Parents Matter: A Strong Defense for Homeschooling with John Stamper

Parents Matter: A Strong Defense for Homeschooling with John Stamper

Author of Conflicted: Pulling Back the Curtain on Public Education, John Stamper joins the Master Books Podcast to discuss the critical role of parenting in a child's salvation and education. John left the Chicago Public School System because his Christian values were in conflict with what he was mandated to teach his students.

In this episode we focus on Chapter 10 of his book entitled Parents Matter where John exposes the "intentional, systematic, and devastating war that's being waged on parents and traditional family values in this country." pg 133 (07:48)

    We discuss:

    • Parents are the first model of the gospel for their children and how the public education system undermines Christian doctrine and the parent's Christian influence. (07:30)
    • Homeschooling from a biblical worldview is following the model of the Bible
    • Parents have the opportunity to model to children that God loves them. The public school education agenda is not designed to reinforce this fact, instead it seeks to dismiss evidence God exists. (10:07)
    • The doctrine of intersectionality (intersecting identities) which divides people into enemies assigning people roles based on their race, gender, religion, etc. into "oppressors" and "the oppressed." For example, Christians and straight men are actually labeled as "oppressive." This turns classmates and colleagues into enemies which dismantles the Christian value of unity. (12:45)
    • John's experience revealing how school system is designed to disrupt the nuclear family. (14:30)
    • Marxism in the education system today. Carl Marx's intended purpose was to "dethrone God." John Stamper reveals how the influence of Black Lives Matter is destructive to the nuclear family and how it is being promoted within the school system. (14:55)
    • We see how families are divided and undermined in school policies such as the "parental secrecy policies. (15:45)
    • The freedom to choose to live out the hope of life in Christ by fulfilling God's Word in Deuteronomy 6 to teach your children the Word and ways of God diligently throughout each day. (19:19)
    • John exposes the early sexualization of children within the public schools as young as kindergarten using concepts like the "gender unicorn."  John explains how this goes beyond brainwashing to being a form of kidnapping their mind and their soul. John shows this is similar to strategies used by Lennon in the USSR. (21:19)
    • Public school teachers are told not to tell parents if their children are living an identity at school than they are at home. (23:29)
    • Stamper reveals how history is repeating itself exposing how the strategy of indoctrination and division of families was successful and the birth of devastation such as the Holocaust and World War 2. This is outlined in chapter 8 of his book, Conflicted, entitled "Learning from Marxism and Communism in the 20th Century." (26:32)
    • Churches and families can partner together to make homeschooling more affordable with a new program: Christian Education Scholarship Program (CESP). (29:12)
    • John invites listeners to his podcast: The State of the State School.

    Time Stamps:

1:54 - The concept of catechism goes back for many centuries.

2:10 - Catechism is the concept of question-and-answer used to determine if the person understands the concepts they were taught.

2:34 – Foundational Truths teaches an overview of Christian doctrine revealing the things that have been believed by believers for over 2000 years.

2:51 – There is great value in families using catechism to teach their children the primary doctrines of the Christian faith.

3:30 - What age or grade was Foundational Truths developed for? Master Books and Israel Wayne partnered together to create a family catechism resource.

3:49 - The book includes 52 of the most important biblical doctrine issues so a family can focus on one per week.

4:14 - Israel Wayne compares Foundations in Faith homeschool Bible curriculum to Foundational Truths.

5:28 - The purpose of Foundational Truth is to point people back to Scripture and create a foundational understanding of the Christian life under the authority of the Bible.

5:52 – Israel explains the historical background of catechism and how denominations used it to teach the doctrine of their denomination.

6:13 - The first protestant to write a catechism was Martin Luther.

6:52 - The rise of the Sunday school movement decreased the use of catechism among protestants.

8:25 - Take the timeliness of the historic confessions and repackaged them into a resource that is modern.

9:25 - Questions and answers about Bible doctrine should be something every Chrisitan should be excited about.

9:38 - More history behind catechism and church membership

10:57 - Catechism had a part in welcoming children into church membership. There was a similar process for adults coming to salvation in Christ later in life.

11:33 - One historic downside to that process was the student only had a mental assent to the doctrine and were not "born again."

12:30 - Revivalists in the 1800s and the 2nd Great Awakening discussed

15:21 - Foundational Truths works to bring together the importance of knowing Bible doctrine with a deepening of the individual's relationship with God.

17:02 - Israel Wayne explains the elements found in the weekly chapters.

17:54 - Foundational Truths: A Modern Catechism would be a great discipleship tool for people who come to Christ through a jail or prison ministry.

18:51 - How Scripture is used throughout the book.

19:00 - What makes this catechism different or distinct.

20:00 - Some traditional catechisms were created to teach the distinctions between denominations.

20:33 - Foundational Truths focuses on historic Christianity that every Christian can agree upon.

20:47 – Foundational Truths is non-sectarian and non-denominational. This new catechism is cross-denominational providing Bible doctrine embraced by a wide cross section of Christians.

21:56 - Foundational Truths is uniquely filled with Scripture to drive the student or new disciple to the Bible, not to man's opinions.

23:43 - Most catechisms were written over 400 years ago, so the language is antiquated.

24:23 - Why Foundational Truths: A Modern Catechism uses the King James Version of the Bible

26:20 - Israel Wayne reveals how a church or family would use Foundational Truths throughout the week.

Homeschooling: How to Answer Your Critics with Israel Wayne

Israel Wayne, author of Answers for Homeschooling: 25 Questions Critics Ask, joins the Master Books podcast to encourage home educators.

"The main reason I homeschool is not just my experience. When I look in the Scripture, I find that God commands me as a parent to teach my own children, and God never instructs me to send my children away from me to people that I don't know to teach and instruct my children. So, I take that pretty seriously, that God has entrusted my wife and I with the responsibility of raising our own children and passing on our own faith, our beliefs, our values to them."
