    Midweek Mention... Heat

    Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today, we're delving into the crime-thriller world with a deep dive into the 1995 classic, Heat.

    Directed by Michael Mann, Heat is set in the crime-ridden streets of Los Angeles and is known for its gritty realism and intense action. This film isn't just a heist movie; it's a complex narrative exploring the lives and motivations of both the criminals and the law enforcement pursuing them.

    The story revolves around Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro), a professional thief, and Lt. Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), an LAPD robbery-homicide detective. It's a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, as McCauley's crew prepares for one final big score and Hanna becomes obsessed with bringing them down.

    Heat boasts an incredible ensemble cast, including Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, and Tom Sizemore. But the real draw is the electric dynamic between De Niro and Pacino, who share the screen in a famous coffee shop scene that has become a standout moment in film history.

    The film delves deep into the psyche of its characters, exploring themes of obsession, sacrifice, and the blurred lines between good and evil. Both McCauley and Hanna are depicted as flawed, complex characters, each driven by their own code of ethics.

    As dads, we'll talk about the moral complexities the film presents, the notion of duty versus personal life, and how it impacts family – a theme that resonates with many of us. We might not be planning heists or chasing down criminals, but the struggle to balance work and home life? That’s something we can all relate to.

    So, get ready for a thrilling ride as we explore Heat. Whether you're a first-time viewer or revisiting this gem, it's a film that's sure to spark some intense discussion and maybe even a few heated debates. Tune in to Bad Dads Film Review for a deep dive into one of the greatest crime dramas of the '90s. 🚔🔥🎬👨‍👧‍👦🍿

    Barguments: Bill & Ted v. Buckaroo Banzai v. Tremors v. Real Genius

    Barguments: Bill & Ted v. Buckaroo Banzai v. Tremors v. Real Genius

    Brian, Matt, Mike, Mike & Sean have a bargument about their favorite sci-fi films from childhood that became cult hits.  It’s a battle for the ages with The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension vs. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure vs. Real Genius vs. Tremors.  Beers are drank and mud is slung as they pour over the important questions.  Who are the real threats in Bill and Ted?  Can a house really be destroyed by popcorn? Which one of the Hong Kong Cavliers can “get it”?  And what exactly is coming out of that Graboid’s mouth?  4 movies enter, but only 1 will leave with any shreds of dignity.

    We Rewatch "The Postman" and "The Doors" (So You Don't Have To)
    Len and Beave rewatch two notable 90s film releases, "The Doors" starring Val Kilmer (and Titus Welliver in an unforgettable cameo), and "The Postman", directed by and starring Kevin Costner. We discuss our opinions of each movie, and why it succeeded (or failed). Len discusses his hatred for GIovanni Ribisi, and wonders aloud how many Kevin Costner love scenes remained on the cutting floor. Beave reminisces about how things were so much better in the sixties, while Len sighs.

The hosts fall all over themselves praising the breathtaking flying scenes and top-notch cinematography, then dig deep to think up unfair criticisms and worse endings.

    Story Break: Gravity Lost

    Story Break: Gravity Lost

    In this podcast episode, our hosts set out to develop an original idea for a science fiction short film. They begin by discussing the Knight Rider Universe, V, and Teen Wolf before awkwardly rambling their way to the point. As they brainstorm ideas, they consider the visual and thematic elements that will make their film stand out, the importance of creating compelling characters and a strong narrative arc, as well as incorporating social commentary and exploring larger themes. By the end of the episode, the hosts have generated a number of exciting ideas and have laid the foundation for an engaging and thought-provoking science-fiction film.

    The Prince of Egypt - Knowledgeable, Reverential, Beautiful

    The Prince of Egypt - Knowledgeable, Reverential, Beautiful

    MOVIE DISCUSSION:

    Melanie joins Melvin in discussing one of her all time favorite flicks, and the two also get into what makes The Prince of Egypt far more palatable than most Bible or Christian-marketed media.

    Topics:

    • (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 42-minutes discussing a list of movies Christian's say are commonly known by other Christians such as Nacho Libre, The Book of Eli, and many others, and why we think they may be popular in the Christian community (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)
    • What familiarity do Melanie and Melvin have with the Book of Exodus?
    • John 1:1 makes it clear by stating that God's word is God Himself, as Christ also is God and therefore also God's word. So, when we create adaptions, we add degrees and opportunities for loss in translation when God's word is already authentic and reliable. This is a deeply important reality necessary for engaging in Biblical or Christian-marketed media: it is degrees away from God's literal word.
    • Moses' character, strangely, is sort of depicted as a combination between Jacob and Moses. Other historical figures such as Aaron and Miriam, Moses' brother and sister are also depicted differently from Scripture.
    • Getting into what's likely most memorable for people: the music!
    • Melanie riffs on the closing song "When You Believe" and how it's full of platitudes.
    • The Prince of Egypt stands apart from other Biblical or Christian-marketed materials, and the two discuss why that may be.
    • The Prince of Egypt is already a mature PG family flick, but Melvin feels it would have been benefitted by being a little nastier.

    The Legion, Masked and Anonymous, Mickey Rourke film discussion

    The Legion, Masked and Anonymous, Mickey Rourke film discussion

    A pair of equally unknown films from the Mickey oeuvre that I share details about;

    Masked and Anonymous (2003) has an all star cast and an appearance by Mickey Rourke that fares quite well, in particular sharing the screen with a smiling Bob Dylan.
    Cast includes, Jeff Bridges, Penelope Cruz, Joh Goodman, Christian Slater, Bruce Dern, Jessica Lange and more.

    The Legion (2019) additionally known as (Legionnaire's Trail) is based on a true story but is it a Roman soldier adventure worth watching?
    having now seen it twice, you be the judge after you listen to me discussing details including Mickey Rourke sporting fresh nails;
    also an eye patch remarkably similar to his Warhunt (2022) costume accessory.
