Meander Again: The PauseCast with Angie Arendt, on expectations and the Enneagram

Meander Again: The PauseCast with Angie Arendt, on expectations and the Enneagram

We kibbitz around a bit to begin with around unexpected connections in the supermarket, and that old game from the 1990s, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon… which was really about just how connected we all are in this great big world. We wrestle with expectations, the ones we have when coming new to the Enneagram, how the first level of exploration is seeking information, that’s all. The next level is about understanding those types, and those types in us….each of those types, not just our own homebase. And with time, and in community with others, we can drop in further and ask: What’s Next?

In this fast-paced world, the Enneagram is an invitation to pause and look at our stories so we can find ourselves. We explore this through story telling, and finding grace, and grief, and gratitude in the process. We dive into all of that today.

I hope you’ll stick with us as we explore. And please, share our work widely, give us a review or a drop us a few stars. If you have comments or questions, please send them to meanderingswithtrudy@gmail.com.

    Beer Before Fear #15 - Tremors (1990)

    Beer Before Fear #15 - Tremors (1990)

In an unexpected twist of events, this week, we're coming from separate locations, due to some inclement weather.  As such, that means that Erik wasn't able to bring a paired beer for this week's episode, so consider this our first 'BYOB' episode, where both of us are drinking what we bring!  And, funnily enough, both of us decided to go with an Imperial Stout, with Erik's coming from local favorite Three Taverns Brewery, while I cracks open a Milk and Cookies Stout courtesy of Wicked Weed Brewing company over in Asheville, NC.

This week's film?  One of the schlockiest B-movies of the 90's, Tremors!  This cult-classic stars Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward, and is essentially 'Jaws in the desert'.  It's an absolute blast, and features some of the best character development of any creature feature you'll come across.

So kick back and enjoy our conversation about two of our favorite things: cold beer and scary movies!

Follow us on Instagram, and say hi!

    Tremors

    Tremors
In the Sci-Fi corner, hailing from Perfection, Nevada, our next combatant in 'Dumpuary: Battle of the Genres' is Tremors! Ben, Noah, and Robbie discuss the January 1990 flop-turned-home-video-hit and homage to schlocky '50s creature features, starring Kevin Bacon. Directed by Ron Underwood, written by Underwood, Brent Maddock, and S. S. Wilson, and starring Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Michael Gross, and Reba McEntire.

Barguments: Bill & Ted v. Buckaroo Banzai v. Tremors v. Real Genius

Barguments: Bill & Ted v. Buckaroo Banzai v. Tremors v. Real Genius

Brian, Matt, Mike, Mike & Sean have a bargument about their favorite sci-fi films from childhood that became cult hits.  It’s a battle for the ages with The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension vs. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure vs. Real Genius vs. Tremors.  Beers are drank and mud is slung as they pour over the important questions.  Who are the real threats in Bill and Ted?  Can a house really be destroyed by popcorn? Which one of the Hong Kong Cavliers can “get it”?  And what exactly is coming out of that Graboid’s mouth?  4 movies enter, but only 1 will leave with any shreds of dignity.

    Ep 177 - Tremors (1990)

This week, as Evil Dice Tonight inches ever closer to it's inevitable demise, Lady Luck has given us a gift in the form of a giant worm and Kevin Bacon in the 1990 monster smash Tremors. A stinker in theaters, this little mover became a real underground hit. And we think it fucking rules. Pardon our French. Find us wherever you get your podcasts.

Smile - w/ Ant Coughlin and how Smile is Engaging, Derivative, and Irresponsible

Smile - w/ Ant Coughlin and how Smile is Engaging, Derivative, and Irresponsible

    MOVIE DISCUSSIONS:

Ant Coughlin joins Melanie & Melvin to discuss one of 2022's surprise horror hits: Smile! The classic "You-Die-In-7-Days" trope is refreshed for a new generation and the gang are here to get into what makes Smile so effective, so oppressive, and...  so irresponsible? That's right! So, press that play button and get listening!

    Topics:

    • (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 26-minutes discussing 8 massive "blockbusters" from 2023, several of which have financially flopped, and various theories as to why these $200 million+ films haven't connected with audiences. Meanwhile, Evil Dead Rise and Cocaine Bear are comfortably profitable! (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)
    • Smile is very blunt about its rotating themes of trauma, anxiety, and saving face. That worked for Ant the first time he saw the movie... until the ending happened.
    • When Melanie saw the trailer for Smile last year she audibly declared, "Nope!". She also said, "I was deeply invested, discouraged at the end, but throughout the film just terrified." and "I had a hard time sleeping.".
    • Smile has infrequent-yet-brutal violence. Melvin very much appreciated this, as well as the pervasive dour vibe.
    • Cristobal Tapia De Veer produced a stellar, terrifying soundtrack to accompany Smile. It goes hard!
    • A reviewer Melvin respects gave Smile a glaring 1/10 for being near-entirely derivative of better material. During Ant's second watch of the film he found himself agreeing.
    • Melvin largely understands most criticisms against Smile, including its irresponsibility regarding the way it handles its themes, but that doesn't matter to him when he really connects with a character's journey.
    • Caitlin Stasey is an absolute standout!
    • Getting into the controversial, irresponsible ending.
    • For Melanie, Smile was really difficult to watch. Melvin asks why.
