The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E1

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E1

Welcome to 2023 and Season 6 of the Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Episode 1 got going on 5 Jan 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 with a track called 'Emaheeval' by Desperado.  Desperado was a post-Twisted Sister band comprising Dee Snider, Bernie Tormé, Clive Burr, and Marc Russell.  It's an excellent album that was shelved in a nasty bit of spite by Bob Krasnow and it’s a pity because if it had been released at the time it would have done well.  Dee has done OK though.  Next up Aerosmith with Walk This Way, what a riff!!  Joe Perry at his finest.  We continued with some Thundermother out of Stockholm, who are doing a great job of paying reparations for the music ABBA subjected the world to in the '70s, nice work ladies, and thank you 😊.

We had a bit of US Punk with The Offspring and Anti-Flag and then went back into the late ‘80s for some White Lion and Bulletboys with 'Kid With a 1000 Faces' and 'Badlands' respectively.   Australia's finest gave us a track called ‘This Means War’ which reminded me of Blue Suede Shoes for some reason, I am talking about ACDC of course.  From there we went bluesy with Rory Gallagher and South Africa’s very own Dan Patlansky who has done so well with his latest release Shelter of Bones.  Next, back to Australia for some Electric Mary and a track called ‘One in a Million’, then we went to France for Laura Cox with a song called 'Australian Rock', it's confusing I know, all this Aussie stuff.  Laura Cox is really putting out some good stuff, check her out.  Metallica and Hellyeah made things heavy again and then we took some time out to listen to an absolute ‘70s Rock Classic in the form of ‘Can’t You hear Me Knocking’ off Sticky Fingers.  This masterpiece from The Rolling Stones marks the start of the plan to play more ‘70’s over 7 min classics in Season 6.

We hit the last hour with some UK Punk, ‘Mary of the Fourth Form’ from The Boomtown Rats and ‘Duchess’ from the Stranglers.  We had Thunder off their latest release Dopamine and then a track from Sakis Tolis off the Among the Fires of Hell album, we stayed heavy with Soilwork and a track called ‘Harvest Spine’.  There was a lot from the ladies on this show, we heard a  band called Love Bites out of Japan, The Donnas, and something newish from Brody Dalle and her band The Distillers.  It comes from an album called Live In Lockdown.  We went out blazing with Obituary and the title track off the forthcoming ‘Dying of Everything’.

Artists featured:  Desperado, Aerosmith. Leslie West, Thunder Mother, The L.A. Maybe, The Offspring, Anti-Flag, Bulletboys, White Lion, ACDC, Jorn, Rory Gallagher, Dan Patlansky, Electric Mary, Laura Cox, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Hellyeah, Rammstein, Marilyn Manson, Dino Jelusic, Buckcherry, The Rolling Stones, The Boomtown Rats, The Stranglers, Thunder, The Dead Daisies, Sakis Tolis, Soilwork, Rush, Pride & Glory, Love Bites, Blue Scream, Man As Machine, The Distillers, The Donnas, Obituary, Eluveitie.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E31

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E31

Episode 31 of Season 5 went out live on Rebel Rock radio on 4 August 2022.  This show is as unprepared as it gets, let's see what happens.  We kicked off with Bad Company and ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy, then into Dave Hause off one of my favourite albums of all time titled 'Bury Me In Philly'.  The track we played was called ‘The Flinch’.  From there we sped it up a bit with ‘Speed Demon’ from Keel, by now I was hating what I had in the playlist and desperately looking for a way out.  By request, we took in some of Australia's finest in the form of James Reyne and Cold Chisel with ‘Fall of Rome’ and ‘When the War is Over’ respectively.  The Cold Chisel track should cause some piloerection, the first two verses sung by guitarist Ian Moss and then the sheer power of Jimmy Barnes taking over from verse three.  I love the way Barnsey does this, standing back and letting someone else have a go just increases the magnificence of his voice.  It’s the contrast that does it, and then of course Don Walker on piano.

This week's Rock Review featured Rush and the last track 'The Wreckers' cut off violently due to the time slot allocated so to make amends and also by request we listened to it in its awesome entirety.  Things by now were picking up with some very special people tuned in.  We checked out a band called Ignite and another called Windowpane, two relatively unknown bands making some awesome music.  Next, we popped over to Germany for some Rammstein and some Accept.  We checked some new stuff from Alter Bridge off their forthcoming album Pawns and Kings, the track was called 'Silver Tongue' and we also listened to 'Times Like These' off the brand new Five Finger Death Punch release Afterlife.  A couple of Alices’ in the form of Alice in Chains and Alice Cooper were followed by classic 80’s metal from Van Halen and ACDC.

We wound it down with four South African bands, starting with a request for Kobus! with Kultuurfeestent and then Jack Hammer, The Black Cat Bones, and L.A. Cobra. The Bones in particular sounded amazing with their cover of Bob Dylan's ‘I Shall be Released.  We stayed mellow and wound down this very random show with some Black Stone Cherry off the Kentucky album and Kid Rock with ‘Don’t Quit’ off his latest album released earlier this year titled Bad Reputation.

Artists featured:  Bad Company, Dave Hause, Desperado, Keel, Danko Jones, James Reyne, Cold Chisel, Destruction, Thundermother, The Gaslight Anthem, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Rory Gallagher, Ignite, Windowpane, Rammstein, Accept, Alter Bridge, Five Finger Death Punch, Audioslave, Alice in Chains, Alice Cooper, Virgin Steele, ACDC, Van Halen, Candlebox, Kiss, David Bowie, Kobus!, Jack Hammer, The Black Cat Bones, L.A. Cobra, Bruce Dickinson, Black Stone Cherry, Kid Rock

    Ep 83: Jim Ed Norman

    Ep 83: Jim Ed Norman

This week, Chris sits down with Grammy award-winning, absolute legend Jim Ed Norman! From his start in the 70s as a composer, arranger, conductor + player on The Eagles' iconic "Desperado" and "Hotel California" records, to his work as an A&R man / label head at Warner Nashville and Curb Records putting artists like Faith Hill and Randy Travis on the map, Jim Ed's career is one of the most eclectic we've seen. He was one of the first Nashville execs to work towards signing more Black artists in the 80s, and was also a pioneer of expanding the Americana movement in the 90s. To have a career that stretches over numerous decades is not an easy feat to achieve - and Jim Ed remains active in the music world today, earning his first Grammy just last year. He’s currently reunited with The Eagles to lead their 70-piece orchestra on the Hotel California arena tour, so be sure to grab your tickets after you dive into this episode. Settle in for some great stories and industry wisdom in this interview, and thanks for listening!

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E49

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E49

S4E49 aired on 9 Dec 2021 on Rebel Rock Radio.  It is probably one of the few episodes that haven't featured heavy hitters such and Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, ACDC, Metallica, or Guns 'n' Roses.  So, in that respect, it is quite different.   We kicked off with 'Bat Country' from Avenged Sevenfold.  It's a track that pays homage to Hunter S. Thompson's essential reading masterpiece Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas  Then we had a few topical songs such as 'Get Me Out of this Place' by Rose Tattoo and 'Heat Wave' from Thundermother.  Buckcherry and Boston bought some party to the proceedings.  Hellyeah's cover of the Phil Collins hit 'I Don't Care Anymore' made the point that Covid really needs to move on now, it's time to get on with life.

There were a number of regular TSORR listeners tuned in and I aimed a couple of tunes in their direction, Rory Gallagher, The Jam, The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, the brand New Volbeat track Shotgun Blues, and Stone Sour's 'Your God' were all dedicated to people who join me week after week. I am very grateful to you guys.  SA music included Koos Kombuis's scathing attack on the SA situation with 'The Fokkol Song', as I pointed out that was recorded in 2010 and things have only got worse :-).  Johnathan Martin showed once again that he is the most underrated musician in the country.  Johnathan deserves way more success than he has had, his songwriting, singing, and guitar playing are world-class.  We also checked out The Color Blew and Jasper Dan.

Highlights of the show for me were the seriously heavy duo provided by Machine Head and Exodus and then the rather subdued ending provided by 8 minutes of Neil Young, a very moving Springsteen track, and 'Backwards Traveler' from Wings' London Town album.  the show ended fittingly with 'Out of Time', a 1966 release from The Rolling Stones.

Artists featured: Avenged Sevenfold, Extreme, Ozzy Osbourne, Rose Tattoo, Thundermother, Desperado, Buckcherry, Boston, Seether, Hellyeah, Live, Machine Head, Exodus, Alice Cooper, Hinder, Led Zeppelin, Greta Van Fleet, The Jam, Stiff Little Fingers, The Clash, Volbeat, Black Label Society, Stone Sour, Rory Gallagher, Koos Kombuis, Johnathan Martin, Jasper Dan, The Color Blew, Warrior Soul, Skid Row, Edguy, KK’s Priest, Bruce Springsteen, Wings, The Rolling Stones.

    Desperado - Movie Review

    Desperado - Movie Review

Rob Lee & Rudy discuss the 1995 Robert Rodriguez film starring Antonio Banderas, Desperado.

Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) plunges headfirst into the dark border underworld when he follows a trail of blood to the last of the infamous Mexican drug lords, Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida), for an action-packed, bullet-riddled showdown. With the help of his best friend (Steve Buscemi) and a beautiful bookstore owner (Salma Hayek), the Mariachi tracks Bucho, takes on his army of desperados, and leaves a trail of blood of his own.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E10

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E10

S4E10 aired at 7 pm on 11 March 2021.  The show kicked off with Joe Bonamassa and a track called Bridge To Better Days which is something we should all be trying to build.   Breakdown by G 'n' R really went down well, one of those songs you really feel like listening to and it doesn't disappoint.

There was plenty to get your teeth into, punk from UK Subs, Ramones and the Clash, classics from ACDC, Megadeth and Black Sabbath, metal from Parkway Drive, Iced Earth and Pantera, and South African stuff from LA Cobra, Deadline, Rasskopleef! and The Uninvited.  Raaskopleef! was a first not only for TSORR but for radio in general.  It's a sort of cult band formed in Wellington in the Western Cape and this particular track called Elektrisiteit is a translation of Hunter S. Thompson's essay ' Electricity' .   Hearing Bon Jovi's 'You Give Love a Bad Name' again was great, it has been ages, great guitar work from Richie Sambora, no wonder they got so huge.  Other than that, a nice melancholy bit in the middle featuring Powderfinger, Hinder, Linkin Park, and Don Henley, and then we smashed it all up with 'Crazy Bitch' by Buckcherry, good times indeed.

Artists featured:  Joe Bonamassa, ACDC, Y&T, Guns 'n' Roses, Foo Fighters, Alice Cooper, Def Leppard, Disturbed, The Bloodhound Gang, Parkway Drive, Warren Haynes, Nirvana, Iced Earth, Megadeth, Bon Jovi, Tesla, The Clash, Ramones, UK Subs, Whitesnake, Desperado, LA Cobra, Deadline, Powderfinger, Hinder, Linkin Park, Don Henley, Buckcherry, The Dead Daisies, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Raaskopleef!, The Distillers, Black Sabbath, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pantera, The Uninvited

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E6

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E6

This show was tough, it went out on 11 Feb 2021 at 7 pm and I had just returned from an overseas trip and was running on very little sleep.  It was put together very quickly and started off fittingly with Thin Lizzy's 'The Boys Are Back In Town'.  After that it was a few more from the 70's in the form of ACDC and Bad Company and we were off into the usual TSORR fare.

A highlight for me was Porcupine Tree's Radioactive Toy, Steven Wilson at his best in my opinion.  I also enjoyed the contrast of going from Mastodon to Neil Young.   While overseas I saw a most interesting documentary about Suzi Quatro so we listened to her and also to Lita Ford as I have just finished her book Living Like a Runaway.  There is some hectic stuff in that book.  My view of Tony Iommi took a hit I have to say.   I played a track off the new Foo Fighters and another off Too mean to Die, Accepts' latest album.

All in all, it was a bit different to normal, no SA stuff at all which is a first and only one Aussie band.  This wasn't planned, I just didn't get a chance to review the show before I went on air so I will fix that next week.

Artists featured:  Thin Lizzy, ACDC, Bad Company, Adrenaline Mob, Royal Blood, Voices of Extreme, Great White, Slaughter, UFO, Desperado, Marilyn Manson, Halestorm, Lita Ford, The Raven Age, Suzi Quatro, The Sweet, Mastodon, Neil Young, David Bowie, The Damned, Stiff Little Fingers, Porcupine Tree, Alice in Chains, Shinedown, Kiss, Five Finger Death Punch, The Rolling Stones, Metallica, White Wizzard, Night Ranger, Accept, Foo Fighters, Nashville Pussy, Volbeat, Barry McGuire
