    4 - Rosemary's Baby with Libba Bray

    4 - Rosemary's Baby with Libba Bray

In Episode 4 of Our First Fears, No. 1 New York Times Bestselling author Libba Bray takes my hand to ring the doorbell of the Bramford Apartments in New York City, where Rosemary Woodhouse lives with her husband Guy and, possibly, a cabal of evil cultists, in Roman Polanski’s 1968 film, Rosemary’s Baby.

Our chat ranges from recent US supreme court decisions, to the cultural impact this film had over the following decades, from witch hunts, to satanic-panic, and the repetition of atrocities against women throughout history, as well as the pervasiveness and popularity of the “religious horror” sub-genre, and finally, how New York City, as a character, so often inspires terror.

Fun stuff, right? I promise it’s a good one!

Peter Bart (Legendary Studio Executive, Producer, & Journalist) on Shaping Modern Hollywood

Peter Bart (Legendary Studio Executive, Producer, & Journalist) on Shaping Modern Hollywood

Kevin is joined by Hollywood journalist and studio executive, Peter Bart.

Peter Bart, Journalist and Hollywood Executive

Over an influential career spanning over 50 years, Peter Bart has played a key role in shaping modern Hollywood. He began as a journalist at The New York Times before becoming a studio executive at Paramount in the late 1960s and 70s, overseeing movies like The Godfather, Rosemary’s Baby, and Chinatown. He later served as Editor-in-Chief of Variety for nearly 30 years. Today, Bart continues to be a prominent voice through his writing for Deadline. With his vast experience and perspective, Bart remains a living legend in the world of movies.

    Early career in journalism (05:16)
Peter shares how he got his start in journalism by asking outrageous questions. The New York Times sent Bart to Hollywood to cover the rise of TV, but he was drawn to the fascinating economics of the movie business.

Getting Into the Movie Business (08:15)
Bart became friends with Bob Evans, who brought him to Paramount as head of production despite no film experience. They reinvented the studio by making artistic, character-driven films based on novels vs big-budget spectacles.

    Reinventing Hollywood (13:09)
Bart bought rights to novels and quality scripts like The Godfather. He shares how he wanted to make it an art film, but its popularity pushed the studio to make it more commercial. Bart shares how he and Evans often made movies without studio oversight in order to take creative risks on movies like Rosemary’s Baby, Paper Moon, and Harold and Maude.

    Drama with Frank Sinatra (22:43)
Peter shares a behind-the-scenes story from Rosemary’s Baby. Director Roman Polanski’s demanding style angered Frank Sinatra, husband of the film's star Mia Farrow.

Returning to Journalism with Variety (27:01)
Bart shares that after 18 years making films, he wanted to tell the story of Hollywood’s shifts - filmmaker power transitioning to dealmakers/businessmen running studios.

The Future of Theatrical Films (43:09)
Kevin and Peter discuss the value of the theatrical experience. As the way people watch movies is changing, Bart believes audience energy hugely enhances films. He shares how the new generation is losing out by only streaming at home.

Tune in to hear Peter Bart share invaluable insights from his legendary career spanning studio executive leadership and entertainment. He provides a unique window into the reinvention of Hollywood in the 1960s and 70s, greenlighting seminal films like The Godfather. Peter makes an impassioned case for retaining the irreplaceable theatrical experience. With unmatched experience across epochs of the film industry, Peter's perspectives are a must-listen for any cinema fan.

...about John Farrow with Marilyn Ann Moss

...about John Farrow with Marilyn Ann Moss

Marilyn Moss joins the podcast to discuss “The Farrows of Hollywood: Their Dark Side Of Paradise” her new biography of John Farrow, a director whose films deserve a re-appraisal and whose life is a frightening mystery.

How is the world wrong about John Farrow

From Andras: At first I wanted to talk to Marilyn Moss about her book because of my interest in Woody Allen. All I knew about John Farrow was that he sounded like the monster Mia often portrays Allen as, but once I started checking out John Farrow’s films like “Alias Nick Beale”, “His Kind of Woman”, “Night Has A Thousand Eyes”, “Two Years Before The Mast”, “Five Came Back” and of course, “The Big Clock” (which I’d already seen), it became evident to me that Farrow was an important and exciting director whose elegance, frankness, and odd lyrical spiritualism opened me up to a new (for me) cinematic voice.

ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968) Episode 67: It Means the World of Horror to Me™ Bonus

ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968) Episode 67: It Means the World of Horror to Me™ Bonus

    WoHo's!

It's a special It Means the World of Horror to Me episode!

Original Friend of the ShowTM, Quinn was nice enough to come by with one of her favorite horror films: ROSEMARY'S BABY from 1968. We spoil the hell out of it, as per, so if you don't want it spoiled, have a watch or rewatch before you listen.

We are both such fans of the cinematography, the performances, the suspense and creep factors built on a toxic marriage, and the already tenuous proposition of pregnancy! What say you, is pregnancy magical or is it horrifying?

Some other topics covered: The Pollening that occurs this time of year in NC, Sidney Blackmer's connection to our home state, smoking on the Dick Cavett show, dream sequences, ovulation cycles, the abandonment of the Hays Code, and who is the obvious winner of the YOU FOOL award for ROSEMARY's BABY.

Coming up next on the main is Creepy Kid films. We will cover THE ORPHAN from the US and GOODNIGHT, MOMMY, which I almost could not finish the first time I watched it!

WoHos, please get in touch and remember:
    We love you and
    DON'T go into the basement!

    ...about Deconstructing Harry (1997)

    ...about Deconstructing Harry (1997)

What Charlie Chaplin did to Adolf Hitler in “The Great Dictator” Woody Allen does to himself in “Deconstructing Harry”.

Written & Directed by Woody Allen. Starring Woody Allen, Hazelle Goodman, Judy Davis, Elisabeth Shue, Kirstie Alley, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Julie Kavner, Demi Moore, Amy Irving, Caroline Aaron, Mariel Hemingway, Tobey Maguire, Robin Williams, Stanley Tucci, Bob Balaban, Eric Bogosian, Billy Crystal

How is the world wrong about Deconstructing Harry?

From Andras: Woody Allen’s films are often used, misleadingly, as evidence to justify the accusations against him. A film like “Deconstructing Harry” does the opposite. In Allen’s most direct cinematic response to the end of his relationship with Mia Farrow he portrays himself as a pill popping, booze swilling, womanizer who brings misery upon those around him by using their lives for his art. A guilty man might be expected to portray himself as innocent but Allen seems to be saying, “It’s true. I am horrible. Just not the way you think”. This is not only the response of an innocent man. It’s the response of a great artist.
