This week we provide you with the finest in Hair To Hair Combat! You got it… we are dipping our spandex-covered legs into the pool of obscure glam metal. New to InObscuria? Every week your two hosts crawl down to the crypts to exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. If you dig it… go dig it up and buy it! Support these artists and keep your devil horns and hair high in the air!

    Ep. 218: The Inbetweeners - When 80s Met 90s pt.2

    Ep. 218: The Inbetweeners - When 80s Met 90s pt.2

This week we pay homage to bands straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge. These were bands that were somewhat outside of the status quo specifically in the hard rock and metal world that seemed to be playing music that was more genre and categorization-defying. Thus we created our own non-genre called; The Inbetweeners!

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we cover all 3 categories and even some bands that we played early on in the podcast. The transition from the hard rockin’ 80s to the punk-edged alternative of the 90s was a time like no other, and some bands simply got caught in the middle. Go and check out these songs and the albums that they come from and enjoy some music from The Inbetweeners!

    Songs this week include:

    1. Naked Sun – “Psycho-Activate” from Naked Sun (1991)
    2. Funhouse – “Y.R.S.” from Generation Generator (1990)
    3. No Walls – “Naive” from No Wall (1992)
    4. Animal Bag – “Missing Out” from Animal Bag (1992)
    5. Red Sea – “Blood” from Blood (1994)
    6. The Hatters – “Sacrifice” from The Madcap Adventures Of The Avocado Overlord (1994)
    7. Loudhouse – “Faith Farm” from For Crying Out Loud (1991)

Ep. 215: Covers From Beyond!!! - Classic Rock

Ep. 215: Covers From Beyond!!! - Classic Rock

This week is all about bands playing other bands' songs… classic songs that perhaps radio has exhausted… Whether they are playing it straight note-for-note, or whether they are re-interpreting it; bands love to pay tribute to great songs that they love! In this episode, we showcase the diversity of how a band can take a classic rock hit that you’ve heard a million times and heavy it up.

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. If you’ve ever listened to classic rock radio… we got ya covered!

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E29

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E29

Episode 29 of Season 6 went out at 19h00 on 20 July 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio.  It was unusual in that we had two interviews this week as opposed to the usual one.  We chatted to Jacques van der Merwe about ‘Let It Fall’ the brand-new single released by When Angels Come.  Catch this at around 1:30. The second interview is with Chaos Doctrine main Man Dr. D and it was a very cool chat we had before introducing their brand new track for the first time on the radio.  It is called 'One of My Bad Days' and it gets released tomorrow morning (Friday 21 July).

This week’s Immortals track featured ‘Cabo Wabo’ a track off Van Halen’s OU812 album.  From there we went to the Diabolical Challenge and checked out 4 albums from 1995.  The albums were:  ACDC – Ballbreaker, White Zombie – Astro Creep 2000, Ozzy Osbourne – Ozzmosis, and Oasis – (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?.  The tracks were 'Ballbreaker', 'Super Charger Heaven', 'Old L.A.', and 'Some Might Say' respectively  The view was as good as Ozzy and ACDC are they were not peaking in’95 whereas White Zombie and Oasis definitely were.  Oasis for the win.

Artists featured:  Iron Maiden, Accept, BlackØwl, Cinderella, Badlands, Godsmack, Drowning Pool, Jethro Tull, Scorpions, Dio, Chickenfoot, Green Day, Joe Jackson, The Clash, Slash, Q5, Smith / Kotzen Joel Hoekstra’s 13, Clutch, When Angels Came, Warrant, The Wildhearts, Tesla, Mastodon, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen, ACDC, White Zombie, Ozzy Osbourne, Oasis, Skid Row, Overkill, Chaos Doctrine, Def Leppard, Marvelous 3.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E17

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E17

S6E17 or Season Six Episode Seventeen of The Story Rock and Roll Radio Show went out live at 7:00 PM on the 27th of April 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio. We kicked off with ACDC and a track off Back in Black called 'Shoot to Thrill'.  It was Freedom Day in South Africa so we celebrated our freedom from electricity, water, and roads without potholes.  We listened to stuff like Badlands 'Streets Cry Freedom' and Tesla ‘Freedom Slaves’ to stay in the moment.

The Immortals track this week, (that’s a track over 7 minutes long that is fully representative of what an artist is all about but generally is too long for radio airplay) featured Rory Gallagher performing his masterpiece ‘A Million Miles Away’.  This version was nine minutes long and came from his fantastic album Irish Tour ’74 40th Anniversary Edition.  Special shou out to bass guitarist Gerry McAvoy whose contribution is immense.  There were some awesome moments on this show, like the power pairings of Dirty Honey's  ‘Another Last Time’ with The Darkness' ‘Holding My Own’.  Here the synergy comes from the emotional slow bluesy guitars, it is just amazing.

There wasn’t a lot of new stuff so we continued with Metallica’s 72 Seasons as well as Ian Hunter’s Defiance pt 1.  There was a new Texas Hippie Coalition so planned to give that a run but ran out of time, next week, I promise.

On the local music, we had a short interview with flash rockers Marene and took in their brand new release ‘Partners In Crime’, it is a great track and we also took a listen to ‘Poison’ by Jackson Colt just to keep the SA music flowing.  Jackson Colt is such an awesome guitarist, it’s great how we have all these guitarists who were exposed to guitar-based music from bands like Kiss, Van Halen, and all the ’80s mega-bands by parents like me :-), we are certainly richer for it.

The Ultimate Challenge this week featured Tom Petty – Hypnotic Eye, Foo Fighters – Sonic Highways, Accept – Blind Rage, and Seether – Isolate and Medicate.  No clear winner here, I got votes for all of them, but then Accept just crept in by a last minute vote.  Top lyric goes to Seether for “Because you’re the one who needs the fucking intervention" line although in retrospect The Jam with 'Thick as Thieves' a song all about the ANC was right up there.

The end of this show was a mad rush to squeeze in UK Punk from The Stranglers, The Clash, and The Jam, also some Kid Rock, and for the first time ever on TSORR a track from Eminem.   We finished with something completely different and it went down very well, enjoy.

Artists featured:  ACDC, Badlands, Rough Cutt, Airbourne, La>a Guns, Adrenaline, Clutch, Dirty Honey, The Darkness, The Offspring, Danko Jones, Aerosmith, Rainbow, Rainbow, Five Finger Death Punch, System of a Down, Tesla, The Dead Daisies, Marene, Jackson Colt, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Metallica, Ian Hunter, Ace Frehley, Rory Gallagher, Seether, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Foo Fighters, Accept, The Clash, the Jam, The Stranglers, Kid Rock, Eminem, Monty Python

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E11

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E11

Season 6 Episode 11 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 16 March 2023.  Badlands with Jake E. Lee and the late Ray Gillan got us out the blocks with a track called ‘Devil’s Stomp’.  From there we had some more devils courtesy of Chickenfoot and a track called ‘Different Devil’ off Chickenfoot III.  It was pretty much full-bore rock and roll for the first hour with bands like Godsmack, Stone Sour, and Marilyn Manson.  In particular, Stone Sour with ‘Do Me a Favour’ and Godsmack off their brand new album Lighting Up The Sky and a track called “Red White and Blue made a good pairing.

By request from Ash a brand new listener we had Shinedown with Breaking Inside’ and then Rival Sons with ‘Burn Down Los Angeles’.  From there is went a bit off the rails and served as a reminder that TSORR is not for young children as demonstrated by, Buckcherry’s ‘Somebody F*****d With Me’, and Metallica’s cover of The Anti Nowhere League's infamous  'So What’.  Then we went back to TSORR roots with ‘Samurai’ off Assault Attack from The Michael Schenker Group and then a track from Scorpions which made it a Schenker family affair.  Pretty much the only time you can get the Schenker bros together is if you play their songs back-to-back.  Sad ☹.

For this week’s Ultimate Challenge, we looked at 1987:  the four albums featured were from Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Guns ‘n Roses, and Whitesnake.  We had a great 4-minute interview with Ryno Theron, vocalist and guitarist from Truth Decayed, and followed this by we playing their brand-new track ‘Death By Design’.  It was a hell of a busy show;  we played more SA music with a brand-new track from Jack Hammer Band who are flying the flag for our beloved Piet Botha, then Blue Scream featuring my good friend Roger Kaye on vocals along with Robin Gallagher and Tully McCully.  This week's Immortals was 13 min long, check it out, ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ off Powerslave sounded amazing.  Iron Maiden are something else.  I recall hearing Phil Wright play the whole track back in 1984 when the album was released.  We wrapped up with Jethro Tull’s Aqualung and Volbeat’s ‘Shotgun Blues’, especially for Ian and Hardus, and said cheers with Bloodstone by the mighty Judas Priest.

Artists featured:  Badlands, Chickenfoot, Cinderella, Type O Negative, Marilyn Manson, Stone Sour, Godsmack, L.A. Guns, Rival Sons, Shinedown, Buckcherry, Metallica, Ramones, Michael Schenker Group, Scorpions, Dio, Girish and the Chronicles, Dead City Ruins, Danny Worsnop, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Whitesnake, Truth Decayed, Frank Zappa, Blue Scream, Jack Hammer Band, Sheryl Crow, Iron Maiden, Jethro Tull, Volbeat, Judas Priest.

Episode 61: Racing, Research and Raising Funds with Mickelina and Mark Monico

Episode 61: Racing, Research and Raising Funds with Mickelina and Mark Monico

Following in her father's footsteps, Mickelina has been racing  cars for the last two years and is looking forward to her third season. Mark Monico started racing when he was very young and even enjoyed racing go-karts at the historic Baylands race track here in Fremont.

Years ago, Mark was diagnosed with cancer, and it was through that experience that he saw the need to raise money to help fund ongoing research in that field of study. Mark started Race for Research several decades ago and has been very successful in his fund raising endeavors.

For various reasons, Mark found racing to be unsustainable as a way of life and the opportunities to raise funds for St. Jude research became more unrealistic as well. However, in the summer of 2022, Mickelina brought new life and energy to Race for Research and it was reborn.

Race for Research will be hosting a special Celebrity Waiter Dinner to again help raise funds for St. Judes and cancer research. You can learn more about that and register here.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E8

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E8

Episode 8 of Season 6 went out live at 7 pm on Rebel Rock Radio on 23 Feb 2023.  23 2 23 what a day, what a week what a 26-month journey.  I am out of the game.  Long live Rock and Roll.  We kicked off this very unplanned show with Guns ‘n’ Roses and ‘Anything Goes’.  From there something brand new from Black Star Riders and something old from Badlands, an awesome track called ‘High Wire’.  Mike Orlando from Adrenaline Mob gave us all guitar lessons on a track called 'Dearly Departed'.  Grunge duty was fulfilled by Nirvana, Puddle of Mud, and Temple of the Dog.

We checked out another track from Indian rockers Girish & the Chronicles and a track off their latest album Hail to the Heroes, featuring Lamb of God’s drummer, the brilliant Chris Adler.  There was an interesting little biographical bit all about 23 2 23 which has become a special day in the life of TSORR.  I’ll tell you about it if you want to know.  We checked out ‘Lay Your Hands On Me’ off Bon Jovi’s New Jersey album, then Bowie with ‘Changes’ and finally, U2 with ‘Beautiful Day’ which it was.  From there we checked out Metallica and all 7:50 of the Diamond Head classic ‘Am I Evil’ which is this week’s Immortal track.  The Ultimate Challenge this week looked at 1973.  The choices were Led Zeppelin – Houses of the Holy, Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon, The Rolling Stones – Goats Head Soup, and Black Sabbath's – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

We hit the home stretch with some punk courtesy of Blink 182 and ‘Edging’ then the Clash and The Stranglers and I couldn’t resist Patti Smith and 'Rock ‘n’ Roll Nigger',.  We ended heavy with Death Angel and Slayer and said good night with ‘Langpad’ by Cape Town legends The Uninvited.

Artists featured:  Guns ‘n’ Roses, Black Star Riders, Badlands, Reef, Smith / Kotzen, Adrenaline Mob, Black Country Communion, Clutch, Moon Tooth, Nirvana, Puddle of Mudd, Temple of the Dog, Girish and the Chronicles, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, Alice Cooper, KISS, Tesla, Rose Tattoo, Bon The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Blink 182, Jovi, David Bowie, U2, Metallica, ACDC, My Chemical Romance, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Blink 182, The Clash, The Stranglers, Patti Smith, Death Angel, Slayer, The Uninvited.

...about The Other Paul Williams (Part 2: Alchemical Badlands)

...about The Other Paul Williams (Part 2: Alchemical Badlands)

Paul Williams, the director (not the songwriter or the rock critic or the architect…) shares excerpts and outtakes from his memoir “Harvard, Hollywood, Hitmen & Holy Men” currently available as part of the Screen Classics collection from the University Press Of Kentucky. Williams is the director of “The November Men” which World is Wrong listeners will already be familiar with, as well as films like “Out Of It” (1969) and “The Revolutionary” (1970) both starring a young Jon Voight. Williams, with his production partner Edward Pressman, was a producer of films like Brian DePalma’s “Sisters” & “The Phantom Of The Paradise” as well as Terrence Malick’s “Badlands”. Beyond the movies, Paul rode the many of the movements of 1960’s, 70’s & 80’s, both political and cultural, with characters as varied as Julie Christie and Huey P. Newton, Fidel Castro and most of the “important” directors associated with New Hollywood

If you’re interested in the story of New Hollywood, Paul’s memoir fills in some major gaps. And if you’re too lazy to read the book, this podcast will give you a taste of what you’re missing.

    EPISODE TWO - ALCHEMICAL BADLANDS

Paul reads a segment from his memoir in which his alchemical transformation is interrupted by a labor dispute on the set of “Badlands”.

On this episode we dive into the discography of Halsey. It is our first foray into pop music. However, for knowing very little about Halsey coming in, we both walked away fairly impressed. If you are a pop music skeptic, don't be scared and dive in with us!

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E49

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E49

Episode 49 of Season 5 aired on 8 December 2022 at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio.  It began with the very track that started me on this 40-plus-year journey down Rock and Roll Road i.e. ‘Detroit Rock City’, the opening track from Kiss’s Destroyer.  That album changed my life, and may have changed yours too.  If you get yourself a copy of The Story of Rock and Roll you may find some parallels.  From Kiss, we went to The Clash and the title track of the London Calling album.   Next, we got a deluge of guitar from Jake E. Lee and Ivan Ivankovic.  Ivan on a track called 'World in Fear' and Jake with Badlands back in 1984.  Randy Rhoads would have turned 66 this week so we wished him happy birthday in heaven and then checked out his more than able replacement Zakk Wylde in his band Black Label Society and a track called Lovin’ Woman' off the Unblackened album.

We checked out The Raven Age and a track called 'The Death March' and that fitted well with yet another track of the latest Queensrÿche album Digital Noise Alliance.  We had some Lynyrd Skynyrd with ‘Call me The Breeze’ and then another bit of classic rock in the form of 'Call On Me' from Bad Company.  Now if you are listening internationally then I am sorry I bang on about the state of South Africa as much as I do, it is a tragedy we are living through, a government that has betrayed the electorate and stolen all the money by looting and collapsing all the State-owned enterprises.  We are on the cusp of a complete blackout with load shedding around 8 hours a day.  It was therefore politically correct to bitch about it and play The Damned’s ‘Wait For The Blackout, followed by Sex Pistols and 'EMI'.  If you substitute ANC for EMI you get the picture.  From there it was time for some upliftment and that came in the form of Van Halen with 'Dreams', The Gaslight anthem with 'Stay Lucky', and Sixx A.M. with ‘High On The Music’.  We will get through this and the music helps.

The downhill run included some grungy stuff from Audioslave, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains.  It was post-Layne Staley Alice in Chains I might add, William Duvall is doing a great job in AIC.  Next up, classics from ACDC and Black Sabbath, and then some Halestorm with a cover of Sophie B. Hawkins’s 'Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover'.  We took a listen to a lot of brilliant stuff that is new to me, St Aurora out of Finland, Girish and the Chronicles out of India, and Risingfall out of Japan.  Thanks to the wifi situation with a lot of the cell towers in the country rendered useless because the batteries have been stolen, I lost a lot of listeners, apologies to all who were frustrated with the signal dropping.  The end of the show turned into a beautiful Metal Festival featuring, Sword, Motörhead, Pantera, Bewitcher, and Arch Enemy.  We ended off with Claymorean, a metal band out of Lazarevac, a small mining town in Serbia. Claymorean are one of the best bands I have discovered this year.  I hope you enjoyed the episode, comments are welcome, watch out for the monthly newsletter and let me know if you want to be on the mailing list.  Thestoryofrockandroll1@gmail.com
