From Dusk Till Dawn Review: Looking Back at Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Vampire Classic —Episode 129

From Dusk Till Dawn Review: Looking Back at Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Vampire Classic —Episode 129

Famed special effects technician Robert Kurtzman — best known for his work on films such as “Evil Dead 2” and “Night of the Creeps” — developed a story for a movie he wanted to make but he soon realized he didn’t quite have the chops to actually write it.

So he hired a young filmmaker named Quentin Tarantino to take on that job. Tarantino had started earning buzz around Hollywood for his “True Romance” and “Natural Born Killers” scripts but at the time he was still jockeying a register at a local video store.

The $1,500 that Kurtzman paid him to write the script allowed Tarantino to quit his job and focus on filmmaking full time but he also made Kurtzman agree to provide the effects for a little movie he was planning to write and direct called “Reservoir Dogs.”

A few years later following the release of his second film “Pulp Fiction,” Tarantino was the hottest director in Hollywood but rather than stepping behind the camera, he decided to play actor while his friend and fellow indie maverick Robert Rodriguez directed a film that ultimately plays out in two parts — the first involves a pair of bank-robbing brothers on the run from the law and the second features them engaged in a showdown with a group of vampires…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to make some crosses, bless the water and the ramblers will get rambling as we review the 1996 film “From Dusk Till Dawn”…

    A Scrooged Christmas Vacation

    A Scrooged Christmas Vacation

This ain't no trip to Lapland, and it's not your moms plum pudding. And it's most certainly not a hallucination brought on by Russian vodka poisoned by Chernobyl! What it is, is a Yuletide celebration to rival any stocking stuffer you're sure receive.

Let us never forget the sentiments of Frank Cross at this time of year. The most magical moment for humanity. Yule love it!

It's Christmas time in Hollis Queens, mom's cooking chicken.....oops, wrong miracle monologue.

It's Christmas Eve! It's the one night of the year when we all act a little nicer, we smile a little easier, we cheer a little more. For a couple of hours out of the whole year, we are the people that we always hoped we would be. It's really a sort of a miracle, because it happens every Christmas Eve. And if you waste that miracle, you're gonna burn for it, I know what I am talking about. You have to do something. You have to take a chance. You do have to get involved. There are people that are having trouble making their miracle happen. There are people that don't have enough to eat, or people that are cold. You can go out and say hello to these people. You can take an old blanket out of the closet and say "Here!", you can make them a sandwich and say "Oh, by the way, here!" I get it now! And if you give, then it can happen, then the miracle can happen to you! It's not just the poor and the hungry, it's everybody's who's gotta have this miracle! And it can happen tonight for all of you! If you believe in this spirit thing, the miracle will happen and then you'll want it to happen again tomorrow. You won't be one of these bastards who says "Christmas is once a year and it's a fraud", it's NOT! It can happen every day, you've just got to want that feeling. And if you like it and you want it, you'll get greedy for it! You'll want it every day of your life and it can happen to you! I believe in it now! I believe it's going to happen to me now! I'm ready for it! And it's great. It's a good feeling, it's really better than I've felt in a long time. I'm ready. Have a Merry Christmas, everybody.

    Shitter's full.

From Dusk Till Dawn feat. Roxana Hadadi

From Dusk Till Dawn feat. Roxana Hadadi

Vulture critic Roxana Hadadi returns to Hit Factory for her hat trick to discuss Robert Rodriguez's 'From Dusk Till Dawn', a rambunctious genre hybrid that blends elements of crime pictures, westerns, and gory exploitation horror to uproarious effect.

We discuss the ascendancy of Rodriguez and screenwriter Quentin Tarantino during the mid-90s, the undeniable magnetism of a tribal-tattooed George Clooney (in his big screen debut), and ponder the significance of that eye-popping final shot.

Cape Fear

BONUS: Natural Born Killers (Hit Factory x Nostalgia Trap)

David Parsons from Nostalgia Trap Podcast joins us for a deep dive int Oliver Stone's maximalist 1994 thriller 'Natural Born Killers' starring Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis. We discuss the movie's complicated and controversial legacy, how it (sometimes) trancsends its cartoonish pastiche to paint a portrait of American violence and media sensationalism, and how it fits into a broader conversation about problematic and difficult art that is still resonant today.

    Whip It with Natalie Torres

Jordan and Brooke are joined by screenwriter Nat Torres ("Our Flag Means Death") for a delightful throwback movie, helmed by none other than director Drew Barrymore! We discuss the need for a roller-blading cinematic renaissance, one of Elliot Page's best and maybe queerest roles (confirmed by Drew Gregory), the wide world of Texas-set films, and how we'd all secretly like Juliette Lewis to shove us in a locker.

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico...it very well may be your last! Our latest look at crime cinema has us trudging through the muck of Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, director Sam Peckinpah's unforgiving neo-western from 1974. But before we descend into oblivion, we load up a Blue Plate Special where we discuss Kathryn Bigelow's appropriately titled Strange Days, parse the latest David Cronenberg release Crimes of the future, and celebrate the dearly departed character acting legend Phillip Baker Hall. Upon eventually taking the off-ramp to Hell, we consider the game changing filmography of Peckinpah, the beauty of Warren Oates, and weigh what exactly today's film in question adds to the genre complexion of New Hollywood's cynicism.
