    The World Is Wrong

THE WORLD IS WRONG is an extremely positive podcast about movies the world is wrong about. Hosts ANDRAS JONES & BRYAN CONNOLLY have spent their lives championing these films, TV shows and cinematic artists.

Andras, is the star of many cult motion pictures, a songwriter, an author, a bartender, and the host and creator of the musical divination show, Radio8Ball.

Bryan, is a filmmaker, video store clerk, the co-author of the massive paean to punk rock in film "Destroy All Movies", and the co-host of "The Director's Wall" podcast.

Together they will introduce you to films you may have never seen or heard of,
many you may have heard of but from people who were simply wrong about them,
and maybe even a few that you saw and thought you didn't like.

Well, you were wrong and this is the podcast that will make you glad you were.

...about John Farrow with Marilyn Ann Moss

...about John Farrow with Marilyn Ann Moss

Marilyn Moss joins the podcast to discuss “The Farrows of Hollywood: Their Dark Side Of Paradise” her new biography of John Farrow, a director whose films deserve a re-appraisal and whose life is a frightening mystery.

How is the world wrong about John Farrow

From Andras: At first I wanted to talk to Marilyn Moss about her book because of my interest in Woody Allen. All I knew about John Farrow was that he sounded like the monster Mia often portrays Allen as, but once I started checking out John Farrow’s films like “Alias Nick Beale”, “His Kind of Woman”, “Night Has A Thousand Eyes”, “Two Years Before The Mast”, “Five Came Back” and of course, “The Big Clock” (which I’d already seen), it became evident to me that Farrow was an important and exciting director whose elegance, frankness, and odd lyrical spiritualism opened me up to a new (for me) cinematic voice.

...about The Other Paul Williams (Part 6: Meisner Dilgo)

...about The Other Paul Williams (Part 6: Meisner Dilgo)

Paul Williams, the director (not the songwriter or the rock critic or the architect…) shares excerpts and outtakes from his memoir “Harvard, Hollywood, Hitmen & Holy Men” currently available as part of the Screen Classics collection from the University Press Of Kentucky. Williams is the director of “The November Men” which World is Wrong listeners will already be familiar with, as well as films like “Out Of It” (1969) and “The Revolutionary” (1970) both starring a young Jon Voight. Williams, with his production partner Edward Pressman, was a producer of films like Brian DePalma’s “Sisters” & “The Phantom Of The Paradise” as well as Terrence Malick’s “Badlands”. Beyond the movies, Paul rode the many of the movements of 1960’s, 70’s & 80’s, both political and cultural, with characters as varied as Julie Christie and Huey P. Newton, Fidel Castro and most of the “important” directors associated with New Hollywood

If you’re interested in the story of New Hollywood, Paul’s memoir fills in some major gaps. And if you’re too lazy to read the book, this podcast will give you a taste of what you’re missing.

    EPISODE SIX - MEISNER DILGO

Paul's experiences with Buddhist master Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche are a pre-cursor to his immersion in the Sanford Mesiner acting technique in a class led by Jon Voight and David Proval that featured some pretty impressive participants. Also in this episode: We announce screenings of Paul Williams' films in NYC at The Roxy Cinema during the last week of March and in Los Angeles at The New Beverly Cinema on April 18th & 19th.

    EPISODE FIVE - HUEY

Paul's relationship with The Black Panthers began on the streets of New Haven, Connecticut and led him to Algiers where he shot a film about the party with Eldridge Cleaver as plans were being laid for a guerilla attack on New York City which ultimately never happened. Years later, in California, Paul became friends with Huey P. Newton which in a roundabout way led him to Cuba and a basketball game with Francis Ford Coppola, Terrence Malick and Fidel Castro.

EPISODE FOUR - OUT OF IT

In 1967 Paul Williams wrote and directed the film “Out Of It”. His production partner Edward Pressman, cinematographer John G. Avildsen, and a cast of future TV stars and Jon Voight fell in with his sophisticated take on high school. By the time “Out Of It” was released in 1969 films like “The Graduate” & “American Graffiti” had already mined the territory and rendered “Out Of It” quaint. Today, it is celebrated by filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and Larry Karaszewski, and shares some powerful resonances with the latest from Paul’s old friend Steven Spielberg, “The Fablemans”.

...about Psycho (1998) with Rodney Ascher

Director Rodney Ascher (“Room 237”) joins the podcast to discuss Gus Van Sant’s “shot-for-shot remake” of Hitchcock’s “Psycho”.

Directed by Gus Van Sant. Starring Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche, Julianne Moore, Viggo Mortensen, William H. Macy, Phillip Baker Hall, Robert Forster

How is the world wrong about “Psycho” (1998)

From Andras: When Gus Van Sant chose to follow-up his greatest hit (“Good Will Hunting”) with this big budget experimental art film based upon one of the most popular movies from one of the most esteemed directors of all time the responses ranged from befuddled to enraged but as usual the world was wrong.

The best film you’ve never heard of from the best director you’ve never heard of.

Directed by Andrew Repasky McElhinney Starring Marj Dusay, Oliver Wyman and Margot White

How is the world wrong about A Chronicle of Corpses?

From Bryan: When I first saw this movie I was floored. It’s Andy Milligan by way of Kubrick. Masterfully constructed, this is easily one of the best films of the 21st Century thus far. Yet nobody knows about it or has ever heard about it. I try to share this one with anyone who loves cinema, but feels like they’ve hit a wall with finding new challenging stuff. Brilliant. Brilliant. ...about Tequila Sunrise (1988)

    ...about Tequila Sunrise (1988)

Robert Towne writes and directs a glossy film about a heroic coke dealer and his best friends, an LA cop and a Mexican drug lord.

Written & Directed by Robert Towne. Starring Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell, Michelle Pfeiffer, Raul Julia, J.T. Walsh, Arliss Howard, Arye Gross & Budd Boetticher

How is the world wrong about “Tequila Sunrise”?

From Andras: This whole enterprise is pretty wrong and yet, the performances (from Gibson, Julia & Pfieffer) and its amoral drives make it compelling in ways that few films can match. Kurt Russell in particular is in top form. This might be the performance that demands the most of him as an actor.

    ...about The Two Jakes (1990)

    ...about The Two Jakes (1990)

Jack Nicholson directs and stars in the sequel to “Chinatown”.

Directed by Jack Nicholson. Written by Robert Towne. Produced by Robert Evans. Starring Jack Nicholson, Harvey Keitel, Madeline Stowe, Meg Tilly, Ruben Blades, Frederic Forrest, Richard Farnsworth & Tracy Walter

How is the world wrong about “The Two Jakes”?

From Andras: You’d think people would be into a Roman Polanski-less “Chinatown” sequel but they were not. Nicholson manages to give us a continuation of Robert Towne’s detective story about the evolution of Los Angeles that is simultaneously sleazier AND more compassionate than the original. If the world had been a little less wrong about this film we might’ve got a third installment, all about pollution and the LA freeway which, as Bryan points out in the episode, is kind of the plot of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”? which may be the closest we’ll get to the completion of the Chinatown series.

    ...about Southland Tales (2004)

    ...about Southland Tales (2004)

Sprawling, strange near masterpiece from the director of Donnie Darko

Directed by Richard Kelly. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Justin Timberlake, Mandy Moore, John Laroquette, Wallace Shawn, Curtis Armstrong, Amy Poehler, Cheri Oteri, Will Sasso, Miranda Richardson, Nora Dunne and Jon Lovitz

How is the world wrong about Southland Tales? Most people hate it. Most people find it an incomprehensible mess. Bryan finds it funny and unique. Altman meets Lynch meets Philip K. Dick meets Reality TV trash. Director Kelly takes a really big swing here. We applaud him for it!

    ...about Helzapoppin' (1941)

An everything but the kitchen sink zany masterpiece!!!

Directed by H.C. Potter Starring Ole Olsen, Chic Johnson, Martha Raye, Elisha Cook JR. & Shemp Howard.

How is the world wrong about Hellzapoppin’?

From Bryan: Fall down on your face funny stuff starring forgotten comedy duo Olsen & Johnson. Is this the greatest comedy of all time that no one talks about? Yep. Never released on a proper home video format this film inspired great filmmakers like Zucker & Abrahams & Zucker, Joe Dante, Allan Arkush and Steven Spielberg. The earliest example I can think of the joke per second way of presenting gags. Released the same year as Citizen Kane and goddammit just as important!

    ...about The Indian Runner (1991)

    ...about The Indian Runner (1991)

Sean Penn interprets a stark Springsteen song as his directorial debut and launches the career of Viggo Mortensen

Written & Directed by Sean Penn. Starring David Morse, Viggo Mortensen, Patricia Arquette, Valeria Golino, Charles Bronson, Sandy Dennis & Dennis Hopper

How is the world wrong about The Indian Runner?

From Andras: Sean Penn’s first film as a director is his best. Is it the first films of the 1990’s? A difficult character study based upon “Highway Patrolman”, a Bruce Springsteen song from his dark acoustic masterpiece “Nebraska” featuring three of the decade’s most defining cinematic performers; Patricia Arquette, Benicio Del Toro (in one scene) and Viggo Mortensen’s debut as a leading man/anti-hero. And yet…you don’t really hear people talk about this film much. That’s just plain wrong.

...about The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996)

...about The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996)

Let the insanity flow from actor to director to manimal.

Directed by John Frankenheimer & Richard Stanley. Starring Marlon Brando, Val Kilmer, David Thewlis, Fairuza Balk and Nelson de la Rosa.

How is the world wrong about The Island Of Dr. Moreau?

From Bryan: A troubled production that became tabloid fodder. The behind the scenes shenanigans of two directors in over their heads and unruly method actors may have tainted people’s opinions of this strange, unique film. Brando and Kilmer are really going for it here. Time for the hate to stop now. In this month of Shocktober let’s maybe give this creature filled horror film a chance.

    ...about Spartan (2004)

    ...about Spartan (2004)

A lean, mean paranoid political thriller from Mamet and Kilmer.

Written & Directed by David Mamet. Starring Val Kilmer, Derek Luke, Tia Texada, William H. Macy, Ed O’Neil, Kristen Bell, Mark Pellegrino, Said Taghmaoui, Natalia Nogulich & Geoff Pierson

How is the world wrong about Spartan?

From Andras: I’ve heard people call this a “fascist film”. It certainly depicts the cold machinations of the the US intelligence apparatus when they kick into action to “cherchez la femme” but not in any celebratory way. This film is dark, and cold and rich with Mamet’s words and rhythms which are particularly well-served by Kilmer’s natural low-key arrogance.
