Why pop punk (and emo) failed to stay mainstream

This week on Unplugged, Tyler and John dive headfirst into this week's news and a handpicked topic to debate.

    • Sum 41 dethrones Blink-182! After 22 years, Sum 41 blasts back to the top of the charts with their song "Landmines," knocking Blink-182's "One More Time" out of the No.1 spot on Billboard's Alternative Airplay Chart. Are we surprised?
    • Hardcore band fires singer... for estrogen? In a story that's sure to leave you scratching your head, Tyler and John unpack the bizarre tale of a hardcore band firing their vocalist for allegedly dosing the bassist with estrogen. Is this real? We use ChatGPT to find out.
    • Why do we think pop punk is no longer "mainstream'? Pop punk (and emo) have seen a resurgence of sorts over the last couple of years. With only a select few artists hitting the mainstream during that time, why has pop punk failed to stay?

The hosts also explore the shocking revelation that Talking Heads turned down an $80 million offer to reunite for festivals in 2024. The episode concludes with a humorous discussion about Kid Rock's claim of getting more "ass" than Mark McGrath, with McGrath himself confirming the statement. What MGK should change his name to

This week, we cover killer whales' indifference to metal music while attacking boats and The Hives' possibly accidental ingenious move to 'franchise' their brand for cover bands. We also talked about Billie Joe Armstrong's explanation for Green Day's avoidance of political music. Then there was news about MGK contemplating changing his name, so we asked ChatGPT to come up with some new names he should go by. Somewhere in all of this we also pick who we'd rather marry: Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera.

Uh-oh... Did When We Were Young Fest f*ck up?

This week, When We Were Young Fest announced their 2024 emo lineup. This time it was with an emphasis on bands playing their respective iconic album in full. However, social media noticed there was one glaring issue with the lineup: it heavily lacked a female presence. With social media ablaze, When We Were Young Fest suddenly entered damage control and started announcing new bands to the lineup... and those new bands all happened to be female-fronted groups. So what say you? Do you think When We Were Young Fest messed up and are now trying to save face? This episode has us debating these exact questions.

Elsewhere in the episode, we discuss Charlotte Sands' new song "pity", Green Day having a good week, and Spotify's new royalty payment policy that probably isn't as bad as most initially thought.

What's wrong with the new blink-182 album?

In this episode, John and Tyler get very critical as they review blink-182's latest no. 1 album, "One More Time...". There are a lot of thoughts out there on this record, especially when it comes to the drums. But after speculating that blink-182 released two different versions of the record which sounded noticeably different, they graded the vocals, the music, the production, and the overall album. They also discuss where the album ranks in blink-182's catalog. And at the end, they pick their Top 3 tracks.
