistols, The Professionals, Thundermother, Airbourne, Cold Chisel, Accept, Bullet Boys, Armored Saint, Joe Satriani, Iron Maiden, Testament, Dire Straits, Jasper Dan, The Burning, L.A. Cobra, Metallica, Megadeth. Keel, Night ranger, Slaughter, Black Sabbath, Michael Schenker Group, Biters, scorpions, My Chemical Romance, Francois Van Coke.
