Again, another film taking liberties with the source material.  Some of it works, most does not.  Raul Julia hams it up like no other with his portrayal of M. Bison

"Street Fighter: The Movie" is a 1994 action film based on the popular video game franchise. The film follows Colonel Guile, played by Jean-Claude Van Damme, as he leads an international team of street fighters to rescue hostages from the evil warlord General M. Bison, portrayed by Raul Julia. The story unfolds on the fictional Shadaloo Island, where Bison plans to rule the world with his army. The film incorporates characters from the Street Fighter video game series, such as Chun-Li, Ryu, and Ken. Despite mixed reviews, the film has gained a cult following over the years for its campy and over-the-top portrayal of the iconic video game characters.

Did the 'Addams Family Values' surpass the original movie in terms of performance and critic appreciation? Don't miss out as we dissect every aspect of the 1993 sequel! We'll discuss the common pitfalls of sequels and how Addams Family Values managed to avoid them, and  compare the Addams Family sequel with other family features of the 90s.

Don't you wish the Addams Family franchise had a third instalment? We'll talk about the untapped potential of that missing third movie, and how Raul Julia's untimely passing in 1993 thwarted the possibility. We'll also envisage how the story might have unfolded and speculate on how the franchise would have adapted to the bubblegum pop world of the late 90s. Join us on this captivating venture into the realm of sequels and (possible) trilogies.

Street Fighter: The Movie feat. Devan Scott

Street Fighter: The Movie feat. Devan Scott

Vancouver-based filmmaker, educator, and podcaster Devan Scott joins to discuss Street Fighter: The Movie, based on the hugely popular Capcom video game franchise. Dismissed by both critics and fans of the game at the time of its release as a disaster, the film has since found a small but vocal faction of champions nearly 30 years later.

We discuss the film as an example of what Devan calls "The Anti-Masterpiece": A film that through no fault of its author becomes an astonishing work, either in spite or because of a distinct lack of conventional competence. Then, we discuss the pleasure of watching a film featuring a massive ensemble cast, none of whom can seem to agree on what kind of movie is being made - from Jean-Claude Van Damme's incidentially self-referential Colonel Guile to Raul Julia's genuinely great, Shakespearean take on despotic warlord General M. Bison. Finally, we discuss the film's inadvertantly prescient take on the American imperial project of the 21st century, and how its caroonishness and brazen stupidity feel right at home in a post-Trump America.

    Goood Morning Street Fighter!

    Goood Morning Street Fighter!

For you—today—the day Bison graced your favorite podcast listening app is the most important day of your life. For him, it was Wednesday. Join us for a conversation about the hilariously bad golden nugget of a film, Street Fighter: The Movie from 1994. Wah-CHOP~!

In this episode, the gloves are OFF. Well, not for Balrog, lol. Unfortunately, we secretly love almost everything about Street Fighter: The Movie. Raul Julia, as Bison, minimizes the damage with a fantastic performance, despite being terminally ill. On the other hand, our beloved Jean Claude Van Damme gave "one of his most wooden performances" ever. Together we question everything about this movie in an episode full of laughs, criticism, DNA Mutagens, and "that son-of-a-b*tch Bison." Taylor mentions the enormous number of jump cuts in the editing, Willie questions why this movie isn't rated more mature than PG-13, and Joseph gives the Gooood Morning Shadaloo announcement. Say, anybody out there know what to do if a Bison Trooper throws a grenade right in your face?

Here's a link to the full movie.

    ...about Tequila Sunrise (1988)

    ...about Tequila Sunrise (1988)

Robert Towne writes and directs a glossy film about a heroic coke dealer and his best friends, an LA cop and a Mexican drug lord.

Written & Directed by Robert Towne. Starring Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell, Michelle Pfeiffer, Raul Julia, J.T. Walsh, Arliss Howard, Arye Gross & Budd Boetticher

How is the world wrong about “Tequila Sunrise”?

From Andras: This whole enterprise is pretty wrong and yet, the performances (from Gibson, Julia & Pfieffer) and its amoral drives make it compelling in ways that few films can match. Kurt Russell in particular is in top form. This might be the performance that demands the most of him as an actor.

YNFA 035: Addams Family Values, or Family Ties Me Up, Ties Me Down

It’s time to turn the Thanksgiving tables on the colonizers, practice your tango, and think about Debbie’s needs as we get all together ooky with Barry Sonnenfeld’s Addams Family Values (1993). Should we give the incomparable Joan Cusack most of the credit for making this sequel better than the original? Or does it go to the incredibly precocious Christina Ricci, who might be the best child star of her generation? Are Angelica Huston and Raul Julia the ultimate relationship goals on-screen couple? And is Uncle Fester’s O face in this movie even creepier than Dan Ackroyd’s in Ghostbusters? All we know it that we want to find the kind of loving acceptance the Addams Family bestows so easily.
