The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E10

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E10

S6E10 kicked off live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 9 Mar 2023.  It was great to be back in Benoni after last week's sojourn to Clarens and we celebrated hard.  First up was Motörhead and a track off Inferno called ‘In the Year of the Wolf’.  From there some classic Led Zep and a track by Michael Monroe co-written by Lemmy called 'The Fine Art of Debauchery'.  We had some Def Leppard and some Black Sabbath to keep the big names in the mix and then turned left into the world of Stoner Rock and Queens of the Stone Age.   From there we hit some USA Punk with Ramones and The Distillers.

This week's elevator speech came from a quick chat I had with Chris Kennedy of Punkfontein and he told us about the new track being released called ‘The Leviathan’, we played it, and it's fully cool.  We stayed in that zone with Blink 182 and The Killers with a track off Sam’s Town called This River Is Wild.  I vote The Killers the band most in need of a slap round the head.  Such a good album and then nothing.  From there it was back to ‘80s metal courtesy of W.A.S.P. and a track called ‘The Rock Rolls On’.

This week's Immortals was a track by James Reyne featuring a wailing emotionally charged solo by Jef Scott and especially dedicated to my mate Fanie Marais who loved this album and would have been 72 this week. RIP buddy.  From there we heard a brand new track from Bily Squier who, as far as I know, hasn’t released anything for 25 years.  The track is called ‘Harder On A Woman’ and it sounds just like you would expect, well done Billy, welcome back.  The Ultimate Challenge this week looked at 4 albums from 2005.  Avenged Sevenfold – City of Evil, Foo Fighter – In Your Honor, System of a Down – Violent Pornography, and Audioslave - Out of Exile.  Once again there was no clear winner and everyone changed their minds at least once.  The brand new track by Deadline called 'My Sweet apocalypse' is really good, over 7 min long it is one of the best tracks these SA metal giants have released.  We ended with Iron Maiden and The Halo Effect with tracks called 'Tears of a Clown' and 'Gateways'.

Artists Featured: Motörhead, Led Zeppelin, Michael Monroe, Hell Fire, Def Leppard, Black Sabbath, Queens of the Stone Age, The Distillers, Ramones, Metallica, Crossbone Skully, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Ugly Kid Joe, Airbourne, Punkfontein (Feat Meel Vignetting), Blink 182, The Killers, W.A.S.P., Sebastian Bach, Sophie Lloyd (Feat Matthew K. Heafy), James Reyne, System of a Down, Foo Fighters, Audioslave, Avenged Sevenfold, Dave Hause, Bush, Anti-Nowhere League, Iggy Pop, Deadline, Iron Maiden, The Halo Effect.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E9

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E9

It is that time of year again, Dan Patlansky's guitar weekend down in Clarens.  This episode went out on Rebel rock Radio on 2 March 2023 at 19h00.  It was a bit messy, but messy is good, let me know if you disagree.  We kicked off with Fokofpolisiekar and their classic rock anthem, ‘Hemel Op Die Platteland, and followed up in quick succession with Airbourne, Grand Funk Railroad, and Mötley Crüe.  We heard from the ladies pretty early in the show, two stellar guitarists Sophie Lloyd and Laura Cox showing the way.  From there we checked out some Queen of Queen II and the opening tracks of My Chemical Romances masterpiece The Black Parade.

We broke radio rules and played Nickelback with no problem at all, I love Nickelback, I think Chad Kroeger is a phenomenal songwriter and has a golden voice.  I think the hate is coming from people piling on because others don’t like them.  Be your own person and admit that there is nothing wrong with Nickelback 😊.  We had a bit of metal with some Mastodon and some Megadeth, and then we checked out In This Moment doing a cover of Debbie Harry’s classic ‘Call Me’.   Yes I know Blondie is a band, nice try guys.

Artists featured:  Fokofpolisiekar, Airbourne, Grand funk Railroad, Mötley Crüe, UFO, Great White, Sophie Lloyd, Laura Cox, Queen, My Chemical Romance, Stone Sour, Nickelback, Tom Morello (feat Bruce Springsteen), Monster Magnet, Jack Hammer Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Megadeth, Mastodon, Foo Fighters, In This Moment, Arch Enemy, Godsmack, Matthew Good Band, U2. Oceans of Angels, The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Clash, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Bush, Dan Patlansky, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Malevolence

Today’s movie premiered at Cannes 2022 and was the Cambodian entry for Best International Feature at this year’s Oscars (though it didn’t make it off the shortlist). Our guest is comedian Josh Johnson, whose new special Up Here Killing Myself is on Peacock. After unpacking this new movie, everyone tries their best at a brand-new (and extremely trivial) movie trivia game about movie time jumps.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E8

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E8

Episode 8 of Season 6 went out live at 7 pm on Rebel Rock Radio on 23 Feb 2023.  23 2 23 what a day, what a week what a 26-month journey.  I am out of the game.  Long live Rock and Roll.  We kicked off this very unplanned show with Guns ‘n’ Roses and ‘Anything Goes’.  From there something brand new from Black Star Riders and something old from Badlands, an awesome track called ‘High Wire’.  Mike Orlando from Adrenaline Mob gave us all guitar lessons on a track called 'Dearly Departed'.  Grunge duty was fulfilled by Nirvana, Puddle of Mud, and Temple of the Dog.

We checked out another track from Indian rockers Girish & the Chronicles and a track off their latest album Hail to the Heroes, featuring Lamb of God’s drummer, the brilliant Chris Adler.  There was an interesting little biographical bit all about 23 2 23 which has become a special day in the life of TSORR.  I’ll tell you about it if you want to know.  We checked out ‘Lay Your Hands On Me’ off Bon Jovi’s New Jersey album, then Bowie with ‘Changes’ and finally, U2 with ‘Beautiful Day’ which it was.  From there we checked out Metallica and all 7:50 of the Diamond Head classic ‘Am I Evil’ which is this week’s Immortal track.  The Ultimate Challenge this week looked at 1973.  The choices were Led Zeppelin – Houses of the Holy, Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon, The Rolling Stones – Goats Head Soup, and Black Sabbath's – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

We hit the home stretch with some punk courtesy of Blink 182 and ‘Edging’ then the Clash and The Stranglers and I couldn’t resist Patti Smith and 'Rock ‘n’ Roll Nigger',.  We ended heavy with Death Angel and Slayer and said good night with ‘Langpad’ by Cape Town legends The Uninvited.

Artists featured:  Guns ‘n’ Roses, Black Star Riders, Badlands, Reef, Smith / Kotzen, Adrenaline Mob, Black Country Communion, Clutch, Moon Tooth, Nirvana, Puddle of Mudd, Temple of the Dog, Girish and the Chronicles, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, Alice Cooper, KISS, Tesla, Rose Tattoo, Bon The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Blink 182, Jovi, David Bowie, U2, Metallica, ACDC, My Chemical Romance, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Blink 182, The Clash, The Stranglers, Patti Smith, Death Angel, Slayer, The Uninvited.

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E6

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E6

We kicked episode 6 with a track called ‘Burning For You’ a cover of a great track by Blue Öyster Cult, very well done here by Iced Earth.  The show then got heavy with Killswitch Engage and Annihilator,  with ‘Desperate Times’ and 'Set the World On Fire’ respectively.   Both of these fall into the TSORR Songs that could be about South Africa category.  Accept and Sinner gave us a taste of German metal and then we had Thundermother out of Sweden.  There was a great little SA music segue early in the show where we checked out Jack Hammer Band with a pre-released track called 'As I Turn Away' and then a band out of Sekunda called Pilgrim South.  Their new track 'Old Man Moonshine went down well.  From there we were into familiar territory with Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Def Leppard.  my love affair with Def Leppard's Mutt Lange produced Hi 'N' Dry album continues, we listened to 'Lady Strange'.

Manic Street Preachers and a new-ish band I am not too familiar with called St. Aurora changed the pace a bit and then we started to delve into this week's Ultimate Challenge, 4 albums released in 1980 and you can only choose one.  The albums selected were Judas Priest - British Steel, Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell, Motörhead -  Ace of Spades, and ACDC - Back in Black.  the votes came in but in the end, it was one-way traffic with the winner of this week's Ultimate Challenge going to Back In Black

The Immortal track was Gun ‘n’ Roses with Estranged and we kept our punk confined to the USA with Iggy Pop, The Distillers, and Weezer.  I had some problems with Brody Dalle squashed in the middle.  This week I discovered Doomsday Outlaw, this track called ' Is This The End of Everything' features the kind of guitar tone and phrasing that I absolutely love.  Talking guitar, a track off the new Winery Dogs with Richie Kotzen, Bily Sheehan, and Mike Portnoy hit the stop.  Girish and the Chronicles are just simply blazing, what a band.  We ended heavy with Ablaze My Sorrow off their new EP, and Phantom Days by Dark Tranquility.  Oh, one last thing TSORR made No 12 on the list of top 35 Rock Podcasts on the planet, check it out right here:

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E5

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E5

S6E5 aired at 19h00 on 2 Feb 2023 live on Rebel Rock Radio.  The opening track was by Warrior Soul, I have some good memories of this band.  Marq Vas and I discovered them in the early ‘90s and their Last Decade, Dead Century album, where this track came from was always in heavy rotation.  Next up, Thunder Mother with ‘Borrowed Time’ conjured up the image of thousands of lighters held aloft, and ‘Turn of the Screw' from Heaven & Hell again reminded us of the magnificence of Ronnie James Dio’s Voice.

During the show, Tim sent me the list of 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations and coincidently four of them were in the 'possible track' playlist.  So with that, I had to play Iron Maiden, Sound Garden, Sheryl Crow, and Warren Zevon.  Good luck to all of them.   Billy Idol has a very cool thing going, he has released an EP every year since 2021, I assume it is on purpose, and we will get another one in 2023.  It keeps things fresh and as long as Steve Stevens is with him I will buy every single one.  Suicidal Tendencies raised the tempo by a factor of about ten with a delightful track called ‘Disco’s Out, Murders In'.  We had a bit of fun trying to figure out which of these four albums released in 1984 you would choose if you could only choose two.  We had Van Halen, - 1984, Iron Maiden - Powerslave, Metallica - Ride The Lightening and, Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith.  There was no clear favorite which was to be expected given the quality of those albums, and that was the point. For my money, it was Metallica and the mighty Judas Priest, but tomorrow it might be different.  Next week we will look at 1980. We took a listen to 'The Sentinel' and 'Creeping Death'.

South African music was well represented by Future Radio, comprising Johnny Future and Drikus Roets, two very talented artist/musicians.  We heard a track called 'DOI' off their Freedom album, then we had Johnathan Martin with 'Don't Want To Know' and finally SA Rock and Bluesman Kenny Hughes who spoke to me this week and told me a bit about the new track 'Midnight Man'.  We listened to what he said about it and then took a listen to it.  It is a great track and people liked it a lot.  The plan is to do more of these short 5 min interviews and to give the artist a chance to tell you about their music.

The UK Punk slot was ably filled by The Stranglers, UK Subs, and Sham 69 and then it was time for our weekly Immortals, i.e. tracks over 7 min long that will live forever.  This week it was The Fall of the Peacemakers by Molly Hatchet.  For my money the highlights of this show were Indian rockers Girish & the Chronicles, their new album Back on Earth is simply stunning, its got everything you would expect from a top-flight '80s style metal band.  The brand new Iggy Pop is out and we played ‘Morning Show’ which is wonderful.  I advised you to listen to it a couple of times.  It is a serious grower.   There is plenty more to get into, this episode was a cracker.  Cheers and thanks for listening.

Artists featured:  Warrior Soul, Thunder Mother, Heaven & Hell, Black Stone Cherry, Soundgarden, L.A. Rats, Slash, Suicidal Tendencies, Black Label Society, Billy Idol, Skid Row, Sheryl Crow, Iron Maiden, Moon Tooth, Pearl Jam, Future Radio, Johnathan Martin, Kenny Hughes, Girish & the Chronicles, ACDC, Judas Priest, Metallica, The Stranglers, UK Subs, Sham 69, Molly Hatchet, Santana, Uriah Heep, Iggy Pop, Bush, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, U2, Tim Minchin, Robbie Robertson, Warren Zevon, Slayer

Here it is folks, yet another magnum opus! The long awaited and prestigious Dinosaur Man awards for films of the year released in the UK in 2022. In what has become a long standing tradition we battle it out with our guest Paul Hudson to nominate and win in the big categories. Listen in to find out which films are on the receiving end of some high praise this year!

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E3

The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E3

Episode 3 of Season 6 launched promptly at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio and then crashed back to earth like a failed rocket launch.  It was restarted and got back on the air at 19h17.  The joys of internet radio.  This was the first episode going out on fibre.  While podcast people have not been affected, listeners to the live show have had a really rough ride of late thanks to load shedding in South Africa.  Since late 2022 it has either been my cell towers collapsing (Telcom) or if mine are up then the guys trying to listen have no power.  It is, as they say, a shit show.

When we did get going we started with Aerosmith and 'Young Lust' of the hugely successful Pump album. From there we had Ratt and then Sixx A.M., with 'Lies of the Beautiful People’.  There were two tracks with a Metallica theme running through, W.A.S.P. with 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and then Volbeat with an excellent cover of ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ to keep the show Rambling On.  Speaking of which I used Led Zepellin with ‘Ramble On’ and Judas Priest with ‘Better By You Better Than Me’ to talk a bit about the development of modern Metal.

On the local scene, we checked out more of Infanteria’s phenomenal album Patriarch and a track called ‘Repent Through the Orders You Seek’.  It was a pleasure to play the brand new track by South African Metal heavyweights Deadline.  The track is called 'Cult of Prometheus, it has just been released, Dave Devo Oosthuizen who works tirelessly to promote SA music, sent it to me and it is a pleasure to give it some airtime.  We had classics from ACDC, and Motörhead, plenty from the ladies, Laura Cox, Samantha Fish, Doll Skin, and L7.  This weeks Songs that may be about South Africa included 'The Ditch' (Dave Hause), 'Don’t Lie To Me' (Dokken), High 'n' Dry (Def Leppard), 'Sucker Born' (Samantha Fish) and 'Take Back Your Life' from Disturbed.

This week The Immortals, i.e. classic metal tracks that are over 7 min long and will last forever, came courtesy of Deep Purple with ‘Child in Time’.  Following on was hard and I delegated the job to Tool and their amazing track about two additional chromones ‘Forty-Six and 2'.  A highlight of the show was a track sent to me called ‘Goodbye To The World and The Whole Damn Thing’ by a band called deadfilmstar.  I really enjoyed it, it has such an evil feel to it.  It is Mansonesque but very fresh, check it out.

Wrapping up we had UK Punky stuff from The Police, the Jam, and then for good measure, we had Böhse Onkels and a track called 'Saufen ist wie Weinen' which means drinking is like crying.  It is the best Böhse Onkels track I have ever heard, love that little bluesy intro.  The new Bush album The Art of Survival gave us a track called ‘More Than Machines’.  Metalheads can go to the last 10 minutes of the show for Obituary and In Flames, Nu Metal fans can go twenty minutes before the end and catch Birthday Boy Kid Rock and a track off Rock ‘n’ Roll Jesus and Limp Bizkit with the amazing Wes Borland on guitar doing a track called Rollin’, thanks as always for tuning in guys, much appreciated, Adios Amoeba’s catch you next week.

Artists featured:  Aerosmith, Ratt, Sixx AM, Thin Lizzy, Y&T, The Quireboys, Def Leppard, W.A.S.P., Volbeat, Sword, Infanteria, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Drowning Pool, Disturbed, Laura Cox, Samantha Fish, Doll Skin, L7, Dave Hause, Slash (feat Chris Cornell), Motörhead, ACDC, Dokken, Manowar, Deadfilmstar, Deadline, Deep Purple, Tool, The Dead Daisies, The Police, The Jam, Böhse Onkels, Bush, Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, Obituary, In Flames, David Lee Roth

Did You Know These Hindi Songs Were Composed by MM Keeravani?

I woke up to the news of Naatu Naatu winning a Golden Globe for best Original Song. As MM Keeravani, the music director of RRR walked up to pick his award, the auditorium erupted to the anthem.

He has been working in films since 1990, but its a pity that he still remains a lesser-known figure in the Indian Music Industry.

But actually, many of our favourite Hindi songs were composed by MM Keeravani. So, in this episode of Do I Like It, let's take a look at some tunes he's responsible for.
