    Midweek Mention... Pecker

    Midweek Mention... Pecker

Today we're taking a trip back to the late '90s to discuss a quirky, offbeat gem: Pecker (1998).

Directed by John Waters, Pecker is a comedy that tells the story of a young amateur photographer in Baltimore, played by Edward Furlong. Pecker, so nicknamed for his childhood habit of pecking at his food, captures pictures of his eccentric family and the colourful characters around his neighbourhood. When his work catches the eye of a New York art dealer, he's suddenly thrust into the world of high art - a world far removed from the close-knit community he loves.

Pecker is a classic Waters film in many ways, blending humour, irreverence, and a celebration of the unconventional. It’s a satirical look at the art world, poking fun at the pretentiousness of gallery culture while also offering a heartfelt homage to the oddities and charms of everyday life. Furlong brings a genuine, likable quality to his character, and the supporting cast, including Christina Ricci and Mary Kay Place, all contribute to the film's unique flavour.

As we dive into this review, we'll explore how Pecker captures the essence of the '90s indie film scene with its low-budget charm and how it stands out as a light-hearted critique of the often absurd art world. We'll talk about John Waters' distinct directorial style and how he's able to find beauty and humour in the most unexpected places.

So, dads, let's rewind to a simpler time in cinema, where a Baltimore teenager can become an overnight art sensation, and a sandwich shop can be a photography studio. As always, we’ll bring our dad's perspective to this cult classic, perhaps even sharing some of our own 'artistic' attempts from the '90s - brace yourselves for some hilarious throwback stories!

Join us on Bad Dads Film Review for a lively discussion on Pecker, a film that reminds us that art is everywhere and in everyone – sometimes in the most Pecker-ish ways! 📸🎥🎬👨‍👧‍👦

We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com.

Addams Family Values - In Defense of the Sequel: Christina Ricci's Big Break and and Christopher Lloyd's Heartache

Did the 'Addams Family Values' surpass the original movie in terms of performance and critic appreciation? Don't miss out as we dissect every aspect of the 1993 sequel! We'll discuss the common pitfalls of sequels and how Addams Family Values managed to avoid them, and  compare the Addams Family sequel with other family features of the 90s.

Don't you wish the Addams Family franchise had a third instalment? We'll talk about the untapped potential of that missing third movie, and how Raul Julia's untimely passing in 1993 thwarted the possibility. We'll also envisage how the story might have unfolded and speculate on how the franchise would have adapted to the bubblegum pop world of the late 90s. Join us on this captivating venture into the realm of sequels and (possible) trilogies.

The Addams Family - 1981: Raul Julia and the Macabre Marriage of Family Films and Gothic Horror

What if 'The Addams Family' was recast in 1981?

We're taking you on a speculative journey where we explore how this cult classic Halloween movie would have been transformed had it landed a decade earlier. We talk about the ins and outs of the kooky characters, the subtle balance between dark humor and wit, and the influence the 60s TV show would have on this hypothetical release. Plus, we bring in a fun angle with debates about potential casting choices - who would suit Gomez, Wednesday, and Uncle Fester best?

Now, picture in your mind’s eye the iconic roles played by the original cast - How could they change if portrayed by different actors from the 80s? Don't hold back your curiosity, because we are laying it all out. From character dissections to possible power-ups for Cory while choosing this cast, we have it all covered.  It's a blend of nostalgia, speculation, and hearty conversation that promises to entertain every Addams Family fan or movie enthusiast.

As hosts, we are not just stopping at examining individual characters and their traits but are also having some hearty debates about the casting. So, buckle up for this nostalgic ride that promises a generous dose of engaging discussions, a sprinkle of fun debates, and a whole lot of love for the 'mysterious and spooky' Addams Family!

Folge 1243: THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS - Eine Katze namens Dejavu

Folge 1243: THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS - Eine Katze namens Dejavu

    Sleepy Hollow (1999)

    Sleepy Hollow (1999)
In this week's episode things get a little bit spooky as we take a look at Tim Burton's darkest entry into his filmography to date. 1999's Sleepy Hollow is an ode to Burton's Disney animation roots and is a fascinatingly dark film with performances from Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci and Helena Bonham Carter that show how dark Burton can go without losing the whimsy we've come to love. Together we chat the film, it's journey to screen and so much more.
