A Creative Conversation with Actress, Director, Business Owner (and Home Design Enthusiast) Melanie Mayron

A Creative Conversation with Actress, Director, Business Owner (and Home Design Enthusiast) Melanie Mayron

Host and designer Stephen Saint-Onge talks to internationally-recognized actress, director and business owner Melanie Mayron about her work on the show Thirtysomething that brought into the public eye in a big way, her film work with stars such as Jack Lemmon, Vanessa Redgrave, Sissy Spacek - to her current work as a film and television director on productions such as HBO Max's Julia (about Julia Child) starring Sarah Lancashire, David Hyde Pierce, Bebe Neuwirth and Isabella Rossellini, Stars network's The Serpent Queen, ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars to name a few.

At the same time, she started a successful family-owned, American-made, organic product line with her dad called www.mayronsgoods.com.   Stephen and Melanie talk about how that started and why she wanted to bring these organic products to the marketplace.

Her passion for home design and renovation are also discussed.

Currently, Melanie is acting off-Broadway in the original production Mad Women of The West.  She talks about "it's never over until it's over."  She says that she never expected to be on stage again acting - after 35 years - but now she finds herself doing just that.  Melanie says: "You never know where life will lead you!"

Melanie wears many creative hats and talks about her journey as a working actor and director in Hollywood and beyond - being a working mother to two grown children and  sharing her perspective on getting through the tough times and the importance of being able to keep moving forward.  She says she is her "third act" and she wants to keep doing work that is challenging, fulfilling and allows her to use all her talents at this stage of her life.

A wonderfully-inspiring conversation between two friends, a glimpse of Hollywood, of design in film and television - as well as a story of following your path and doing work that you love.  A great example of the ebb and flow of the seasons of life!

If you are on a journey to change your life - this conversation will help you tap into finding your joy, be reminded of listening to what is right for you and simply be inspired by this creative artist that has lived a creative life - but is still doing great things as she enters into her third act.

    Carrie
High School Movies Month continues with the classic horror/tragedy Carrie! Ben, Bree, Sam, and Vaz go to prom, strategically avoid hitting pigs with a hammer, and get right with a really zonked-out Jesus in Brian De Palma's adaptation of Stephen King's first novel. Directed by Brian De Palma, written by Lawrence D. Cohen, adapted from Stephen King's 1974 novel of the same name. Starring Sissy Spacek and featuring Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, William Katt, P. J. Soles, Betty Buckley, and John Travolta.

Folge 1236: THE STRAIGHT STORY - Der lange Weg zur Versöhnung

Folge 1236: THE STRAIGHT STORY - Der lange Weg zur Versöhnung

🪣 Since a lot of you have been asking for more Stephen King ever since our Thinner episode, we figured we would go back to the very beginning, with Carrie. Join us for this episode as we delve into the horrors of high school, deconstruct Brian De Palma's superb technical direction,  reminisce about our history with the film, and marvel at all of our favorite quotes, performances, and the incredibly powerful score by Pino Donaggio. We'll also choose which character we think was most deserving to die, so stick around until the end.

    Blast from the Past

    Blast from the Past

We have another listener recommendation this week! Our friend and friend of the podcast, Doug Shilo, recommended the 1999 romantic comedy Blast from the Past, starring Brendan Fraser and Alicia Silverstone. The Weber family has spent 35 years in a bomb shelter after mistaking a plane crash for the blast from a nuclear bomb. When the doors finally unlock, Adam ventures outside for the first time in his life to find provisions for the family, alcohol for this poor mother, and maybe a nice girl for himself.

Lizard women, pools, and an unhealthy amount of yellow. We praise this highly artistic collaboration between Altman and Duvall (who wrote her own monologues, diary entries, and recipes for the film) -- but this isn't the first "art film" to show your mildly curious friends.

...about The Other Paul Williams (Part 2: Alchemical Badlands)

...about The Other Paul Williams (Part 2: Alchemical Badlands)

Paul Williams, the director (not the songwriter or the rock critic or the architect…) shares excerpts and outtakes from his memoir “Harvard, Hollywood, Hitmen & Holy Men” currently available as part of the Screen Classics collection from the University Press Of Kentucky. Williams is the director of “The November Men” which World is Wrong listeners will already be familiar with, as well as films like “Out Of It” (1969) and “The Revolutionary” (1970) both starring a young Jon Voight. Williams, with his production partner Edward Pressman, was a producer of films like Brian DePalma’s “Sisters” & “The Phantom Of The Paradise” as well as Terrence Malick’s “Badlands”. Beyond the movies, Paul rode the many of the movements of 1960’s, 70’s & 80’s, both political and cultural, with characters as varied as Julie Christie and Huey P. Newton, Fidel Castro and most of the “important” directors associated with New Hollywood

If you’re interested in the story of New Hollywood, Paul’s memoir fills in some major gaps. And if you’re too lazy to read the book, this podcast will give you a taste of what you’re missing.

    EPISODE TWO - ALCHEMICAL BADLANDS

Paul reads a segment from his memoir in which his alchemical transformation is interrupted by a labor dispute on the set of “Badlands”.

CELEBRATE THE SENATE. THEN GET BACK TO WORK! 11.14.22

CELEBRATE THE SENATE. THEN GET BACK TO WORK! 11.14.22

EPISODE 75: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN

A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Well THAT was fun! Enjoy retaining the Senate and the fascists turning on Trump and then FORGET IT AND GET BACK TO WORK (2:32) Ever seen the movie "Carrie"? There is a lesson for us in it. When you think you have ended Carrie's reign of horror, make sure you burn the grave, salt the earth, and encase everything in concrete before she can reach up from hell to grab you. They are not defeated, they are developing a new Supreme Court scheme as we speak (4:26) Be aggressive - like Pelosi and Schumer planning to raise the debt limit during the Lame Duck session (5:44) And consider the more outlandish ideas: nominating Liz Cheney to be Speaker or offering cabinet or ambassador slots to uninfected GOP Congressmen (7:20) Because the fascists will now cut to the chase: supporters of a different Kari are calling for a military takeover of the government so they can get a new vote in Arizona (8:47) Now is the time to strike because they are burning down their own house: attacking Trump, McConnell, McCarthy and Ronna Romney while Trump cultists like Ann Coulter and Glenn Youngkin's Lieutenant Governor and even the DILBERT GUY bail on Trump (10:43) But now the next threat comes into focus: The Federalist Society is so hellbent to enact "Independent State Legislature Theory" that it has purged its own co-founder because he doesn't believe in it. Supreme Court Barbie - Amy Coney Barrett - and the other fascists do, as you'll hear. And to stop them, we'll need to designate The Federalist Society as a terrorist organization.

B-Block (18:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Maslow in Pennsylvania (19:02) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Coincidence? Trump wanted to "get the IRS on" Comey and McCabe. And each was then hit with a rare invasive audit. (21:07) IN SPORTS: No experience? No problem! Jeff Saturday wins in NFL coaching debut (23:39) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: A New Jersey Republican official calls the cops on a 9-year old African-American girl who "scared him." He competes with Sarah "They think we're stupid" Palin and Donald "They stole the ELECTRON from Blake Masters" Trump for the dishonors.

C-Block (29:36) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I really did fall off a cliff (well, a pretty tall rock outcropping) filming a TV Commercial for Boston Market. But that's only part of the story. The ads paid so much I was willing to quit ESPN to do them instead, and the ads were so perversely effective that the company went bankrupt!
