Ep. 51 The Last Picture Show

Ep. 51 The Last Picture Show

Come join me and writer/comedian/actress Ingrid Palomo on this nostalgic cinematic ride!

For all the cinephiles and movie enthusiasts out there, picture this - you are about to be taken on a journey back in time, to the era of the classic 1971 film, 'The Last Picture Show.' Yes, that's right! We're going to explore the magic of this iconic film and its director, Peter Bogdanovich, in great detail. And here's the cherry on top - we have a special guest who shares a unique personal experience with Bogdanovich, giving us an insider’s view of the movie industry. We'll also look at the awards the film garnered and the interesting fact that Bogdanovich edited the entire film but didn't take credit for it.

This swift journey doesn't stop there. We also get to chat about the significance of physical movie theaters, and specifically, we spotlight the Vista Theater in Los Angeles. We'll navigate the effects of TV on movie theaters, the attempts to create unique experiences with 70mm and 3D, and also touch on the potential of virtual reality for movies. How does the satisfaction of owning a movie on physical media compare to streaming it? We will discuss that too. Preserving movies and appreciating the beauty of a physical piece of art is a rare and delightful treat that we'll unwrap together.

Lastly, we step into the comparison zone where we pit 'The Last Picture Show' against movies such as 'Roma' and 'Mank' on Netflix. How does the preservation of digital media stack up against film? Is there a difference in the experience when shooting on film versus digital? We'll answer these questions and more. This episode is a treasure trove for anyone who loves the magic of classic cinema and is curious about the artistry behind creating unforgettable films.

The Big Lebowski feat. Jake Tropila

The Big Lebowski feat. Jake Tropila

Film writer, editor, and podcaster Jake Tropila joins from Los Angeles to discuss the Coen Brothers' 1998 comedy 'The Big Lebowski', starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Though middlingly received both critically and commercially upon release, the film has gone on to become a genuine cult classic, launching a cottage industry of fan screenings, conventions, and even a religion.

We discuss the film's patchwork of influences, including larger-than-life characters withing the Coens' orbit and the works of author Raymond Chandler, especially as adapted by Robert Altman for his 1973 film 'The Long Goodbye'. Then we discuss the film's unrivaled cast, including a superb John Goodman, who turns in an awards-caliber performance as the gun-toting, militant bowling enthusiast Walter Sobchak. Finally, we discuss the film's windy, inarticulable plot, and the way that its mechanics might conceal a deeper level of criticism about the sociopolitical landscape of America on the eve of The End of History.

    Midweek Mention... K-PAX

    Midweek Mention... K-PAX

Inspired by the recent testimony of respected former defence official David Grusch, who confirmed before a congressional comittee that the US has been operating an extra-terrestrial crash retrieval and reverse engineering programme for decades, Dan chose the 2001 sci-fi K-PAX for us to cast our eye over.

Iain Softley brings an adaptation of Gene Brewer's 1995 novel telling the tale of "prot" (Kevin Spacey), committed to the Psychiatric Institute of Manhattan and placed into the care of wearied workaholic, doctor Mark Powell (Jeff Bridges). Claiming to be an extraterrestrial from the planet 'K-PAX', Powell attempts to gently pierce prot's delusion by piecing together his backstory even as he comes to doubt exactly what he has uncovered. Both leads are excellent - Spacey does smugly vulnerable to perfection - and with an interestingly ambiguous ending and themes about hope and who we turn to for spiritual guidance, even an initially reluctant Sidey found himself engaged by this one.

Jeff Bridges and Daughter Isabelle on Nourishing Family REDUX

Jeff Bridges and Daughter Isabelle on Nourishing Family REDUX

Why is it so important to nourish ourselves and each other? On this very special episode, we revisit our conversation with actor and musician Jeff Bridges and his daughter, Mother’s Empowerment Coach Isabelle Bridges. The father-daughter duo talk about the importance of nourishing relationships and fighting child hunger.

“As you get older, you realize that the value you have and what’s really precious in life are these family relationships,” Jeff says about the inspiration and process of their children’s book, ‘Daddy Daughter Day.’

“I remember reading the Daddy Daughter Day story to you Dad, and you saying, with sparkly eyes, ‘we should turn this into a book, and I will illustrate it,’” recalls Isabelle. “When we have our children, we want to nourish them, and then we go unnourished ourselves. My mission is to help the moms feel nourished on the inside so they have a wellspring to give them,” she continues about her work helping mothers take care of their own needs.

Jeff is the official spokesperson of the No Kid Hungry campaign. “[Child hunger] an issue that’s got a lot of hope to it. We can really end childhood hunger here in our country,” he believes.

    Episode 200: 200th Episode Spectacular

    Episode 200: 200th Episode Spectacular

We are 200 episodes in and we start by looking at one of the most important directors in genre cinema. Steven Spielberg may not be the first director that comes to mind when it comes to indie or genre films, but if it were not for Jaws, the entire landscape of film would look different.  Despite his pedigree, his movies are not doing as well as they used to? Are we surprised?

Spielberg's far-reaching influence is felt strongly in the first movie we cover this week. Tintorera from 1977 claims to be about a killer shark, but it would be more accurate to call it an orgy movie that happens to have a shark in it. The smell of baby oil fills the air as we talk about possibly the most perverted tiger shark ever, history's most well adjusted throuple, and some unironically well done underwater scenes.

We also take a trip to Rancho Deluxe with Jeff Daniels and Sam Watterson. This 1975 movie is about a pair of cattle rustlers who come up with a scheme that will earn them a big score. The film came out during an interesting time. Westerns were on the decline but the hysteria surrounding truck drivers had yet to hit America. Rancho Deluxe does not always seem to know what it wants to be, but it also does not care.

This leads to a grounded story that has some amazing moments of over the top acting, a great performance from Harry Dean Stanton, and Jimmy Buffett playing one of the best songs of his career. Rancho Deluxe is about independence, not taking things too seriously, and just living your life.

Our 200th episode also includes an interview with filmmakers Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson. The two are known for some of the most mind-bending genre films of the past decade. They talk about their latest movie, Something in the Dirt, shooting in Los Angeles, and non-traditional characters.

All this, plus the latest genre news and the winner of our Alienoid giveaway!
