    Ep. 176: Splinters & Stitches - Supergroups & Offshoots pt.2

This week we look to the stars for inspiration for our show theme. Oh yeah! We are talking about bands that have rock stars in them: Supergroups and Offshoots. A band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. We dive into some of the more obscure supergroups and offshoots that didn’t break with huge mainstream success or stay around very long.

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members along with, Offshoots which are bands who contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Chequered Past – “A World Gone Wild” from Chequered Past (1984)
    2. California Breed – “Midnight Oil” from California Breed (2014)
    3. BackBeat Band – “Rock & Roll Music” from BackBeat – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1994)
    4. Brides Of Destruction – “Brace Yourself” from Brides Of Destruction (2004)
    5. Robin Trower - “Life On Earth” from BLT (1981)
    6. Down ‘N’ Outz – “By Tonight” from My ReGeneration (2010)
    7. Metal Allegiance – “Wait Until Tomorrow” from Metal Allegiance (2015)

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E16

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E16

S6E16 went out live on Rebel Rock radio at 7 pm on 20 April 2023.  It was jam-packed with new stuff including Metallica, Overkill, Dave Hause, and Ian Hunter.  The highlight of the new releases was a track called ‘#Rebel’ from Extreme, Nuno Bettencourt is on fire on the tracks released so far. The album is to be called Six and there are 3 tracks out so far.  We also had a surprise release from the Foo Fighters.  The band is calling it a new beginning.  According to Rolling Stone; The album arrives “after a year of staggering losses, personal introspection, and bittersweet remembrances,” the album’s listing page notes. “A brutally honest and emotionally raw response to everything Foo Fighters have endured recently, But Here We Are is a testament to the healing powers of music, friendship, and family.”  Following on from the tragic death of Taylor Hawkins the Foos have regrouped and united through music.  No one is saying who drummed on the track, but it does sound like Dave to me. I still hope Rufus Taylor will get the gig.

The Ultimate Challenge was way more difficult than normal because 1976 was so strong.  We had 6 albums, Thin Lizzy – Jailbreak, Kiss - Destroyer, Judas Priest – Sad Wings of Destiny, Rainbow – Rising, Rush - 2112, and Boston – Boston.  What do you do when you are supposed to pick one out of four and you can't even pick four from six?  I played all 6 and broke my own rules.  The popular choice was Jailbreak, personally Sad Wings and Destroyer are very special to me.  The general view from the listeners was that 1976 was phenomenal and these 6 albums just prove it.

We had some TSORR oddities and called back the past with Madness and Adam and the Ants, both went down well.  The Immortals this week featured Creedance Clearwater Revival and their 7:39 Track ‘Keep on Chooglin’.  This track gets into your head, the Doctor says it normally takes a week to stop singing 'Keep On Chooglin' to yourself.

This was one of the most enjoyable shows in a long time, with good vibes on the airwaves and cool people to share it with, Ed’s dead baby, Ed’s dead, Long live Nuno.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E9

The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E9

Quick and easy, episode 9 went out between 7 and 10 pm on 4 March 2021.  it was pretty uneventful other than near the end when the wifi failed and I had to reset everything.  It only affected the live audience and the podcast is fine, it's just an irritation that breaks the all-important rhythm.  I kicked off with Mr Big off their debut album and a track called ' Merciless', which showcases the amazing interaction between Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan.  Next up two Rick Rubin productions 25 years apart, ZZ Top with " I Don't Want To Lose, Lose You'  and The Cult with ' King Contrary Man.  A highlight of the first third of the show was revisiting a band out of San Fransico called Hell Fire.

I played a couple of new tracks from Ricky Warwick, vocalist from the Black Star Riders, and Todd La Torre, vocalist from Queensrÿche. Both albums are very strong, it's been a good year for new releases so far.  Local stuff included Jasper Dan, The Burning & Piet Botha.  Punk was taken care of by The Distillers and Sex Pistols.  And then we had the usual classics by W.A.S.P., ACDC, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, The Rolling Stones, and Motörhead.  All in all a good mix of old, new, hard and soft, you should find something you dig amongst this lot.

Artists featured:  Mr Big, Scorpions, ZZ Top, The Cult, Wolfmother, Dio, Hell Fire, Jasper Dan, The Burning, Ricky Warwick, Todd La Torre, David Bowie, Ian Hunter, Marilyn Manson, Avenged Sevenfold, Halestorm, Machine Head, ACDC, Aerosmith, Circus of Power, Motörhead, Sex Pistols, The Distillers, White Zombie, Buckcherry, Walking Papers, Iron Maiden, Kiss, W.A.S.P., Bulletboys, Van Halen, The Pretty Reckless, Metallica, Mercyful fate, Piet Botha, Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, the Darkness.

The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 35

The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 35

Episode 35 of the Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show aired at midnight on 6 September 2019.  It was a great episode even if I do say so myself.  I had exclusive permission to feature a track off Headed to Hell the new album by East Rand rock stars The Burning, it sounded fantastic and the comments on the WhatsApp line were overwhelmingly positive.

I played some more from the Bite! album by Animal Drive! and also can’t get enough of Warpaint the new Buckcherry album.  Jethro Tull & The Rolling Stones sorted out the 50 year old music and Cold Chisel and ACDC did the honours for Australia.  Burning Witches represented the ladies and we had my besties Van Coke Kartel and Johnathan Martin in the local slot.  The Clash gave us the requisite bit of Punk Rock and then we had the third edition of the Long Live The Loud feature, two tracks suggested by my mate Marq Vas.  All in all, it was a total jol and as usual, I ran out of time.

Bands featured on this episode included: The Burning, ACDC, The Cult, Van Halen, Q5, Volbeat, Buckcherry, Ian Hunter, Animal Drive, Mouthful of Flies, Faster Pussycat, Gary Moore, Burning Witches, Johnathan Martin, Cold Chisel, The Clash. Kiss, Judas Priest, The Rolling Stones, Overkill, Van Coke Kartel, Jethro Tull, The Darkness & Manowar
