In our latest ramble, we play armchair critics dissecting other podcasts, because clearly, we're the epitome of refined judgment. Shifting gears to the MCU, we stumble through discussions about "The Marvels" and Deadpool, attempting profound insights with the grace of a giraffe on roller skates. The topic meanders to Carl Weathers and Star Wars, as we navigate the vast galaxy with the expertise of someone reading a star map for the first time. Finally, we wrap it up with a dash of music talk, showcasing our limited knowledge in yet another arena of questionable expertise.

174: Behind the Music Videos | Volume 1

174: Behind the Music Videos | Volume 1

The time has come. I finally recorded an episode on my own. A first time here on the show. It was hard deciding although I did do an internet poll and  'top music videos of the 90s' won.

This took me a while to get in the mood to do but I selected these videos not really as random but as a good representation of all these varying types of narratives that I loved in videos during my teenage years. I did some behind the scenes research and cruised some message boards to dig deeper. I basically talk about what these meant to me at a time when the art of the music video meant so much.

Moose Blood return. Are they here to stay? + Green Day’s new album: Good or Bad?

Moose Blood return. Are they here to stay? + Green Day’s new album: Good or Bad?

In this episode, Tyler and John reveal the new name that will replace the 3-year-old The All Punked Up Podcast title as a new era of this podcast begins. After the reveal, the boys discuss their thoughts on Green Day's newly released album Saviors. Although this band is one of their favorites, they have different views on this album.

Moving on to the news, they discuss a few reunion announcements, Best Buy ceasing the sales of CDs and DVDs, MGK getting hate for his new signature guitar look, Smashing Pumpkins receiving over 10K applications to be the band's new guitarist, and finally Moose Blood announcing their return from hiatus after “inappropriate behavior” allegations came about in 2018.

Helmet - Page Hamilton - Midwest Mixtape Podcast

Helmet - Page Hamilton - Midwest Mixtape Podcast

Sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn , Reynolds Landscaping & Lawncare, Everest Counseling (Farmington, Mo)

Helmet, the iconic alternative metal band that emerged from New York City in the late 1980s, stands as a testament to the power of artistic innovation within the realm of heavy music. Founded by frontman and guitarist Page Hamilton, Helmet has left an indelible mark on the landscape of rock and metal with their unique blend of raw aggression, intricate songwriting, and thought-provoking lyrics.

The band's journey began in 1989 when they released their debut album, "Strap It On," on the independent label Amphetamine Reptile Records. This album, marked by its deceptively simple yet highly effective riffing, immediately caught the attention of fans and critics alike. Page Hamilton's fractured soloing style and distinct vocal delivery set Helmet apart from the burgeoning alternative music scene, where they stood as a harbinger of a new era in heavy music.

Helmet's breakthrough came with their second album, "Meantime," released in 1992 on Interscope Records. This album showcased Hamilton's songwriting prowess and cemented the band's status as a heavy-hitting force in the industry. Tracks like "Unsung" and "In the Meantime" became anthems for a generation, and the album itself achieved Gold certification, signifying its enduring impact.

What sets Helmet apart from many of their peers is their dedication to musical intricacy and innovation. Page Hamilton, a trained jazz guitarist with a background in avant-garde music, brought a level of sophistication to their heavy sound that was unparalleled. The band's use of drop-D tuning, unconventional time signatures, and dissonant chords created a sonic landscape that challenged the conventions of heavy music. Songs like "Wilma's Rainbow" and "Rollo" exemplify this complexity, offering listeners a glimpse into the band's commitment to pushing the boundaries of their genre.

After releasing two more albums, "Betty" in 1994 and "Aftertaste" in 1997, the original lineup of Helmet disbanded in 1998. However, Page Hamilton's artistic journey was far from over. He continued to explore various musical avenues, collaborating with artists like David Bowie, Caspar Brötzmann, and Wire, among others. This period of exploration allowed him to expand his sonic palette and further solidify his status as a musical innovator.

In 2004, Hamilton reformed Helmet with an all-new lineup, releasing several albums, including "Size Matters" (2004), "Monochrome" (2006), "Seeing Eye Dog" (2010), and "Dead To The World" (2016). These albums demonstrated that Helmet's spirit of innovation and uncompromising intensity remained intact, even with a new lineup.

In 2023, Helmet announced the release of their ninth studio album, "Left," set to be released on November 10th on earMUSIC. This announcement was accompanied by the "Look Left Tour," taking the band through various regions of North America. It marked their first tour since the pandemic, and fans eagerly anticipated hearing new material from this legendary band.

Helmet's journey through the realms of heavy music and artistic innovation has been nothing short of remarkable. Page Hamilton's unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and challenging conventions has led to the creation of music that transcends genres and continues to captivate audiences. Helmet's legacy as pioneers of alternative metal is secure, and their enduring influence on heavy music is a testament to the enduring power of artistic innovation.

    No Doubt - Rock Steady

    No Doubt - Rock Steady

A real love survives a rock steady vibe. That was the opening line of one of the most legendary albums from the 2000s by ska band No Doubt. When No Doubt released “Rock Steady” they hadn’t had a hit since 1997 with “Don’t Speak” and the pressure was on after their previous release didn’t quite match up to the success of their “Tragic Kingdom” album. And Match Up they did with this one… with four amazing singles, three of which became smash hits, it’s safe to say that No Doubt more than delivered with this dancehall inspired album. Today join us as we dive into the history of the “Rock Steady” album, so just keep on dancing.
